RIP Donald Sutherland :(

He was a superb Canadian actor from the 1960s to the present. While he gave
wonderful performances in a number of movies, his main criteria for deciding to
take a role seemed to be how much he was paid, because he appeared in lots of
movies not worthy of his talents.

Some of his movies include: JFK, MASH (as Hawkeye Pierce), Ordinary People,
Dirty Dozen, Animal House, Don't Look Now, 1900, Cold Mountain, Kelly's Heroes,
and The Hunger Games series (as President Snow).

In 2015's "Forsaken", he played the father of his real life son, Kiefer
Sutherland, who is also a wonderful actor, and in many ways has followed in his
father's footsteps.

Hi Dave K. and Dave LI use Dave L.'s site all the time for reference
for many posters but especially Star Wars. More and more collectors are coming
into the
hobby specifically to collect Star Wars material and I get emails everyday from
clients who want me to have a look at something they are considering buying to
see if it has any semblance of being a fake.I often refer them to Dave's

Thanks David and Bruce!

A lot of that information I put up a long time ago. I can't remember all of it
and constantly use it as a reference.

And no offense, but I think that differentiating between them as "Printer
Tests" or "Printers Proofs" is just semantics. In my opinion, if they have
color bars on the side I refer to them as Proofs.

Don't know how many others are on Dave Lieberman's newsletter but I hadn't
visited his site in a long time and I went straight to his Star Wars section -
and I was floored by the wealth of information about almost every known poster
iteration of Star Wars - from concept to its celebrated inaugural year of 1977
- (theatrical and commercial) - in roughly chronological order. The section
includes detailed images and descriptions of known fakes, including personal
testimonials of oddball things he concedes he was initially fooled about like a
lot of us.

He also provides a detailed study of printer's proofs - which - while I've
never had the desire to collect nor own, is still interesting insofar there are
collectors who DO love and pay $$$ for them. He explains how they came to be,
their ubiquitous presence and the differences between PMS (pantone) vs. CMYK
proofs, which came first, etc. - and why it matters to some collectors and not
to others. Great stuff for SW completists.

Encourage anyone interested to venture over there and take a gander, not just
at the massive Star Wars section - but also other sections, including the one
where he re-lives the entire minty white insert and lobby card counterfeit saga
- from his own point of view as a gallery owner of many years in AZ. He
further provides in one section - a long list of titles and accompanying
formats he implicates as having been faked - in line with other dealers who've
said the same. He also sources the geographic locations of some suspect
dealers who - to this day - are still peddling these things as originals.

Between this, eMoviePoster, Learn About Movie Posters, Walter Reuben and others
- this is a storehouse of information grouped by category / genre that's
available right now - for free.

Best, David near San Diego, still the biggest fan of the never-faked (to date)
- and grossly underrated Star Wars half-sheet from 1977 with alternate Jung
art. Cinemasterpieces image below.

P.S. - The Chantrell art on the Style C is probably my true fav among the SW
one-sheets - were it not for the fakes and not even knowing until recently
about the "hair on Leia's back" as a marker on that style - sort of a "bookend"
to the style A repro. But I still think the alternate Jung landscape art on
the half-sheet is excellent and affordable - and after nearly 50 years - it
still puzzles me how unloved it is by so many. (Not the centerpiece of anyone's
SW collection that I know of.) I know it will never reach the heights of a
Casablanca of Oz half-sheet in my remaining lifetime - (which are admittedly
more rare) - but maybe future generations of Disney fans will. -d.

No surprise here: It’s time for my annual recognition of those 11 first-day
MoPo members: Mahtab Moayeri, Michael Danese, Rob Ellis, Donna Tschetter, Goh
Kai Shen, Evan Zweifel, George Nichol, Jeff Static (using AOL name Static555),
Cindy Nemeth-Johannes, Adam Ehrlich, and myself. Michael, Rob and Evan are
still here. I’ve tried to track down the other originals, but only managed to
connect with Mahtab (who no longer actively collects but still has occasional
flare-ups of interest in posters). Cindy sadly left us in 2008, but husband Jay
is still subscribed.

