[mou-net] Shorebirds

2024-04-22 Thread Tom Gilde
Does anyone have any thoughts about the absence/presence of shorebirds within,
say, a 75-mile radius of the metro area this spring? It seems like they’ve
been largely absent this year or I’ve slept through their various migrations.
I don’t know whether drought and further environmental degradation alone
explains this. Thanks for any insights.

2023-11-17 Thread Tom Tustison

Beth,

On behalf of the MOU Records Committee,
I would like to compliment you on your extraordinarily detailed report of what
transpired at your site. This is the best summary I have seen in my nearly 14
years as chairman of the Records Committee. You have made the committee work so
much easier.

You are a model hostess to say the least. Thank you for a marvelous job of
keeping everybody informed on what was going on. You delighted many birders and
your hospitality was exemplary!

Thank you.

[mou-net] Shore birds, upcoming weekend

2023-08-03 Thread Tom Gilde
With continuing drought, it's tough to figure out where to go for good
shorebird viewing. I have time on my hands this coming Saturday and am looking
for suggestions, either within a 50-mile radius of St. Paul or a 100-mile
radius if it is very promising. By "good" or "promising", I mean a nice
variety, reasonably accessible viewing, maybe even an uncommon species or two.
I'd like to be within camera and binocular range - I don't own a scope. I
respect that many birders may not want more people crashing a favorite site,
and I respect that, but any ideas gratefully accepted and considered. Thanks,

[mou-net] St. Paul raptors

2022-04-24 Thread Tom Gilde
The nesting box atop the XCel power plant had a Peregrine sitting on the outer
half-wall, facing inward, about a week ago. It flew off and reappeared 20
minutes later. I haven’t seen either falcon in a couple of visits since but I
haven’t tarried at the site, either. While driving both sides of the
Mississippi I noticed an eagle in the nest on the power line on the east end of
Pickerel Lake. The bird was performing some operation with its first before
carefully setting itself back down on the nest - I’m hoping that it was turning
an egg before settling back down on it. A little further up river, from the
Lilydale side, I stopped and saw that there was an eagle sitting on the old
established nest on the north side of the river and that both Osprey were atop
the platform just upriver from XCel. Yesterday, while walking in Lilydale
along Pickerel Lake, there were two adult eagles perched next to the new nest
on the west end of Pickerel Lake. So, in an oval no more than a mile long
there might be as many as five active nests. Or not. At least it’s a bit
heartening in this flu year.

Re: [mou-net] Avian influenza and bird feeders

2022-04-15 Thread Tom Gilde
I’m hoping that the ornithologists will weigh in. I’m planning to run out the
rest of the sunflower seed in our feeder and then not refill until late June,
approximately. What I’ve read suggests that avian flu is principally spreading
via waterfowl and that raptors which come in contact with them also potentially
become another vector. The late June timeframe also is based on what I’ve read
- that the flu dissipates in the summer. I imagine that crows could also
become vectors if they eat infected carrion. I’m hoping that most songbirds
are relatively less likely to be exposed but I’ll take down the feeder for the
present. Would definitely like to hear from a professional.

Could anyone clue me in on how to access Marshall Terrace in NE Mpls? The
directions from eBird got me to the locked gates of the secured XCel power
plant. I’d be surprised if XCel was opening its gates to anyone just dropping
by with binoculars but what do I know? Thanks,

[mou-net] Elizabeth Bell

2022-03-25 Thread Tom Bell
My wife Elizabeth took her last breath this morning. I post this because the
birding community was a big part of our life. Elizabeth served MOU as editor of
the newsletter and as membership chairman. We will have a memorial service at
Carpenter Nature Center in April. I will keep you informed. Lung cancer was the
villain, she elected not to tell many, yet we have known about it for over two
years. The first year was symptom free and we took our last birding trip to
Panama. We have valued the friendship of many of you.

Re: [mou-net] Gulls in downtown St. Paul, Ramsey County

2021-12-16 Thread Tom Gilde
I ventured down along the Mississippi this afternoon and came away with a
number of shots of various gulls. I’m wondering whether anyone would be
willing to look at some of the pix after I’ve finished going through them - I’d
like to avoid the embarrassment of mistakenly reporting gulls that were noted
yesterday by Bob Dunlap and others. Nearly every picture is of a bird on the
wing - if nothing else it was about time that practiced using tracking focus.

Thank you to any and all takers. Please give me a since of what quantity you
might be willing to look at.

