I checked out both Eggert Lake and the spot on CR 121 this evening. There was
a Willet at Eggert lake along with the Greater White-fronted Geese Doug
reported. Also an Eared Grebe out in the middle of the lake mixed in with
scaup and Ruddy Ducks. The CR 121 spot had a number of both Yellowlegs with a
few Pectoral Sandpipers mixed in. I also had an American Bittern call briefly
from the west side of the St Thomas marsh a little before 9 PM.

[mou-net] Pope County Snowy Owls

2014-02-17 Thread Joel Claus
I came across two Snowy Owls in Pope county this afternoon. The first was a
very lightly barred individual on a power pole along Hwy 28 0.5 miles east of
where CR 33 goes north in NE Pope County. This is two miles south of where Ron
Erpelding, Herb Dingmann, and others have reported snowies in the last few
weeks so it might be one of those birds.

The second bird was on the south edge of the Glenwood Municipal airport. I had
a distant view of it perched on a power pole south of the airport from CR 22

[mou-net] Common Gallinules, Nicollet County

2013-07-27 Thread Joel Claus
This morning I played a Common Gallinule recording at the public access off CR

nearby cattails. It called several more times over the next 20 minutes. At
one point, another bird called further out in the marsh. I got only one very
brief look at the bird on the right side of the narrow channel that goes out
through the marsh from the access during the 30 minutes I was there. At least
3 Virginia Rails were also present.

Earlier, I came across a Grey Partridge crossing CR 4 .1 mile south of CR 15.

[mou-net] Red-Headed Woodpeckers A. Bittern Kanabec County

Also had an American Bittern in the marsh at Ivory 336th Ave.

Most unexpected was a meadowlark perched on the roof of the Knife Lake town
hall singing a Western Meadowlark song. Was not able to see the malar area

[mou-net] Norman County Sharp-tailed Grouse

2012-05-08 Thread Joel Claus
I found a Sharp-tailed Grouse dancing with Prairie Chickens on a Lek in Norman
County yesterday morning (5/7). This appears to be only the fourth county
record.

The Lek is located on CR 28, .2 miles east of the corner with CR 33 as you take
it north from CR 39. Note that the road is signed CR 124 where it joins CR 39
though all of my maps have it as CR 28.

The lek is on the south side of the road in a stubble field. There were 16
male Prairie Chickens and the Sharp-tail dancing and the lek is close enough to
the road for the birds to be easily viewed through a spotting scope.

[mou-net] Crow Wing County Tresspassing Incident

2012-02-05 Thread Joel Claus
Thought I should pass this on to the list serv although I haven't seen a post
about this spot. Word has spread the last few days about a spot in Crow Wing
County where Black-billed Magpies could be seen. The area in question is on
private land where a butcher has been dumping carcasses and offal. A number of
birders have visited the spot in the last few days. The word was that as long
as you asked permission at the shop (or knocked on the door of his house), the
owner was cool with birders going back into his field to look for the Magpies.
Everybody I talked to about the spot stressed that you had to go through his
yard and then well out into the field behind his house, so ASK PERMISSION FIRST.

Ron Erpelding and I stopped by this afternoon and spoke with the landowner. He
was very polite to us but told us that he was no longer allowing any birders on
his land. Apparently, late yesterday afternoon someone drove back across his
fields without asking. He said he called both the County Sheriff and the game
warden but whoever it was left before they arrived. He was angry that someone
thought they could just drive across his land without asking (Everyone I know
who went there walked out). He told us, Sorry guys but that was it, from now
on if anyone wants to look at birds here they have to do it from the highway.

Please folks, respect private property. This made all of us look bad.

[mou-net] Sibley County Moorhen, Cattle Egrets, Shorebirds

2010-07-18 Thread Joel Claus
I was able to refind the Moorhen on Sand Lake about 7:15 AM this morning. It
was in the NW corner of the lake close in to the cattails. I was at the Public
Access on the east side of the lake. I'm not sure that it would have been
visible from the road along the north side.

