Michael,

Well, since you asked, I prefer the '66 one sheet simply because the artwork
and title fill up a large part of the poster. On all the others, including your
very nice half sheet, the artwork is small compared to the vast extent of the
red background, which takes up most of the square inches of the poster.
Actually, I never liked the posters for FANTASTIC VOYAGE all that much. It is
representative, but when you think of all the other great scenes they could
have used instead... or combined multiple scenes into a fantastic montage like
the old sf posters from the 1950's did. That could have been great. As is, the
posters for the film look like paperback book covers from the period. Kinda
boring.

[MOPO] ebay paypal requirement.....

2009-07-16 Thread Michael B
wasn't it about a year ago that ebay mandated that all sellers accept paypal?

yet, ebay.fr (france) does not have this requirement.? i approximate that only
60% of sellers accept paypal.

when i ask sellers if they accept paypal, they respond that i can send cash in
a certified letter.? Guess how many times i did that?? ZERO.

so, often there i items i cannot buy.

[MOPO] FAVORITE FILM THAT YOU HAVE TO DEFEND

2009-07-12 Thread Michael B
most of our favorite films that we watch over and over, again, share tons
of loyalty by others. (CASABLANCA, DOUBLE INDEMNITY, VERTIGO, etc. is on
everyone's list.)

BUT, what is a favorite film of your that you need to defend? that is,
what film do you believe is GREAT but lacks the enthusiasm of others?

my answer is THE PARADINE CASE.

perhaps, there might be a collector who might have been happy with the
mere top portion.

moreover, perhaps money was wasted for the bottom portion.

REAR WINDOW might be the only hitchcock title to which i own NADA, whicj i
would love to buy. but, it is a high ticket item.

great film, great concept, great cast, fun movie (except the death
of the little dog)- but silly ending with the flashbulbs.

2009-07-09 Thread Michael B

I informed he seller they weren't orig and he didn't care.
He sent a nasty response.

I reported it to ebay as fraudulent.

So?I?bid?$1?on?his?buy?it?now.

(Let's do this to the sellers that are ruining ebay!)

IN THE OLD DAYS OF EBAY when buyers' identities were not hidden, warnings
could have been given to the winner immediately AFTER the auction ended.*?
seems to me, the hiding of identities allows fraud.? but ebay sees it
differently.? i liked the old way!!!

michael

*since ebay prohibits interference, i had occassionally
written..CONGRATS.? beautiful piece.? i would have bid, but i do not
bid on reprints.? :)

[MOPO] the tasteless, classless post of Rodxmorgan

2009-06-26 Thread Michael B
I do not know Rodxmorgan. Who he is is unimportant.

But i did see his post hawking Michael Jackson memorabilia within minutes
of the announcement of Michael's death.

I don't need lectures on First Amendment rights. Rather, this is a
discussion about someone being grossly classless and uncaring. Michael
probably
will not know of the classlessness of Rodxmorgan. Michael might have been
flattered. But those touched and saddened by the unexpected death of
Michael must have felt Rodxmorgan's insensitivity.

You have to look at the totality of the circumstances. While people were
reading MOPO mail prior to the announcement and being tuned into Fox News
or CNN or the radio, did not need to see this insensitivity.

I remember as a little boy when President Kennedy was killed, tons of
commemorative coins, plaques, etc. hit the market. YES, for profit! And the
Elvis souvenirs! Bruce had a one sheet of Ed McMahon end last night, and a
half sheet started last night. I didn't see him shout, GET EM WHILE THEIR
HOT.

It is all in the approach.Rodxmorgan approached this in a classless
manner.

We all know the Michael jokes, yet i don't believe Letterman or Leno (if
they weren't pre-empted) or anyone in Vegas was doing them last night.

I once asked a question on MOPO as to whether the death of a star generates
extra value in posters. If it is true that it does, it isn't ghoulish.

The problem with Rodxmorgan was his approach. It was wrong.

Re: [MOPO] what premium should you pay for near mint posters?

