Re: [mou-net] In search of shorebirds...
Lake Byllesby reservoir is a recreational lake during the summer and they keep the water levels high until after Labor Day, when they start to draw down the water and expose the mud flats. For that reason it is better for shorebirds in the spring than the fall. On Fri, Aug 14, 2020, 10:52 PM Nancy Sundeen wrote: > I was at Lake Byllesby today. [mou-net] Dakota County
Got out to bird Dakota County today (Saturday). Found only 3 warbler species. 7 Buff Breasted Sandpipers at Jirik sod farm. The most interesting bird was an Eastern Kingbird with a yellow breast on Michael Avenue just south of Trout Creek. Some time ago I documented an Eastern x Western hybrid Kingbird at this exact location. [mou-net] Around the Metro
On Monday I saw a Rough-legged Hawk hovering by Mother Lake on the NW corner of the lake (Hwy 62 & Hwy 77). It was instantaneously recognizable as it is the only large raptor that regularly hovers as it hunts. The other raptor that hovers is the Kestrel, which is quite small. One day visitors in my yard in the last week include a YB Sapsucker, one or two Tufted Titmice and a flock of European Starlings (thankfully a rare visitor). This has been quite a bountiful week on my Peromyscus trap line. Whether I am catching North American Deermice or White-footed Mice in my garage I am not certain. I try to keep the population down in the garage so I am not bothered by them scampering in the attic. I have no idea if it works. The most successful trap in one corner of the garage usually contains only partial remains of the trapped mice. The trapped mice are being eaten in all probability by shrews. I have caught two or three species including Short-tailed, cinereus (masked), and I believe pygmy. [mou-net] Christmas Bird Counts
The 121st annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count starts on Monday (12/14) and runs through January 5th, although there is only one count scheduled after the 1st. Minnesota has 85 counts, of which 5 are cancelled due to Covid, including 2 Wisconsin border counts. Two new counts in SW Minnesota are Redwood Falls and Murray County. Because of Covid induced restrictions, participation opportunities have been severely reduced. Many counts, including most or all of those in the Metro Area are full and not accepting new participants. Still, there are many smaller rural counts that have openings and would welcome participation. Re: [mou-net] Christmas Bird Counts
I have several inquiries about how to tell what counts need help. First, start at http://moumn.org/CBC/locations_map.php . You will be able to see the date of the count and the contact information for the compiler, who can give you more information. The problem is that of 85 counts, I probably have a solid handle on the need for participants for about 20% of the counts. And, have little information on an equal number. The other 60% I probably have a good idea. In the Metro area most of the counts don't need or probably don't need new participants. I suspect that there may be limited openings on the Afton, Hastings, Redwing counts. Outstate, I have heard that Grand Rapids, Little Falls, Mille Lacs, Rice Lake NWR, and Uppgaard WMA need volunteers. Most SW Minnesota counts are small and can use volunteers. Many of the other counts I do not know what's happening. Compilers can put in a note about their need or lack of need of participants, but few do. Re: [mou-net] Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers/Dakota Co
This is a very relevant question that is readily answered by the Sibley Field Guide, which I find to be one of the most accessible authorities on juvenile plumages. The juvenile plumages of the sapsuckers can be difficult to differentiate, except the timing is different for the different species. Where the Williamson's and Red-breasted Sapsuckers molt into adult plumage by August, and the Red-naped, which looks just like our Yellow-bellied juvenile, molts in October, while the Yellow-bellied does not molt until March. If you see a juvenile sapsucker in winter or early spring, it is definitely a Yellow-bellied. [mou-net] Annual Midwest Crane Count next Saturday 4/17
Greetings, The annual Midwest Crane Count sponsored by the International Crane Foundation is next Saturday, April 17th from about 5:30 am to 7:30 am. There are way more cranes than surveyors and if you are around, it is early enough that it should not conflict with your weekend plans (other than plans to catch up on your sleep). No expertise or special training is needed. An early start, a good ear, and a cup of coffee are recommended. Check out the website https://www.savingcranes.org/counter-information/ for training information, forms, and county coordinator contact info. I am coordinating Dakota County, Washington County, Goodhue County, and a few other locations that do not have active coordinators, besides promoting the count in Minnesota. If you know a location that has cranes, there is a good chance that no one will be counting them. I know that I don't have counters for locations that we know cranes have been breeding in Dakota County. Questions? Don't hesitate to contact me. Cowbirds are quite common. Habitat is forest edges, also farm yards. Re: [mou-net] Is coral colored staining a reliable way to distinguish tundra from trumpeter swans?