I’m truly amazed this little group has managed to survive this long. I was

Propstore Welcomes Grey Smith as
Director of US Poster Auctions
September 26, 2022 – Industry-leading Expert, Formerly with Heritage Auctions,
Brings 40+ Years
Experience Into Propstore to Build the Best in Poster Offerings!
Propstore, one of the world’s leading film and TV memorabilia companies,
announced that Grey
Smith, a noted industry expert, and lifelong collector is joining the company
to lead their United
States poster auction offerings. Smith was previously the founding consignment
director for the rare
poster division at Heritage Auctions.
"We are thrilled to have Grey join the Propstore team, given his extensive
industry experience and
track record of curating some of the most successful poster auctions in the
world,” Propstore CEO
Stephen Lane said. “Grey brings with him over 20 years of experience producing
auctions, including
more than 65 sales that included some of the most valuable posters ever sold.
Grey has a reputation
for consignor satisfaction, and we know he will drive Propstore’s Los
Angeles-based poster auction
program to new heights. We look forward to expanding on our offerings in this
exciting collectibles
category and growing into one of the premier destinations for poster collectors
and dealers.
Grey began collecting movie posters as a child and the thrill of finding the
rarest examples has never
left him. Throughout his youth, he was regularly buying, trading, and selling
some of the best pieces
in cinema history. When Smith completed college, he entered the film industry
and worked in
production for twenty years while continually searching for poster rarities
during his travels.
In 2001, wishing to have less time on the road away from his family, Smith
pivoted his hobby into a
career when he took a position at Heritage Auctions to produce and develop
their poster auction
program. He subsequently left Heritage in 2022.
“Grey’s knowledge of film and posters is encyclopedic, and his enthusiasm for
the field is incredible,”
stated Brandon Alinger, Propstore COO.
Grey Smith states: “I couldn’t be more excited than to join a team of great
professionals, who have a
fierce passion for the auction industry as well as a wonderful reputation for
their knowledge and
ethical handling of the best in motion picture props,” Smith says. “I look
forward to contributing at
Propstore with my intimate knowledge of auctions, posters, and movie history.
We are planning our
first major U.S. poster auction for early 2023.”
Propstore is accepting consignments for future poster auctions now. Contact

Re: [MOPO] The Minty Whites are getting expensive!

2022-08-24 Thread Susan Heim
Yes, all they all have a nice yellowed tint added. The site does now have 100%
positive feedback. I know a lot of my framing customers don't even know what
the minty whites are. They call for an insert frame and tell me they've got
Blade Runner or Jaws or Star Wars and, as a collector myself, I usually ask
where they
got it and suggest they google "minty white insert movie posters" before they
buy anything else. Way back when this whole thing started we all discussed at
the time how these minty whites would eventually blend into the real ones and
you would have to be real sharp to know the difference. But if you don't even
know they exist, you wouldn't even think to examine or question them. I have a
few of them that I marked reproduction on the back of and the paper isn't
as "minty white" anymore.

Re: [MOPO] Olivia Newton-John 1948-2022

Years ago, in my previous life, I worked on the film Xanadu. Olivia was a very
sweet girl at the time. Of course, I was more excited to work with Gene
Kelly, even if he was in his later years. I could squint and imagine him
dancing in Singin' In the Rain!! Olivia and her good friend Pat, had a little
store
in Los Angeles for a while called Koala Blue and we would occasionally go there
for some little thing and, occasionally she would be there.
Somewhere I still have my Koala Blue shirt. Sad news for such a bright

No question, “Grease” is the far better movie.

But as the years have gone by, the trainwreck that is “Xanadu” has developed
quite the fan base. The big production number at the end of “Xanadu” is still
fun to watch (ELO after all!), even if the rest of the movie may drag, and
drag, and drag. ?? Every now and then I pull it up on YouTube and it always
cheers me up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKSB2O2Shts

For some unexplainable cosmic reason, many bad (at time of release) movies get
better, or at least much more fun to watch (and develop a following) as they
age. “Can’t Stop the Music” with the Village People, Caitlan (Bruce) Jenner,
Valerie Perrine & Steve Guttenberg definitely falls into that category, as does
“Moment by Moment” with John Travolta and Lily Tomlin (a really unbelievable
story line and a really bad script!) Sometimes a bad—but fun— movie hits the
spot.

Any other nominations for the Bad/But Good category?

of the show. I was the geek kid that memorized credits on tv shows and films.
One time I got up the nerve to ask him if he was a writer
for the show and he said yes. Of course, now I can't remember who it was, but
I think it was either Joe Connelly or Bob Mosher. I'm gettin' old too!

One day about 15 years ago a man walked into my framing gallery in L.A. with
some items to frame. He looked familiar to me but I couldn't place him
until I was writing up the invoice and he said his name was Frank Bank. There
was Lumpy Rutherford right there in my shop. He became a good
customer over a few years and a really nice man. He passed away in 2013. Sad
to hear the news of Tony Dow.he was such a cutie on the show!!

I hear ya Jeff.however, just a note, you can cut your tubes down to
just under 30" and it's only $4 more for the tube. I cut mine to 29 ½" which
still
leaves room for a one sheet, with padding on both ends and the end
caps.it's a pain but it saves some money.

I think they probably just show promoted listings from sellers who have chosen
to pay extra commission to have their listings given priority. I have found
that those listings appear at the top of searches and often have much higher

Re: [MOPO] Interesting.

2022-04-18 Thread Susan Heim
Boy if you were watching Bruce's auction yesterday, there are definitely
certain titles that don't seem to be slowing down in value growth. I sold my
Pinocchio one sheet
a few years back for $6500, a good price at the time. Yesterday, it went for
close to $11,000 and those Marx Brothers cards went for a bundle. I was amazed
at
some of the prices Bruce's auction realized..a very good job with a good
variety of material. I had many customers who called me this morning to order
frames for what they had purchased.

