When we observed the pair, the male would perch on the fence and small
trees along the fence in the vicinity of where the power line crosses the
road. The female was seen briefly perched in the grass up the hill from
where the second support pole for the power line is located. She after a
few minutes flew to the ground and disappeared presumably to tend to her

Even spell check did not help the Gray-cheeked Thrush get its moment on the

Gray-cheeked Warblers, but I did enter them as Nashville Warblers. I don't
think an ID of Gray-cheeked Warbler would get much credibility, even if it
does look like the Nashvilles we saw that day.

2024-05-03 Thread Steve Weston
Ahhh...SPRING! It is so hard to sit at the computer with the birds inviting
me to get out. Even after a very productive and enjoyable Salt Lake
Festival, I am still seeing lots of new birds. We personally had over 100
species on the Salt Lake trip. We stopped at Long Lake on our way out and
scored the Garganey in the rain and Avocets and a half dozen other
shorebirds. The weather was great on Saturday with winnowing snipe,
twirling phalaropes, hiding grebes, a flashing Black-throated Green
warbler, handsome Lark Sparrows, and many other treasures. On the ride back
we found a Cattle Egret not far from Marietta, miles of semi-invisible
longspurs and a probable Upland Sandpiper along the northern boundary of
Renville County.

Back home I added Ovenbird, Nashville, and Black and White to the five
warblers seen out west, along with a Horned Grebe and Avocet on Lake
Byllesby and a Gray-cheeked Warbler down near Red Wing. Flotillas of geese
are crossing our lake and grazing in the grass, but I have yet to see any
ducklings.

Last Saturday the woodlands had erupted in bloom. Now I am seeing
violets and garlic mustard flowering everywhere. Our Redbud is in full
glory. It should be a good time to search for morels, but I haven't had a
chance. Our Big Brown Bat is back this week, sheltering by our front door.

[mou-net] Annual Crane Count: April 13

2024-04-05 Thread Steve Weston
The International Crane Foundation Annual Crane Count will take place early
in the morning on Saturday, April 13. Join us. It could be as easy as
stepping out on your porch with a cup of coffee and listening for the
cranes you have been hearing. If you know where to find some cranes, we
could probably use your help. Or, contact us and we can put you in touch
with the coordinator in your county and find a place to count. I am
coordinating Dakota, Goodhue, and Scott counties and am looking for someone
to count cranes at Louisville Swamp and the Cannon River bottoms near Red
Wing.

For more information check out - /
https://savingcranes.org/learn/annual-midwest-crane-count/county-coordinator-resources/
or
send me questions. Don't know anything about cranes? Go to the website and
very quickly you will learn what you need to participate.

*Minnesota's famous author, blogger, and birder*
*Thursday, March 28, 7:30 p.m.*

Because of a last minute conflict, our scheduled speaker had to cancel, but
we have been fortunate to get Laura Erickson to join us.

Laura Erickson just got back from a two-week birding tour of Hawaiʻi,
visiting Oʻahu, Kauaʻi, and the Big Island. Her big goals before the trip
were to 1) learn everything she could about Hawaiʻian birds and the
challenges they face; 2) see and photograph a White Tern on the nest; 3) a
Nēnē, the state bird of Hawai’i; 4) and the beautiful ʻIʻiwi (which
non-natives call a Scarlet Honeycreeper). And, you have to see the
resulting photographs!

[mou-net] 124th Christmas Bird Count

2024-03-12 Thread Steve Weston
The 124th Annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count has been recorded and
reviewed. The mostly mild weather made it a pleasure to participate in and
a count for the record books in sharp contrast with last year's often
miserable weather. The participants came out in good numbers (2251), up
almost 6% from last year and found over 375,000 birds, 30% more than last
year's count. Waterfowl was everywhere and when the final analysis comes
in, many records were probably broken. The variety was also higher with 142
(132 last year) species, the second highest ever. There were 24 (10 last
year) first county winter records with 186 (166 last year) mostly rare bird
reports that needed to be documented.
Thanks again to all the participants and compilers for a very well done
Christmas Bird Count. We look forward to seeing you next year for the 125th
annual count. If you missed this year's count, join us next year. Every
set of eyes and ears are welcome.

Viewing platforms? What viewing platforms? There is one viewing platform at
Salt Lake and, to the best of my memory, that is not accessible. There may
be others at Big Stone, but I almost never get up there. Typically we all
pile into cars and drive down the road, until we see a wetland or something
else of interest and we jump out of the vehicles, gather by the cars, and
see what we can. Often there are people, who rarely to never get out of
their cars, as we point out the birds to them and the others. This is an
excellent birding experience for a handicapped birder.