Two Cattle Egrets were present at the previously posted site on CR 13, 1/2 mile
N of CR12 a little before 8 AM along with lots of Pectoral Sandpipers, both
Yellowlegs, Least Sandpipers, and a single Dowitcher (presumably a Short-Billed
since I was in shorts). I found the same mix of shorebirds at Doug Kieser's
shorebird spot that Bill Marengo posted with the addition of one Baird's
Sandpiper.

I also tried for the McLeod County Moorhens without any luck.

[mou-net] Three-toed Woodpeckers

2010-02-16 Thread Joel Claus
Hello all,

I spent the weekend touring Koochiching and Lake of the Woods Counties.
Highlights were American Three-toed woodpeckers in both counties. In
Koochiching county, I had one 1.9 mile S on CR 13 from it's junction with CR1.
The Lake of the Woods bird was on the west side of Faunce Rd, 0.8 mile south
from the junction with the Bankton Trail.

Other weekend highlights:

Northern Goshawk - LOTW along the Rapid River Road at the Pepin Bridge

Northern Hawk Owl - 3 in Koochiching county, 2 along CR 86 (Sand Mark Rd) and 1
along Hwy 71 a few miles south of Big Falls. I also relocated the Cass County
Hawk Owl reported by Ben W along CR73 on Saturday.

Boreal Chickadees - 5 in Koochiching on the Tuomey Williams Rd maybe 1/4 mile N
from CR30.

Bohemian Waxwings - small flocks in the towns of Emily (Crow Wing County) on
Saturday, and Kelliher (Beltrami County) on Monday.

Red Crossbills were seen in several locations along Faunce Rd in LOTW and there
was a flock of White-wings in the vicinity of Norris Camp on Sunday. Pine
Grosbeaks were found in most of the towns in the area and were scattered
throughout Beltrami Island state forest as were Common Redpolls.

Unfortunately, my target bird was Spruce Grouse which were uncooperative as
usual. My thanks to Ted Dick of the MN DNR for some excellent suggestions on
birding spots in Koochiching and Lake of the Woods counties.

Re: [mou-net] ? on Caspians Tern at Purgatory creek

2009-09-21 Thread Joel Claus
Hello all,

I check Purgatory periodically and haven't noticed any attempted nesting on
Tern Island. The problem with Purgatory is that it functions as the Eden
Prairie municipal storm water holding basin which limits it's utility as
nesting habitat. Water levels in the wetland change dramatically after a good
rainfall and the island can disappear for days or even weeks at a time. It was
underwater for at least several days earlier this summer after we had a couple
of good downpours in August. I can't remember a recent year where the island
was above water for the entire summer.

I noted this AM that one of the Caspian Terns at Purgatory Creek this AM was
a juvenile with a yellow bill, white and gray speckled back, etc. While I was
there it did not fly (so have no idea if it can or not) and was fed by an
adult. I know many other birders are much more regular about checking this
 site than we are.

Did these bird nest here this year? If so, this is very interesting as there
are, I believe, only two previous nesting records for the state of Minnesota,
Cass and Mille Lacs Counties. The Mille Lacs record was on Lake Mille Lacs
(Hennepin Island I think I remember) and I presume that the Cass record was
on Leech Lake, although I am not sure of that.

Looking forward to any responses. Responses should be sent to the list as I
am sure that many others are as interested in the answer as we are.

[mou-net] Sibley Cty - Lazuli Bunting Not Found Today

2009-07-19 Thread Joel Claus

Seven birders spent several hours at Vale WMA this morning looking for the male
Lazuli Bunting without success. If anyone still wants to try, the road to turn
off of CR6 is 270th St. Keep following 270th until you climb out of the valley
of High Island Creek and look for the WMA parking lot on your right. Walk the
old road that goes north out of the parking lot till it ends and hang a left
into the woods on a trail. The trail goes down a steep hill and eventually
comes out in a brushy meadow that borders the creek. The bird was seen in this
area at 1 PM yesterday.