I do an enormous amount of framing for the hobby and I have new collectors
coming into the hobby every week. A lot of them are young guys who
begin by collecting material from the 1970's and 1980's and pretty soon start
collecting material from the 1940's, 50's and 60's.and they have a lot of
disposable income.

So, I think the poster hobby is still pretty strong. The example of the
Forbidden Planet one sheet going for $8700+ yesterday is not unusual as that
poster
fluctuates around all the time. Remember, one sold at Heritage just a few
months ago in November for $15,000. I sold my own copy for $12,000 last year.

So, while we may be losing collectors in our hobby due to age or switching to
other collectables, we've got a lot of new collectors coming into the hobby
with a lot of money to spend and big theater rooms to display everything.

Many of the other collectibles have dramatically risen in value due to
third-party slabbing and grading, as you mention, which has led to tremendous
competition. Competition to complete runs in VF condition as with what has
happened in coins, ball cards, and especially comics. And I suggest the
staggering prices in comic art are an off-shoot of the comic book explosion.
Yet, when an attempt was made to slab lobbies, MWC, which look fabulous, it was
generally pooh-poohed by the hobby.
I fear that posters may never explode as they are and never have been a revered
part of one's childhood like so many other collectibles are as they were made
to be collected. Posters were not. One just has to love having them and owning
them, regardless of the investment value. Why I always say, buy what you love;
then if you sell for a loss, you have had the pride of owning it.
I have always worked to get the posters seen, as by seeing them, especially in
person, one can see the magnificent beauty of the artwork.
This hobby seems to be the best-kept secret of all collectibles!

Hi Dave,
I am stupid right along with you..until Helmet questioned "why are you
using a 32" tube for a 24" poster", it didn't even dawn on me to cut the tube
down.
I do cut my 32" tubes in half all the time for inserts which still gives me a
little room for end padding. I just use a hand sawno power saw needed.
I am going to cut my tube to just under 30" because even if it's 1/8" over 30"
they are going to charge you the additional $15 surcharge.

Hi Helmut -

The short answer to your question is I am STUPID. I used a standard 32 long
tube typical for 27 inch wide one-sheets to leave a 2 1/2 inch buffer on both
ends - hence my 32 inch tube left a 4 1/2 inch buffer on both ends for a 23
inch wide A1 poster.

The long answer to your question is:
1. I am stupid.
2. I didn't have shorter shipping tubes to accommodate an A1 23 inch wide
poster other than for a few 14 inch wide inserts.
3. I knew about UPS and USPS rules for tubes - but I didn't know that eBay's
self-touted overseas shipping service, "eBay International Delivery" has a 27
inch long maximum to access cheaper contracted rates with DHL, Royal Mail, etc.
4. Moving forward, shipping one-sheets will require tubes greater than 27
inches long - but under 32 inches, which means using a power saw I guess
because I don't plan future bulk buys of shorter Yazoo tubes.
5. Shipping posters overseas isn't for sissies nor for ignoramuses like me.

David,

no offense, but why ship a poster that is only 23" long in a 32" tube???

Since the Covid mess started, pretty much all of my US shipments (which are not
too many anymore) go with UPS or DHL Express. Both companies bill by volume
weight, and extra size costs serious money. So I always try to keep the
packaging as small as possible.

2022-04-15 Thread Susan Heim
Hey Dave,
I hear your pain.so, I ship a lot of tubes and I wasn't notified that in
January UPS changed the fees for shipping a tube. I have cases of 32x3x3
tubes. So, I got
hit with $15 additional fees on my UPS invoice for all the tubes I shipped in
January and February. I wasn't notified of this until the beginning of March.
When
I typed in the information for the UPS label the price they gave me did not
include the $15 surcharge and that is the only reason I was able to get them to
reverse those charges. But from that March date on, I'm on notice of the new
surcharge and I have not used UPS but rather the post office. Now, as of last
week, the post office has instituted the $15 surcharge on that tube...Fedex
instituted the additional $15 charge on that tube last year and I guess
everyone else
is just following along...I have so many ebay auctions set up that I can't
really change my shipping and add
$15 to it or it makes the shipping look incredibly high to a buying a
customer.

So, Helmut's response to your post made the light go off in my head.I
will just have to cut my tubes down to under 30". Since most of what I'm
shipping
in tubes are rolled one sheets, they are only 27" wide, so even if I cut the
tube down to 28" or 29", I am under that 30" mark and it will only be $4 more
for additional handling as tubes between 22" and 30" have a $4 additional
handling charge. While it's a hassle to cut down the tube, better $4 than $15.

To be honest, I don't really see how handling a tube is different than
handling a box, but they will get you anyway they can. I talked to my rep at
Fedex
and they said it's because so many tubes roll off the conveyor belt they move
along on and guys are having to go over and pick them up and that's why
they added the $15 cost...amazing.

Subject: [MOPO] WHOOP-DI-DOO - I netted just $10.69 from a $50 eBay sale of my
R2018 Louise Brooks poster.

