First: When asking, please tell us what version you refer to.
Very often, the correct answer depends on the MySQL version affected.

Second: I won't make a prediction, but I am not aware of any plans to
change that. In what way is it important for you to have a RPM geared
specifically to RHEL 4, as opposed to a generic one ?

MySQL Max Build Policy

2006-07-21 Thread Kaj Arnö

Dear MySQL users,

Starting MySQL 5.1 (1), we’re simplifying life when it comes to the
number of builds for each platform. We will be building only one binary
package for each platform (2): the binary known in MySQL 5.0 as “max”.
The assumption is that users prefer one binary with all options enabled,
rather than having to choose the proper version at install time (or
worse still, rely on others having made the proper choice on their behalf).

And with only one version, there is no need to call it “max”. “The max
version is dead. Long live the max version!“. Not to speak in riddles,
the standard mysqld binary is intended to contain all mysqld-max
features. While 5.1.11 e.g. in Linux (x86) package still has three binaries

mysql-5.1.11-beta-linux-i686/bin/mysqld
mysql-5.1.11-beta-linux-i686/bin/mysqld-debug
mysql-5.1.11-beta-linux-i686/bin/mysqld-max

the plan is to reduce this to two. Already now in 5.1, the only
difference between mysqld and mysqld-max is the BDB table handler. The
only real difference going forward is removing support of BDB, which is
the first step towards removing it also from the source after 5.1.

We think the majority of our users agree that the simplification is
beneficial. This way, MySQL will by default contain MySQL Cluster,
together with all other functionality we deem stable enough to provide
our user base with.

In MySQL 5.0 and earlier, the Standard/Max duality has proven
problematic from the user’s perspective:

- The question “Which package should I install?” is a very common one on
the mailing list.
- There is a limit to the number of flavours a user can decide between,
more flavours is just overwhelming.
- The risk of the user picking the wrong binary and then thinking “this
is not supported” is high.
- As we want customers to try new things, we should see to it that they
already have them installed.

I imagine the user asking himself or herself questions like

- Has my DBA installed the version I want and need?
- Are security functions (such as SSL) available in all binaries?
- Does the Debug version have the extra debug information on top of
Standard or on top of Max?

- Is MySQL Max somehow related to MaxDB? (Footnote: No, it is not)

I won’t hide the fact that our Build team also saves some time by not
providing multiple binaries: We get a shorter turnaround time for
builds, for tests and for uploads to mirrors. And it helps our
commercial Support team, which now needs to ask users to separate
between flavours for versions, and keep track of differences between
flavours.

However, our simplification is not as much about reducing our own build
complexity, as about simplifying life for our user base.

- Fewer choices means less time spent choosing, simpler lists on the Web.
- The user/developer is less dependent on which particular version he
has, when he uses/develops applications based on MySQL.
- The developer does not need to convince his DBA or ISP to upgrade into
a particular flavour of a release.
ISPs and DBAs don’t have to make complex decisions on which flavours to
support.
- Distributors will hopefully pick up our choice of configuration, to
further reduce the number of different MySQL configurations available
(and thereby the confusion).

Like with any decision, we don’t have all the facts at hand. So now is
the time to let us know if we’re on track or not. This can be done on
the forums at http://forums.mysql.com/list.php?3, or on the mailing
lists at http://lists.mysql.com/mysql or as comments to my blog on

http://www.planetmysql.org/kaj/?p=58

Footnotes:
(1) The MySQL 5.1 download pages at
http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/5.1.html say

As we’re working on making some changes to how we will provide binary
distributions of MySQL 5.1, this release currently only provides “Max”
binaries for a few selected platforms as well as the source distributions.

Compare this to the download pages for MySQL 5.0 Community Edition -
Generally Available (GA) Release at
http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/5.0.html where we say

The Standard binaries are recommended for most users

The Max version includes additional features that have not been
exhaustively tested or are not required for general usage. When these
features have matured and proven to be stable, they will be incorporated
into future releases of the Standard binaries. The Max version also, for
most platforms, contains MySQL Cluster storage node, management server
and mysqld/ndb enabling programs.

The Debug binaries have been compiled with extra debug information, and
are not intended for production use, because the included debugging code
may reduce performance.

(2) A separate server binary with additional debugging support enabled
continues to be included.

I answered this here on April 26.

Also, please use exact terminology:
A version is a two- or three-level numeric designator, like 4.1 or
5.0.21.

max is a package, or (coming with 5.1) a server variant.

Also lemme know how the max version is helpful if the installation of mysql on
the clinet machine is to be done easily wihout any hassals and minimal human
intervension

No difference between a max and a standard package in this respect.