[mou-net] The impact of House Sparrows

2021-07-02 Thread Tom Gilde
I am interested in learning some accurate information about the negative
effects of this invasive species. Yesterday I took issue with an on-line
statement that “their presence directly correlates to the decline of native
species”.

While I suppose that many factors in native bird declines “directly correlate”
with the declines, including some specific factors for specific species, I
argue that other factors, such as habitat loss, high towers and glass-fled
buildings and free range house cats had a greater impact of bird declines.
Essentially, we were not exactly arguing over the same thing but the exchange
left me wanting to have some accurate information about populations, their
declines and, in some instances, their comebacks. So, thanks to anyone who is
willing to help me out/set me straight.

[mou-net] Blustery days

2021-03-30 Thread Tom G
As March goes out like a lion I am wondering whether there can be any advantage
found, or at least disadvantage limited, in searching for certain categories of
birds on these windy days. With specific regard to (1) waterfowl, might high
winds keep them closer to shore and offer any advantage by way of allowing
closer views. Also, regarding shorebirds, will the high winds have much impact
on them, either by possibly affording better/worse views than on calmer days?
Interested in making lemonade with these days. Thanks in advance for any
thoughts.

Seen mid-morning in the open area around the picnic pavilion at Pickerel Lake;
it circled low overhead and perched briefly only yards away, affording a good
look at its narrow eye mask. This is the same location where a N. Shrike
presented itself last fall, though none were detected all winter.
The open water on the lake is expanding, and last week's flock of Trumpeter
Swans was replaced by a flock of Ring-billed Gulls. Bald Eagles are in evidence
over both lake and river, and one of them was sitting briefly in the smaller,
flatter nest on the west end of the lake, while a pair of adults were doing
tandem flight over the 35E bridge. Also present was a Red-tailed Hawk, dodging
harassment by a Crow.
In the wetland, the spring chorus is just beginning to ramp up, with the
arrival a few days ago, of Red-winged Blackbirds. A Song Sparrow was also
audible, but there was no sound from the flushed flock of small, ground-feeding
birds that may have been American Tree Sparrows, in an area where they were
seen in the fall.

Re: [mou-net] MN DNR Bald Eagle Cam is on again

2021-02-01 Thread Klein, Tom (DNR)
A small correction to the status of last year's nesting (mentioned below): one
chick (the last to hatch) perished after a couple of weeks. Of the two that
successfully fledged, one died shortly after fledging when it collided with a
power line. The fate of the remaining chick is unknown. (note: banding had to
be abandoned for this covid-year clutch).

There is a new young male paired with the female this year. Not a lot of
activity yet. Last year three nestlings fledged.

I saw a Flicker in the front yard (St Paul) this morning and, consulting Bob
Janssen's Birds of Minnesota, confirmed that this was no big deal. It did
prompt me to wonder and ask how the seasons are broken down in the MOU's
occurrence maps. Are the seasons based on the meteorological seasons or the
astronomical seasons? (For example, does a winter record date from Dec. 1 or
Dec. 21?) Thanks.Tom Gilde

Can anyone explain how to access Louisville Swamp? It sounds like a pretty
intriguing place. I'd be coming from St. Paul and eventually down Hwy 169, it
appears. I'd also like to know what I'm in for once I'm on the scene - what
may or may not be passable, where to park, etc. While in the area, it looks like
Rapids Lake might make for a good twofer. It doesn't appear to be accessible
from 169 - I am interested in any advice about access, observing strategies,
whatever.Many thanks, Tom Gilde

Re: [mou-net] In search of shorebirds...

2020-08-16 Thread Tom Gilde
Thanks, Curt - I’ve followed discussions about New Germany with interest. I’m
wondering if there is much satisfaction to be had birding these wetlands with
binoculars or if it is really much better to have a scope (I don’t have a
decent scope).

Re: [mou-net] In search of shorebirds...

2020-08-14 Thread Tom Gilde
I meant to send this to the entire listserv - I am curious about conditions at
Lake Byllesby.

Tom G

“ Missy, the sod farm is on both sides of Blaine Ave. for a half mile, tops.
The west side was being stripped of sod when I visited earlier in the week -
apparently that is where birds are now being found. There are also a variety
of puddles along this road and there will be more after this evening, I’d
imagine.

To the west along 200th St. there is another sod farm on the south side of
200th. This street is fairly busy but I think that there is sufficient
shoulder to park on, although I’ve been leery of that. If you head south of
Farmington on Denmark Ave. you will find the eBird hotspot, Farmington
Shorebird Ponds - sloughs, actually. I watched a number of Virginia Rails
there and saw some sandpipers, too, think week.