Three days after posting this on MoPo - My Louise Brooks poster (see preceding
email below) - sold for $50 yesterday. I knew about the USPS and UPS
surcharges for poster tubes - but for some stupid reason - I thought eBay - for
those of us who aren't part of its global shipping program - are availed to
access discounted shipping rates for non-dealers under what's called "eBay
International Delivery" - whereby eBay provides point-to-point service
including dealing with customs, etc. - before handing items off to each
country's contracted delivery service. eBay International Delivery provides
full tracking options.

After a UK buyer won the poster for $50 - (plus a "displayed" eBay
International Delivery rate of $38 to the UK + $17.60 VAT, etc. = a whopping
$105.60) - for a poster shipped in a 32x3x3 tube - I was shocked to learn after
I packed the thing - that eBay International Delivery - NOW prevents shipping
items longer than 27 inches in length. It warned of severe penalties, e.g.,
higher tack-on costs - for shippers breaking its new dimension and weight rules.

I was thus forced to purchase USPS Priority International Mail - at a cost of
$67.17. Higher than the "retail" cost of the $50 poster itself.

Of course I still honored the deal - because it's not the buyer's fault when a
seller incurs higher than expected shipping costs. He paid $38 for shipping
whie my actual shipping for Priority Mail International I was forced to use -
was $67.17 - which meant I absorbed the $29.17 difference between my $67.17
and his $38 contribution. Thus - after paying seller fees of $10.14 on a $50
poster + the $29.17 difference for shipping = this poster just netted me only
$10.69.

I became obsessed with eBay's ultra-complicated / Byzantine fee structure I
here's what I found after my mishap:

TOTAL PAID BY BUYER:
Louise Brooks Poster $ 50.00
Buyer Paid Shipping $ 38.00
VAT* $ 17.60

TOTAL PAID BY BUYER: $105.60

Beginning of the year both Fedex and UPS are now charging $15 more for a tube

Can global shipping get any more expensive and complicated. Scratch this
destination off the list.

There are important updates to how you sell goods to German customers on eBay.

Starting on July 1, 2022, it is a legal requirement for sellers of commercial
goods to Germans to have a valid Lucid-IdNr (packaging license) connected to
their eBay account.

As part of your Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), you are obligated to
follow these regulations set by the German Packaging Act (VerpackG). These
regulations focus on sustainability and are designed to prevent and manage
waste.

To comply with these changes, you’ll need to license your packaging with a dual
system and register with the LUCID packaging register.

How to license your packaging
We have partnered with Lizenzero, a company that offers a straightforward way
to license your packaging digitally using the Interseroh+ system. Please visit
their website and contact their team if you have any questions or need guidance.
Visit Lizenzero

How to register your packaging with LUCID

Firstly, you’ll need to provide the Central Agency Packaging Register with:
Your company name, address and contact details
Your VAT / Tax ID
A declaration that your packaging is licensed with a dual system

You will then receive your EPR number. Enter this along with the amount of
packaging you are using when you open an account with a dual system. Our
partner Lizenzero lets you open an account without the number, but it should be
provided as soon as possible.

Please be sure to take the necessary steps outlined above by the deadline of
July 1, 2022, or else we will be legally required to restrict your selling
privileges for the German market.

February 24, 1995: The first MoPo message was posted via the American
University listserv.

MoPo turns 27 today—a remarkable feat for an old-school e-mail based discussion
forum. As is my tradition, a salute to those 11 first-day MoPo members: Mahtab
Moayeri, Michael Danese, Rob Ellis, Donna Tschetter, Goh Kai Shen, Evan
Zweifel, George Nichol, Jeff Static (using AOL name Static555), Cindy
Nemeth-Johannes, Adam Ehrlich, and myself. Michael, Rob and Evan are still
subscribed.

Poster collecting has changed dramatically over the past 27 years. While the
Internet allowed MoPo to exist, it also decimated the old standbys of the
hobby. Gone are all the paper periodicals like Movie Collector’s World, The Big
Reel, Collecting Hollywood and Autograph Collector. Gone are the printed price
guides like John Kisch’s Poster Price Almanac and Jon Warren’s Movie Poster
Prices. Gone are many of the in-person conventions like the Syracuse Cinefest
and the Fall Cinesation in Massillon, OH. The Columbus Cinevent hosted it’s
53rd and final show in October, but will morph into the Columbus Moving Picture
Show this May “under new management” as they say. Buying movie memorabilia
changed dramatically, too. No more waiting for those massive (sometimes
handwritten) lists of available items in MCW ads or the next Hershenson sale
flyer with its nail-biting ordering procedure—will my call get through before
what I want is sold? And how many “other” poster discussion groups have come
and gone? Remember Movie Poster Forum, Movie Poster Chat or Movie Poster Talk?
And for you long-time MoPo’ers who could forget the notorious Style-B? All
gone.

The old MoPo FAQ, composed in the early days of our group, is now just an
archive of what was.

No matter, MoPo is a survivor and keeps chugging along. We’ll continue on until
there’s nothing left to talk about, or an auction to promote. ?? Or until
American University turns off the listserv!

