[MOPO] Cagney Classics

2005-03-09 Thread Bruce Carteron

Hello - this is Bruce Carteron, back on Mopo again
after many years gone. Hello to everyone I know on here - you know who you are.
Anyone here fans of James Cagney's "PUBLIC ENEMY"? Did you know the new DVD
release restores lost footage that hadn't been seen since 1931? It was way cool
to see that! Maybe Warners' - since getting their film library back will
have more good things to come. They didn't hype this at all. They did show out
takes of "WHITE HEAT" (another classic Cagney) on that release. Anyway - good to
be back. Hope someone wants to discuss this cool Cagney stuff. -

2005-03-09 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts

The US postal service and the Australian postal
service also have certain "issues" between them that come down to basically
the US postal service wants the Australian postal service to adopt their methods
for everything they do.

It's not unlike the way the US government wants
the Australian government to do everything it wants as well. Surprisingly, the
postal service, unlike the government, has resisted some things already, but
show signs of cracking.

And to those people who have asked (really!)
- Australian dollars are not the same as US dollars. We have different dead
people on our bills, including a woman or two, and they have a different value
depending on the exchange rate at the time.

I have heard, however, that Australia will
be soon issuing the trillion dollar note, with George W. Bush's head on it. We
hope to use these to pay back the massive trade deficit Australia now has.
Apparently they are good in America and several other non-disclosed
countries.

I guess if the moderator can break the "no
politics rule", then a contributor can too, occasionally.

There are international postal conventions to which
virtually every country with postal services belongs. If the Candian service
has introduced any new addressing requirements they are, as Bob notes,
essentially variations of those already in use. The prospect that the postal
service is turning back truckloads for minor "noncompliance" seems somewhat
unlikely. Anyway, the paypal address info setup that many sellers seem to copy
and paste onto parcels works fine. If paying by mail buyers should include
  their own label.

Return addresses though have to be as clear as the
recipient's. So there is an issue related to legibility of that - make sure
it's complete or else that will result in a rejection of receipt. And that's
the same for the US and other countries now.

Starting and since late Fall the US and Canadian services
have been a loggerheads and I'm not sure who is to "blame", over where the US
will deliver parcel post in Canada - there was a change from Winnipeg, Calgary
and Vancouver Customs depots to Vancouver only for all of western Canada, so
there has been a long backlog - first for Christmas; possibly now there is no
room for MORE parcels and there is a turnaround of trucks / other
delay - as FEWER Customs agents check many more parcels than before for,
as Phil states, contraband and explosives.

Going the other way of course, there is the interdiction of
homemade foodstuffs such as cookies and fudge and horrors (!?) farm-drawn
bottles of maple syrup from Gramma that have not been preapproved (tasted by
  Gitmo prisoners?).

Still, the mail does leak through.

Hey All:

I'm Canadian (and get a ton of packages) and have
never had a problem with addresses on anything.  But, in case you're
worried, here's the proper way to address something to Canada:

BOB BROOKS1234 MAIN ST NW
VANCOUVER BC  A1B 2C3
CANADA

And, yes, Santa Claus is Canadian (we lay
claim to the north pole)...

Good day,Bob

  Found this,

Canada refuses all mail that does not conform to the new
  addressing requirements.
  NEW MANDATORY ADDRESS REQUIREMENTS FOR
CANADA1. Addressee full first and last name must be
spelled out; using "Grandma" or "Uncle" is no longer acceptable.2. Sender
full first and last name must be spelled out; "Grandma", "Santa" or "Uncle" is
no longer acceptable.3. The complete address of the sender, including ZIP
Code and country of origin, must be shown in the upper left hand corner of the
address side of the package, envelope or card.4. Addresses to recipients
in Canada must be printed -- preferably in ink or typewritten -- using capital
letters.5. The last line of the address must show only the country name,
written in full, and in capital letters.6. When a Canadian postal delivery
zone number is included in the address, mailing requirements allow that number
appear as the last line of the address.7. Complete and legible customs
declarations, including complete sender and addressee information along with
required import documentation, must be provided to specifically identify the
contents of any package. General descriptions such as "gift" or "present" are
  no longer acceptable.