Maybe others will weigh in about Lake Byllesby, further south. There are great
mudflats on the northwest side of this lake unless the dam on the east side has
been opened to raise the water level - I don’t know if these flats are exposed
or not but they were great in spring, even yielding Avocets.“

Marsh Lake is near Appleton or the Town of Correll, 30 miles west of
Montevideo. It’s a pretty big lake so the best place to see shorebirds is
on the western end here are the coordinates to this area. ( 45.2182461,
-96.1956195).

If you want to get close you will need water boots and you’ll want to stay
closer to the grass otherwise you will sink into the mud.

This was first time there, looking forward to many more and exploring the
wonderful natural areas close to the lake.

[mou-net] Fwd: [mou-net] No Shorebirds

Chet, you undoubtedly receive daily rare bird email from eBird or see the posts
on MOU’s web page . The most recent email noted a report of a Black-bellied
Plover in Big Stone County. I often check out the posters’ complete lists to
see what time of day the persons were out and/or to see what else they saw.
The list that was posted was amazing for quality and quantity of birds. Only
problem is it’s quite a hike,

I understand that there are some distinctions between seasons but I’m not

in one migration but not the other. Thanks to any/all respondents.

Being a relative newby, I’m perplexed by many of my photos, at distance, in the
failing light last evening. If anyone is willing to review a few shots I’d be
happy to parse some around. The other birders I met included a white-rumped
sandpiper among the spotted but I haven’t figured that out for myself, yet. I
did see most of the peeps, a pectoral, both yellowlegs and at least one
short-billed dowitcher. There may be a stilt among the photos but can’t yet
say. A scope was necessary for ID-ing a lot of the birds, in the moment. Did
not see/yet identify any rarer shorebirds.

[mou-net] MEP survey

2019-08-11 Thread Tom Bell
Some asked for a report of the survey results, so following is a brief
one.
I received responses from 60 persons, and I thank them.
Climate crisis received 16 votes which was the highest. There were four
separate categories related to climate, so the total of all 5 was 30, the
highest category was climate crisis with focus on habitat protection, which is
not a surprise when responders were birders. Banning suffide-ore mining was
popular with 16 votes. There were five categories dealing with water pollution
and its sustainability which was selected by 16 votes. Government/Agency
Accountability to Protect the Environment had 11 votes. Strengthening
protection for wilderness and public lands had 10 votes. Ten selected
strengthening protection for wilderness and public lands. Wildlife corridors
and plastic pollution had 7 and 5 votes. All the other categories had less than
5 votes.
Several commented on the difficulty of only selecting 2 when our planet
has so many dire environmental needs, and several added their concern which was
not listed.
Let us hope for a good legislative session for the environment we care so much
about.

Thanks to those who posted yesterday the sighting of the Kentucky Warbler at
the Carleton Arboretum. Drove down there from Minneapolis today and with the
good directions found the bridge and trail. Hung around for about a couple
hours. I went further upstream and asked another birder to wave her arms if
she saw it.
A few minutes later, she was waving her arms. I ran excitedly to the spot and
after a few minutes was richly rewarded with great sightings! A lifer for me!

[mou-net] Robin roost

2017-01-10 Thread Tom Bell
Reading Bruch Falls robin roost account I looked up mine. It is a bit long.
That roost site has not been used since with any high numbers.
Winter Roost Site for American Robins

I live on Grey Cloud Island, the very southwest corner of
Washington County, and in early February I observed many robins flying toward a
plantation of spruce and pine trees, located where Pioneer Road met county road
75. A few days later I started counting the robins coming to the area and
counted 900, but the robins just kept coming. On February 15, 2010, I started
counting at 4:30 p.m., about one hour before sunset. It was cloudy with a
fairly stiff breeze out of the northwest. The robins flew in one at a time and
then in groups of up to about 30 birds. By one hour after sunset the stream of
robins had subsided, but by then I had counted 2,300 birds. I know we have had
an increase of American Robins wintering in Minnesota, but I did not ever
expect to see so many at one time.

The number seems exorbitant, but I firmly believe it is a minimum,
as when estimating the size of some groups flying in, I was careful to use my
lower estimate. All of the birds came in from the west, where the Mississippi
River is less than a half-mile away. Also many came from the open water areas
at the bottom of the Aggregate Industries limestone quarry less than one fifth
of a mile west of the conifers.