[mou-net] Christmas Bird Counts

2023-12-09 Thread Steve Weston
The Christmas Bird Counts start next Thursday and there is still time to
get involved with many of the counts. Most Metro Area counts are in pretty
good shape in terms of volunteers, but the newer local counts of
Lakeville/Farmington, Minneapolis West, West Hennepin can use help last I
heard. And, new this year, is Clearwater, which at this point, has no idea
how much they can cover. While a lot of the eastern Minnesota counts are in
pretty good shape, counts that have expressed a need for volunteers include
counts on the Iron Range from Aurora down to Grand Rapids, and Grand
Marias, Rice Lake, and Winona counts. The Henderson count has set a goal to
recruit teams to help them cover the circle outside the Ney Nature Center.
Almost all the western Minnesota counts need help. With some counts, if you
show up with your car full you could double the participation. If you have
the time to drive out there and can get in, the Redwood Falls count is
awesome. They find flocks of some birds that nowhere else in the state
finds more than one or two. Ortonville and Pipestone could have more
western accidentals than anywhere in the state, but don't have enough
birders to find them. Other western counts that have contacted me to help
them find more participants include Jackson County, Mt. Lake/Windom, Fergus

I just got back into the realm of computers and on-line communication.
The second hand reporter got back to me that most of the many loons were in
Wayzata Bay off the yacht club and more were between Big Island and

Wayzata Yacht Club. There is a parking lot by the crane west of the
clubhouse. The group near Big Island was viewed from near or at Linwood

[mou-net] CBC - Can you help?

2023-11-29 Thread Steve Weston
The 124th annual Christmas Bird Count is starting on December 14th in some
90 count circles around the state and we need volunteers in the vast
majority of these counts or we will have parts of these circles that will
not be adequately surveyed, or even surveyed at all. If you are new to
birding, lend us your fresh eyes and ears and we will pair you with an
experienced birder, who will welcome and guide you. And, it's free. New, or
not, to the area, you will discover new birding locales.
To find a circle near you go to https://moumn.org/cbc . For most circles
you can find who to contact and when the count will be held. If you live in
one of these circles and would prefer to sit by your window and count the
birds at your feeders, let the person in charge know and he will fill you
in on what to do.
Join us and be part of the 124th year of this Christmas Bird Count.
Questions, let me know.

We had an intergrade western red-shafted x eastern yellow-shafted Northern
Flicker today at the feeder. This is the equivalent of a hybrid between
species, except both forms of flickers are the same species. While I never
saw it fly, I assume it was a red shafted bird as I could see no hint of
yellow on the tail. There were only a few red feathers on the nape. The
face was gray and the malar strip was black and red. I will post some
pictures on eBird, although I don't know how much they show.

While you can find parliaments of Long-eared and Short-eared owls and
probably Saw-whets during migration or perhaps on wintering grounds, other
Minnesota owls don't congregate. That said, my biggest concentration of
Great-horned Owls was north of Taylor's Falls along the St. Croix was 18
pairs plus one on territory. I was able to count them all from one spot.
When I joined the chorus, a pair flew in and I was immediately challenged.

[mou-net] Black-chinned Hummingbird

2023-08-28 Thread Steve Weston
Almost exactly twenty-four years ago I was bird watching in Miesville
Ravine County Park, in the southeast corner of Dakota county. In a
beautiful little wet meadow up trout brook I found a hummingbird feeding on
the jewelweed that did not look like the expected Ruby-throated
Hummingbird. After a couple of days of checking the internet, I identified
it as a female Black-chinned Hummingbird. The females of these closely
related species are difficult to separate. And, it had never been reported
in Minnesota. I didn't have a camera and without a photo, it would never be
accepted as a new species. Although the hummer was around for the next five
days, I could not get anyone down there with a camera until after the bird
had flown off. One dean of the state birding community even stated that it
was impossible to separate the females of the two species.
Every year at this time, I lead a bird hike to Miesville Ravine. This year
on August 20th, there was more spotted jewelweed flowering than I have seen
in years and the flowers were attracting a swarm of hummingbirds. As we
approached that meadow, I was talking about finding the hummingbird that
has never had an accepted sighting in Minnesota. As I explained what to
look for to find a Black-chinned: a hummer with a light crown that makes it
appear as if it has a black mask, Richard Gotz was clicking away on his
camera at a nearby hummer. He said, "Like this?"
I have attached a couple of his photos of a first year male Black-chinned
Hummingbird to my Facebook page and am hoping to be able to post one to
MOU's Recently Seen page, although I have to get it added to the list
before I can. Now I have to fill out the paperwork to submit the sighting
for MOURC review for a first Minnesota record.

