[MOPO] What was your very first poster?

2006-02-01 Thread Michael Wong
Hi again,
My very first posters were a Casablanca R49 lobby set and an Enforcer os that
my sister bought me around 1970 from Cinemabilia? when she moved to New York
to pursue a dance career. I gave one of the cards to my best friend in
college (with whom I was having a contest to see who could see the most Bogart
films). Still have all the rest of the cards. The Enforcer went in a trade
that
netted me a beautiful Pola Negri window card.
Good question, Michael, Cinecityposters

[MOPO] mopo: re Pulp Fiction advance

2006-02-01 Thread Michael Wong
Hi modern poster collectors,
The Pulp Fiction advance one-sheet that I bought at a sale is the one with
the Lucky Strike pack after all. So how do I tell if it is authentic or a copy?
This poster was one of about a dozen other os, which I was very sure were
original. Joel Katte is interested in your expertise too. Inquiring minds want
to know!
Thanks, Michael, Cinecityposters.

Great question Michael...of course it may "date" a few of us... :)

I'd like to break this down into 2 parts--the 1st poster I ever owned and
the 1st poster I ever paid for.

My local movie theatre manager started giving me one-sheets when I was in
High School writing reviews for the school newspaper. I "needed" them for
the credit information when I was writing my reviews, or so I told him! (I
hadn't ever heard of a press book at that time, not that my small-town
theatre would have had one anyway!)

He gave me the one-sheet for "Paper Moon," which I still have today. I
wanted "The Poseidon Adventure" but he'd already given it away.

The first one-sheet I ever PAID for was "Summer of '42" which I bought via
mail order from Marc Ricci's (sp??) Memory Shop in New York. I think I paid
$2.75 for it. Incidentally, "Sumer of '42" was the first R-rated movie I was
able to see "on my own", so buying the poster seemed logical. Of course the
movie is rated PG today.

A lot of leading theme questions lately. Is it a virus or what? While some
theme questions can bear interesting fruit, I'm not quite sure why anyone's
first poster would be of much interest to anyone else... unless one is looking
to elicit stories about how people got into collecting movie posters in the
first place. In which case, why not ask that question?

Re: [MOPO] What was your very first poster?

2006-02-01 Thread Greg Douglass

I actually already wrore about my first poster...the one sheet from
MACABRE I bought...but I then started buying tons of stuff from Theater
Poster Exchange back in 1964. Lobby sets were $2.50, one sheets 75
cents, half sheets & inserts were either 50 or 75 cents. All prices were
the same , regardless of the title. I had lots of major 50s sc-fi/horror
title in a little trunk in my bedroom. (Unfortunately, I sold most of it
off in the mid-to-late 1980s...just before the prices exploded!)
I met a great guy named Malcolm Willits in Hollywood during a family
vacation, and he was very supportive in my interest in cinema material
(my parents just thought I was nuts!) He sold me a DEVIL COMMANDS one
sheet for five bucks, and lots of other wonderful material in his store.
In 1964/65, he turned me onto someone who had original Universal
material for sale. The prices were outrageous!!! Why, they wanted as
much as fifty bucks for stuff from BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN and THE WOLF
MAN! I tried to borrow the money from my Dad to buy some of the
material, but he just said absolutely not and tried to get me interested
in collecting something more normal...like..stamps or coins.
   Bo-o-oring!
Boy, if I just had a time machine to take me back to Hollywood Blvd
in 1964, I'd pony up that fifty bucks fearlessly , come back to 2006,
sell the BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN poster, and buy my Dad a nice house.
That'll show him!
The hobby has certainly changed price-wise in the last 40 years, but
it's remarkably similar in many ways!

[MOPO] Want List Blues

2006-02-01 Thread Steve
Bravo Michael!  I loved your post.  We've all been through it and learn from our mistakes.  What never seizes to amaze me is how dealers working in this field for many years don't know the difference between a one sheet and an insert, a US vs. foreign, and a re-release vs. an original.       I collect mainly best picture winners and Disney one sheets and am at a snag because I am down to the early 1930s and the cost at auction is the equivalent of a house note.  But still, I've posted a want list from time to time and gotten responses offering British Quads or French one sheet "originals" for more than the US originals are going at auction.  We learn to very quickly hit the delete key when certain dealers names show up.     Congrats on your Lost Horizon one sheet.  I had trouble finding that one until I used a magnifying glass to read the sma!
 ll print
in "Movie Collector's World."  I also had success with Freeman and a woman named Mahtab who hasn't been around in a while unless she changed her log on ID.     Don't give up posting your want list.  It's free and if anything you'll get a laugh out of the responses.       On another note, my first poster was given to me by the theater manager.  It's a one sheet from the Graduate which I put on my older sister's wall the day of her high school graduation.  I ruined it by writing with marker, "Congratulations Arlene!"  The first poster I bought was from the Sound of Music because it was and still is my favorite movie.       Steve