[mou-net] Red Crossbills - Benton County

2009-06-07 Thread Joel Claus

I spent most of the day birding in Benton County. The unexpected find of the
day was a flock of about a dozen Red Crossbills feeding in a stand of Red
Pines. The birds were in a piece of state forest land on the south side of CR
2 just east of Benton Beach County Park. There's a dirt track leading south of
CR 2 right across from where 5th Ave goes north. The crossbills were about a
100 yards in on the right hand side. Didn't figure to see these guys so far
south in June. Also in this vicinity was a Eastern Towhee, and further back
into the woods I had a nice look at a male Pine Warbler.

Also, one of the Gilman Sewage ponds has some exposed mud flats and there were
some lingering shorebirds present including White-rumped Sandpipers,
Semipalmated Sandpipers, Dunlin, Wilson's Phalarope, 2 Semipalmated Plovers,
and a Stilt Sandpiper. The Gilman ponds are 0.5 miles SW from Gilman on CR 3.

Golden Winged Warblers and a Mourning Warbler were present in Benlacs WMA north
of the parking area on 35th ST NE and there was a Scarlet Tanager in the woods
at Bibles WMA.

[mou-net] Nicollet Cty Blue Grosbeak still present

2009-06-06 Thread Joel Claus
I was able to relocate the Blue Grosbeak originally reported by Bob Dunlap at
11:30 AM this morning at the gravel pits on 506th in Nicollet County. The bird
was singing on the far side of the gravel pit from the road and then later flew
into the trees right along side the road. Also present were a pair of Belted
Kingfishers bringing small fish from the river to a burrow on the west side of
the pit and many Lark Sparrows.

[mou] Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Am. Golden-Plover - Nicollet Cty

2008-08-17 Thread Joel Claus

I visited the WMA off Hwy 111 in Nicollet County this afternoon and found a
single Buff-breasted Sandpiper and a single American Golden-Plover among 134
shorebirds in the second flooded field that Bob Dunlap posted about the other
day. Twelve species total at this location. Thanks to Bob for his posts on
this spot!

I also came across a covey of 16 Grey Partridge feeding in a recently mown
ditch along the east side Hwy 111 further north from the WMA. They were
approximately .4 mile south of where 400th St crosses Hwy 111.

The Gaylord sewage ponds held several hundred Franklin's Gulls but only a
handful of shorebirds when I stopped by.

[mou] Kentucky Warbler Refound in Louisville Swamp

2008-05-22 Thread Joel Claus
I was able to re-find the Kentucky Warbler reported by Art Braun about 7:30 PM
tonight. It was in the same general area. I came in by following the State
Corridor Trail to where it branches off and then followed the trail (North Rd I
think) that goes down to the creek and Jabs Farm. I found the Kentucky along
the left side of the trail to the farm maybe a 100 yards from where the State
trail branched off. It was very cooperative and perched in the open briefly
several times allowing me nice looks.

Thanks for posting this bird Art!

Also saw my first Brewster's warbler (1st generation adult male according to
Sibley) as well as a FOY Olive-sided Flycatcher.

[mou] Sibley County Red-necked Phalarope, Willet, R Turnstone

2008-05-18 Thread Joel Claus
I went by the Gaylord Sewage ponds this evening and found 12 species of
shorebirds present including 2 Red-necked phalaropes, 1 Willet, and 3 Ruddy
Turnstones. Others seen were:
Greater Yellowlegs - 15
Lesser Yellowlegs - 10
Dunlin - many
Short-billed Dowitcher - 2
Least Sandpiper - many
Semipalmated Sandpiper - 3
Wilson's Phalarope - many
Spotted Sandpiper - many
Killdeer

The ponds are just east of Hwy 22 on CR 67. There is a dirt track along the
outside of the fence along the western boundary that provides excellent viewing
in the evening. Most of the shorebirds were in the southernmost pond. The
Red-necked Phalaropes were in the NW corner of the southern pond.

