[MOPO] Profiles in History Morrie Everett auction delivery

2015-07-22 Thread Michael Wong
I read mopo online so not sure how to post to an existing thread, but yes I got
my Profiles package on Monday and I bought post auction. I purchased sight
unseen so was very pleased with the condition of what I bought.Dan the Man
did an excellent job of describing condition.

Somewhere on their site, I remember seeing the prices realized. It might have
been on the actual auction software site on the day after the auction. That
might not be up anymore.

Hi Mopo,
I had to skip the auction due to trying to close on a house. I was
able to buy a couple things post auction. Does anyone know who bought the
earlier Hitchcock lobbies?

[MOPO] Question re Priority package rates

2013-07-19 Thread Michael Wong

Hi,
I've been selling exclusively photos lately, but sold a lobby yesterday. Went
to the PO this am and larger Priority package rates have gone up again.

The medium flat rate box will no longer hold an 11x14 object. The large one
will and is 16.85. Regional rate is a little more to NYC.

I may try to sneak it thru sandwiched between two med flat rate boxes. I was
told by my clerk friend that they would charge me the regional rate if I did
that, but if they let it go it would be 12.35.

Is there any more economical way to mail lobby cards Priority? First class?

[MOPO] How to authenticate a Rebecca R40 Belgian?

2013-06-27 Thread Michael Wong

A little help?

Bought one this weekend which might be authentic and it might be signed by
Larry Olivier.

The poster is 14x19.75, but the reserve (top?) might be trimmed. Imprime en
Belgique in lower left corner. Bruxelles address, phone and text in lower
right. Paper on front is kind of semi-glossy, it has a slight sheen. On back
browning and not coated.

My friend who has many Belgian noir posters thinks it it right. How do you
tell?

Thanks, Michael, Cinecityposters

[MOPO] Question about photos glued in a scrapbook

2010-04-16 Thread Michael Wong
Hi all,
I have a scrapbook of mid 30's photos that are glued at the corners to
scrapbook pages of heavyweight, porous black paper. Leslie Howard Scarlet
Pimpernal, Noel Coward, Private Lives of Henry VIII, Things to Come,
Transatlantic Tunnel, etc.

Anyone have any luck getting photos off of such a page.

The scrapbook likely dates to the 30's and is probably originally from the
UK. Before I acquired the book, it looks like someone was able to get some
photos off the pages. There was a dollop of glue in each corner.

Thanks, Michael, Cinecityposters/HTML

Re: [MOPO] Fun MOPO Thread

2008-11-14 Thread Michael Wong
Hi all,
In the SF Bay Area, I remember The Premiere Movie on Channel 2. It showed
the same movie on weekend nights and maybe Friday and Monday too. I remember
watching the same movie on multiple nights. I especially remember watching
Billy Budd several times.

We were lucky. In the early 60's the Big Show played every weekday afternoon
on Channel 7(?). On 2 days a week I saw just about every 50's sci fi/horror
film. There was also a Sword and Sandal Day (Remember the Sons of Hercules).
Then we had Dialing For Dollars on Channel 2 at 1 during the week. I swear I
saw both Shock Corridor and Naked Kiss there. Last but certainly not least
Gil Hile's All Night Movies. I saw everything from Max Ophuls' Letter to an
Unknown Woman to John Derek football movies.

Sigh, Michael, Cinecityposters

P.S. Has anyone else been getting odd error messages on Paypal lately?/HTML

Re: [MOPO] off topic: I'm selling my Nikon N90s

2008-11-05 Thread Michael Wong
Hi Kirby,
Thanks, but your memory is faulty. I rescued your camera at that little
hotel in Beverly Hills where we stayed for the Gunnar Nelson Butterfield's
auction. You were lucky to have a quiet room in the back. In mine up front, I
could
hear everything at the front desk and I had a little TV mounted to the top of
the wall like in a jail. I remember watching the X-Files episode in which
Mulder and Scully search for a lake monster.

I came away with 2 minor lots. Hope you did better than I did!

Michael, Cinecityposters

And to Michael Wong -- yes, Michael, this is the camera you kept me
from LOSING at the Beverly
Garland. Thanks again -- it gave me much good use and still works
great.