2009-06-22 Thread Michael B
the point of my post was to ask how much more are you willing to pay for MUCH
BETTER CONDITION?

also, the post shows what we all know-different venues have different price
structures.

bruce was super honest in his description.? you know that anyone who gets his
poster--especially collectors of Rock Hudson--will be SUPER HAPPY because the
condition does not warrant top dollar, so you're getting a nice piece at a
fraction of what a fixed priced dealer would sell it for.? and,?the poster is
truly presentable!!!?

and considering that most of bruce's buyers on the lesser expensive items win
many lots in one night, throwing this poster into the batch for whatever amount
it generates will certainly please the winner.

I think that if you look at the sales results from emovieposter:

TARNISHED ANGELS 1958 1sheet - linen; **FBO VG $94.00 04/07/2009
TARNISHED ANGELS 1958 1sheet - FF; **FBO G-VG $78.00 01/01/2009
TARNISHED ANGELS 1958 1sheet - linen; **FBO VG-Fn $125.00 12/02/2008
TARNISHED ANGELS 1958 1sheet - FF; **FBO VG $75.00 11/13/2008
TARNISHED ANGELS 1958 1sheet - FF G-VG $54.00 04/24/2008
TARNISHED ANGELS 1958 1sheet - linen VG-Fn $129.49 12/11/2007
TARNISHED ANGELS 1958 1sheet - FF; **FBO lesser $20.00 05/09/2006
TARNISHED ANGELS 1958 1sheet - **FBO G $34.00 05/13/2003

Suggests that in poor condition this poster is more realistically a $20 item.

Maybe even less. Personally, I'm not going to be bidding against you!

Its a little tricky to decipher these results, because they both span multiple
years, include free books (not that anyone thinks that effects the price), some
arelinen backed, and Bruce typically under grades the items.

However, the fact that it never sells for more that $129 linen backed (a $100
process), suggests that this poster may even be worthless in this condition.

As for the mint copy. I'd venture a value of $50 -- and declining rapidly.
Check out: http://www.emovieposter.com/imagearchive/poster/147294.html which
sold for $54 a year ago.

Evan

Times Square was one of the most interesting places on Earth for many years.

I always liked it because it was an anachronism of life..

in the winter a limousine could be dropping off a guy in $1000 tailored suit
with a fur-coated babe on each arm and they might have to step over a homeless
guy sleeping on the subway grating (warm air comes up through the gratings),
there would be a couple society ladies headed up to Broadway to see a play and
then a couple hookers rousting a guy while a couple dopers would be buying from
a pusher. Every kind of person you could imagine was standing on that street
trying to make plans

One of the most obvious places was? a pinball later video game parlor called
Fascination and Melody Burlesque was down the street.
There were several theatres showing Kung-Fu flicks and to this day I have never
been able to find a copy of one of my favorites - Mad Monkey Kung-Fu. I
remember seeing it on a double bill with the 12 Drunken Masters

In front of some of the theatres were hawkers trying to get you in and there
was the porno bookstore on ground level that had the private booths upstairs.
All the babes would be advertising to get you to walk into their booth for a
show. I remember running into a comic book dealer friend up there once and even
though he was a buddy, he was so embarassed he left almost immediately

There was a Howard Johnsons and if I remember correctly Dempsey's too. I think
Dempseys had a sign that told you how great their pie was and there was a
Nathan's hot dogs joint. I was surprised on more than one occasion to see Carol
Channing, Walter Cronkite (Walter is about to take his last breath folks) or
other actors there. Once - and this would be specifically be 1978 because of
the girlfriend I was with - we were having milkshakes and Will Geer sat down at
our table (Nathan's had those long 16 people tables). I asked him for his
autograph and he said Sure. Just let me finish my hot dog.

I know I had seen teh flea circus that Richard Del Belso mentioned, but I was
pretty young. Maybe 5-6, so I don't recall any of it

sadly, all of this is gone now.. Left in our collective memories which will
also be gone to the black hole at some point and all that will remain will be
pictures.

