Just a heads-up that you can utilize OMS in Azure for free to grab all of this
data, chug through it, and tell you which apps won't work in Windows 10, which
ones will be upgrade blocks, etc. It also integrates into ConfigMgr with a
nice dashboard and the ability to build collections off of that data.

[mssms] RE: 1709 Issues

2018-01-22 Thread Enley, Carl
Thanks for the reply. I have been working the issues with the MS support team.
I have been told that my issue related to Outlook search as well as the Excel
error when sending to email is a bug in the 1709 Fall Creators update. It
appears the Windows upgrade is removing Office registry keys, he could not
provide any further information than that as the information is very new and
nothing has been officially confirmed as of yet.

I was told the issue was not present in the 1703 build, because we got such a
late start we decided to go to 1709 instead of 1703...maybe we should re-think
our decision.

Outlook profile. We haven't gotten very far in pursuing it since 1709 is still

have a much bigger priority.

Subject: [mssms] 1709 Issues

We are currently starting to pilot the 1709 update to our users and have
started to notice a few issues, I am curious if anyone else is seeing the same
problems we are.

We are using 1709 Enterprise and SCCM 1706 task sequence to deploy, we have
Office 2016 .msi version installed.

1 - After upgrading to 1709 our users are having search issues with Outlook
2016, very similar to the issues last June when the security patch broke the
search function. Basically when they search they have a message saying
"Something went wrong and your search couldn't be completed", results are
retuned but they appear to be missing some items. I was able to fix the issue
by deleting the users .OST file and performing an Office repair, neither one by
itself would fix the issue. This is really not a great solution as our users
have pretty large .OST files and some of them are connected via slow WAN links.

Seems I may not be alone -

2 - After upgrading to 1709 when a user is in Excel 2016 and they use the File
> Share > Email to send the workbook via email they receive the following error
" General mail failure. Quit Excel, restart the mail system and try again".
The only way to fic this is to delete the MAPI32.DLL file from C:\Program Files
(x86)\Common Files\system\MSMAPI\1033\ directory.

3 - My last issue is more of a product issue / feature request. While
performing the 1709 upgrade over a VPN when the first reboot occurs the client
loses contact with the MGT point, the task sequence continues to run and
because I have the content downloaded before running the install succeeds and
life is good. The problem with this is that the client does not queue up the
status messages to be sent upon next connection to the network so our reporting
is not reliable, we have no idea if the user is up to date via the monitoring
tab...it gets messy as the systems stay in the "In progress" state.

I guess in an ideal world every user would be in an office somewhere connected
to the corporate LAN while performing the feature updates but that is just not
feasible in our environment as we have many road warriors and sales folks. I
suppose some type of cloud / DMZ / IBCM type solution would help the situation
but ideally I would expect the status messages to remain client side until the
next time it connects to the MGT point and then send them up. Does anyone know
of a script or something that could be run to re-send the task sequence status
messages?

*Rant on/ - I have premiere support so I opened a ticket regarding the issues I
am having, still waiting on response from MS but what I find ridiculous is that
I have to open up 3 different tickets. So rather than working with one support
rep I now have to mage 3 different support reps wanting to setup time to

It's been a running joke with our PFE, I emphatically require him to be
available as it will FAIL. Oh.. no, it will be better this time Ring,
Ring... it failed...

The last time we upgraded to 1706 the PFE setup some of the product engineers
to be present, so I went to MS building, sat in a conference room with my
screen projected on the wall as I kicked off the process that I knew would
fail...
The Product engineers were called into the room several times as it puked many
steps through the process... and hmmm FAIL... uh... most of that upgrade was
done by the Product Engineers...

I believe in 1710 there are several enhancements as a result of their hands on

Wow. We've had glitches or bumps in the road--but nothing ever earth
shattering. and I think only for paranoia (turned out we didn't need them
anyway) we had our PFEs available when we upgraded from cm12 to current branch.
Otherwise... nothing where the system was "down" or "unusable" during or after
an upgrade.

We do of course have to do pre-announced change windows, when the system will
be down for upgrading, with a detailed checklist and step-by-step checks to
confirm all is well post-upgrade. and yes, that Change does have to be
approved by the-powers-that-be. We just did 1706 to 1710 2 weeks ago (the
infrastructure, not all clients immediately) we were done in 9 hours. It would
have only taken 7.5 hrs... but again--some external thing we didn't know to
block was locking something the upgrade wanted to have exclusive rights to.
had to find and kill it. (we now have a step in our checklist to explicitly
look for and kill if found during upgrades)

That included the CAS, Primary Sites, all the other role servers (MP/DP/SUPs
etc), and a preventative reboot before... and a "we might as well" reboot after
on all the infrastructure servers, just in case one was needed. We'd rather
reboot on a Saturday than figure out a reboot is needed mid-day Monday. Also
included updating to the latest ADK, and the console instances hosted on Citrix.