The plantation was never thinned, so the trees are very dense. The
spruce trees are all less than 20 feet tall and the pines less than 30 feet.
The arriving robins would first perch in surrounding deciduous trees before
descending into the conifers. I found it amazing to observe so many robins
disappearing in only 1.5 acres (0.6 hectares) of densely growing conifers.

Being curious about when the robins left their nightly roost site,
on 22 February, 2010, I set up my vigil. The first robins left one half hour
before sunrise, being cloudy it was quite dark at that time. Ten minutes later
there was a fairly steady stream of birds flying out to the west. One hour and
fifteen minutes after sunrise the last of the observed robins left. On leaving
the birds did not first perch in a surrounding deciduous tree, they just flew
directly away.

[mou-net] old Black-capped Chickadee

2016-12-10 Thread Tom Bell
On December 9, Dennis Donath recorded that the age of the Chickadee he was
handling will be 9 years old after Jan 1, 2017. The bird was first captured and
banded at Carpenter Nature Center on 11/07/09. That is old for a chickadee,
very few exceed 5 years in age. For those doing the math in human figuring, it
is not that old, the banding laboratory lists the birds hatching year as year
one and after each New Years Day it is a year older. That chickadee entered our
traps or flew into a mist net numerous times over the years. I wonder if it
learned that if it walked into a Potter’s trap and hopped on the treadle it
could sit and eat sun flower seeds till someone came and extracted it.

This is great news. A long, hard effort from many people went into this win.
Next: let's focus on saving the Jaques murals.

While it did not get any major publicity, buried in the work that the
Legislature completed yesterday was $51.5M for the Bell Museum to move to the
St Paul campus. This will not cover the total cost of the move so there will be
the need for a significant fund raising campaign. You will be hearing more
about that.

Thanks to all of you who contacted legislators and University officials in
support of this major effort. Please be sure to thank your legislators for
their work. Special thanks are due to Representative Alice Hausman. Without her
vision, political skill and tenacity, this would not have happened.
Others deserving our thanks are President Eric Kaler and Dean Brian Buhr of the
University of Minnesota and Steve Birke, Lee Pfannmueller and the Bell Advisory
Board who were tireless in their efforts as was Bell Director Susan Weller.

It has been a long journey but the end is in sight. I look forward to the day
when we can participate in the exhibits and educational programs of the new
Bell and start of a new tradition of having our annual MOU Paper Session in
what promises to be a spectacular facility.

[mou-net] Suet

2014-05-16 Thread Tom Bell
Today (Friday) I observed up to seven Yellow-rumped Warblers on one suet cage,
not all could extract food at the same time. Possibly the cold weather has made
it difficult to retrieve enough insects.

Re: [mou-net] Koochiching Cty. Grosbeaks/Owl Luring Bill

2014-04-15 Thread Tom Crumpton
Good numbers of evening grosbeaks, more swans than I've seen in 30+
years and pelicans returned last week

GEE Whiz lets bait the baiters.

If it not anti logging rants which I ignored this year.
Its now lets let the public know how unethical we really are (but
were ethical in our own eyes).

There is an existing law about not harassing wildlife, It would just
be more enforceable with the new legislation. Alter the existing law
to address owl baiting.

Lets keep our wildlife (raptors) wild by not feeding them or messing
with their routine.

No wonder Sax-Zim is such a popular place for owls - they get fed by
people there!

Can I charge more for guiding if I bring owls within 10 feet of you?

So many questions and so many opinions.

From the Pine Island Bog where the owls are pretty much left in peace
to carry on in a natural fashion and not many people cry about
logging except for how hard it is (human nature I guess).

Not a Logger, maybe a bird guide or bird baiter?
Have a Great day

David:

First part of the Amendment for HF 2582

8.3(a) A person may not intentionally lure or feed an owl in the
wild with
any animate

8.4or inanimate object, food, or animal. A person in violation of
this
section is guilty of a

8.5petty misdemeanor.

Definition of Lure from the Webster Dictionary.
1lure *noun* \'lu?r\

: an appealing or attractive quality

: a device used for attracting and catching animals, birds, or
especially
fish

So to lure would mean to use a device for ATTRACTING and catching
animals,
birds or especially fish. So on line 8.3(a) where it mentions lure
we can
use the definition from Webster's Dictionary and then go to the next
line,
8.4 or inanimate object which could mean artificial lures like
home-made
mice decoys attached to fishing line or it can also include portable
CD
players, Smart Phones, tape players and IPads that use CDs,
cassettes or
owl song applications.