[MOPO] FS: SPARTACUS roadshow material: ONE SHEET ROADSHOW POSTER: SOUNDTRACK RECORD POSTERS

2006-02-01 Thread Kirby McDaniel

Roadshow 70mm material for SPARTACUS is scarce.

MovieArt has a near mint U.S. one sheet, roadshow for this film and
we are offering it for $3000. It is folded and unbacked.

Special display 22x28s with the paintingS of the cast members have
been seen and we have a few of these. Also roadshow
lobbies with the title card have turned up occasionally. But the one
sheet has only been seen a few times. I had one I bought
from Cinemonde in the late 1980s and it sold for $650. I know
another roadshow material collector purchased one within the
last several years for $2400.

The art is the same as the soundtrack record cover and similar to the
British quad. Of course, the format is the normal 27x41
format.

In addition to this material, MovieArt has had consigned to it some
very wonderful material from the holdings of a family-
owned record store that was shuttered in 1972. It was like a virtual
time capsule when the contents were recently sold for
a six figure sum. Over thirty thousand sealed LPs, 45s, 78s. I was
not consigned any records - I don't sell them - but I was allowed to
sell some of the display materials.

There is some Decca Records display material for the Soundtrack
Recording of SPARTACUS. Several different counter standees.
These are remarkably good, and one looks like the one sheet. There
is another special poster that has all of the character paintings
on one poster. This is an actual poster. These are not movie
posters. They are store displays, and are, if anything, probably
rarer than film posters. In the case of this film, however, maybe
not so much rarer because of the roadshow status.

Of course, 35mm release posters from SPARTACUS are not particularly
rare, but are not nearly as sought after as the roadshow
material.

If anyone would like to inquire about any of this material from
SPARTACUS, contact me. In addition, there is some other
display material that is quite good including some dynamite pieces on
SINATRA, PATSY CLINE, AL JOLSON, JULIE LONDON and
others.

Re: [MOPO] What was your very first poster?

2006-02-01 Thread toons
Hi, all. This is my first MoPo post.

My very first poster dates me back to the 70s as well. It was a one-sheet
for Ralph Bakshi's Heavy Traffic. I got it when I was a member of my college
film society. I think it was an extra copy we got by accident, otherwise it
would've been returned to the distributor. Either that or it was a spare.
Anyway, still have it, though it's in pretty rough shape. Gotten a better
copy since then.

Hope I did this right. Never posted to a listserv before.

We have to meet sometime...this is the second great thing you sent my

memorabilia and posters, and despite the terrible dip her reputation has
taken, I continue to be amazed at the variety of roles she played and
her incredible longevity in the business (ditto Susan Hayward, Barbara
Stanwyck, Claudette Colbert)..this clip was a fun and humorous bit of
eye candy.

The first movie poster I ever got and which still graces my family

Michael - I got it twice.
When I do a reply all, as I am doing here, to another AOL user like you
who posted, the one to MOPO goes through, the one to the AOL user gets
bounced.

Glad another AOL user suddenly had the light go on over their head about
this. It's not an anti-AOL conspiracy. It is well known from talking to
other ISPs that AOL have a regular policy of barring some ISPs from
their mail servers. It's called "business". That is, causing as much
disruption to your competitor's clients at the expense of your own
customers in the hope that out of frustration they'll turn to you for
business. Yes, right. I don't think so.

A small glimmer of hope. I had an email from a friend today who said, "I
finally realised AOL was stopping me get emails I need to get and have
now changed to another server."

Re: [MOPO] What was your very first poster?

