[mou-net] Mou at the fair
Thanks to all of the volunteers who have signed up to work at the MOU booth. There are a few remaining shifts. It is important that these two 5-9 shifts have at least one volunteer. The DNR requires that we keep our booth open until 9:00 because the main DNR building is open until 9:00 and that is where we store our cabinets. Two volunteers best but one will do Saturday August 25: 5-9 Friday August 31: 5-9 One volunteer needed for these shifts: Friday August 24: 5-9 Monday August 27: 1-5 Thursday August 30: 5-9 Saturday September 1: 5-9 email me, Kate Kelnberger: kkelnber...@boreal.org Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

[mou-net] Black-backed woodpecker
I observed a black-backed woodpecker working on a tree adjacent to the Clearwater Road in Cook County. The light was dim and I was not carrying bins so I don't know if it had the yellow forehead patch. First black-backed I have seen in about 4 years. I will email again if I re-locate it. [mou-net] Thanks to MOU at the fair volunteers- shifts are very close to filled
only one shift is without any volunteers: Friday, 8/25 from 5-9. This is the hard shift to fill but it has some advantages. You can enjoy the food and fun of the fair and then rest at the MOU booth and listen to the music. It is usually less windy, cooler and not so busy at night. MOU will pay for your ticket. Three shifts could use one more volunteer: Sunday 8/27 and Monday 8/28 from 5-9 Monday, the last day of the fair- 9/4 from 1-5 and that's all! thanks again Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

Re: [mou-net] State fair open shifts
The fair starts in about two weeks. Many shifts need volunteers. If your schedule allows, volunteer for more than one shift and we will reimburse the price of your tickets. The 5-9 shifts are flexible in that you can close shop when visitors stop coming. In these late days of August, the 5-9 shift ends in the dark. Its an easy shift and putting away the booth means piling stuff inside and on top of the counter and wheeling it into DNR building. Much easier than in the folding table days! Thursday August 27: All shifts filled! Friday, August 28 and Saturday, August 29 need 1 (or 2) volunteers for the 5-9 shift. Sunday August 30: 9-1 and 1-5 both need one or two volunteers Monday August 31: All shifts filled Tuesday September 1: 5-9 one or two volunteers needed Wednesday September 2: 9-1 has one volunteers, one more needed Thursday September 3: 1-5 could use one more volunteer and the 5-9 shift is open for two volunteers Friday September 4: 1-5 one volunteer needed, 5-9 needs one or two volunteers. Saturday September 5: 1-5 needs two volunteers and 5-9 has one volunteer. Sunday September 6 : 9-1 and 1-5 need two volunteers. The 5-9 shift has one volunteer, one more would be welcomed Monday September 7: 9-1 and 1-5 are both open, 5-9 is filled. thanks for considering spending some time at the fair working at the MOU booth. You will be rewarded with the pleasure of talking birds for a few hours. We are the only birding club represented at the fair. The shifts for the first day of the fair (8/27) are filled! A few shifts for the remaining days also have volunteers. With the end of July close and the fair not too far distant, we are asking MOU members and those who subscribe to the list serves to check the calendar and see if a shift or two might work in your schedule. Our set-up and take-down are very much improved over past years. Volunteers report that they enjoy visiting with fair-goers about birds. You do not have to be an expert birder to volunteer at the fair! Beginners very welcome! I have included my telephone number because our internet is in transition and very slow and unreliable. [mou-net] MOU at the state fair 2015 August 27-Sept. 7
Our state fair starts August 27th and continues through Labor Day, September 7th. The Minnesota Ornithologists' Union welcomes volunteers to work at our Minnesota State Fair booth on the DNR campus. Volunteers report back that they really enjoy talking with fair visitors about birds. Our booth set-up and take down have been streamlined with a wheeled cart where everything needed is stored. Because of DNR budget constraints, we no longer receive tickets. We encourage volunteers to purchase their own tickets as a donation to MOU. There will be some money available for reimbursement, especially for those who sign up for multiple shifts. Our Google calendar is up and ready for sign-up. The food vendors are cooking, the fish are in the pool and the animals are in the barns. At the MOU booth the new rolling table (like the Wolf Center's) is ready to go. It should make moving and storing the materials much easier. The full color bird bookmarks are printed and are ready to hand out. We can still use any bird stamps that you want to donate as each year the supply dwindles. (But we do have some new ink pads!) There are a few shifts that have openings. It's a great opportunity to meet fellow birders and share your bird knowledge with the public. In fact you could even volunteer with the MOU President Roy Zimmerman! Remember your entry fee will be covered by our anonymous donor. Here are the open shifts: Friday August 22 5-9 p.m. WE NEED TWO VOLUNTEERS Sunday August 24 5-9 p.m. with Sid Stivland Monday August 25 5-9 p.m. with Roy Zimmerman Tuesday August 26 5-9 p.m. WE NEED TWO VOLUNTEERS Thursday August 28 5-9 p.m. with Roy Zimmerman Friday August 29 5-9 p.m. with Roy Zimmerman Saturday August 30 9-1 with Bill Tefft Saturday August 30 1-5 p.m. with Gordon Andersson Sunday August 31 9 a.m.-1 p.m. with Bill Tefft Sunday August 31 1-5 p.m. with Steve Weston Sunday August 31 5-9 p.m. with Roy Zimmerman Monday September 1 9 a.m.-1 p.m. with Bill Tefft Monday September 1 1-5 p.m. with Bill Tefft Thank you see you at the fair- Jen Vieth Kate Kelnberger Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net [1] Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html [2] Links: -- [1] http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net [2] http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

