I got to hear him give a talk about acting and it was the best I've heard in a
long time. I then met him in Austin at hte film festival a couple of years

Very saddened to hear that. Not only a good director, but an accomplished
actor as well. Most recently saw him in Michael Clayton. Will be missed.

[MOPO] FA: A wonderful selection of color stills, mini-LCs & English FOH LCs end in 12 hours, lots of joke low prices!

2008-05-27 Thread Bruce Hershenson
Maybe it it the Memorial Day holiday, and most collectors were away with
family, but there are just 12 hours to go, and there are still 220 lots at
99 cents, and 400 that are under $6! And since there are 2 to 25 stills (or
mini-LCs or English FOH LCs) in every lot, that means many of the above 400
under $6 each are under $1 per item!

There are lots of excellent titles here, and every one will sell WITH NO
INSANE $9 BUYERS PREMIUMS! We WILL put all your purchases in a single box or
flat pack, and, if you live in the U.S. the total shipping is $5, or actual
cost, plus $2 for packaging materials anywhere else.

Be sure to check out the original James Bond FOH LCs, the complete sets of
12 from both Godfather and Godfather II, and many other great items!

Don't forget to check out our 600 TUESDAY ITEMS on eBay (on our "
emovieposter.com" eBay account) sometime BEFORE they end Tuesday, May 27th,
beginning around 7 PM CST by going to
http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/1.html (remember that these are on
eBay!)

To me, the price this poster sold for is a great indicator that the day
of just putting up a poster on eBay and hoping buyers find it (and pay top
dollar) are fast coming to an end.

When I rarely look over ALL the movie posters and lobby cards on eBay
these days, I find a huge percentage of wildly over-priced items and outright
junk, and next-to-nothing of any desirability being offered at somewhat
reasonable prices.

I am not blaming the sellers for this. I think eBay does nothing to
attract new buyers, and their customer service is second to everyone, and they
do nothing to stop fraud, so why in the world SHOULD anyone in their right mind
continue to list movie posters there?

I believe the same is true in just about every other major collectible
field. Of course, I personally stuck by eBay, because I had been there so long,
and I hoped they would "wake up" and make some positive changes, but they show
no signs of it, so I am gone.

Another thing the price this poster sold for is a great indicator of is
changing tastes. Outside of some major film buffs and quite old folks, there is
no next-to-no one left who remembers stars like these. For 20 solid years I
have THOUGHT that there would be a re-discovery of these types of stars, but I
really don't see a sign of it.

Meanwhile, everyone seems to want to buy exactly the same titles and
stars. And the "Escapes" of this hobby keep selling for bargain prices. Will
its price be better or worse 10 years from now?

I paid $30.00 for it in a small collection I bought recently. I

Re: [MOPO] Off topic: Indiana Jones movie does NOT stink.

2008-05-27 Thread Walton, Jeffrey
My thoughts exactlyyou also have to take yourself back 20 years and
remember raiders of the lost arkthat was a fun film, entertaining in
everywayand unbelievable in everywayriding on the back of a
submarine, ghost and spirits spewing from the ark, climbing up his whip
to the back of a truck...come on, you all remember that, yet did you
stand up and proclaim "nonsense", "bad acting", "illogical" and the
likes...no you didn't, you went and saw Temple of Doomand that was
even more unbelievable, jumping out of a plane with nothing more than a
rubber raft, and yet you still saw the last crusadesthis film,
although 20 years later has the same look and feel which is a miracle in
and unto itself. Yes we too are 20 years older, and maybe you feel you
want a little more out of your movies but this to me brings back the
memories of why I loved the first three filmsit's an
adventurethat John Williams score still playing in my head

This was something that took my mind off the outside world into another
place and time...and that my friends, is what movie magic is all about.

Subject: [MOPO] Off topic: Indiana Jones movie does NOT stink.

** I want to thank all of the critics and other people who got a chance
to see this film before I did.

** As a result of the "apparent" consensus view that the new Indiana
Jones movie is "not good" -- we went to a sold-out showing this
afternoon with very low expectations. The result was an experience that
was in fact -- for us -- pretty darn good. It has some pacing issues --
but nit-pickers using yardsticks similar to what they'd apply to a
"serious picture" -- should NOT see this film. I agree it's pointless
to apply deep logic to an action-adventure franchise that's comparable
to James Bond. This is a popcorn experience that holds together pretty
well. In fact, if I have any criticism, it's that it feels a little
slow in spots.

** However, the action sequences are marvelous and all the gripes about
the CGI and the "fake looking" jungles and what not -- honestly, I don't
think the average person cares -- AS LONG as he or she feels engaged. I
think many saw the "paranormal / sci-fi" angle coming a mile away. I
agree the actors are going through the motions -- but I was not
expecting -- nor wanted -- anything out of the Lee Strasberg school of
acting anyway. I was led to believe the wonderful Karen Allen was only
a small part of this film. True, she has very few lines -- but she has
a LOT of screen time and I loved it. She looks much older, yet still
has that magnetic radiance that made me love her in "Animal House" --
and in the first Indy picture in 1981.