Thanks to you all,

Scott

Re: [MOPO] shipping linenbacked six sheets

2022-01-28 Thread Susan Heim
Like Greg, I use pvc pipes to ship not only oversize posters, including six
sheets, but I ship unassembled 3 sheet frames to customers all over the country
and that tube
is usually at least 85"+ long. I buy the tubes at Lowes or Home Depot. They
sell them in the plumbing department and they come in 3" wide mouths or 4"
wide mouths
and cost about $10. You can even buy end caps for a couple of dollars. I make
my own end caps out of cardboard and secure those to the ends of the tube with
gaffers tape. Those same tubes are great for shipping all sizes of posters
but also for storing your own posters. Many of my framing customers have told
me they
have stored their posters in cardboard tubes for years and when they take them
out, they notice they are a bit brittle and the acid from the cardboard tube has
yellowed their poster. I buy the 10 foot pvc pipes and cut them in (4) equal
30" tubes, wipe out the center of the tube and store my posters in those tubes.
I put
a piece of paper on the outside of the tube so I know the contents and they
work great.that's the scoop. Also, the main shipping on one of those 85"+
tubes costs
me about $30-$35. If you have a poster inside, obviously you would add
insurance and a signature request for delivery which adds to the overall cost.

Mr. Martin,

I use the PVC pipes you're taking about to ship linenbacked postersor ,
actually, non-linenbacked sizes like half sheets and some one sheets...and they
are A-bomb proof. No bitchy customers screaming about a 1/4" dent. However, I
was not aware of the 4" Yazoo caps. I usually cobbled together a sturdy tube
end using a round piece of cardboard, clear packing tape (LOTS of it for
waterproofing) and brown packing tape as the finishing touch. I'm going to the
Yazoo web site today. Thanks, Tom.

3 quick stories:

* Ever get embarrassed by a movie critics love? Oliver Stone's Natural Born
Killers was that film. Critics lost their loads praising it - with Ebert
calling it, "some kind of masterpiece" - as if he HAD to like it. Ebert was a
"people's critic," so I trusted him. It was awful. Afterwards, my wife asked,
"Why would you pick a movie like this?" Should've taken that money and pigged
out at Jack in the Box. Since then, I've never paid to see an Oliver Stone
diatribe - and - I now go ALONE to screen pictures which get nominated for a
lot of awards but have "trouble" written all over them. (Every awards season
things get worse - with pics getting nominated that few will PAY to see.)

* The only time I fell asleep in a theater was while watching Lord of the Rings
- Return of the King. It's a film people said you HAD to see but I could never
get into Tolkien, and you know, fans say it's "literary" in a way "Star Wars"
is not. I tried but couldn't make it. I drowsily left and the box office gave
me a pass to return later. When it won 11 Oscars, tying Ben Hur and Titanic -
I went back and hung tough, but I kept looking at my watch. Peter Jackson's
Beatles "Get Back" movie was better, but I saw that in chunks like everyone
else so its duration wasn't felt.

* The only time I went with a GROUP to the movies - and one of us fell asleep
for HOURS - was during DOUBLE-BILL of "Marooned" with "2001: A Space Odyssey."
My brother was knocked out by boredom so we pranked him while he was asleep.
Took an empty tub of popcorn and put it on his head - and then put an empty
soft drink cup on top of that. He looked like a member of Devo in the dark.
As an added touch, we rolled foil from Hostess Ding Dong wrappers and inserted
two - one for each nostril. The dude NEVER woke up and we laughed so hard in a
way that no sound was coming out. This went on forever. The hijinks were over
when an "usher" - (yeah they really existed back in the day) - came by with his
flashlight and said, "Hey, you punks knock it off or I'm gonna kick you out."
Only then did my brother stir from his hibernation - and all of his "gear" fell
to the floor. We were in stitches. But it gets better. He didn't realize he
still had foil wrappers in his nose - and we didn't tell him, hence the
paroxysms continued a bit longer. Good times. -d.

That's funny Scott. The first time I saw Fantasia was in college in about
1974. I fell asleep about 15 minutes in. I kept waking up every 20 minutes or
so and tried desperately
to keep my eyes open but to no avail. My best friend, who was my college
roommate was a huge Disney fan and went on to be a Disney Imagineering Designer
for 30 years and
just retired. She still teases me about falling asleep during Fantasia as she
considers it sacrelegious. I have to admit that the same thing happened to me
for Star Wars. I went
to the opening at Grauman's Chinese theater on Hollywood Blvd. We waited in
line for hours. We finally got to the ticket booth and they had just sold the
last ticket and the next
showing was at like 4:00 in the morning. So, we sat down on the sidewalk. A
few minutes later a couple came up to us and asked if we wanted to buy two
tickets as they had bought
two extras for their friends that never showed up. We jumped for joy went into
the theater and got seated. The movie started and that beautiful John Williams
music began and in
the scene where Luke is flying the ship and there is no dialogue, I was
gone. Now, I love Star Wars and have since seen it many times.but I
totally get it on Fantasia.