Hello All,

As we start to leverage SCCM more and more for patching servers I am starting
to manually go through and see that a number of servers are reporting back
compliant but do not have patches in the SUG installed. I keep finding more and
more servers like this. Right now it seems to be mostly 2012 servers. I also
find some servers where I have another weird issue that some of the patches in
my 2012 SUG applied but most of them have not yet these servers reported back
compliant.

The biggest consistent I am finding when looking through the logs is errors in
the cbs.log like this.

2017-11-30 10:14:11, Info CBSSQM: Failed to start upload
with file pattern: C:\Windows\servicing\sqm\*_std.sqm, flags: 0x2 [HRESULT =

sample upload. [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]
2017-11-30 10:14:11, Info CBSSQM: Warning: Failed to
upload all unsent reports. [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]

Or these.

search [HRESULT = 0x8024500c - Unknown Error]
2017-11-29 11:06:36, Info CBSFailed to search Windows

2017-11-29 11:06:36, Info CBSFailed to enumerate cloud
capabilities [HRESULT = 0x800f0906 - CBS_E_DOWNLOAD_FAILURE]

The WUAHandler, UpdatesDeployment, ScanAgent logs are not coming back with
anything that stands out.

I have tried the typical steps of resetting windows update components, sfc
/scannow, dism cleanup options both manually and using the Reset Windows Update
Tool. I tried installing the latest windows update agent but received the
message this is not applicable to your system which is strange. The WSUS
environment has been completely rebuilt using Server 2016 and redoing the DB in
SQL so everything is new.

Is there a way to reset the reporting these servers are sending to the SCCM
server? I tried using right click tools and the option, "Send Unsent State
Messages" and "State Message Cache Cleanup" but that doesn't seem to change
what is reported back.

Thanks!
Chris

2017-06-22 Thread Enley, Carl
Let me know what happens when you disable it. I disabled mine and then
performed a full sync thinking it would reduce the package size back to
pre-express updates but it did not. I was actually going to ask the question to
this group or reddit/sccm to try and understand how I get back to my normal
package size.

That’s unfortunate to hear. So you think I should just turn off this setting
until future notice? Like Carl said, my package sizes jumped up to about 25GB
per month so if those express updates aren’t being used properly, I’ll disable
it.

We’re on client version 5.00.8498.1008. I do not have the 1702 Hotfix Rollup
installed yet.

[mssms] RE: SW Updates on computers with McAfee Drive Encryption

2017-06-14 Thread Enley, Carl
So I don't use it for patching but I do use it in my OS upgrade task sequences.
The 3rd party disk encryption has been our biggest headache with the OS
upgrades...luckily McAfee has provided some tools so that we can inject drivers
and disable pre boot authentication until the task sequence is finished. The
autoboot utility works very well as we are using it, disable pre boot in the
beginning and the last step is to re enable pre boot.

If you figure out a way to do it with patching I would be very interested.

Garth thanks for taking the time to explain this to me.

I guess what I really want is a way (Sql or WQL) to select a collection of
computers and from there output the computer name, primary user assigned to
that device and their email address. I am surprised this is not natively
possible from within the console as it seems that it would save a bunch of
time. I am okay with either SSMS or creating SSRS report to get this done, I
just don't have the expertise to start from scratch.

You can't take a SQL query and use it within the CM console, they are two
different (SQL vs WQL) languages.

What you are asking to do make a lot more sense to do in SSMS or even a SSRS
reporting than in CM console. The CM console will be almost impossible to do
what you want.

Yes you can get the primary user (PU) or top console user (TCU) for every
computer, I was just giving you a starting point. There are ton of SQL examples
on the web for both TCU and PU.

I always recommend that you start with the basic details you want for you SQL
query then add to your query until you are happy with it. As such, What exactly
is the most basic details that you want (ignore email and TCP/PU for now), that
is the query you should write in SSMS. Once you have that add TCP/PU, then
email.

I understand the initial download is larger and I am okay with that, my patch

accurate. My issue is the time that it is taking to install the cumulative
update, it is taking almost 3+ hours on my test machines. The machines are all
W10 1607 with the latest April update applied, everything in the log files

Is anyone else experiencing very long install times using the express install

Small thing, but could it be that your Software Center was not updated with the
latest information on your task sequence deployment?

During testing, I usually add a number or letter to the end of the Task
Sequence name so that when I go to the Software Center I am sure I have the
latest changes.

Here are the steps I took to test this - I created a new OS Upgrade task

sure the check box was in this is a high impact task sequence. I then deployed
the task sequence to a client expecting to see the custom Software center
properties settings as well as the custom user notification text when I kicked
off the task sequence. Instead I saw all of the default values in Software

We are looking into this now and there is a requirement for Microsoft

find any mention of the cost of adding OMS, specifically the log analytics,
required for Upgrade Readiness/Upgrade Analytics Connector in ConfigMgr.