Re: [MOPO] Tracking an insured Priority package

2008-09-22 Thread Michael Wong
PJ,
There must be some tracking capability. How else would they know to pay off
on the insurance if someone claims that an insured package wasn't delivered.
They might charge you a fee to do it, but there must be some way.

My policy is to self insure all packages under $50 and send with DC. I guess
I'm going to have to use DC for all packages now.

Maybe I'm being too suspicious, but the buyer didn't report the possible
non-delivery until over a month after I mailed and informed him. He didn't
even
say that it hadn't been delivered. He said he thought that it hadn't arrived.
He wasn't sure? I think/hope he is legit but his ebay id is hollyworld.

Thanks, Michael, Cinecityposters

 Mike,

Years ago I went through this, too. I was pretty much out of luck. The PO
doesn't track anything without Delivery Confirmation (DC).

I learned early that DC is the most important 35-40 cents you can spend on
a US
   package.

Suggest you go to PO and talk to them. Things might have changed since I
had that issue.

   Good luck!

[MOPO] Second Chance offer

2008-09-21 Thread Michael Wong
Hi again,
How does this work? Do I have to file a non-paying bidders complaint against
the original winner before making the 2nd chance offer? Do I set the price
of the 2nd chance offer or must it be the amount that would have been the
highest bid if the original winner had not bid? This item was bid up
significantly
by the last 2 bidders. Without the winner the high bid would have been
only 40% of their winning bid.

I specified that the term of the item be indefinite. I'm thinking these end

[MOPO] Blocking bidders

Hi all,
Back from Cinecon and now back to ebay.

Do you all ever block bidders? One occasional buyer of $10 photos insists on

I really want to block her as a bidder, but are there any consequences to

I'll have many 30's Universal photos including some stunning horror stills, a

[MOPO] Question about Cinevent

I'm planning a trip from San Francisco to Columbus for Cinevent.

Has anyone found a cheap way to fly from the Bay Area (Oakland) to Columbus?

Is it true that Columbus is just over 100 miles and an easy drive from
Cleveland? The Cleveland to Columbus leg seems to be the stumbling block
flying.
And no Amtrak.

So far I'm able to fly Oak-Cleve and Columbus-Oak for about $350 on
Southwest. I'm thinking I'll rent a car in Cleveland and just drive to
Columbus.

[MOPO] FA: Unusual Charlton Heston item

2008-04-12 Thread Michael Wong
Hi MOPO,
Greetings from photo country! (although those of you who know me know I still
dabble in posters)

I have a couple of studio produced jumbo stills of Heston from El Cid closing
on Monday evening. They are close to lobby card sized and have, at that
size, a panoramic effect. Since my scanner bed is smaller than the photos,
parts
of the edges of the image have been cut off in my scans.

[MOPO] Eastern European 1930's heralds?

2008-01-13 Thread Michael Wong
Hi all,
Anyone know anything about Eastern European (Czech?) from the '30's. Most
are about 4x8.5 and folded in half. They appear to be on cheap, porous paper
like US heralds and appear to be stone lithoed. The cast list in in English.
Everything else is in Czech? I think they are vintage, but don't have any
real knowledge about them. I have seen them in the stock of European and
Canadian dealers.

Here's an example:

[MOPO] Ebay fee question

2007-11-21 Thread Michael Wong
Hi,
Has anyone else had any problems with higher ebay fees in the last 2 weeks?

I post my auctions using Andale and for the past 2 weekends, auctions
starting below 10 cost .75 instead of .40 and those starting 10-25 cost .95
instead
of .60. I'm wondering if that is because of the free gallery promotion that
ebay is having. I also noticed a charge of .35 when I made a normally free
revision to an ebay auction until I went back and removed the gallery selection.

Or did I miss a new round of ebay increases?

Re: [MOPO] 99 Cent Opening Bids--- A Help or a Hinderance?

2007-10-27 Thread Michael Wong
Hi MOPO,
It would be a mistake to say that the value of a poster is what is sells for
at ebay auctions.

