I thought most schools have a book roomisn't it called the media center?

I agree a classroom library is essential. Having books at hand and in
constant view is important for a student (especially if they have no books
at home).

We are just beginning to purchase a bookroom. We have mostly class sets of
novels at this time. We are working to convince middle school teachers about
the benefits of shared and guided reading. I do agree with Lori in the
benefits of surrounding students with a wealth of literature at a variety of
levels. Some of our LA classes have no literature, except their LA textbooks.

Literacies for All Sum

Re: [MOSAIC] grant writing

2008-09-06 Thread ljackson
Maybe it is about perspective. Mine: Impoverished rural school system,
geographic isolation, no public library, majority of schools-no school
library, students disenfranchised readers for whom traditionally shelved
books are like offering the most horrific speller a dictionary--a tool that
can overwhelm rather than support (compounded with library aides who may or
may not deeply know readers and their libraries, and are not in a position
to guide, entice), very few books in most homes, community literacy rates
low.

I don't see classroom libraries as optional. I see them as critical. A need
that ranks up there with food, shelter and clothing, if we want to break the
cycle of low literacy skills. Bookrooms are a terrific asset for
instructional reading, but kids learn to love reading when books that appeal
are available to them and they have time to follow their passions through
pages and pages and pages.

I agree that classroom libraries are best but if you have a lot f ew teachers
and money is an issue a bookroom can be a huge asset. Our teachers check out
sets of leveled texts to use in their guided reading lessons and the students
keep them in their book basket for several weeks some teachers will put student
desks in clusters based on their reading level and keep one basket on in the
center. The classroom libraries tend to be moe trade/picture books that they
can organize for author studies or by genre or theme. Teachers always spend
huge amounts of their own money on books. We also have a fabulous librarian
who wiill check out books from the public library.for us. I think she can have
up to 50 books out at a time. I'm just saying there are ways to get books in
kids hands without the huge investment. It takes years to builda classroom
lbrary

Sue,
Where are you? I am in Arkansas, and I just recently received a $3,000
grant from the Rockefeller Foundation and the Humanities Council. I learned
about the availability of the grant through a representative from the
Secretary of State. You might could check there to see if there are some
funds from your state that you may not have heard about. Over the past
couple of years, I have also received several grants through our school's
PTSA and our district's Education Foundation. Does your school have any
funds through these organization? I am a grant writing fool! It pays off!
I have probably gotten about 1,000 books for my classroom in the last two
years! Good Luck! Elisa

Subject: [MOSAIC] HELP! I need help with leveling picture books for
thestrategies

Hi. I'm writing a grant for picture books for the different
strategies. I'd like to have a decent amount of these books in my
classroom library so that the students may read them too. Do you
know what picture books would be appropriate for second graders to
read independently? I'm getting my list from the documents on the
tools page, and the recommendations from RWM.

Thanks for your help!

Shannon

[MOSAIC] grant writing

2008-09-05 Thread Villarrubia, Susan L
Our goal this year is to have 300 books in every Language Arts
classroom. We have almost all first year and lateral entry teachers, so
they have a very limited library at this time. Does anyone know of any
good grants or resources for reaching our goal? Sue