[mou] Sibley Summer Tanager not re-found- Am Bittern

2008-05-04 Thread Joel Claus
I went down to Rush River this evening to try for the Summer Tanager reported
earlier today by Bob Dunlap and struck out. I ran into the Martins and Bob
Williams there and they had not seen the bird either. The area was pretty
quiet birdwise with the only highlights for me being a calling Barred Owl and a
FOY Grey Catbird.

On the way home I stopped at dusk at the Redhead WPA along Hwy 25 just across
from Lake Washington. There was an American Bittern calling in the marsh about
100 yards down the trail that starts at the gate of the parking area. I also
heard at least three woodcock calling and there were numerous snipe winnowing
overhead.

Hawk Owl, and the woodpeckers despite making several forays into the bogs where
they had been feeding (snow shoes are recommended, especially for crossing the

[mou] Savannah Sparrows - McLeod County

2007-12-09 Thread Joel Claus
I drove some of the back roads in McLeod county this morning looking for Snow
Buntings and instead came across two very late Savannah Sparrows. The birds
were on the road at the corner of Garden Ave and 217th St northeast of the town
of Silver Lake. I observed them from the window of my car at a distance of 15
feet for several minutes and had good looks at the finely streaked breasts,
yellow wash on the lore's, and light median crown stripe. When I phished at
them they flew into the trees of an adjacent farmstead. Perhaps there are
feeders there that they are frequenting.

I also saw a beautiful dark morph Rough-legged Hawk along Carver CR 30, 1/4

[mou] Black-headed Gull and other weekend birds

2007-10-15 Thread Joel Claus
I saw the Black-headed Gull at it's usual spot at the north end of Spirit Lake,
Iowa on Friday. After sitting along the road for two and a half hours I was
rewarded when it flew across the road into Minnesota about 3 PM.

Also of note, there is a stock pond on east side of Hwy 86 at 730th where a
large number of geese and blackbirds are congregating. Among them on Friday
afternoon was a flock of at least 12 Great-tailed Grackles at the edge of the
pond near the highway. I counted seven males and five females before the flock
flew with a few Common Grackles mixed in to give a nice size comparison.

Other birds of interest (at least for me) from this weekend:
2 Short-eared Owls flying over the east unit of Plover Prairie in Lac Qui Parle
county between 6:45 and 7 PM Saturday harassing a Northern Harrier.

Eurasian Collared Dove in Wheaton on Sunday. The bird was in a yard along Hwy
27 at the corner of 16th street.

Red-Breasted Nuthatches in Pipestone, Lac Qui Parle, Big Stone, and Wilkin
counties.

6 Snow Buntings along 200th street near the Rothsay WMA in Wilkin county on
Sunday.

A late Magnolia Warbler and a Winter Wren in an Aspen grove near Rothsay.

American Pipits and Harris Sparrows everywhere!

[mou] Buff-breasted Sandpipers - Purgatory Creek

2007-08-03 Thread Joel Claus

About 8:20 PM this evening I observed 3 Buff-breasted sandpipers at the
Purgatory creek wetlands in Eden Prairie. They were seen from the footbridge
and were on the east side of the wetlands. As Doug Keiser reported, there are
now extensive mudflats present and there is alot of habitat to check with
shorebirds scattered around all over. I saw nine species from the area of the
bridge in the short time I had before the light went along with a single
Black-crowned night heron mixed in with the pelicans, egrets, and blue herons
out in the center. I was able to pick out two distant phalaropes between my
vantage point and the blind but had to leave them at phalarope (sp) due to the
distance and the fading light - damm! If you're going to visit, come soon
because Purgatory creek will be a very smelly place in a few days due to all
the dying carp! See Doug Keiser's post for directions.

