SSL-Java problem

2002-01-29 Thread Rene Schubert

Hi,

I'm having problems to connect to a secure site that hosts a Java
navigation applet. It works without SSL, though. Both Netscape6.2 (based
on an older Mozilla version) and the latest release Mozilla 0.9.7 fail
to display the applet.

With JRE1.3.1 Mozilla hangs up, when switching from http to https.
With JRE1.4.0Beta I can switch to https once, but switching back to http
kills the entire browser process.

I checked with bugzilla but could not find anything relevant to my case.
Is Mozilla known to be unstable in connection with SSL or is it just me
who runs across this problem with a specific site?

BTW, OS is Win2000.

Thanks in advance,
Rene

Oh, indeed; you're right. I wasn't aware of that.

The errors disappear when removing all the -moz- attributes, though.
(This will probably make the site look different, though)

No, of course not. I have never looked at the stylesheet, and I just
assumed that it was standards-compliant.

Wrong pref, mate. Check the release notes for 0.9.5 or somewhere around
there - the correct pref name is documented.

you certainly could... it's been done:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.0; Windows 2000) Opera 5.12 [en]
is (i think) the default for Opera 5.12

indeed. this is obviously not a good way to go - I haven't used it, but
it appears from their docs that Opera 6 actually identifies itself as
(for example)
Opera/6.0 (Windows XP; U) [en]
by default... but i could be wrong.

True. That's what I don't like about Opera.

No. "Identify as IE" is default, which is like what you mentioned first.
It takes the IE string - which includes "Mozilla 4.0-compatible" and
appends its own version number ("Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.0;
Windows XP) Opera 6.01 [en]" for me).

This one ("Opera/6.01 (Windows XP; U) [en]") is true though when turning
on "Identify as Opera".

Mozilla isn't perfect either. You should read the thread
'proposing changes to "user-agent string"' in

Close NEtscape completely, then FIND "Inbox.msf" and delete the

2002-01-29 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have only recently upgraded my NS4.7 to 6.2. While NS4.7 is still
remain installed on my PC, NS6.2 is having some problem opening special
links ( ie. video, audio... stuff that needs plugins). All I get is a
page of garbage text.

When I check the NS6.2 setting in Preference-Navigator-Helper
Applications-File Types, the only entry is "text/html". But if I look
under Help-About Plug-ins, I see all the installed plug-ins are pointing
to the old NS4.7 Plugins folder. How do I transfer all those "file
types" and "mime types" settings from my NS4.7 over to new NS6.2? Is it
possible? How?

Thx
Henry

I didn't claim so. Mozilla nowhere (afaict) claims to provide the best

I guess this is what themes are for. You might be able to do this by
adding the following code in your userChrome.css

/* Change the background colour of the messages (top right hand
  * pane in 3-pane view) of Mail/News from gray to white.
  */
outliner {
  background-color : white !important;
}

Multiple Users, single Profile - Windows NT

2002-01-29 Thread sigemund

I work in an academic environment, and want to migrate the school from
Netscape 4.78 to Mozilla, or at least have Mozilla as an option on
student computers (this is a High School).

One of the reasons we've used NS 4.78 for so long is because there's
no profile stuff. In this environment, I don't want any of mozilla's
profile selecting options, or anything like that. Just to have one,
unified profile for all users on each machine would be great.

Currently, we run a Novell Network with Windows NT as the machines'
OS. Netscape 4.78 is on the student computers (computer labs,
library, etc.), with Novell's Workstation Manager allowing students to
login on any machine. What that does is creates a Windows NT user
profile, then deletes it on logout. Each machine will have around 30
users login per day.
I know the benefits of profiles, etc., but in this case, is there a
way that I can bypass that, or perhaps set all the users to point to
one specific profile, with options that I have selected?

Perhaps another insight would be helpful -- because each user's
profile is deleted from Windows NT on logout, the Mozilla selections
will be deleted as well. Therefore, every time a user logs in, it
comes up with a "Convert Profile from Netscape" box. I would like to
eliminate that, and have it just use a standard profile that I could
set up and save on the C drive. Any suggestions?

Perhaps I expressed myself badly. I do not expect Moz to cache files
gotten via FTP. I mentioned FTP at all to illustrate that the Moz code in
question was gotten from a known-good location (ftp.mozilla.org).

Thanks.