[mou-net] MOU at the state fair
Thank-you, Volunteers! Most of the shifts that are important to staff have been filled with at least one volunteer. [mou-net] Re-do MOU at the State Fair. Note Google password change
Greetings State Fair volunteers, Hooray! An anonymous donor has offered to pay for tickets for MOU state fair volunteers so we are continuing sign-ups for this year's fair. This is fabulous news for those interested in birding and bird conservation. Our booth has always been very popular with fair goers so we are elated to be able to continue our booth un-interrupted. We are also REALLY streamlining our display. Our booth will be a rollout, lockable cabinet. One piece that one volunteer can take out and put away. While 2 volunteers per shift is always ideal, we realize that it is not always real world. The Google calendar is awaiting your sign up. ***UGH. ***Someone tried logging in from Texas which caused Google to shut things down until we changed our password. The NEW password is il0vemou. Note the letter “o” is replaced with a “zero” in the word LOVE. No caps. Go to: Http://google.com 1 sign in using the red button on the right hand side of your screen. Login/emailname: mouvolunteer Password: il0vemou Please note: As google continues to evolve, there are some steps that are different for some users than in past years. On some screens the button on the google.com screen is blue. It says, “sign In”. On some versions you need to click on the icon of a 9 box grid in the upper right hand side of the screen to get the option to choose “calendar”. 2. Click on the word “calendar” on the black bar along the top of the screen 3. On the calendar screen, you’ll be on today’s date. Use the arrows to jump ahead to the fair dates. 4. Find the shift you want and double-click it. 5. Put your name in the box right after the shift title. 6. Click “save”. Please email your contact information if it has changed or if you are a new volunteer so you can be sent information about your shift. [mou-net] Greetings to loyal State Fair Volunteers
We have once again been invited to host a MOU table on the DNR campus. DNR Budget constraints have made it necessary to eliminate the free tickets for volunteers. As I mentioned in the former announcement, tickets may be obtained before the fair for $10.00. At the gate, the age of the ticket-buyer determines the price of the ticket. We have received a few sign ups on our Google calendar but not enough to cover the many shifts required. July 15 is the closing date. If you are interested in volunteering and are willing to pay your own way to do so, please email me and we will arrange a date that will work. [mou-net] Rejected posting to MOU-NET@LISTS.UMN.EDU
Greetings State Fair volunteers, Once again, the MOU has been invited to promote birds and bird conservation at the Minnesota State Fair (8/21-9/1). There is a change this year; because of budget constraints, the DNR will no longer be able to offer complimentary tickets.Volunteers will pay their own admission. The cost of admission can be reduced by buying a discount ticket at Cub for $10. Those tickets will be available after July 6 and until they are gone. Another way to save is to go to the State Fair website (I googled MN State Fair admission) where posted are various options for discount days. Volunteers who sign up early could choose one of the discount days. In addition, the price of admission could be taken as donation on your tax return because MOU is a non-profit organization. We are hopeful that volunteers who enjoy working at the MOU booth and visiting with fair-goers about birds will continue this great end of summer tradition by signing up to work the MOU booth. Please sign up by July 15; we will have to discontinue our booth at the fair if we do not have enough volunteers signed up by mid-July. Please know that we are looking into other options to cover the cost of the tickets in the future, including foundation grants or corporate sponsors. We learned of the change of policy too late to do anything about it this year. It will be especially helpful for you to email us and indicate whether or not the $10+ cost of a State Fair ticket will influence your decision not to volunteer this year. The Google calendar is ready for sign up.Please feel free to email Jen or me with your shift choice(s) and we will be happy to sign you up. [mou-net] gunflint trail, cook co. feeder birds
Most of the winter we have had 4-6 pine grosbeaks. Today that number doubled to 12 or more. other birds: 35 or more goldfinches, 14 -16 purple finches, and the usual bluejays (5) woodpeckers. Only one nuthatch- that is interesting to me. Also, no redpolls. Canada jays have been scarce but our dog spotted a pair just down the road a half a mile. [mou-net] state fair MOU booth
I had a great time on Friday night and Saturday morning. Kids love the wheel and lots of adults as well. The new old light board was a hit as well. Many would ponder all of the pictures and were very proud when they could name most. I was surprised that many could figure out the Red-eye Vireo just by the name and the eye color! Gave the mentor flyer to many parents ( and kids). Many were interested in hawk ridge and the raptor release. I was convinced that this MOU project is well worth the effort! 2 fox sparrows FOY white throats-one bright, one dull 2 American tree sparrows Hundreds (maybe not, but lots) juncos dozens of redpolls 4 or so grackles a red wing blackbird a couple of pine siskins 3 or so male purple finches and a couple of females New yard bird, questionable joy: a couple of starlings seen Friday and not since New yard bird: a pair of spotted sandpipers totally perplexed with the feeders and the snow and ice and one male cowbird, definitely not joy, which I haven't seen today.