There are still multiple markets for posters. I have sold items in my ebay
store that went begging for less in my ebay auctions. There are many
occasional ebay buyers who don't follow ebay that closely, but do logon from
time to
time to make a purchase.

Recently, I sold items at a show for more than I had asked at ebay auction.
Sometimes the right buyer just comes along. Ask dealers like Kirby who does a
thriving off-ebay business.

Bruce operates under a unique business model. He can offer everything for
.99 because

1. Most of his auctions are consignments. He takes no risk. In fact, it's
better for him that an item sell cheap than not at all.

2. He generates so much more traffic than anyone else.

3. Because of his volume of sales, the items that sell low are more than
made up for by the items that high.

Happy Halloween, Michael

[MOPO] Bride of Frankenstein question and auction

Hi Trick or Treaters,
Was Bride rereleased prior to 1939? See my ebay auction for a portrait of
Lancaster and Karloff:

As indicated, I think it is original release but it has 2 1938 date stamps on

[MOPO] Ebay Second Chance Offer

2007-10-16 Thread Michael Wong
Hi,
I have a occasional repeat bidder who is inexplicably not paying for her last
2 items. If I make a second chance offer to the underbidder, must I file
non-paying bidder complaint on the winning bidder? Since she is a repeat
bidder,
I don't really want to do that, but I don't really want to pay the fees
either, if she is defaulting. Can I make a 2nd chance offer and still hold the
winning bidder responsible if the underbidder declines.

Anyone have any experience with second chance offers?

just more claptrap from ebay..
the only thing I will guarantee is that prices
will continue to fall for 95% of all items sold
and fees will continue to rise.. squeezing even
further what has continually become a profit
margin for sellers that has become so thin that
the value of eBay to your total overall

possessions, wave a final goodbye to their
landline telephones and change cubicles.

But what John Donahoe, president of one of
eBayÂ’s most important divisions, really wants is
for his colleagues to change the way they work.
“I’m a big fan of breaking patterns,” he said.

Mr. Donahoe, 46, is a deputy to eBayÂ’s chief
executive, Meg Whitman, 50, and, many people in
the industry say, her likely successor when she
ultimately steps down. In his two years as head
of eBay Marketplaces a division responsible
for 70 percent of the companyÂ’s revenues and an
even greater percentage of its profits he has
set out to change the companyÂ’s colors substantially.

Mr. Donahoe has led the acquisition of companies
like the ticket exchange StubHub, helping eBay
morph from a single auction-oriented marketplace
into a portfolio of retail sites. This year,
revenue-sharing deals brokered by Mr. Donahoe
with

His newest move, the cubicle swap, is intended
to bring together the engineers and the

while weaning employees off their landline

calling service Skype, which eBay acquired for $2.6 billion in 2005.

Whether or not these initiatives work may
determine whether eBay can build on a healthy
holiday season and combat competitive threats
like GoogleÂ’s recent inroads into e-commerce.

“All our businesses need to do well, but John’s

two decades to become its chief executive. At 6

wooing them with a friendly, accessible demeanor.

Thomas Tierney, an eBay director who is also a
Bain alumnus, said Mr. Donahoe had “an uncanny
ability to connect with everyone from receptionists to chief executives.”

Mr. Donahoe, the father of four, is known at
eBay for his boundless energy, waking every

[MOPO] MOPO] Limits of insurance, reissues, back button on ebay

Hi MOPO,
A few miscellaneous questions:

1. I mail priority with delivery confirmation and self insure cheaper
packages. Does insurance cover a package from the po to the recipient's
address
only? After the package is delivered to the specified address and so confirmed
by the po, do I have any more responsibility?

2. Does anyone know the years of release of the recent reissues of Peeping
Tom and Plan 9 from Outer Space?

3. Has anyone noticed that when you have searched for a list of items on
ebay, click on one of the ads and then click further on that ad (say to look at
an image or see the bidders), you can't use the back button to get back to the
original list? I'm thinking this is rogue logic from their attempt to
restrict access to ebay buyers.

One is a 1940? one-sheet Disney's Festival of hIts that features Snow White

White reissue?