** What caught me off guard was the very last scene in the film. I
won't give it away but will say it's a crowd pleaser. While many will
feel it's cornball as all get out, I did not see it coming and felt it
was appropriate sentimentalism for a picture like this. It worked
marvelously and had us smiling as we walked out of the theater.

** Finally, I think there will always be a great reservoir of resentment
that makes it almost "fashionably cool to hate Spielberg." Some will
never concede he's good at anything except making money -- and feel they
must always qualify their praise -- that is, if must give him a prop for
anything he does well - they take something away that has the sum effect
of leaving people the impression that he is the purist definition of
being "overrated" and/or the personification of "mediocrity" in
Hollywood. The new Lucas/Spielberg effort was about an "8" on a 1-10
scale -- and thank goodness -- it was NOT the "Phantom Menace"
disappointment I feared. It will be forgotten in a few months -- but it
accomplishes what it sets out to do. More wonderful -- was seeing
hundreds of children in the audience, many with their parents,
thoroughly engrossed with the film. I always love to see this. Not
every scene must be filled with breath-taking action. There was even
applause as the end credits rolled. Most important, I did not feel that
my money -- or more important, my time -- were ripped off.

Subject: [MOPO] Off topic: Indiana Jones movie does NOT stink.

** I want to thank all of the critics and other people who got a
chance to see this film before I did.

** As a result of the "apparent" consensus view that the new Indiana
Jones movie is "not good" -- we went to a sold-out showing this
afternoon with very low expectations. The result was an experience
that was in fact -- for us -- pretty darn good. It has some pacing
issues -- but nit-pickers using yardsticks similar to what they'd
apply to a "serious picture" -- should NOT see this film. I agree
it's pointless to apply deep logic to an action-adventure franchise
that's comparable to James Bond. This is a popcorn experience that
holds together pretty well. In fact, if I have any criticism, it's
that it feels a little slow in spots.

** However, the action sequences are marvelous and all the gripes
about the CGI and the "fake looking" jungles and what not -- honestly,
I don't think the average person cares -- AS LONG as he or she feels
engaged. I think many saw the "paranormal / sci-fi" angle coming a
mile away. I agree the actors are going through the motions -- but I
was not expecting -- nor wanted -- anything out of the Lee Strasberg
school of acting anyway. I was led to believe the wonderful Karen
Allen was only a small part of this film. True, she has very few
lines -- but she has a LOT of screen time and I loved it. She looks
much older, yet still has that magnetic radiance that made me love her
in "Animal House" -- and in the first Indy picture in 1981.

** Finally, I think there will always be a great reservoir of
resentment that makes it almost "fashionably cool to hate Spielberg."
Some will never concede he's good at anything except making money --
and feel they must always qualify their praise -- that is, if must
give him a prop for anything he does well - they take something away
that has the sum effect of leaving people the impression that he is
the purist definition of being "overrated" and/or the personification
of "mediocrity" in Hollywood. The new Lucas/Spielberg effort was
about an "8" on a 1-10 scale -- and thank goodness -- it was NOT the
"Phantom Menace" disappointment I feared. It will be forgotten in a
few months -- but it accomplishes what it sets out to do. More
wonderful -- was seeing hundreds of children in the audience, many
with their parents, thoroughly engrossed

As much as I didn't care for the film, I enjoyed the fact that
Spielberg referenced earlier 1950s Hollywood films. As you recall, in
the original RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, the entrance to the tomb (or
whatever it was) rested on the light of the sun hitting a certain
place on the rock. This was a direct reference to SECRET OF THE INCAS
(PARAMOUNT 1954 with Chuck Heston). In the newest film he references
THE NAKED JUNGLE (PARAMOUNT 1954 with Chuck Heston) what with the
South American army ants. He must have seen these film when he was
probably around 8 years old. Incidentally, Spielberg and I grew up in
the same town (Scottsdale, AZ) and went to the same movie theatre when
we were children (The Kiva).

To me, the price this poster sold for is a great indicator that the
day of just putting up a poster on eBay and hoping buyers find it (and pay top
dollar) are fast coming to an end.

I believe the same is true in just about every other major
collectible field. Of course, I personally stuck by eBay, because I had been
there so long, and I hoped they would "wake up" and make some positive changes,
but they show no signs of it, so I am gone.

Another thing the price this poster sold for is a great indicator of
is changing tastes. Outside of some major film buffs and quite old folks, there
is no next-to-no one left who remembers stars like these.

Will
its price be better or worse 10 years from now?

accurate, it really is a minor defect in my eyes, especially on a 68 year old
poster.

I paid $30.00 for it in a small collection I bought recently.
I hoped it would go higher but I had no real expectations. When $700.00 was
mentioned I kind of thought "h, oklets see about that!".

We should poll all the mopo members to see how many actually have
SPARTACUS material that is specifically NOT what sam at Posteritati
asked about. in reading sam's very concise email, he couldnt have