The staining should be completely environmentally determined and not related to differences in species or species behavior. So, it should not be a reliable way to differentiate the swan species. Better ways to differentiate the species beside field marks include calls and flock size. Both species are quite vocal and Sibley mobile eBird guide plays vocalizations and will be right there when needed to compare calls. Trumpeters move about in family groups typically of 2 to 8 birds. Tudras migrate in flocks of 20 to 100. So if you see a smattering of small groups of swans, they are probably Trumpeters and if you see a flock of 20 or more, they are probably Tudras. You can still see several family groups of Trumpeters together or when out of peak migration a small group of 10 to 20 Tundras. [mou-net] Cowbirds & bison
I had written in a recent post: "Cowbirds are quite common. Habitat is forest edges, also farm yards. Originally they apparently co-evolved with bison and it has been hypothesized they developed their parasitism as a mechanism to breed and leave their young behind as they followed the bison." While I can well document that information, Tony Hertzel informed me: "Current thinking among evolutionists says that brood parasitism in cowbirds first evolved in South America millions of years before Brown-headeds were around and well away from any bison. The concept of the species co-evolving with bison makes no sense when you think about how that might occur." I can definitely see how that hypothesis could have been developed with little factual information to support it. Thank you, Tony! [mou-net] Birding about the Metro
Spring is here and a lot is happening. Flowers have bloomed and faded in the yard and new ones are bursting out. The Saturday before last I beat the sun and was out before first light to listen to the cranes waking for the Annual Midwest Crane Count. I count at the marshes south of Whitetail Woods along 190th Street in Dakota County. The gates are closed for another month so you have to hike or bike in. I found a pair calling, but they were almost drowned out by the sounds of nature. I estimated that I had about 30 Snipe winnowing. Leopard frogs were snoring and chuckling and the chorus frogs and Red-winged Blackbirds competed with Song Sparrows, Robins, Cardinals and others. As I was leaving I crossed paths with turkey hunters arriving. I told them that I counted about 40 turkeys spread throughout the area. I wished them luck, but thought they were arriving late. Later I added two more cranes at the fairground slough south of Farmington, thanks to the person who reported them on eBird. Otherwise, I would not have looked. I ended up with 4 cranes, probably a personal record for me for the count, but people I encouraged to get out before dawn tallied more than 100, almost half coming from up in Sherburne refuge. On Tuesday I went out counting dwarf trout lilies for the DNR east of Faribault. The woods were bejeweled in the ephemeral flowers of spring. Besides finding both trout lilies (common & dwarf), we saw spring beauties, dutchman breeches, hepatica, bloodroot, wild ginger, anemones, buttercup, probably a few more. The only bird of note was a singing Lark Sparrow. Other birds of note in the yard and on the lake include Kingfishers, Yellow-rumps, Great Egret, Ring necked Ducks, and a young Trumpeter, who should know better than to be associating with a Canada Goose. I have to approach the window cautiously not to spook the woodies and hoodies that are checking out the wood duck boxes. Ahh, spring! [mou-net] Wood Duck on nest
I usually avoid my backyard this time of year as much as possible, as I have 3 Wood Duck boxes there. But, late tonight I decided to fill my suet feeder that hangs on the back of one of my boxes. I got up there and figuring it was early for the ducks to already be on eggs, I knocked gently and asked if anyone was home. Hearing nothing, I opened the door and looked in. I noticed the feathers on the nest and was about to reach in to check the number of eggs, when I realized that I was looking at a Wood Duck hen on the nest. I calmly closed the door and finished with the suet. She never moved. Another of the boxes has feathers caught on the hole indicating that hens have been in there. I did not look at the other box. [mou-net] About the Metro
Didn't get out of my yard today, but still found a few FOY birds: Great Crested Flycatcher Nashville Warbler Chipping Sparrow Reports from a friend in SE Dakota County included these FOY birds: Ruby-throated Hummingbird Baltimore Oriole Rose-breasted Grosbeak Eastern Towhee She also reported a brown bat and a few days ago, a Whip-poor-will I spent the day in the yard mostly gardening. Flowers in bloom include: Vinka, 3 kinds of violets, wild strawberries, forget-me-nots, the last of the Siberian Quil, forsythia (although it is pretty much in decline), hyacinth. I believe I also have Pennsylvania Sedge in bloom. I had gray treefrogs singing. Interesting as about 90% of our treefrogs are cope's gray treefrogs, but they start singing later in the season. In a few days I expect as the gray treefrogs peak, they will be almost drowned out by the cope's. A short walk this afternoon in a park in my neighborhood turned out to be quite birdy. 2 flycatchers: Great Crested & Least 6 or 7 warblers: yellow-rumps, Ovenbird, Black & White, Orange-crowned, Nashville, American Redstart, and probably a singing Cerulean. It is a pretty distinctive song. I can't think of anything else that finishes with that trill. 3 thrushes including Swainson's and Hermit. I photographed 4 species of violet today. [mou-net] Field trip to Hok-si-la this Saturday