Re: [MOPO] Kay Francis

2022-01-10 Thread Susan Heim
I had only seen a few Kay Francis movies over the years but really discovered
her work when TCM use to show films from the 1930's in the early morning hours.
 As I would
get up to get dressed for work, I would turn on TCM and there would be a film
with Kay Francis. I became much more knowledgeable of her film career through
Nathalie,
who collects material on her. She had become one of my favorite 1930's
actresses. Such a classic face and a really good actress. I watching the
collection of her films that
TCM is offering. Tonight was One Way Passage and I hadn't seen it before but
certainly understand why it was such a huge hit to depression era audiences.

My name is Fontaine Ayala. Some of you might remember me – I did linenbacking
back in the day from 2000 to 2010, and I helped run Capitol Posters and
Restoration with my dad, Tom Hammond.

I took some time off from the poster world to concentrate on my other business,
architectural renderings, but I have discovered that I truly miss working on
posters. I miss the physicality of the work and the satisfaction of bringing
something back to life. I also miss all of the relationships I built on an
international scale. I worked for some pretty awesome people in this
business!!!

If anyone is interested in having some work done, I’m going to start off with
my old prices - $75 for mounting (this includes cleaning/stain removal) and
$25/hr for tape removal and in-painting. Unfortunately, I do not have any
before and after pics since my old computer crashed, but I can supply you with
references if necessary. I believe in high quality work done at a fair price
in a timely turnaround. I am almost always available and return my voicemails
quickly.

If you would like to try me out, we can work out some kind of discount for your
first order. Feel free to contact me directly at fonta...@fontainebydesign.com

[MOPO] Looking for Posters - Need Help

2021-09-27 Thread Susan Heim
Hello everyone,
I am currently looking for the following posters:

Clockwork Orange 24x82 banner
Man From God's Country 1958
Mystery Science Theater, 3000, the Movie 1996

On the Clockwork Orange, that is the only size I am looking for. On the other
two, I would also be interested in other sizes such as inserts, half sheets,
lobby cards, etc. As
always, thanks in advance for your time.

Re: [MOPO] ebay Payments

2021-07-28 Thread Susan Heim
That's been happening for most ebay sellers in the U.S. since last August.
Ebay changed their system and in order to sell on ebay you had to become part of
their managed payment program. They are instituting it all over the world,
just gradually. For instance, I had a buyer from Ireleand where they don't have
that system yet and they had to actually log onto the U.S. ebay to pay for the
itemthe fees were increased and now the percentage you pay is whatever
percent you have on your account for the item price, it's sale tax and it's
shipping. There is also now an international fee if someone outside the U.S.
purchases
your item.that's the scoop.

Hi Bruce

It’s hard to understand how USPS could damage your packages because you
certainly pack well. I am finding USPS International Mail is incredibly slow at
the moment and the tracking often shows packages going via Japan and even
London. I now ask for UPS for shipping. They take around a week from the US to
Australia and are very reliable (so far).

The U.S. Post Office has gone DRASTICALLY downhill the past few years, and that
slide is accelerating dramatically. Packages sent Priority Mail now routinely
take a week or more to arrive in the U.S., as opposed to 2 to 5 days a couple
of years ago.

Packages sent outside the U.S. fare far worse. They often take a month or more,
and usually there is no tracking during that time (or sometimes false tracking
of places it has never been).

But worst of all is the DAMAGE. Anyone who has ordered from my company,
eMoviePoster.com, KNOWS we use the strongest tubes of anyone. Until last year,
we only had two or three damaged packages each year, out of the 25,000 or so we
send each year!

In the past year, we have had around ten times that. It still is a VERY tiny
percentage of the total we send (around one tenth of one percent), which is a
tribute to how strong our tubes and boxes are), but when the rate goes up ten
times after 30 years of no change, you KNOW they are doing something VERY wrong
in how they handle tubes and packages.

We sent a tube back in March. The customer received it crushed, and worse yet,
the mailman dropped the crushed tube off at the customer's front door, rang the
doorbell and left.

He later that day received an email saying that he had accepted the tube and
had signed for it, and that was a lie (the customer has the ring video doorbell
that proves otherwise).

He sent us pictures of the crushed tube, and we filed the claim. First the Post
Office said we needed pictures of the damage, and we sent pictures of the tube
and damaged posters.

Next they said we needed to prove the customer had paid what we said. We sent a
copy of the invoice, and they said that was not sufficient. We sent the a copy
of his payment, and they accepted that.

But now they sent a new letter stating they looked at our images of the crushed
tube and have determined we did not use a strong enough tube, so they are
denying our claim, and suggest we double tube all orders in the future! 

I KNOW we used a tube stronger than 99% of the tubes anyone else does, and that
they simply never want to pay any insurance claims, even though they love
taking the insurance money.

So the Post Office crushed a super-strong tube, lied about the customer signing
for it, delayed my rightful claim for months, and then denied it and told me to
use double tubes!