Um.. I just cutpasted the code thinking you'd change the colour value to
whatever you wanted. Did you try changing the colour to something else?
Right now I have my Mail/News window is filled with a blazing red
background. You need to replace the line

background-color : white !important;

with

background-color : red !important;
or
background-color : #669933 !important; /* an ugly shade of green */
or
background-color : rgb(192,192,192) !important; /* a somewhat gray colour */

See http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_colorsfull.asp for a variety of

Nonono... You didn't understand the purpose of the original topic. What
we want is _alternating_ backgrounds. Line one has white, line two has
light grey, line three has white, line four has light grey, and so on.
This is often used for to be able to easier distinguish between several
lines in a table.

I doubt this is possible simply through CSS, as it would require control
over the affected lines. Every second line is supposed to be light grey.

Thanks for trying though ;-)

I think Sören was being sarcastic :-) I tried it too (after changing the
colour) but it causes a problem (24 hour old build, W2K, Modern theme)
in that when you select a message, then select another, the first
message still shows in the selected colours until you scroll up/down.

Anyway, the original poster was suggesting alternating white/grey lines
not just changing the background colour. Hey, maybe we could make the
default to be alternating red and yellow like the "zebra stripes" in
Windiff ;-)

Navigator <-> Mozilla

2002-01-29 Thread Georg Bremer

Hi

When Mozilla 1.0 is released will Netscape take the code into the
Navigator etc.? Is Netscape fixing the bugs that appear in Mozilla in
their 'own' browser too? Or get Netscape the fixes from Mozilla? Or in
which way are Mozilla and Netscape are working together?
Im asking because Netscape is beyond Mozillas development state. Maybe
Netscape just dont want to annoy ppl with weekly releases, Im not sure.

At the moment there are just two stupid reasons why Im using N6.2 and
not mozillas newest release: I like the "Fog City" theme (which didnt
work with Mozilla) and the Netscape Logo, just because its an old rival
of MS.

You don't. You copy the plugins from your NS4.x plugins folder to the

Mozilla is always evolving. The way it works is this:
Mozilla goes along happily doing nightlys and having milestones and
everyone works on the Mozilla trunk. At some point, the Netscape people
say "Hey, let's get Netscape 6.2 out the door!", and Netscape branches
off from the next milestone (in the case of 6.2, Mozilla .9.4). They do
work to fix any major issues, add things like Netscape IM, Webmail, etc,
and they release Netscape 6.2. Then they go back to working on the main
mozilla trunk again. It's weird, because most programs do something
like:

Version 1.0 -> Version 1.1 -> version 1.2, etc.  The code from 1.1 is
the same as 1.0, it's just been updated. Netscape 6.1 is not really the
same kind of upgrade from 6.0. 6.0 was taken off the Mozilla trunk and
released. Then like 6 months later, 6.1 was taken off the trunk and
released. 6.0 itself wasn't really upgraded to 6.1, if you get what I'm
saying. If not, nevermind this whole paragraph

While i'm sure the majority of the people watching this list is more
qualified to answer this, I'll try to save some of their time.

Netscape and Mozilla use the same codebase. When Netscape feels it's
time for a new release they make a copy of the codebase (a branch off the
trunk) and continue developement on that branch until it's considered
release ready. They release a new Netscape build and eventually discard the
branch (often taking along bugfixes and applying them back to the branch)
and continue developement on the trunk.

Most of the time Netscape programmers and 'Mozilla' (actually, read that as
'all the other developers from EOne (sp?), Redhat, Beonix (sp again? heh)..
etc) programmers work on mozilla side by side, each with their own
priorities set by the company they work for, or just bugs they want to see
fixed.

In the end everyone is working towards the same goal: making Mozilla a good
browser/app suite/platform.

Netscape founded Mozilla.org, but Mozilla is now a product on which
other browsers - like Netscape, Skipstone, Galeon, and others - are based.

?!

Netscape has some extra features, true, but Mozilla is a lot more
advanced. The most recent Netscape release is based on Mozilla 0.9.4.1.
Mozilla 0.9.8 is nearly finished already though.

> Maybe Netscape just dont want to annoy ppl with weekly releases, Im not sure.

Mozilla milestones are usually released in a five-week-cycle. See the
Roadmap page.

Mozilla is not an end-user browser, but more of a development platform.
Thus, it's released quite regularly.