2006-02-01 Thread Tom A. Pennock

My first poster was from a man in California by the name of John Cawley Jr.
He used to publish a magazine called "Private Screenings" in the early 1970's. I
believe he worked at  Walt Disney Studio's in the animation department. He
had an ad in his publication for a James Bond 1965 re-release one
sheet of "Dr. No & "From Russia With Love" (double bill) for only
$6.00   I was not aware of the way the poster looked so
I wrote to him and he kindly sent me an 8 x 10 color photograph of it. He
said he took photo's of all his posters and had 8 x 10's made. I can't
believe Mr. Cawley was so kind for only a $6.00 sale. Anyway I bought the one
sheet and it is displayed to this day on my closet door in a silver neilsen
frame. In December I bought the 1965 insert as a companion to celebrate my 40
years of being a 007 collector.

The first poster I remember getting was the insert from I WAS A TEENAGE

Re: [MOPO] Brokeback Blues Backlash: DIDN'T WEEP KONG EITHER

2006-02-01 Thread Susan Heim

I think Kirby, in a nutshell, summed up my feelings about Brokeback
Mountain. For me it was a very cerebral film and that was it's strength and
beauty to me also.  I did cry and in some parts of the film very hard, and
I was in a theater mostly of women seeing a matinee so there was a lot of tears
and sniffles going on.  I thought long and hard about why the film made me
so emotional and for me, personally, I not only felt the hopelessness of the
character's situation but also the struggle that still goes on today.
As for Kong, I liked it. While I agree none of the acting performances were
anything special, they were o.k., and I found myself on the edge of my seat a
few times and did manage to forget Kong wasn't real. It was a fun movie that I
saw with my nine year old daughter and we held hands and jumped in all the right
places. So, that adds to it's fun for me. Afterwards we came home and watched
the original King Kong late into the night. Coincendentally, we had just seen
the Jessica Lange version over Christmas.  So, we are all now King Konged
out!! (for awhile)...

We'll see. It opens at our local flea-pit of a
theatre this week and
making the exception to go see it.

I'm one of the few people ( it seems) that saw
beyond WAR OF THE WORLDS
as a science fiction blockbuster remake of a
fondly-remembered but hardy
classic 1953 SF film, that used H.G. Wells source
for the same thing
Wells did - to make a political statement.

A lot of people don't like that. They just want
"entertainment". Sadly,
thought-provoking films, are rapidly becoming a
thing of the past as
more and more people just want disposable eye candy
delivered in
fast-food size chunks for easy digestion and waste
removal.

That was also the mistake Peter Jackson made with
KONG, I think. He made
a film for people that wanted a film to take its
time to tell its story,
people it with more fully drawn characters than the
original and give
plenty of bang for the buck, along with some ideas
and concepts that
were almost Swiftian in their concepts.

Apart from the short attention span of many (most?)
film goers these
days, Jackson didn't consider that dreaded enemy
lurking out there that
Spielberg also encountered.. the Old Film Fart
Brigade (the OFFB) just
lying in wait, ready to hate any remake of a film
they choose to
perceive as an "untouchable classic"... and long
before it even opens.

It's only a movie folks, at the end of the day.
Enjoy, don't enjoy
but don't whinge. Especially if you haven't seen it.

Re: [MOPO] Brokeback Blues Backlash

2006-02-01 Thread Toochis Morin
I loved MUNICH, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, AND KING KONG. I
thought King Kong deserved more recognition. I know
one thing, it had everyone , even the guys weeping
when I saw it. It's amazing that it ocould get that
reaction out of me being that it was digital. But
Andy Serkis was amazing as Kong.

Also loved PARADISE NOW. I was bummed that AFTER
INNOCENCE didn't get a docu nomination.

Toochis

PS - What about those animation nominations? I
thought it was great that none were digital. There is
hope.

Re: [MOPO] Brokeback Blues Backlash

2006-02-01 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts

Looking forward to MUNICH. The fact that it got trashed by both "left"
and "right", was accused of being TOO pro-Palestinian, not
pro-Palestinian enough, and/or TOO pro-Israeli, or not pro-Israeli
enough probably meant he had got the even-handed approach he wanted.
We'll see. It opens at our local flea-pit of a theatre this week and
making the exception to go see it.

I'm one of the few people ( it seems) that saw beyond WAR OF THE WORLDS
as a science fiction blockbuster remake of a fondly-remembered but hardy
classic 1953 SF film, that used H.G. Wells source for the same thing
Wells did - to make a political statement.