We have an Office365 tenancy but no Azure AD etc. so I was wondering if anyone

Another question – If I stand up another SQL server to host a replica of the CM
database would the SQL license be covered by CM or would I need to buy another
SQL license? I would only host the replica copy of the CM database on this
second SQL install.

I can think of a few good reasons to have the replicated CM database but need
to understand if there is a cost involved. My thought is I could use this extra
CM database to allow others to query against it as suggested in this thread. I
also thought I may be able to use it for the test DB upgrade routine before I
update CM versions. The final thought I had was we were looking at the SCCM
power BI templates and it appears to require a second SQL server either local

Subject: [mssms] SQL Query question / best practice

I am curious is anyone has any thoughts / suggestions surrounding 3rd party
applications / tools running queries directly against the SCCM SQL database.

In my organization depending upon the company we have a few different asset
management systems some are home brewed and others are 3rd party (manage
engine) vendors. One of our biggest challenges is keeping all of our inventory
/ asset management systems in “sync” so to speak. I have been approached by a
few different departments / companies that would like to run queries directly
against the SCCM SQL instance rather than use any type of built in reports /
queries. They would like to automate the export of client information in their
home grown tool without changing their process to include running canned
reports out of the console or website. I offered to provide subscriptions to
those reports they feel would be valuable but was told it would require a
change to their current process they were not prepared to make.

So my thought is it should be no problem to provide them read only access to
the database but my real concern is surrounding performance. I don’t want
someone running a poorly written SQL query against the database and possibly
slowing down the system speed. When I suggested this could possibly happen I
was assured by the developers that they are very experienced in writing SQL
queries and this would not happen….yadda, yadda, yadda.

Thanks for any suggestions.

1. What version of CM are you using?

2. Do you use RBA? Aka will queries need to be RBA compliant?

3. What version of SQL are you using?

I am curious is anyone has any thoughts / suggestions surrounding 3rd party
applications / tools running queries directly against the SCCM SQL database.

In my organization depending upon the company we have a few different asset
management systems some are home brewed and others are 3rd party (manage
engine) vendors. One of our biggest challenges is keeping all of our inventory
/ asset management systems in "sync" so to speak.

I don't want
someone running a poorly written SQL query against the database and possibly
slowing down the system speed. When I suggested this could possibly happen I
was assured by the developers that they are very experienced in writing SQL
queries and this would not happenyadda, yadda, yadda.

Thanks for any suggestions.

[mssms] RE: November Security Only Update

2016-11-09 Thread Enley, Carl
Check to see if your SUP configuration is set to expire superseded updates
immediately. I had to go in and set mine to expire them in 2 months and then
re-sync my SUP to get the security only updates to show. I also had to go in to
my ADR's and remove the filter on superseded=NO.

This seems like a big mess

All,

Has anyone noticed the November, 2016 Security Only Update for Windows 7
x64-based Systems (KB197867) is showing superseded already in SCCM? I believe
this is because the Monthly Roll-up is also published, superseding the Security
Only update. Real nice!

Can you deploy superseded updates from SCCM? Don't know that I've ever tried. I
typically will remove superseded updates from SUGs on a regular basis.

Thank you,

Brian

Good point! Also, I was thinking about this last night (yeah, I'm a dork). You
could easily just replace the extension value in the existing file (instead of
creating a completely new one) with something like this:

# Get Active Directory information for current user (Thanks Freddy!)
$UserName = $env:username
$Filter = "(&(objectCategory=User)(samAccountName=$UserName))"
$Searcher = New-Object System.DirectoryServices.DirectorySearcher
$Searcher.Filter = $Filter
$ADUserPath = $Searcher.FindOne()
$ADUser = $ADUserPath.GetDirectoryEntry()
$ADTelePhoneNumber = $ADUser.telephoneNumber

#Replace value in config file
(Get-Content c:\scripts\test.txt) -replace '\[EXTENSION\]', $ADTelePhoneNumber
| Set-Content c:\scripts\test.txt

Does that not require RSAT being installed on each client computer?
You might be better off replacing the first two lines with something like this:
# Get Active Directory information for current user
$UserName = $env:username
$Filter = "(&(objectCategory=User)(samAccountName=$UserName))"
$Searcher = New-Object System.DirectoryServices.DirectorySearcher
$Searcher.Filter = $Filter
$ADUserPath = $Searcher.FindOne()
$ADUser = $ADUserPath.GetDirectoryEntry()
$ADTelePhoneNumber = $ADUser.telephoneNumber

You can clean that up and change variables to fit with your script. Just
grabbed this off my Outlook Signatures script that runs on each client computer
as users to build their signatures from AD attributes.