I will be leading a MRVAC field trip to Hok-si-la park this Saturday, the first one since Covid put a stop to them. Meet at Hok-Si-La Park 2500 US Highway 61, north of Lake City at 7:30 am. This is about an hour and a half south of the Twin Cities. Bring a lunch if you want to stay for the afternoon birding. Moderate effort- some walking on trails. Our field trips are free and open to anyone, although all adults who participate must be vaccinated. No reservations needed, just show up. This traditional spring warbler field trip has a tradition of well over 30 years! [mou-net] Hok-si-la and more
On Saturday I led the first field trip post Covid for MRVAC. We had about 35 participants and ran into numerous St. Paul Audubon members, also looking for spring migrants. Conditions were cool, but comfortable. Birds were sparse. We spent the morning on the trails at Hok-si-la and after lunch a few of us hiked the Sand Point trail. Baltimore Orioles, Sapsuckers, and Grosbeaks were plentiful, although less plentiful than in previous years. Flycatchers were missing with only one seen by one member of the group. Sparrows were almost non-existent with only two species seen near the Sand Point trailhead. No thrushes other than Robins. Four species of Vireos, although someone else reported a Philadelphia. Five species of waterfowl including a late Bufflehead. I counted only 9 species of warblers with 2 more seen by the group. Probably the most interesting find was a pair of Pine Siskins building a nest by the parking lot. And, we had one Ruby-throated Hummingbird. Fruit trees are in bloom. Wildflowers on the walk included violets, Dutchman's breeches, trilliums, and wild geraniums. It was a glorious walk in the woods, even if the birding was sparse. At home, my redbud tree is a glorious riot of pink. The yard is in bloom with dandelions, wild strawberries, and forget-me-nots. And, a male Ruby-throat paid its respects with a quick visit at our feeder. Two of the four wood duck houses are occupied. One probably still has the hen on the nest. She did not stir last week when I filled the feeder above the house and looked in. This week nothing was stirring, but I did not peek in. A hen spooked out of the other house when I walked by, so I took the liberty to count her 15 warm eggs in the nest. She was back minutes after I left the yard. [mou-net] Baby Ducks
Canada Geese: I saw my first baby, only one about a week ago near a small pond in an industrial area of Minneapolis, followed by a second group of 10 on Tuesday. Mallards: My wife photographed a brood of 10 on our lake on May 7th. We saw what we assumed to be a second group of 10 on the lake on Saturday. Wood Ducks: We saw our first group of 5 that we believed jumped from one of our boxes this morning. Each of the boxes should have had more eggs than that. However, vulture populations are declining globally due to different threats. In fact, in the late 1990’s, their populations declined dramatically (99%) in the Indian Subcontinent due to intoxication with diclofenac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) used in cattle. Diclofenac was banned in many of the Asian countries involved, but it is now approved for veterinary use in large animals in the European Union. Considering that the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal) has over 95% of Europe’s vulture population, what is the risk of diclofenac (and other veterinary drugs) to vultures in the Iberian Peninsula? *Join us for MRVAC's second field trip of the year: Miesville Ravine *on Sunday, June 6th at 7:30am. The 122nd Annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count starts Wednesday. While many counts have restricted participation because of Covid, others welcome new participants. This is a great way to find new birds and discover new locations. Even if you can not get out to bird, if you live within one of the over 80 count circles, and have feeders, you can count the birds visiting your feeders. Counts that may have limited space for new participants: St.Paul (NE), Bloomington, Hastings, Afton, Henderson Counts that any extra participation will have a significant impact: Fairmount, Jackson County, Murray County, Little Falls, Greenwald, Hibbing, Lambert, Mille Lacs South, Pipestone, Rice Lake NWR, Virginia Counts that do not need new participants: Minneapolis North, Sherburne, Cedar Creek Bog, Sax/Zim For information on locations, dates, and contacts go to: http://moumn.org/CBC. Due to Covid, you will be expected to bird your area with little to no contact with other participants. But, even untrained birders with a camera are better than no one covering the area. The CBC is an annual bird census in a defined area on a particular day around Christmas. Count organizers, if you would like me to post an invite about your count, let me know. Actually the CBC season starts Tuesday, December 14th. Little Falls is not looking for new participants. [mou-net] Winter Bird Forcast