[mou-net] On Quigley Lake, Eagan

2023-04-12 Thread Steve Weston
Ahh SPRING! Standing on my back porch counting birds. So much
happening I am having a hard time getting anything done. 30 species
counted. All kinds of new stuff showing up.
Neat stuff:
- A pair of courting loons on Carlson Lake, a block away, are the talk of
the neighborhood. Habitat isn't right. They should be moving on.
- Copulating Red-shouldered Hawks
- Chickadees checking out nest boxes
- Wood ducks in the trees
- 50+ Am. White Pelicans silently gliding overhead heading north.

Flowers are beginning to bloom: crocus, snowdrops, Siberian Squill, Aspen
tree.

Insects and bugs are showing up.
First insect of the spring (about a week ago): Marsh fly (?) with
geniculated (bent) antenna
Yellow jackets for several days
first moth (small unidentified) last night
first dragonfly - looked like a green darner (yesterday)
Mourning cloak butterfly (yesterday)
First tick (Saturday)

Northern leopard frog and painted turtle seen.

Hopefully, I will escape the yard today.

Currently, Minnesota has 346 SGCN, not including plants, of which 28% are
bird species. Importantly, up to 16% of the state’s invertebrates (aka bird
food) are also SGCN. The DNR is in the process of revising the plan for the
next 10 years (2025-2035) and Kristin will share with us what this means
for conservation in our state and how you can be engaged.

[mou-net] We need a few Birders!

2022-12-12 Thread Steve Weston
The 123rd Annual Christmas Bird Count starts in a couple of days and we
need more birders to help us cover the count. Check out moumn.org/CBC for
where and when counts are happening.
In the Metro Area:counts that are looking for people:
Lakeville (this Friday) This is a brand new count.
West Hennepin (this Saturday) Another brand new count
Bloomington (this Saturday) still has areas that are not covered.

Outstate counts: there are counts that only a few people (<6) are keeping
alive. You can have a significant impact:
Hibbing on the Iron Range in northern MN (on January 1)
Lamberton in SW MN (on 12/27)
Murray Co. in SW MN (after 12/21 - date not set)
Pipestone in SW MN (on 1/2)
Rice Lake NWR in North Central MN (on 12/31)
Upgaard WMA in North Central MN (on 1/1)

Are you a new birder and you don't think you will do a good job? A lot of
the really experienced birders would love to have somebody along. Another
set of eyes will find more birds. Are you outstate? Maybe way outstate? You
can participate in a count that if you don't show up, no one is going to be
counting the birds in the sector you could easily drive. Live in a count
circle and love birds, but you are not going to be able to get out in the
bad weather this winter? You can contribute by counting the birds at your
feeder. Call or email the contact for the circle you can help.

It is definitely not a shrew. The fur is too long and I can see ears in one

questions. There are lots of cranes that we've been missing, so we

Michael Joyce is a wildlife ecologist at the Natural Resources Research
Institute at the University of
Minnesota, Duluth. Michael will describe the history and current status of
fishers and highlight ongoing research into fisher ecology and management
in Minnesota. Fishers, a mid-sized carnivore in the weasel family,
were nearly extirpated from Minnesota in the early 1990s. Since then,
fishers have reestablished across the state and recently expanded their
range into southern Minnesota and the Twin Cities Metro.
The meeting is free and open to the public.

[mou-net] Warblers

2022-05-08 Thread Steve Weston
What a difference a day makes. Yesterday I spent most of the day at
Hok-si-lah in Lake City and at Sand Point nearby. We saw two Yellow-rumps
and ID'd another warbler by sound (Yellow) and probably heard two more
species.
Today, I walked out my door and spent less than an hour at the park next
door and found seven warblers (N. Waterthrush, Black & White, Tennessee,
Orange-crowned, Nashville, Redstart, Yellow). Other new birds today besides
most of those warblers include Cliff Swallow and Least Flycatcher.

Although I haven't gone out there, looking at the GPS coordinates,
directions should be:
Take I-35 north to Rock Creek (Hwy 70). Go west to the first intersection
(Hwy23) and
go south (left) for about 0.2 miles and look west.

I have heard the call to take down bird feeders and I have responded
marginally. So far, the only report of any backyard birds being found
infected has been a Blue Jay in Nova Scotia. I do not get any congregation
of birds on my feeders, so I haven't responded because of that. I do have
one feeder that because of its proximity to a Wood Duck box, does
occasionally have the ducks perch on it. That feeder is empty and will not
at this time be refilled.

[mou-net] Spring!