Freddy

Here's some more. I'm just tinkering, I'm sure there's a PowerShell expert or
50 on this list that could come up with something better. But this would let
you build the config file on the fly.

Import-Module ActiveDirectory
$phone = Get-ADUser -Identity $env:USERNAME -Properties * | Select-Object
-ExpandProperty TelephoneNumber

$text = "First Line: Settings Here"
$text = $text + "`r`n"
$text = $text + "Second Line: Settings Here"
$text = $text + "`r`n"
$text = $text + "Extenstion: "
$text = $text + $phone
$text | Out-File C:\Scripts\test.txt

The "`r`n" is a CR-LF.

Here's some basic stuff to get you started. You could read the logged in user
and search their AD user record:

Import-Module ActiveDirectory
Get-ADUser -Identity $env:USERNAME -Properties * | Select-Object
-ExpandProperty TelephoneNumber | Out-File C:\Scripts\Config.txt

This writes the phone number to a text file. I'm sure you could manipulate this
to create the config file you want.

Deploying Avaya soft phone package to my end users - package, install

sip information and a few other static values. I have no problem updating that
file and copying it to that location during the package deployment but there is
one user configured setting that is not static and I cannot set it during
deployment and that is the users phone extension. Obviously every user has a
unique phone extension so the information is different for each user that
installs the package, it is easy enough to have them fill in the information
when the application is launched BUT I like to automate stuff if at all
possible. :)

So here is my question...is it possible that during the install of the package
maybe as a dependency (this is how I am copying the config files to the user
directory - package installs as "system" file copy as "user") I could have a
PowerShell script that queries AD for the phone extension of the logged on user
and inserts it into the config file? Has anyone written a script to query AD
attributes and insert them into a text file replacing a current value?

Thanks for any tips / advice.

[mssms] SCCM 2007 Migrate to new Hardware -

2015-04-08 Thread Enley, Carl
I have been approached with a project to migrate our existing SCCM 2007 R2
environment to new Server hardware. We are currently running on Server 2003 and
need to get to 2008R2 before EOL in June\July. I suppose a in place upgrade is
not supported? I have suggested time and time again that we should put our
efforts into SCCM 2012 but Mgt has not made a decision and time is running out.

We have 2 primary sites with about 5000 clients and I am looking for a brief
outline of the steps required to perform this upgrade with no loss of data \
production services - patching, software distribution, reporting etc...

Some of my questions surround the following:

* In what order should the upgrade take place ? Primary Parent site
first?

* Can I go from X86 server OS to X64 server OS.

* Physical to Virtual supported

* Sql Server versions, do they need to be the same (2005)

* Drive configuration (Raid levels etc..)

* Are there any gotchas that I should be looking at?

If anyone has performed this task before and you are willing to share some tips
or outline the steps that you have taken I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Yes I agree with both of you…the problem is politics / budget. We do want to go
to 2012 and we want to use a peer 2 peer 3rd party application to eliminate our
BDP’s. The problem is we currently do not have budget approval to do so and we
cannot be out of support on our 2003 Server OS. This is why I am trying to
gather information / others experiences with the process and present Mgt with
the estimated work effort. This work estimate may or may not change the budget
decision but at least we have given them the information needed to make a
decision.

I am sure you can understand my predicament, I would have to assume I am not
alone and others would also benefit from this upgrade\migrate information.

Thanks

I do the same thing (SCCM 2007) all laptops some desktops that cannot be
rebooted (1000+) apply patches during the day silently suppressing any reboots.
Usually natural shutdown / restart attrition allows them to become compliant.
Some users need a reminder but that is just my environment. This has worked for
us for many years, we do use 1E Wakeup and Maint Windows for the other desktops
across our footprint.

I believe you are perfectly describing the software that 1e sells.

What I've done in the past for laptops is to ignore maintenance windows, patch
completely silently and do not reboot. I've never had a single complaint doing
that for 8 years now.

product to schedule a wake up at the start of the next MW if there is a
deferred installation pending.

It would be cool if someone with skillz could write a shim that computes
whether there is a deferred installation waiting for the next MW. The shim
could subscribe to sleep/shutdown event and run just prior to the machine going
to sleep and schedule the computer to wake at the start of the MW if there is a
deferred installation pending.

It doesn’t solve the laptop problem with MWs, but it sure would make them more
reliable for plugged in but sleep enabled computers.

I know you can set the power settings to wake the computer up for the MW, but
there are two problems with that. The first is that the computer will
frequently wake up unnecessarily with no scheduled task to perform. The second
problem is that the go back to sleep timer is usually set to 2 minutes which is
frequently too short for SCCM to discover it has a task to run