I lived in Queens and the theatre I most often went to as a kid young teen
was the Lefferts Theatre on Lefferts Boulevard and 120th street. I remember
seeing a double bill Hard Day's Night HELP! in 1965. I was with my 2 brothers
(I was 8, my brothers 10 11). Before the movie they had the Dave Clark 5
short, Manfred Mann and some others and outside they had scads of posters
including the billboard on the side of the building that was 120th st. The
Beatles heads were enormous. They also had freebies like a beatles wig and
stuff. It was a big weekend and the theatre was jam packed and if I remember
correctly, it was just 75 cents!! We were there all day long. Nobody chased us
out after the first feature. Not too long ago I was able to score the Dave
Clark 5 1sh that was displayed. The theatre was great - they had stills and
posters and lobby cards all over the outside and on the inside too.

the Lefferts was a fun theatre too. Saturdays always had matinees and they may
have been just a quarter. Always a double bill, cartoons, in the mid-60s they

what was the name of that small chain in Manhattan? where you could get a lunch

They used to have a grill in the window and you could order either a New York

Always a double bill, cartoons, in the mid-60s they
showed the Superman, Batman, Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers serials - one episode

This week, we are asking you for the most evil movie villain. We are
arbitrarily excluding all monsters, animated characters, and any supernatural
characters (with the exception of Conrad Veidt in Thief of Bagdad, because he
is evil in a non-supernatural way, and he gives such a great performance!). We
are trying to focus on those villains who are real human beings, and are the
epitome of evil.
IMPORTANT! You might scan over the list and see Tony Perkins in Psycho and
think that you have found your answer, but we encourage you to look over the
entire list very closely, and see if you don't think that there are clearly
more evil villains than he! You are welcome to vote for any of the villains

[MOPO] poster values in circulation

2009-06-05 Thread Michael B
THE ULTIMATE GUESSING GAME:?? What is the value of ALL hollywood movie
posters in circulation?

?

factors to consider:

??--heritage signature auctions say that it sells over a million dollars?per
auction.? PLUS their weekly stuff and ebay.

??--emovieposter probably averages 700 posters a week (i?approximated this
number since some weeks bruce doesnt sell posters--just?cards,
photographs/stills, foreign, etc.).? emovieposter's better auction could
average 500 per piece and be over?4,000?of those pieces yearly.? i am sure
bruce can help.

? --consider those in private collections

? --add christies', sothebys, bonhams, etc. (worldwide)

? --add ebay.

??--add those rare 100,000 posters.

??--and dont forget the 75.00 poster en route to me now? (LOL)

(i realize some get resold, resold, resold..)

so GUESS HOW MANY?JELLY-BEANS IN THE JAR.

SERIOUSLY..what is the value of ALLL THE POSTERS OUT
THERE

I think a graphically beautiful insert from a 1937?
Monogram picture?
has greater value that a pristine one sheet from Breakfast at Tiffany's.?

i agree with that premise.? however, i would say it differently...? any
great poster from a great movie of the 30s,40s as far more impressive than a
poster of the 60s+?

i still dont understand the high values placed on 007, star wars, japanese art
of godzilla, etc.

maybe, my prejudice is just that artistically, i love the well filmed bw
movies.? sure, i love great surround sound films or?a great modern movie?,
but i wouldnt want the posters for them

private emails are circulating):

1.? i gave up looking at the site because it took forever to load into my

Anyway, Morrie tried some new things this year, some worked well, but many did
not...I believe for next year there will changes...for the best!

?

As for the catalogues, this was the first time I received a catalog for the
Columbus auction, I've only receive flyers. If you were at the auction you
could get a catalog free of charge.

They are not the quality of Heritages auctions. Heritage has the resources and
personal to put together their beautiful catalogs, pictures, and
descriptions...plus from what I understand, they print their own. Morrie did
this on his own, with a lot of help from his family...whom I respect.