[mou] Late Post- Louisiana Waterthrush - Renville County

2007-05-16 Thread Joel Claus
This past Saturday I found a Louisiana Waterthrush at Beaver Falls County
Park in Renville county. The bird was along the creek between the bridge on
Cty 2 and the picnic area in the park. I had a nice look from a distance of
about thirty yards as it walked along the far bank for a minute or so before
it flew off. The bird had a prominent white supercilium that definitely
widened behind the eye. There was no hint of yellow wash on the underside
except for patch of light cinamon brown on the rear flank. My view was from
the side and I did not get a real good look at the throat. I believe two
birds were present judging from the call notes but the first one flew off
too quick for me to get a good look.

Sorry for the late post, I've been away from my computer for a few days.

[mou] Birding Today

2007-05-11 Thread Joel Claus
I birded Goodhue county this morning (Hok-si-La and Frontenac). The birding
was on the slow side and most warbler species (15) in found in ones or twos
except for Tennessee and Redstart which were numerous. Also lots of Great
Crested Flycatchers and Orioles. Only saw 74 species between the two sites.

Stopped by Lake Byllesby and 140th on the way home. Neither spot had much
for Shorebirds. Only saw a couple of distant Yellowlegs at Byllesby despite
lots of mudflats and 7 Spotted Sandpipers was it for 140th.

Highlight of the day was stopping by Diamond Lake this afternoon and finally
seeing the Neotropic Cormorant. It was still present when I left at 4:30
PM.

[mou] Birding Western Minnesota Today

2007-03-31 Thread Joel Claus
Mark Junghans and I headed west today to look for geese despite the rain.
We ended up with 53 species and found decent numbers of geese in Grant and
Traverse counties.

Highlights:
We found Snow and Greater White-fronted geese along Hwy 27 in Grant Cty on
both sides of the town of Herman. We encountered 4 nice flocks in Traverse
county along cty 10 w of 75, and along Hwy 75 between cty rd 10 and the
Wilkin county border.

We found a huge flock of Tundra swans along Hwy 75 just south of Traverse
County 97 that we estimated at 1200 birds plus.

2 Ross's geese mixed in with Snow Geese in Traverse Cty.
Large numbers of Canadas with a sprinkling of Cackling geese around the
Spink WPA on Hwy 54 in Grant County.
White Pelican at Mud Lake
Good numbers of ducks all over Grant and Traverse counties.

[mou] New Germany Water Conditions

2007-03-25 Thread Joel Claus
I was in the New Germany area this evening and checked out the area around
Crane Creek. There is a lot of water in all the traditional areas.
Hopefully this will turn into good shorebirding in a few weeks if the water
levels drop. Lots of scaup, ringnecks, and coots with a scattering of other
species at the pool that crosses Hwy 7.

At least 3 woodcock were displaying in Carver Park at the turnoff to the
Nature Center shortly after 8 PM this evening. Didn't have much time to
enjoy them though before the Park Reserve police showed up and told me the

[mou] NE Minnesota Birding - Spruce Grouse

2007-02-18 Thread Joel Claus
Spent part of the weekend birding St Louis and Lake counties. The highlight
was lots of Spruce Grouse! There were 10 on Lake Cty Rd 2 this morning at
dawn (ran into Linda Sparling there), and 4 more on Hwy 1, 1/4 mile east of
377 (Tomahawk Rd) at 9:15 AM. Unfortunately, the 4 male Spruce Grouse were
strolling around the body of a fifth that apparently had been hit by a car
just moments before judging from the blood that was still flowing.

Other sightings:
Boreal Chickadee and White-winged Crossbills (short look) along Lake Cty 2

Male Three-toed Woodpecker working a Tamarack right on the edge of Hwy 1, .4
mile west of mile marker 313. There were good numbers of Common Redpolls,
Pine Siskins, and Pine Grosbeaks in the Isabella area.