Re: [MOPO] New Mandatory Address Requirements for Canada

2005-03-09 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts

Thanks for sharing - be good if the Canadian Post
Office let postal services around the world know about their latest
requirements. Australia Post is just as bad. All international parcels have to
have a sender  ID sticker attached which has  a specific number that
IDs the sender based on the private info (such as  a driver's licence).
Don't use the sticker and the parcel can be delayed for a month from shipping
while it sits somewhere here in Australia and they wait for it to blow up... and
if it does, then gather together all the fragments of the 2" orange sticker,
presumably.

serviceman in WWI, stricken by shellshock, leaving him deaf

Re: [MOPO] Posters, Chi, Marriage and Wall Space

2005-03-09 Thread Ralph Plumb
I really enjoyed the comments regarding spousal approval of movie
poster decoration, especially from JR. I have not had as much luck.
When I tried to pass off a Rio Grande half sheet as a romantic poster
because John Wayne is kissing Maureen Ohara, I got slammed. But she
finally relented and let me keep it. I have tried another tactic with
my window cards. First I start out with an innocent looking colorful
window card, then over time I exchange it for another such as Psycho
with Janet Leigh, Creature From The Black Lagoon, or Kiss Me Deadly. It
can take up to a week or two before my wife notices the change and I
have to replace them with a more acceptable title, Hello Dolly or Three
Caballeros. This technique also works when I buy a new piece of video
gear. My collection is essentially confined to my lonely TV room with a
few allowed in the family room. But I am still trying to expand. I am
envious of many of you guys.

Re: [MOPO] Posters, Chi, Marriage and Wall Space

2005-03-09 Thread Greg Douglass
An excellent way of handling the posters-in-shared spaces problem, JR,
and your use of foreplay was well done (always effective when dealing in
touchy situations with the fairer sex...).

Greg,
I would suggest that the proper answer to this eternal spousal
question is: "Why honey, naturally I would save you first -- I'd need
someone to help me carry all of the posters out to safety!"
But I can't complain. I've had a pleasant reverse-experience with my
wife. At first she was against the idea of letting my posters out of
the Library (which doubles as my office). We have a lot of more
standard "art prints" on the walls and a decor of her choosing that
leans toward old-world antiquish. She just didn't think they would fit
it -- and it was hard to argue with her.
But I acquired a couple of really nice, atmospheric portrait-type
posters featuring female stars from the '40s.. y'know, some noir and
mystery and romance titles... framed them and then showed them to
her. She couldn't help liking them. She agreed to allow a couple out
into the rest of the house on a probationary basis... just
temporarily, you understand...
With that foot in the door, it was only a matter of time. I slowly
exposed her to a wider range of movie posters and now we have quite a
few of them around the house in all the rooms, mixed in happily with
the art prints. I like to swap out a framed poster with a different
one once a month or so, and now I will often elicit moans of protest
when she comes home... things like "Hey, what happened to that poster
in the hall? I really liked that one..."or "...Ooooh... that
one's pretty! When did you get that?"
Of course, I try to see to it that we, um, rarely discuss price... I
ain't crazy.

*Subject:* [MOPO] Posters, Chi, Marriage and Wall Space
I've been reading and commiserating with my MOPO brethren
about the
lack of available wall space to display one's treasures. My wife is
tolerant of my collecting...she certainly doesn't oppose it, as
none of
our "house" money goes into the hobby...and quite a few posters were
displayed around the house, much to my delight. (The more horrific
material was hung in my office and at my teaching studios. The "living
room" posters included stuff like GILDA and a one sheet from the 1925
version of SHE, among many, many others.) Then, about three years
ago,
I played a benefit concert that included some auctions. I bid on
and won
for my wife a feng shui consultation for our home. The feng shui
consultant arrived at the house and was just horrifed at all the stuff
on the wall. "All that clutter is bad for the chi", she wailed.
"Take it
down!" Well...the house was hit by a feng shui tsunami. Everything got
changed, and I ended up with a pile of framed posters sitting in my
office and nowhere to put them. No posters allowed in the bedroom.
(Oh,
the humanity!) We have since done some compromising, and there are
indeed a few more pieces on the living room wall, but I think I simply
need to start making a LOT more money and get a much bigger house with
more wall space. (Anybody have any ideas?)
A more practical solution re/display has been the acquisition of
more inserts. I've been snagging a lot of 50s AIP inserts and I'm able
to fit a lot more of them on my office walls. I actually like the
format, and I can display lots of the original horror/sci fi double
bills from the Fifties side-by-side easily. The chi in my office is
disastrous, of course, but I'll learn to cope.
Greg Douglass
PS-My wife and I are about to celebrate 10 very happy years of
marriage,
by the way, even after she asked me one day, "If the house were
burning
down, would you save me or your posters?" There was a very long
silence
from me. "Well, at least you're honest", she said.