I also have a couple of chromolitho sepia toned lobby cards of the dwarves.
These have WD and RKO copyright and credits. In lower right border it says

[MOPO] Hepburn Little Women os styles

2006-10-31 Thread Michael Wong
Hi MOPO,
Is anyone out there familiar with any variant os styles or early reissues of
Hepburn's Little Women. The one I have is a stone litho done in pastel colors
and imho opinion captures the tone of the novel better than the dark version
sometimes seen at auction. My guess is that it is some sort of early reissue.
Any of you warhorses know the paper on this title?

Hi MOPO,
Has anyone else noticed that Ebay has been very spotty about sending out

Hi again,
I had actually logged on to ask a question when I saw the sincityposters post

[MOPO] Question re Taxi Driver insert

2006-10-12 Thread Michael Wong
Hi MOPO,
Just picked up a rolled Taxi Driver insert at a local flea market. As I
recall, this is one of the questionable titles, but this one is showing some
wear and the seller had about 20 inserts from 1976 titles. The only other one
I
thought worth buying was an Outlaw Josey Wales, also rolled. Other titles
were One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Godfather 2.

My question is about the coloring on the Taxi Driver. There seems to be a
bit of fading at the bottom right, but the blue backround is lighter at the
bottom in the credits area than in the upper Boulevard of Broken Dreams image
of
DeNiro. All printing is in black except that the On every street in every
city in this country... text is in medium yellow.

Is this the normal coloration?

[MOPO] Question re Night of the Living Dead os variation

2006-09-17 Thread Michael Wong
Hi all,
I'm looking at a NOTLD os which is bw, matte, on heavy paper (not as heavy
as a 30x40). It is from Image Ten/Continental Distributors who along with
Walter Reade were the original theatrical distributors. At the top is a quote
from a Pittsburgh newspaper. It has the same screaming faces image collage as
the glossy green and black os.

I'm at a loss as to what this is. Is it the original theatrical os? I
always thought that the glossy green and black os was the original. Or is it
some
sort of reissue? This poster likely came from a second run theater

Hi Gary,
I use Andale, but during a period when it was down, I gave Auctiva a try for

free.

I did find Auctiva to be relatively easy to pick up and consider it a good
alternative. They do have a free gallery feature showing all your auctions in

Auctiva gallery picks up my Andale auctions!

I've been enjoying the remake thread going around now and had a thought
about something similar last night. I was watching JERRY MAGUIRE on
cable and remembered how great and refreshing it was to see a new
actress on the screen when it first came out. Renee Zellwegger was
smart, pretty, sweet, and and a brand new face on the Hollywood scene.
She held her own with Tom Cruise and really made the movie work in ways
that another more familiar actress wouldn't have been able to achieve.
This is one of the few times when a new personality came along recently
that really lit up the screen. For those of you who yawn at the
thought of another vehicle with Ben Affleck or Tom Cruise or Charlize
Theron or Julia Roberts or Cameron Diaz -- can you think of other times
when a new face has come along and really improved a film or the movie
industry in general -- out of the blue?

Hi all,
As a reluctant seller using paypal, I ask my customers to logon directly to
paypal and to enter my id. I don't allow them to pay directly from ebay, as I
want them to wait for my own billing and don't want ebay's hooks in my
business any more than necessary. Recently, I had 2 reports of problems doing
the
above after an uneventful year of accepting paypal payments.

One had to pay separately for the item and the mailing fee. Today a buyer of
three items, had to pay separately for each item and again for the mailing
fee. I believe that the problem stems from identifying the payment as an ebay
sale. If they Identify it as a non-ebay sale, I think they can make one lump
sum payment. Can anyone shed any light on this problem?

[MOPO] mopo: re Pulp Fiction advance

2006-01-29 Thread Michael Wong
Hi modern poster collectors,
I usually buy older posters, but found a Pulp Fiction advance one-sheet at a
sale. It is not the one with the Lucky Strike pack. Can anyone out there
tell me about the variations in PF advance os and how to tell if it is
authentic.
This poster was one of about a dozen other os, which I was pretty sure were
original.
Thanks, Michael, Cinecityposters.

