just a follow up. A rebuilt transmission shifts way better than one with 182000 mostly city miles on it. no more 1-2 thud and the 3-2 downshift ka-chung is gone also. Basically it behaves like a normal modern auto Transmission car now. No more driving around town in S to avoid the nasty downshift around corners! Smooth operator. now if I can only find the whole car vibration at 75 MPH, must be a bent wheel as I have had four or five sets of new tires on it over the years and now have replaced flex disks and the driveshaft bearing hangar and rebuilt the tranny and it still vibrates. Or a bent driveshaft I guess. Half shafts seem OK. Might be time to spring for the 15 Bundt cake wheels. Re: [MBZ] transmission rebuild
Did you check the center joint in the driveshaft? Tends to sound like a bad muffler with extra vibration, most obvious at the console where the carrier bearing is. Very obnoxious, but usually shakes all the time, not just at 75 mph. I would have a good tire shop check for a bent wheel, they should be able to see it while balancing. Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android Put the spare on the ground and move it around to see if anything changes. I doubt your problem is a wheel. What you describe sounds like an out of phase driveshaft. no known cure other than to send it to the rebuilder in GA (but there is probably one in the LA area) or to take it out and put it back together in the next spline (up to 33 times) until you get it in the right spline. Jim Cathey built a lathe to find the sweet spot in his driveshaft, but most of us don't have space and an adequate junk pile to salvage the needed parts from to do that. Another option is to buy a junkyard driveshaft and try it until you get a good one. (I used this option) I lucked out the first time. The moral of the story is to never let anyone buy yourself to touch the driveshaft. In my case, some monkeys took it out without my permission. They of course decided to slide the splines apart. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Just a thought. I had a Mercury Sable with similar symptoms. It turned out to be a bad shock absorber. That shock worked fine for large motions but it allowed a small amplitude undamped oscillation, probably excited by a small tire imbalance when the wheel speed matched the suspension resonant frequency. FYI Sun Valley must be a volume operation. the rebuilt transmission and torque converter are on their way back to my car. I asked if it was the same transmission and torque converter and he said yes, they open the torque converter, check the bearing, adjust tolerances and put (weld?) it back together, then bolt the same one up to the same transmission. this seems like less than 24 hour turnaround. yeah, we used to buy a lot of stuff from adsit, including all the transmissions and injection pumps. all that stuff that would come to you from longwood, FL was from adsit really, the product is fine but they genuinely despise their customers from the top down. my understanding is that they are an absolute misery for the retail customer to deal with. on the wholesale end, we never dealt with the indiana operation but would just catch that abuse second hand from the florida operation and then we'd all laugh at the indiana operation for being assholes the adsit rebuilds were done in muncie, IN, which is really the heart of the transmission building world. they were solid and we had few issues with them. rusty originally used that neoconfederate guy, ron, but they had a falling out and we used adsit for at least a decade that i know of. i can't say whether rusty switched over to sun valley some time after i left or not. it is possible. Re: [MBZ] transmission rebuild
It would require some effort no doubt. Sometimes special tools, but sometimes they can be home made as well. I cannot say I know a whole lot about it but I did do a bit of study on the GM 700R4 at one time as I had one in my Suburban and it was troublesome. I had it done by a shop once and was not happy with the result. I therefore considered trying it myself but ended up selling the vehicle before I had to do it. It still worked well enough to drive it but it was difficult to keep it in overdrive. In any event, there was a lot of available information for that transmission and I read a lot fo it. Certain upgrades etc made them sturdier. I gather one of the primary concerns is the need to keep the parts very clean. I talked to Mark at SV. Whoever said he seems like a good guy is correct. Since there really aren't any problems with the transmission, he said it should be easier to rebuild. So he cut me a deal from the normal rebuilt/core exchange price of $1750. He will scoop it up tomorrow from my mechanic and take it back there on Thursday. Nice coincidence that he drives right by there every day on his commute. Anyway you guys probably saved me four or five hundred dollars, so thanks very much. Diesel list rules! Re: [MBZ] transmission rebuild
Wow! that is good to hear, but I am not surprised. Congrats! He has been very gracious about answering my questions. So far, I have never had to buy a trans from him. yet. My half million mile SDL junker is shifting just fine after a fluid and filter change. The others are all doing ok, except the 811 240D, and I need to follow the steps SV has online to adjust it. Just never had the time to dedicate to it, cause I am not driving it. It is in reserve status. Time for a SoCal get together! The insurance from my recent fender bender guy pulling out in front of me left me with about 2k to spend on other items. The tranny leaks from the front seal. Enrique wants 2k to pull, rebuild with all new seals and clutches and reinstall. 400 to fix the seal alone. It has 182k on it and shifts like a dream. What does the peanut gallery think about 1600 extra for a rebuild since the slush box is coming out anyway? Re: [MBZ] transmission rebuild
ron was insane. you weren't allowed to look at, let alone talk to, his employees. he closed down for confederate memorial day. etc he might still even be around. his business was simply transmissions by ron or something similarly simple ron was similar to the soup nazi from seinfeld, only it was no transmission for you! one day rusty offended ron in some way (the exact details elude me beyond it involving rusty sharing choice words with ron and ron banning him for life) and that was the end of that adsit was having transmission built for him in his town of muncie, indiana, which was where chevrolet was building transmissions forever. it was a place where everyone built transmissions. this guy donny used to work for rusty and now worked for adsit, so we simply started buying these adsit transmissions. kent adsit didn't mind as long as we didn't try to undercut him on price, or so we were told by donny. We sell a kit that includes all gaskets and seals plus all the friction discs. Anything else needed would have to be purchased separately. we can get all the part needed. the tools we don't have.