I am thinking a FAR better suggestion is that we switch ALL our business

An unopened copy of Nintendo’s Super Mario 64 has sold at auction for $1.56
million.
Heritage Auctions in Dallas said that the 1996 game sold Sunday, breaking its
previous record price for the sale of a single video game. Two days prior, The
Legend of Zelda sold for 870,000.

Now that I have been working for an auction house for 8 years, I always admire
collectors and the diversity it can represent: Historic letters by the
founding fathers, rare first edition books, Coca-Cola, baseball cards, NASA
ephemera, photography, Hollywood... all a reflection of America (and also the
worlds) past. So much a reflection of the times, footnotes that reflect most
of the time, genius, artistry……greatness. And these collectors are actually
curators of history keeping their possessions with great care to pass onto
another generation who with education and passion will continue carrying the
baton of who we were, how far we’ve come and the importance these artifacts
represent

But !@!!$@$%!! **!^#&^ video games?Dammit, I got old fast.

Sue is 100% correct.

"The percentage of what they take went up a bit and they take their fees on the
item price + sales tax + shipping."

Besides the above, just think about all of the additional $$ from interest
which they're now making, holding your money hostage for days before slowly
dishing it out to you.

I'm just waiting for their next money grab.

THE EBAY BANK!! Where you will be forced to open an account and all of your
money from sales will now be deposited there, where you can later transfer it
to your own bank. Or just keep it there as many will do, so ebay can use it
any way they wish and/or gather even more interest.

Hi all,

As life rolls on, I have decided to start giving away / throwing away /
consigning / selling on eeekbay whatever I own ... that my wife and daughter
are not interested in collecting / keeping, (which just happens to be damn near
everything).

I looked into the transaction details on some items previously sold. I noticed
what appears to be some accounting errors, so natch, I contacted and found out:

When a buyer pays for an item sold on eeekbay, they are (most likely) charged a
local tax to be paid by the buyer, and that tax is also added to the final
value of the item, and then the seller is charged whatever percentage fee on
the added final value fee.

Creative accounting?

New math?

Thoughts?

New math?

Thoughts?

Re: [MOPO] Cinerama Dome to close permanently

2021-04-14 Thread Susan Heim
I would have loved to see How the West Was Won. It's one of my favorite movie.
I just watched it the other day on TCM.. I have a customer, Tom March from
Canada, that is part of a HWWW group that did a video years ago tracing all the
locations that the movie was filmed in. Showing the current location next to
the original filmed location. A lot of it out in Convict Lake and Lone Pine.
Here is the youtube video of that film he made. It's a wonderful watch.

Great post Sue. When I heard the news I tweeted the following:

Mega Bummer. The Dome was my favorite place to watch movies.Few years ago saw
How The West Was Won in three strip true Cinerama new perfet print of The
Searchers.

-
After the HWWW screening the audience was invited up to the projection room.
Only a few of us took advantage of the invitation and the visit was a real
treat. We got to talk to the projectionists as they went over their clean
machines and I got to see the 4th "projector" in the booth: the large unique
device that ran the sound on its own dedicated track. The God Of Cinema ( who
lives in Hollywood ) will save this iconic movie palace dedicated to the
technique of showing films. rudy

Hi Helmut,
Yes, not sure what all has happened but my packaged to Europe have had major
problem. I sent a package to the Ukraine in November, paid for International
express, was suppose to be delivered in 3 days. It made it to London
and now no one has any update on it. Unfortunately, it didn't make it in time
for a Christmas gift. I just sent a package to Switzerland and it showed up a
week after it's stated delivery date (thank goodness, though, it did arrive).
It's now a situation where when I get an order going to Europe, I cross my
fingers and worry until it gets there.

Subject: [MOPO] Thank you, Great Britain!

If any MoPo members from the UK voted for the Brexit: A WARM-HEARTED thank you
from Berlin! What a darn mess you got us all in.

Not only has shipping to the UK become a ridiculous nightmare: UPS Express used
to deliver the next day, when Corona hit, they took an extra day, thanks to the
Brexit, my last package took 12 days for delivery, owed to 'Brexit delays'. And
it's safe to assume that we have not seen the of this downward spiral for a
long time.

Even worse: That Brexit sh*t is now affecting my DHL Express imports from the
US. The normal runtime from the US to Germany used to be two days, and more
often than not, my packages would clear customs before they even landed in
Germany.

I have a shipment sitting at Leipzig Airport right now, and I just learne, that
DHL currently takes two to six weeks to file a customs import declaration,
thanks to the Brexit. Like everybody else, DHL has been hit by the pandemic,
but they could manage that quite well. Now, they are wasting countless hours
with filing tons and tons of apparently highly complicated import declarations
for packages from the UK.

Subject: [MOPO] So We Begin Our 26th Year...

Another February 24th arrives and MoPo is another year older. As each year
passes, I’m always grateful (and admittedly a tad bit surprised) that this
little group continues to chug along.