Here is some information on winter birds that may be showing up in Minnesota. This weekend is a big time for the Christmas Bird Counts, so make sure you get any reports of unusual birds reported, as they may be included on counts. Bird report: (please excuse my abbreviations may be off) Here is some information on winter birds: *Snowy Owls*: SNOW's are being reported all around the state and down into Iowa. There are extensive reports along both sides of Lake Michigan. It appears to be the start of a Snowy Irruptive winter. *Great Gray Owls*: Outside of Sax/Zim there are almost no reports of Great Gray Owls. *Pine Grosbeaks*: The prediction is that droughts and wildfires in Canada to the west of Lake Superior have created conditions that may push PIGR into Minnesota. Pine Grosbeaks are showing up in northern Minnesota. Reports of poor fruit crops in the Arrowhead may mean that they will push further south, but no such movement is being seen yet. *White-winged Crossbills*: Poor cone crops from NW Ontario and westward in Canada should push these birds into the US including Minnesota in high numbers. This movement is already being seen. In Minnesota WWCR they are already being reported into the Metro Area and down in SW Minnesota. *Red Crossbills* are forecast to be slightly higher than average for Type 2 & 4 in our area. Few sightings have been reported outside of the north, but it should not be a bad year. *Redpolls*: Conditions in Canada north and west of Minnesota should favor some movement of these guys into Minnesota. Some 27,000 were counted over Hawk Ridge, which might be a record. There are widespread reports throughout the state with the exception possibly of the southeast. This should be a high count year. *Pine Siskins* should follow WWCR pushing into Minnesota. Reports are widespread but spotty, localized. They are not very common in the northwest, north central, or southwest. They will be around, but may be missing in some expected locations. *Evening Grosbeaks*: Last year was a major irruption year of EVGR''s This year the forecast is for a second lesser echo irruption, and widespread reports already indicate that it will be a good count in Minnesota. Have fun! It looks like it will be a good year to find some good birds! [mou-net] Melanistic Buteo
Today, I found a melanistic buteo that I assumed was a Red-tail on Kasota just east of Highway 280 on the border of St. Paul and Minneapolis. The bird appeared to be completely dark brown. Hopefully, I will get a better look at it in the near future. [mou-net] Unidentified Bird Sighting
During the Wabasha CBC at one of my favorite stops that has in previous years yielded rarities including Townscends Solitaire and Varied Thrush, we had a large white raptor with a beige back? (or head) flash by us flying through the woods at below eye level. I saw the bird for perhaps a second. Flight was silent. Size was consistent with a Red-tail. Behavior does not fit anything I have found in the state, except perhaps a Coopers. [mou-net] Spring!
We have a pair of Trumpeters at Quigley Lake that I have observed copulating. The lake looks like prime habitat for raising a swan brood. And, they have been here for about a week. Canada Geese, Wood Duck, Mallard, and Hooded Mergansers are all hanging around and I expect them to stay. I went for a walk at Whitetail Woods (Dakota) County Park in part to scout for the crane count next weekend. I did find a pair of cranes as well as pairs of all the mentioned waterfowl, as well as N. Shovelers. The park was flush with singing robins, redwings, and song sparrows. Re: [mou-net] Avian influenza and bird feeders
I have heard the call to take down bird feeders and I have responded marginally. So far, the only report of any backyard birds being found infected has been a Blue Jay in Nova Scotia. I do not get any congregation of birds on my feeders, so I haven't responded because of that. I do have one feeder that because of its proximity to a Wood Duck box, does occasionally have the ducks perch on it. That feeder is empty and will not at this time be refilled. [mou-net] Warblers
What a difference a day makes. Yesterday I spent most of the day at Hok-si-lah in Lake City and at Sand Point nearby. We saw two Yellow-rumps and ID'd another warbler by sound (Yellow) and probably heard two more species. Today, I walked out my door and spent less than an hour at the park next door and found seven warblers (N. Waterthrush, Black & White, Tennessee, Orange-crowned, Nashville, Redstart, Yellow). Other new birds today besides most of those warblers include Cliff Swallow and Least Flycatcher. This Sunday, June 5th, I will lead the MRVAC Dakota County Prairie Birds field trip. Meet at Schaar's Bluff picnic area at 7 am. After a short hike, we will drive to various wetland and prairie locations to search for grassland and other prairie species. Some locations are quite unbirded. [mou-net] We need a few Birders!