?

If you viewed the online catalog, you would have received a better description
and picture than the catalog, plus if you really wanted to bid, many options to
do so...including coming to Cinevent to be a part of the poster community as
those who did.

?

There was a time that Morrie's auction was one of the biggest and best. A lot
of high end poster were there, if you were after them. Heritage and of course
Bruce went to Morrie auctions,? learned from them, and did their own. We need
Morrie auctions, Cinevent (to survive) needs it, and we collectors and dealers
need it. To bash it without giving Morrie some constructive opinions/criticisms
will only help hurt our future of this business including the live auctions
that are doing well at this time.

I just went on priceline and bid $40 a night, won and stayed at the Sheraton
Suites about 15 munutes away. Two big flat screens, couch, fridge, microwave,
great free computer area with printers, pool, close to nice restaurants, etc.
Rental car was cheap and with my GPS I got to and from the Ramada with ease.
I?knew I didn't want to stay at the Ramada?so I made do and?saved?$ and in
style. ?As far as the auction went, I was one of two other bidders there for
the last couple of hours on Sunday. Most everything was passed. I don't see how
Mo could afford a more expensive venue. As far as the dealers go, they need to
be in one big area room. The 6th floor venders' rooms did't look near as busy
as the basement dealers and the basement area seemed cramped.

?

FUNNIEST POST ? great advice

stay away from the cheaper franchise hotels like ramada where standards vary
and opt for the top shelf stuff, like Sheraton that must meet high corporate
standards.and bargains can be had in this economy.

I want to show a side-by-side comparison of one of the earliest and most
notorious fakes in our hobby, the lobby card set from A Fistful of Dollars.
? I call this A Fistful of Comparisons. Go to
http://www.emovieposter.com/club/staticpages/fistfulofrepros/fistful_of_comparisons.htm
to see some really first rate side-by-side scans of both an original card and
a fake, plus detailed descriptions in words, prepared by our incomparable
Phillip Wages! In addition, we also have some tantalizing written evidence that
seems to show that there is a good chance that the original card we show was
not only the actual card that was used to make the reproduction, but also
creates the real possibility that the fakes were created by Professor Powers
(if you are not aware of who this is, go to
http://www.angelfire.com/stars4/mymovieposters/aboutme.htm, either before or
after you view the above page (and please know that, even though Professor
Powers has all kinds of scholarly information about himself, no one in the
hobby has ever seen or heard of him, and many in the hobby think that
Professor Powers was created by the people!

[MOPO] inserts containing scene cards

2009-05-18 Thread Michael B

often, when inserts include a scene card (or two), it detracts from the overall
artwork---especially of the scene is boring or unimportant..

however, there are some GREAT scenes included in?some insert posters:

ALL ABOUT EVE shows Marilyn Monroe.

SUNSET BOULEVARD has that great pool.

questions:?

?? 1.? is the artwork of an insert compromised with the inclusion of a scene
card?

??? 2.? what are the best scene card images contained in a poster?

i did look at bruce's 3sheets last night, and some pieces of good titles are

thoughts---

1.? i just removed a 3sheet from my wall, and was able to place 6 inserts in
that space.? i hate not displaying beautiful pieces.?

2.? i was tracking a one sheet and 3sheet at heritage of the same title (both
of linen) at their last signature auction.? the 3sheet was?sold at at steal.? i
cannot believe how low, and the one sheet did better. the same one sheet title
unbacked with bruce 2 weeks ago and one on?ebay six months ago sold for more
than the three sheet.? unless you have the wall space

4.? over time, i believe that inserts have gained in popularity over the other
sizes.? half sheets are my least favorite.?

I think a number of poster collectors have dreams of having a giant 3sheet or
6sheet hanging in their office or family room etc. ?I would love to have a 6
sheet mad mad world framed in my office (i.e. one whole wall). ?The cost of
linenbacking and framing a large format poster is daunting. ?I know that when I
buy a 3-sheet or 6-sheet, I never have immediate plans for it. I assume that
somewhere down the line I will linen/frame it and display it. But I would
venture to guesss that most people who buy these large posters do nothing with
them. ?They sit in a closet somewhere.