Actually no David there are no examples of inanimate objects in this
amendment. Not one example and the way its written its to vague to
define
what the law is actually focusing on. We know the bill mentions
examples
of animate objects ( food, living and frozen animal ) but no
examples of
inanimate objects.

Again inanimate object is included with food or animal. So a
inanimate
object includes any sound device, decoy, or a robot owl (LOL).
There is no
definition nor examples of inanimate objects the bill is referring
too!

Yes anyone who uses any tapes for any night time owl prowl walks
during the
spring time will no longer be able to use them. Any spring owl
censusing
will no longer be able to use owl tapes to lure or attract an owl
unless
you have a permit. No longer will tour leaders, guides, volunteer
leaders
at nature centers or state park volunteers will be able to use owl
tapes to
lure an owl in for education purposes. You will no longer be able to
answer
back Barred Owls to lure them from their known location to your
location.
No longer will you be able to whistle in N. Saw Whet Owls for CBCs
or Big
Days in MN.

As far as I know there is not one place in Minnesota that bans
taping of
birds including owls.

Until this HR 2582 is rewritten and not done so in some quick
fashion as
they clearly shown by how vague it is. This amendment needs to go
back to
those who wrote and use some research and data to back it up. Wait
there
is no research or data to prove that luring an owl or feeding an owl
is
harmful just a lot of erroneous claims and assumptions.

I have a very good friend who is very close to State Rep. Rick Nolan
and
also works for him. We talked today and he is sending my letter to
some
folks in the MN House and Senate. I sent my letter to all 134
members of
the House and gotten favorable replies. So we will see what happens
or if
anything happens by May 26th.

By the way I found some owl nests belonging to owls that were fed
for
nearly 4 months during the winter season and while I was observing
them
yesterday that these owls should of died by now but there they were
actively hunting wild rodents on their own while the females were on
nests.
So does feeding owls harm them? Well for these northern owls --
they were
not effected despite all the free offers they fed on during winter
season.

By the way I ask you to read this article:
http://moumn.org/loon/view_frame.php?block=111year=1997 ( I was
strongly
oppose to this event and made a lot of people angry at me at the
time.
Where was the DNR and all those oppose to this back then? That's
right
there were fewer photographers back then and digital photography was
not so
popular like it is today. Every birder I meet these days owns a
digital
camera and photographs birds.

So please contact your local representative and say NO to this
poorly
written bill.

Mike

[mou-net] proof of residency

2014-02-19 Thread Tom Bell
Last Friday (2/14) at Carpenter Nature Center (CNC) we re-trapped a
Black capped Chickadee that was first banded there on 8/28/09 and aged as a
hatching year bird. It was re-trapped again at CNC 11/13/09, three times in
2010, two times in 2011 and 2012, three times in 2013 and two times in 2014.
All re-traps were in late fall or winter. Most of the chickadees we trap in the
winter are re-trapped birds.

[mou-net] thirsty robins

2014-02-10 Thread Tom Bell
Eleven American Robins have invaded our heated bird bath and I have never
experienced such thirsty birds. They crowd around the bird bath and stay there
dipping, sipping and pooping. I counted 20 dips by one bird before it caught
movement and flew off. Granted, they do not take in a large quantity of water
each time they dip into the water, lift their heads to swallow, but they take
in enough so that the bird bath has to filled twice a day. The birds just
continue to return to the water source. From their discharge, it looks like
they are eating buckthorn, so I wonder if that is a contributing factor.

[mou-net] Merlin nesting, West St. Paul, Dakota County

2013-07-27 Thread Klein, Tom R (DNR)
There has been a pair of merlins nesting this year at corner of Butler and
Smith Ave. in West St. Paul. According to the homeowner at the location they
have fledged 3 chicks recently and there has been a nesting at this location
for 4-5 years. This is news to me, although it being about half a mile from my
house I suspect this is the same merlin pair I have seen the past two springs
in my part of the neighborhood. The adult birds may be easily viewed perched in
a partially dead ash tree near the SE corner of the intersection.

[mou-net] Pine Siskins

Last Friday, June 7, at Carpenter Nature Center in Washington County,
we banded a Pine Siskin with a brood patch. I am aware that following some
winters when many siskins show up at our latitude and below, a few are known to
nest below their usual nesting area. So, I was wondering if anyone else has
seen evidence of nesting at 45* N. Latitude or below.

The merlin pair are still very active in the neighborhood, near the corner of