The 123rd Annual Christmas Bird Count starts in a couple of days and we need more birders to help us cover the count. Check out moumn.org/CBC for where and when counts are happening. In the Metro Area:counts that are looking for people: Lakeville (this Friday) This is a brand new count. West Hennepin (this Saturday) Another brand new count Bloomington (this Saturday) still has areas that are not covered. Outstate counts: there are counts that only a few people (<6) are keeping alive. You can have a significant impact: Hibbing on the Iron Range in northern MN (on January 1) Lamberton in SW MN (on 12/27) Murray Co. in SW MN (after 12/21 - date not set) Pipestone in SW MN (on 1/2) Rice Lake NWR in North Central MN (on 12/31) Upgaard WMA in North Central MN (on 1/1) Are you a new birder and you don't think you will do a good job? A lot of the really experienced birders would love to have somebody along. Another set of eyes will find more birds. Are you outstate? Maybe way outstate? You can participate in a count that if you don't show up, no one is going to be counting the birds in the sector you could easily drive. Live in a count circle and love birds, but you are not going to be able to get out in the bad weather this winter? You can contribute by counting the birds at your feeder. Call or email the contact for the circle you can help. Questions? Let me know, Looking for more people for your count? Let me know. Ahh SPRING! Standing on my back porch counting birds. So much happening I am having a hard time getting anything done. 30 species counted. All kinds of new stuff showing up. Neat stuff: - A pair of courting loons on Carlson Lake, a block away, are the talk of the neighborhood. Habitat isn't right. They should be moving on. - Copulating Red-shouldered Hawks - Chickadees checking out nest boxes - Wood ducks in the trees - 50+ Am. White Pelicans silently gliding overhead heading north. Flowers are beginning to bloom: crocus, snowdrops, Siberian Squill, Aspen tree. Insects and bugs are showing up. First insect of the spring (about a week ago): Marsh fly (?) with geniculated (bent) antenna Yellow jackets for several days first moth (small unidentified) last night first dragonfly - looked like a green darner (yesterday) Mourning cloak butterfly (yesterday) First tick (Saturday) Northern leopard frog and painted turtle seen. Hopefully, I will escape the yard today. We will meet at 7am at Schaar’s Bluff (Spring Lake Park) and after a short hike around the picnic area, we will drive the prairies of Dakota County in search of grassland and other bird species. We will visit both well-known birding hot spots and little known locales. With the exception of some short level- ground hikes, birding will be mainly at roadside stops. This field trip is free and open to the public and no reservations will be taken. Both new and experienced birders are welcome. Bring a lunch if you want to stay for the afternoon’s birds. [mou-net] Miesville Ravine Field Trip this Sunday
I will be leading a field trip to Miesville Ravine (Dakota Co. Park) this Sunday (Aug 20). Meet at 7:30am in the north parking lot at 27970 Orlando Trail. We’ll start out on the upper trail looking for early fall warbler migrants and cuckoos. Bring lunch if you want to stay for the afternoon. This trip will be moderate effort. No reservations are needed. The trip is free and open to the public. [mou-net] Black-chinned Hummingbird
Almost exactly twenty-four years ago I was bird watching in Miesville Ravine County Park, in the southeast corner of Dakota county. In a beautiful little wet meadow up trout brook I found a hummingbird feeding on the jewelweed that did not look like the expected Ruby-throated Hummingbird. After a couple of days of checking the internet, I identified it as a female Black-chinned Hummingbird. The females of these closely related species are difficult to separate. And, it had never been reported in Minnesota. I didn't have a camera and without a photo, it would never be accepted as a new species. Although the hummer was around for the next five days, I could not get anyone down there with a camera until after the bird had flown off. One dean of the state birding community even stated that it was impossible to separate the females of the two species. Every year at this time, I lead a bird hike to Miesville Ravine. This year on August 20th, there was more spotted jewelweed flowering than I have seen in years and the flowers were attracting a swarm of hummingbirds. As we approached that meadow, I was talking about finding the hummingbird that has never had an accepted sighting in Minnesota. As I explained what to look for to find a Black-chinned: a hummer with a light crown that makes it appear as if it has a black mask, Richard Gotz was clicking away on his camera at a nearby hummer. He said, "Like this?" I have attached a couple of his photos of a first year male Black-chinned Hummingbird to my Facebook page and am hoping to be able to post one to MOU's Recently Seen page, although I have to get it added to the list before I can. Now I have to fill out the paperwork to submit the sighting for MOURC review for a first Minnesota record.