Subject: [MOPO] A couple of questions about YOUR opinion of three-sheets
and six-sheets

I am currently auctioning three-sheets and six-sheets so of course they
are on my mind!

Here are my questions:

1) I see a fair number of the three-sheets and six-sheets where they are
currently below the price of the corresponding one-sheet! Is that often
the case, and if so, why do you think this happens?

2) I sometimes hear collectors say, I would buy three-sheets and
six-sheets, EXCEPT they are too big for my walls. But many of these
same collectors have HUNDREDS or THOUSANDS of one-sheets that sit folded
up in boxes, and are never displayed. So, if it is going to sit in a
box, what difference do they make if they are one-sheets, three-sheets
or six-sheets?

3) Some ad campaigns have three-sheets and six-sheets where they are
simply stretched-out versions of the one-sheets (like Forbidden
Planet), but other times the three-sheets and six-sheets have completely
different images. I think that when the three-sheets and six-sheets have
similar images to the one-sheet they should sell for somewhat more (due
to the greater size and rarity), but if they have superior images they
should sell for a lot more, and when they have inferior images (like in
the case of The Sin of Nora Moran three-sheet, which is nowhere as nice
as the one-sheet) they should sell for a lot less. What do YOU think?

wouldn't it suffice to say that a BRITISH QUAD is a poster printed in the UK to

wouldn't it suffice to say that an AUSTRALIAN DAYBILL is a poster printed

isn't that simple?

for every film there is always?one poster that?has the best artwork and mood,

Re: [MOPO] My frustrations searching for old U.K. posters.

2009-04-23 Thread Michael B
with all this talk about british quads, are we overlooking a discussion of
GREAT BRITISH FILMS that have 14x36 inserts and 22x28 half sheets and 27x42
one sheets?

ironically, i purchased THE BRIGHTON STRANGLER half sheet and THE FALLEN
IDOL insert from bruce Tuesday and tonite, respectively. both items are
american posters and/or displayed in the US theatres.

THE LONG DARK HALL, another british film, has awesome artwork..and
cheap! this past year i got the one sheet and insert on ebay for 9.99 and
14.99, respectively.

BRIEF ENCOUNTER is a great film for the story, british streets, trains,
restaurants, etc.

so do not overlook paper used in the USA of the standard US
theatre sizes to advertise a british film.

[MOPO] poster sizes actually vary

2009-04-20 Thread Michael B
today i measured 4 three sheet (framed) posters. none of them measured
the full 81 inches. 2 were less than 41 inches wide.

recently, i purchased a half sheet of the 40s THE THREE STRANGERS. it
measured 21 x 28, and was clearly not trimmed.

bruce h. made a correction recently to his auction description of his one
sheet (i think it was KISS OF DEATH), and he announced in his listing that
although one side measured one inch less than the standard 27x41, it was
NEVER trimmed.

i am selling a NAZI AGENT on linen..and when i measured it, it was less
 than 26 3/4 x less than 40 3/4

my NOW VOYAGER is less than 41 inches.

havent we always bee led to believe that the sizes were ALWAYS UNIFORM

i am sure this can lead to an interesting discussion---not only with the
issue of different sizes, but the problems of framing.

Hey Michael,
I can tell you from experience there usually isn't an interest in used
frames other than antique frames. However, your 3 sheet frames with plexiglass
should be an easy sell if they are in good condition. I have tons of
customers who routinely ask me to ship 3 sheet frames to the east coast and,
unfortunately, it is too expensive to do. Also, remember, most collectors
nowadays know the problems with framing a collectable in glass. One thing for
a
potential buyer to remember is that you can always switch the glass for
plexiglass. I ship plexiglass by itself all the time for collectors that have
had their items framed in glass until now. So, good luck.