APIs - on which Themes are based - have yet to receive a feature

There isn't much explanation at that link so I could be wrong, but I am
sure that Intel just has a representation of 'I' trademarked(or else why
would they be applying for another patent on the letter 'I'?). A lot of
companies do this and it doesn't mean that I can't start a computer
company and have my logo being a stylized I and trademark, it just can't
look identical to Intel's. Likewise, MacZilla doesn't have a trademark
on every green dinosaur, they merely have a trademark on their specific
representaion of a green dinosaur.

Standard IANAL disclaimer...

I'm pretty sure that trademark is not valid. There is that trademark
with the emoticon (was it ";-)"?) which iirc wasn't valid either. And
then there's the "Deutsche Telekom" (German Telecom, our former
monopolist telecom company) who tried to trademark both magenta (yes,
the color. they use it all over their subsidiaries) and 'T' (big 'T'
letter, same reason), and iirc failed too.

others posted. If you don't understand, I can try to explain in German
(I think you're German - both your name and your e-mail address suggest
it). ("trunk" is "[Baum]stamm" and "branch" is "Zweig". So you have a
thick trunk, of which every few weeks branches are built, e.g.
"Abzweigungen". From them, actual end-user products like Netscape 6.2
are made. The same time though, trunk development / evolution goes on.
So in a way, the branch-based product is always behind.)

The interface of Mozilla is based on XUL (XML UI Language). As the name
suggests, it's an XML-based language. The presentation is mainly done
with CSS, and the functionality with JavaScript. So if you are good in
one of these, and once you've learned about how to get involved with
Mozilla (took me _ages_ ;-) and I'm still far from a real contributor),
you might be able to help more than you think you can.

Help request for rendered objects in Gecko

2002-01-29 Thread Nicola Baldini

Hi all,

i need to know if it is possible to get the complete list of objects
rendered by mozilla layout with their width, height and absolute
position in the page (i.e. the rectagle containing a portion of text or
an image).

If yes where can I find some examples of this?

Thanks in advance.

HOW TO BE $50,000$ RICHER DURING 20-60 DAYS!!!

2002-01-29 Thread Alex Karchon

HOW TO BE $50,000$ RICHER DURING 20-60
DAYS!!!

A while back, I was browsing these newsgroups, just
like you are now, andcame across an article similar to this that said you
could make thousands ofCASH within weeks with only an initial investment of
$6.00 plus stamps! So Ithought, "Yeah, right, this must be a scam!" But like
most of us I wascurious and kept reading. It said that if you send $1.00 to
each of the 6names and addresses listed in the article, you could make
thousandsin a very short period of time. You then place your own name and
address atthe bottom of the list at #6, and post the article to at least
300newsgroups. (There are about 32,000 of them out there and that's quite
alarge market pool). No catch, that was it. Even though the investment was
ameasly $6, I had three questions that needed to be answered before I
couldget involved in this sort of thing.

1. IS THIS REALLY LEGAL?I called a lawyer first.
The lawyer was a little sceptical that I wouldactually make any CASH but he
said it WAS LEGAL if I wanted to try it. Itold him it sounded a lot like a
chainletter but the details of the system (SEE BELOW) actually made it
alegitimate legal business.

2. IS OK WITH THE POST OFFICE OR IS IT MAIL FRAUD?I
called them: 1-800-725-2161 and they confirmedTHIS IS ABSOLUTELY LEGAL!(See
18, h sections1302 NS 1341 of Postal Lottery Laws). This clarifies
theprogram of collecting names and addresses for a mailing
list.

3. IS IT RIGHT?Well, everyone who sends me a buck
has a good chance of getting A LOT ofCASH ... a much better chance than
buying a lottery ticket!!!

So, having these questions answered, I invested EXACTLY
$7.92 ... six $1.00bills and six 32 cent postage stamps ... and boy am I
glad I did!!!Within 7 days, I started getting CASH in the mail! I was
shocked! I figuredit would end soon and didn't give it another thought. But
the CASH continuedcoming in. In my first week I made between $20 to
$30.By the end of the second week I had a made a total of $1,000.00. In
thethird week I had over $10,000.00 and it was still growing. This is now
myfourth week and I have made a total of just over $42,000 and it's
stillcoming in .It's certainly worth $6.00 and 6 stamps
!!!

Also, make sure you print a copy of this article NOW,
so you can get theinformation off of it as you need it. I promise you that
if you follow thedirections exactly, that you will start making more CASH
than you thoughtpossible by doing something so easy!