Re: [MOPO] Karloff film festival at Film Forum In New York City

2006-01-27 Thread Michael Wong
Hi all,
For you Karloff fans, no South of the Border lobbies, but I do have vintage
8x10 bw British stills from 5 of the titles showing at the Film Forum: Bride
of Frankenstein, The Raven, The Black Cat, The Old Dark House and The Lost
Patrol.

Wish I was in NYC for these screenings. Aside from a noir festival in San
Francisco, which was too far and too hard to park for me more than once,
pickin's been slim here in the cities by the bay. I've been attending the Weird
America documentary series at Pacific Film Archive. Last week Derailroaded
about
Wild Man Fischer and his adventures with Zappa and Danger Will Robinson. This
week La Lucha: The Struggle which climaxed in a performance called La Lucha
Va Voom: a low rent Santo vs. The Pussycat Dolls.

Any takers on the photos? Michael, Cinecityposters

Hi MOPO,
How about a poster question!

Any advice on mailing a 40x60? I'm planning to get a 48 long piece of 6
circumference PVC pipe and cutting end caps from cardboard and taping the hell
out of the package with strapping tape.

Re: [MOPO] vinyl poster pockets

2006-01-18 Thread Michael Wong
Hi,
I've had some experience with posters left on boards inside os sized bags.
The Cinema Shop in SF used to have stacks of them lined up against their walls,
so many that you couldn't reach the back ones when standing at the front of a
stack. I assume that those posters had been in the bags since time
immemorial. Channing can confirm all this. Over the years, I did buy some of
those
posters and never noticed any problem with the posters inside, although the bags
were cloudy with dust on the outside. After going thru the stacks, your
hands were filthy!

I also once bought a Some Like It Hot os home-packaged in some sort of clear
plastic covering. After a few years the covering yellowed, but the poster
inside was still clean and bright. Unfortunately, I thought the yellowing was
on
the poster and let it go too cheap, but then I had just picked up a stone
mint copy and the one that went had some dart holes in it.

Re: [MOPO] Hostel remake

2006-01-17 Thread Michael Wong
Happy New Year,
Isn't Hostel just Most Dangerous Game on steroids? This plot device has been
used many times including the version set in New Orleans starring Van Damme
directed by one of the Hong Kong action guys. It's only a movie, not a snuff
film! Why not get upset about a really subversive precode film like the
Karloff/Lugosi Black Cat (not that it bothered me)

[MOPO] Fwd: Pluto Si, Kong No

2005-12-27 Thread Michael Wong
Hi all,
For those of you jaded by the holidays and King Kong, you might try to see
Neil Jordan's Breakfast on Pluto. It mines some of the same territory as The
Crying Game, but also brought to mind Velvet Goldmine. It's set in Ireland the
year of Last Tango in Paris and features a lot of romantic Brit pop music from
that era: Van Morrison, Dusty Springfield, Harry Nilsson and wonderful star
turns from Jordan regulars Stephen Rea, Liam Neeson and Brendan Gleason.
Brian Ferry and Ian Hart are in there somewhere too. If a film with
transsexuals,
pop music and IRA bombings is to your taste, then go Breakfast should be your
cup of tea.
Michael, Cinecityposters, taking a day off from moving!

[MOPO] Fwd: [MOPO] Goodbye Richard

2005-12-10 Thread Michael Wong
Hi MOPO,
My sister made a movie (Bustin' Loose) with Richard Pryor and after he hit on
her and was turned down, they became friends. He encouraged her in her
career saying that it was really important for Third World actors and actresses
to
work hard at their craft and succeed.

For years he used to call her at Christmas and leave funny messages on her
machine. Somewhere I have an autograph inscribe to me from him. He was a
personal favorite of mine and probably my all time favorite comedian. First
Warren
Zevon and now Richard Pryor. Sigh.

[MOPO] MOPO] Foxing

2005-09-15 Thread Michael Wong
Hi MOPO,
Technically speaking, I believe foxing refers only to spotting on paper. A
close friend of mine was a general paper dealer and he used the term to
describe brown age spots on all kinds of paper ephemera. I suppose foxing
could also
be caused by mildew, but the two terms are not synonymous.
