Well a good auto is a good thing, reminds me of a story I heard many
years ago, a road train was stuck on a wheat farm in WA and they got a
D9 in to pull it out, after breaking the first chain they got a bigger
chain, D9 bogged down. Got in a Allis Chalmers N9 harvester with
hydrostatic transmission, N9 ripped the road train out of bog.

Moral of story? HP applied gradually is better than HP applied suddenly.

I've done that on long hills/going through winding corners.

Much better than hitting brakes, letting off, hitting brakes, lettng off,
hitting brakes... Beter handling response as well.

Problem is, you still have to hit the brakes anyways, to get the lights up,
or the person behind you will assume you're taking the 30 rated corner at 55
like they do...

Walt, who sometimes takes the 30 rated at 60, but doesn't recommend it..

I was under the impression that most dozers of recent vintage (back into the
'80s certainly) had hydro transmissions which is what allows for the constant
back and forth they do all day.

Certainly the D7 that I ran back in 1997 would go from VERY slow to relatively

I was talking to a Cat mechanic recently. He told me they have
some prototype 'dozers that are diesel-electric. He said the

Probably helps meet fuel efficiency/emissions regs (are there any for earth

generator and the speed control is all done with the electric motor.

Re: [MBZ] We all live in a yellow G machine

2011-08-18 Thread drcscruggs
I actually have a 280g with an automatic. It too is a right hand drive. I
thought maybe the diesel with automatic would decrease performance vs the
manual. I realize the benefit of increased mileage with the manual trans. I
have gotten stuck with a manual and ended up burning out the clutch. It really
does not take long to do that! But... that is another subject. I guess I am
just a little lazy and like the auto but am not totally opposed to the manual.

Oh man, you've cracked a can of worms about like an oil thread!
For descending a steep grade a manual has HUGE advantages. However if you're
ust driving dirt roads scouting around for game an auto is way easier. They can
lso be good in a big mud hole because the shift doesn't lose all your torque...
ompromises either way.

A question, why would you not like the automatic? It seems to me that in some
ffroad situations, that there would be a benefit to an auto?

t's not the yellow that bothers me, it's the automatic tranny in a 300GD.

Re: [MBZ] We all live in a yellow G machine

2011-08-18 Thread ernest breakfield
as someone who spends time several dozens of miles from the nearest
pavement, i especially appreciate having a vehicle that doesn't require
having 2 working hands and 2 working feet to get out of wherever i am.
just a simple sprain to only one extremity can leave you in a position
where you could wind up unable to drive out, and possibly in a heap of
trouble. (additionally, while i can drive a stick well, not everyone
can; any vehicle i use in the services i provide should be drivable by
the greatest number of people possible.)

in less critical situations, having a good modern automatic trans
makes for much more pleasant wheeling in many situations where you have
to creep over stuff gently, and less harsh on the vehicle and
passengers. having the benefit of the torque converter makes the
effective working low gearing work even better as well.

there's a guy i know near here with a white 4-door 300GD with a
turbo and its matching automatic transplanted into it; it's very close
to what i hope to own one day.

cheers!

Get a Unimog with TC and have the best of both worlds! (Or the
worst...)

Pretty good offroad, too or so I hear. :-)

See, yellow is not so bad.

Reserve not met at AU$4500! That's about US$5K. Amazing. That truck
could easily fetch four times that price on the West Coast if the
steering wheel were on the correct side.