Suggestion: Read this entire message carefully! (print
it out or downloadit.) Follow the simple directions and watch the CASH come
in! It's easy. It's legal. And, your investment is only $6.00 (Plus
postage)

IMPORTANT: This is not a rip-off; it is not indecent;
it is not illegal; andit is virtually no risk - it really works If all
of the followinginstructions are adhered to, you will receive extraordinary
dividends.

PLEASE NOTE:Please follow these directions EXACTLY,
and $50,000 or more can be yours in20 to 60 days. This program remains
successful because of the honesty andintegrity of theparticipants.
Please continue its success by carefully adhering to theinstructions. You
will now become part of the Mail Order business. In this business
yourproduct is not solid and tangible, it's a service. You are in the
businessof developing Mailing Lists. Many large corporations are happy to
pay bigbucks for quality lists. However, the CASH made from the mailing
lists issecondary to the income which is made from people like you and me
asking tobe included in that list.

Here are the 4 easy steps to success:STEP 1: Get 6
separate pieces of paper and write the following on each pieceof paper
"PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST." Now get 6 US $1.00 bills andplace ONE
inside EACH of the 6 pieces of paper so the bill will not be seenthrough the
envelope (to prevent thievery). Place one paper in each of the 6envelopes
and seal them. You should now have 6 sealed envelopes, each with apiece of
paper stating the above phrase, your name and address, and a $1.00bill. What
you are doing is creating a service. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY LEGAL!You are
requesting a legitimate service and you are paying for it! Like mostof us I
was a little skeptical and a little worried about the legal aspectsof it
all. So I checked it out with the U.S. Post Office (1-800-725-2161)and they
confirmed that it is indeed legal!

Mail the 6 envelopes to the following
addresses:

#1) Robert SalamonTrska Cesta 823254
PodcetrtekSlovenia, Europe

#2) Ian Leask9a Pitt LaneLerwick,

#5) Parnell Russ870 Wharton Rd.Kerrville, Tx
78028USA

#6) Alex Karchon933 Coldspring Dr.Northville,
MI 48167USA

STEP 2: Now take the #1 name off the list that you see
above, move the othernames up (6 becomes 5, 5 becomes

2002-01-29 Thread Martin Poirier

I don't see it too on Win98SE, mozilla trunk builds 20020126, 20020127,
20020128 and 20020129. What I tried to solve the problem:

Enable quicklaunch (usually disabled on my machine, but I guess it must
be enabled to see an icon).
Disable password encryption (I'm not sure if the feature would work if
someone is using encryption to protect sensitive data)
Trying with a new profile.

Nothing solved the problem. I wonder what happens with this feature, but
we're not alone, others reported this problem in

http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=119344
and
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18729

but nobody helped us so far.

about the mozilla session history

2002-01-29 Thread SARA HUSSEIN

hello,

we are University students and would like to work on Mozilla for our
upcoming project. Our project will be to make some modifications with the
back button of mozilla. We are still reading documentation and using
the cross referencer to lead us into that direction. Do you quite possibly
know where we can find that code??

-as well, perhaps where the linked list of the frames/session history are
declared and implemented?

-What does the docSHell tree architecture have to do with the session
history?

thank you

I don't think there's any plans ATM, the mozilla suite itself is fairly
processor/memory intensive even for desktops. The gecko core, however,
could probably be ported without great difficulty, stripped down, and
stuck in a PDA.

Tasks>tools>DOMInspector. If you installed the DOM inspector, you can
get all the info you need to know by firing it up, loading up a page
(open a browser window, navigate to the page you want, copy/paste the
url into the DOMInspector URLBar). The objects show up as a tree, you
can either navigate that tree or click the button just below the file
menu, which is "jump to whatever is clicked on". Beware clicking on
links, though, the browser window at the bottom of the window is fully
functional and there is no way of going back. The upper right pane can
have its contents changed, the most interesting to you will be "Computed
Style" and "CSS Style Rules".

Somebody more qualified to answer this can help you better, but here's
my layman's view on that particular aspect. First, if you haven't found
www.xulplanet.com it's probably the best source of introductory info to
all things not involving the underlying C++ architecture (which you seem
to be more interested in). I find that the best way to trace something
is to find the XUL for it, then trace it backwards in lxr till I find
the soruce. The best place to get answers to your questions is on
irc://moznet/ on the #mozilla channel. All the developers hang out
there, and they're usually quite helpful.

With that said, I believe that history is implemented as an RDF
structure (you can read about it at xulplanet) and can be interfaced
using JavaScript from the front end. That's about it :]

I am having another problem. My menu, location bar, links bar, and