I visited Silver Bay and had a great look at the male Varied Thrush at 12:15
PM. The Catbird and White-throated sparrow that have been reported
previously were present as well.

100 plus Bohemian Waxwings were on the north side of the Hwy 61 expressway
at Larsmont Rd at 2:00 PM.

Saturday - Duluth Northern Hawk Owl was across the street from the coffee
shop at 3:30 PM. The White-winged Scoter and Long-tailed duck reported at
Canal Park were still present as well.

I also stopped by Carlos Avery on the way home this evening but found it
very quiet between 5 and 6 PM. No SE Owls to be seen and only one Harrier
for raptors.

A non-bird note; I came across a cow and calf moose crossing Hwy 1 between
Isabella and Finland. The cow was sporting a tracking collar around her
neck.

[mou] MSP Airport SNOWY OWL

2007-01-15 Thread Joel Claus
After spending the day chasing stake out birds around southern Minnesota I
found myself driving by the airport at dusk and on a whim decided to drive
24th and Cargo Rds on the chance the cold weather had brought down an owl.
At the very end of Cargo Rd where it ends in a turnaround I found a SNOWY
OWL perched on the corner of a small brown building at the edge of the
runway at 5:20 PM. The building is to your left as you enter the turnaround
area.

I was able to watch it for about five minutes through my scope before it
flew to the north. It was heavily barred below so I assume it is a first
winter bird.

Also today, the Green-tailed Towhee was at the feeder in Mountain Lake at
9:40 AM this morning. There were quite a few Horned Larks along Hwy 60 as
well as one flock of Lapland Longspurs near St James. Both the Slaty-backed
gull and Long-tailed duck were present at Point Douglas between 2 and 2:45
PM. I also refound the Townsend's Solitaire at the previously posted
location in Afton State Park at 3:45 PM.

[mou] Three-toed Woodpecker - St Louis Cty

2006-11-16 Thread Joel Claus
Sorry about the belated report - just got back to my computer today!

On Tuesday the 14th, I saw an American Three-toed Woodpecker from my deer
stand in Northern St Louis Cty. The bird spent the most of the afternoon
working at flaking away the bark from a dying Balsam Fir 10 yards from where
my stand was located.

The location of the brid was east of Cty Rd 361 and north of Hwy 1 in
Northern St Lousi Cty approximatlely 12 miles west of Tower. The GPS
coordinates were N47 46.864, W092 29.394. This is about a 30 minute hike in
from 361.

Several trees in the area had quite a bit of bark missing so this bird could
have been present for some time. The trees were on an upland ridge of
mature aspen and balsams with a large spruce bog a few hundred yards away.
I've seen Black-backed Woodpeckers many times over the years in the area but
this was the first Three-toed. I also saw the bird again briefly on
Wednesday the 15th.

Small numbers of Pine Grosbeaks were in the area and Grey Jays seemed to be
present in their usual numbers around our camp.

About 5:15 PM this evening I observed an Adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL in a
mixed flock of Herring and Ring-Billed Gulls in the Purgatory Creek wetland
near the junction of 212 and Hwy 5 in Eden Prairie.

Earlier this afternoon (2 PM) I had a quick look at the albinistic
Red-Tailed hawk that was reported last week by David Remiger. It was in
roughly the same location near the junction of Prairie Center drive and 78th
street. I only saw the back side of the bird as it perched in a tree and
saw no trace of pigmentation. It was pure snowy white - cool bird!

[mou] Variant Scarlet Tanager at Murphy-Hanrehan

Yesterday morning (5-29), I came across a orange variant male Scarlet =
Tanager. He had a deep orange-red head and breast while the back and =
belly were a yellowish orange turning to yellow under the tail. He had =
the classic black wings of a Scarlet Tanager. Compared to the =
illustration of this variation in the Sibley Guide, this bird had more =
orange and yellow on it. A very striking bird!

He was singing in the woods just off of 75 after it crosses the Credit =
River.