2022-04-01 Thread Steve Weston
We have a pair of Trumpeters at Quigley Lake that I have observed
copulating. The lake looks like prime habitat for raising a swan brood.
And, they have been here for about a week. Canada Geese, Wood Duck,
Mallard, and Hooded Mergansers are all hanging around and I expect them to
stay.
I went for a walk at Whitetail Woods (Dakota) County Park in part to scout
for the crane count next weekend. I did find a pair of cranes as well as
pairs of all the mentioned waterfowl, as well as N. Shovelers. The park was
flush with singing robins, redwings, and song sparrows.

Flight was silent. Size was consistent with a Red-tail. Behavior does not
fit anything I have found in the state, except perhaps a Coopers.

[mou-net] Winter Bird Forcast

2021-12-17 Thread Steve Weston
Here is some information on winter birds that may be showing up in
Minnesota. This weekend is a big time for the Christmas Bird Counts, so
make sure you get any reports of unusual birds reported, as they may be
included on counts.

Bird report: (please excuse my abbreviations may be off)
Here is some information on winter birds:
*Snowy Owls*: SNOW's are being reported all around the state and down into
Iowa. There are extensive reports along both sides of Lake Michigan. It
appears to be the start of a Snowy Irruptive winter.
*Great Gray Owls*: Outside of Sax/Zim there are almost no reports of Great
Gray Owls.
*Pine Grosbeaks*: The prediction is that droughts and wildfires in Canada
to the west of Lake Superior have created conditions that may push PIGR
into Minnesota. Pine Grosbeaks are showing up in northern Minnesota.
Reports of poor fruit crops in the Arrowhead may mean that they will push
further south, but no such movement is being seen yet.
*White-winged Crossbills*: Poor cone crops from NW Ontario and westward in
Canada should push these birds into the US including Minnesota in high
numbers. This movement is already being seen. In Minnesota WWCR they are
already being reported into the Metro Area and down in SW Minnesota.
*Red Crossbills* are forecast to be slightly higher than average for Type 2
& 4 in our area. Few sightings have been reported outside of the north, but
it should not be a bad year.
*Redpolls*: Conditions in Canada north and west of Minnesota should favor
some movement of these guys into Minnesota. Some 27,000 were counted over
Hawk Ridge, which might be a record. There are widespread reports
throughout the state with the exception possibly of the southeast. This
should be a high count year.
*Pine Siskins* should follow WWCR pushing into Minnesota. Reports are
widespread but spotty, localized. They are not very common in the
northwest, north central, or southwest. They will be around, but may be
missing in some expected locations.
*Evening Grosbeaks*: Last year was a major irruption year of EVGR''s This
year the forecast is for a second lesser echo irruption, and widespread
reports already indicate that it will be a good count in Minnesota.
Have fun! It looks like it will be a good year to find some good birds!

[mou-net] 122nd Annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count

2021-12-13 Thread Steve Weston
The 122nd Annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count starts Wednesday. While many
counts have restricted participation because of Covid, others welcome new
participants. This is a great way to find new birds and discover new
locations. Even if you can not get out to bird, if you live within one of
the over 80 count circles, and have feeders, you can count the
birds visiting your feeders.

Counts that may have limited space for new participants:
St.Paul (NE), Bloomington, Hastings, Afton, Henderson

Counts that any extra participation will have a significant impact:
Fairmount, Jackson County, Murray County, Little Falls, Greenwald, Hibbing,
Lambert, Mille Lacs South, Pipestone, Rice Lake NWR, Virginia

Counts that do not need new participants:
Minneapolis North, Sherburne, Cedar Creek Bog, Sax/Zim

For information on locations, dates, and contacts go to:
http://moumn.org/CBC. Due to Covid, you will be expected to bird your area
with little to no contact with other participants. But, even untrained
birders with a camera are better than no one covering the area. The CBC is
an annual bird census in a defined area on a particular day around
Christmas.

Count organizers, if you would like me to post an invite about your count,
let me know.

Vultures are essential for ecosystem health due to their role in removing
animal carcasses from the environment. However, vulture populations are
declining globally due to different threats. In fact, in the late 1990’s,
their populations declined dramatically (99%) in the Indian Subcontinent
due to intoxication with diclofenac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory
(NSAID) used in cattle. Diclofenac was banned in many of the Asian
countries involved, but it is now approved for veterinary use in
large animals in the European Union. Considering that the
Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal) has over 95% of Europe’s vulture
population, what is the risk of diclofenac (and other veterinary drugs) to
vultures in the Iberian Peninsula?

*Join us for MRVAC's second field trip of the year: Miesville Ravine *on
Sunday, June 6th at 7:30am. It's free and open to all. See website for