One year ago today, as we celebrated MoPo’s Silver Anniversary, who could have
imagined what was ahead and how awful 2020 would turn out to be. I don’t know
about all of you, but I think I aged 5 years over the last 365 days.

26 years ago today the first MoPo message was sent via American University’s
listserv to 11 subscribers. As is my tradition, hats off to those originals:
Mahtab Moayeri, Michael Danese, Rob Ellis, Donna Tschetter, Goh Kai Shen, Evan
Zweifel, George Nichol, Jeff Static (using AOL name Static555), Cindy
Nemeth-Johannes, Adam Ehrlich, and myself. Michael, Rob and Evan are still
members—Thanks for hanging in there!

And a big THANK YOU to EVERYONE for keeping MoPo alive! Here’s to a brighter
2021!

Scott

Good question Stan

I would also be interested to hear how other sellers are dealing with the new
customs requirements throughout Europe as well as the UK.

Hi MOPO,

Has anyone actually been able to get a UK VAT number in order to be able to
ship under 135 GBP orders to the UK?

Thanks,

Stan

Subject: [MOPO] Welcome From fffmovieposters

Hello to all MoPo readers and fans,

I am new to this forum, so this is my first message.

My name is Chris, and for the past 10+ years I have managed the site
fffmovieposters.com. We sold posters at multiple points of sale (eBay, Amazon,
and our Website).

Due to covid and other concerns, we ceased our business operations in 2020.
After lengthy discussions with the owner of the business, he has decided to
remain shut down.

My responsibility as the one remaining employee is to “empty” our 15,000 square
foot warehouse. I am offering for sale various items including shelving (every
kind you can imagine, from large industrial shelving over 10 feet high, to home
center type shelving typically 6 feet high, 4 feet wide, and 2 feet deep,
packaging materials, all new (cardboard boxes, cardboard shipping tubes,
oversize envelopes, padded envelopes, cardboard reinforcement “flats”, and
plastic poly bags by the case for poster sizes including window cards, half
sheets, inserts, lobby cards and stills. I’m also selling poly tubing by the
roll (suitable for rolled one sheets), and a poly cutter and sealer), office
equipment (desks, tables, chairs, etc.), computer equipment and monitors,
photography equipment, an industrial scanner, etc.

In addition to the above, I have more than 500 lightweight picture frames of
various sizes from still sized to three sheet and larger. Most of the frames
are one sheet sized, half sheet, insert, window card, and assorted sizes for
stills. All the frames are assembled, (no missing parts) with a white foam
board backing, a shatterproof clear plexiglass front, and the metal joints and
spring clips to hold everything in place. Most of these frame parts are made
up of half round satin black aluminum rails with a frame profile of 7/8 inch
wide when assembled. The lengths and widths are various according to the item
that was framed. Sue from Hollywood Poster Frames was our framer for most our
posters etc. over the years and she can attest to the fact that these frames
are of excellent quality.

I’m even selling a 20 foot-long, 8 foot-wide and 8’6” tall steel weatherproof
lockable shipping container. We used it as an indoor vault!

Complete lists are available to anyone interested in any of the items listed
for sale.

I look forward to corresponding here in the MoPo forum.

Chris

Wishing you all a very happy, healthy and safe New Year!

I would love to hear from anyone who has any Richard Dix RKO one sheets or
Wheeler and Woolsey material in their inventory. Curious to see what's out
there. Maybe we can make a deal.

May the coming year bring you many good things including the poster you've
always wanted!

Re: [MOPO] Ebay Managed Payments?

2020-12-03 Thread Susan Heim
Another point is that not all countries have been put on the managed payment
system. So, I had a customer in Ireland purchase an item and tried to pay for
it and kept getting an error message. I called ebay and they explained that
Ireland is not yet part of the managed payment plan situation. So, in order
for the customer to pay for the item, she had to log in to ebay.com (U.S.
counterpart) and go through hoops to pay for the item. I've had a few others
that
didn't want to deal with it and just cancelled the order. The rep told me that
ebay is systamatically implementing the program in all countries, but it may
take at least year for that to be accomplished. The other thing that is new
in this system is they now charge an international fee for anything sold
outside the U.S. if you are a U.S. Ebay seller.

Subject: Re: [MOPO] Ebay Managed Payments?

Ebay Managed Payments is just another additional power grab by Ebay to
eventually take total control over seller accounts and to make a lot more money.

Originally, they said it would make it so much easier for sellers and it would
also be less expensive.

They've cut out PayPal where a seller would have immediate access to their
money.

So now, since sellers don't have immediate access to their money as they use to
and have to sometimes wait many days in order to access their money, it's not
easier.

By holding onto seller's funds for days on end, ebay is making millions more on
that interest.

In addition, as Sue states, since they now charge fees to sellers on Sales Tax
paid by buyers, it's more expensive and sellers are making less.

I've actually found that I'm being charged more, even if they didn't charge a
fee on the Sales Tax.

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if they cut out USPS, FedEx and UPS and
start their own mailing system where sellers are forced to ship through ebay.