A lot of people don't like that. They just want "entertainment". Sadly,
thought-provoking films, are rapidly becoming a thing of the past as
more and more people just want disposable eye candy delivered in
fast-food size chunks for easy digestion and waste removal.

That was also the mistake Peter Jackson made with KONG, I think. He made
a film for people that wanted a film to take its time to tell its story,
people it with more fully drawn characters than the original and give
plenty of bang for the buck, along with some ideas and concepts that
were almost Swiftian in their concepts.

Apart from the short attention span of many (most?) film goers these
days, Jackson didn't consider that dreaded enemy lurking out there that
Spielberg also encountered.. the Old Film Fart Brigade (the OFFB) just
lying in wait, ready to hate any remake of a film they choose to
perceive as an "untouchable classic"... and long before it even opens.

It's only a movie folks, at the end of the day. Enjoy, don't enjoy
but don't whinge. Especially if you haven't seen it.

Duane: Have you seen this picture? If so, back it up. If you
haven't, let
me ask you: are you just proud you're not "giving in" to what you
feel is
undeserved praise for a movie you had zero intention of seeing
anyway? I
don't see how anyone who's seen "Brokeback," even if they think it's
overpraised (as I do), will say the gay-theme is a "gimmick."

Hype, however, has nothing to do with quality and everything to do with
marketing and critical praise that feels disproportionate to what's being
sold. I could make a case for it, but "Brokeback" had danger written all
over it before it gained any traction to get where it is today. Focus
Features, the people who brought you "Lost in Translation" -- hardly a
major
film distributor or studio -- is responsible for "Brokeback." I'll
tell you
what "hype" is -- it's when a film opens on more than 1,500 screens, gets
saturation TV ads by a major distributor like Paramount or Warners or
Sony-Columbia or NewLine -- just pick any film that opens on any given
weekend, finishes #1 its first week -- and then disappears. That's
HYPE --
that's the "rat race" you describe that buys movies based on previews and
ads BEFORE reading product labels or giving two s about reviews
and the
like. That happens EVERY week. "King Kong" was the most hyped film
of the
year -- but you know what -- despite its flaws, it earned its hype and
produced the best value for my $10 in 2005.

"Brokeback" opened IN DECEMBER, very slowly, to give it a chance to
find an
audience BEYOND those who were gonna see it regardless. When it
opened, it
was on a handful of screens in New York and LA. That's it. I may not
think
the film is great cinema, but as a person who knows a little about
publicity
and marketing, the people at Focus Features are geniuses. It's not
perfect,
but if you're a p.r. person, at least "Brokeback" is nothing you have to
apologize about when the boss isn't looking. It's still a good film.
Just
not a great film.

As for the nominations, the thing I found interesting (and this goes in
waves) -- is every film nominated for Best Pic (Crash, Good Night and
Good
Luck, Capote, Brokeback Mountain) -- except Munich -- was independent,
the
type of film first shown in "Landmark" art house type theaters (Kirby's
favorite, hooray!). The only "big budget" picture "best pic" nominee
among
'em, and the budget itself was modest by Spielberg standards, is
"Munich,"
which got mixed reviews. As Spielberg says this week in Newsweek, he
expected to be "hit" by the "right" by his film -- but was shocked to
be hit
by what he felt were shrill critics on the "left." Personally, I was
hoping
"King Kong" or even "Cinderella Man" would sneak in there this
morning, just
to prevent the art house "snobs" (grin) from taking over -- because all 5
best pic nominees were message or preachy films, not crowd pleasers. And
that's a downer to me. Even "Match Point" got zonked, and it was Woody
Allen's best film since 1989.

-koose.

2006-02-01 Thread Rubenstein, Ira
I like this topic. I actually read it instead of my auto delete. :)

My FAVORITE poster in my collection as a true collector is also my
FAVORITE movie. SINGIN IN THE RAIN one sheet. It is extra special
since at one time fellow MOPO member SUE HEIM owned this very poster.
She also framed it. If that isn't karma, I don't know what is. :)

Can I add what my top FAVORITE want to buy someday when I have the money
poster is?

PHILADELPHIA STORY.

Some day.

Best,

Ira

Hi Mopo'ers

Just so we can all get an insight to one another

What is your favourite/best Movie Poster that you own?

Mine would have to be my rare Peter Strausfeld Quad of Mean Streets. I
only know of 2 other people who have this. Martin Scorsese being one of
them

Whats yours?

All the best
Andy