This is well covered in the documentation:
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/mysqld-max.html

Also, mysqld-max has the d on its name because its a daemon, a
server, so, no use for it on a machine suppose to be a client. Its
just a version of the server with different options (more features) at
compile time. Joerg, accourding to the page above, he used the correct
terminology, a version has different meanings, one for apps (as you
stated) and another for executables (builds), that is the way Ashwini
mentioned it.

we cannot tell either, as you do not list the versions involved.

Basically, max is standard with some more advanced stuff added,
typically the cluster table handler (aka NDB) and some options
considered experimental (like big tables, big joins etc.).

The exact feature difference varies from version to version, as some of
the experimental features are later considered stable and well-tested
and then get included in the standard server.

The main difference that will remain is the issue of the cluster
handler; and as long as you do not use it, its inclusion in Max does
not make a difference to you.

In short:
Most likely, the difference will not matter for you (for otherwise you
would know about it).

Hi Tom,

Are you using the --quick option?

--quick, -q

This option is useful for dumping large tables. It forces mysqldump to
retrieve rows for a table from the server a row at a time rather than
retrieving the entire row set and buffering it in memory before writing
it out.

From the manual at page

some myisam tables turned read only (MySQL Max 4.1.12)

2005-12-30 Thread Johannes B. Ullrich
Very odd problem. I do have a larger database, with many myisam tables.
A couple days ago, some of them turned 'read only'.

Symptom:

delete from day_48392 where id=28398776259;
ERROR 1036 (HY000): Table 'day_48392' is read only

I checked:

- table file permissions are right ('660 mysql:daemon').
They are the same for all tables
- directory permissions are 700 mysql:daemon
- tables are not packed.

To track this down, I tried:

- copy data from old table to a new table:
  create table x like day_48392;
  insert into x select * day_48392;

table 'x' is now writable and works fine

  drop table day_48392;
  alter table x rename day_48392;

and 'day_49392' is once again read only :-(

- compress/uncompress the table: no luck

- repair the table from within mysql fails (read only)
- repair table from shell with myisamchk works, but
  doesn't fix the problem

- I flushed tables (several times)
- I restarted mysql
- I rebooted the system

So what else ???

Hint:

before this started, I backed up a number of older tables.
In order to back them up, I copied them to a different
partition, marked them '444'. Next, I dropped the tables, and added a
symlink to the backups.

Looks like tables are affected if they existed at the time of the
backup. Tables created after that are fine. The tables that have the
problem where not touched during the backup :-(

The tables are part of a merge table. but dropping the merge table
doesn't help.

Re: [SOLUTION] some myisam tables turned read only (MySQL Max 4.1.12)

2005-12-30 Thread Johannes B. Ullrich

Well, I found the reason for these table becoming 'read only':

These tables where part of a merge table, which included some read only
tables (read only set in file system).

Now even after the merge table was dropped, all member tables stayed
'read only' regardless of their individual file system permissions.

very odd.. a bug?

to recover, you will have to:

- drop the merge table.
- create new tables
- insert the data from the old tables into the new tables
- drop the old tables
- rename the new tables to match the names of the old tables.
- change file system permissions on ALL the tables of the merge tables
- recreate the merge tables...

My collegue the sysadmin usually takes care of keeping the databases
happy. But AFAIK it's a matter of modifying the setting in the .cnf file
and restarting MySQL. I wouldn't let a process do the editing in the

I wouldn't use the InnoDB datafiles in a backup. They are use server
wide for storing InnoDB data. You can use a MySQL dump or the InnoDB hot
backup tool to backup the data easily.

Re: 'Autoextend' datafile - Mysql-Max-4.1.14 - Linux

2005-10-26 Thread Tom Brown

The short answer: no.

http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/4.1/en/innodb-configuration.html states:
The autoextend attribute and those following can be used only for the last
data file in the innodb_data_file_path line. autoextend is available
starting from MySQL 3.23.50 and 4.0.2.

You could use two methods to manage the increasing need for space in your
situation:

1) Use fixed sizes and keep track of the free space.
Use SHOW TABLE STATUS LIKE 'tablename'; and use the `Comment` column which
shows you something like InnoDB free: 5278720 kB. If this number gets too
low, modify your config file and add an extra datafile.

2) Use an autoextend file and make it fixed size if it gets too large.
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/4.1/en/adding-and-removing.html tells you
that you can change an autoextend datafile to a fixed size file by getting
the size, rounding it to the closest multiple of 1024 x 1024 bytes (1MB),
changing the settings in the configuration file in such a way that the
autoextend file is now fixed to the size you calculated and that you added a
new autoextend file.

'Autoextend' datafile - Mysql-Max-4.1.14 - Linux

2005-10-25 Thread Tom Brown

Hi

I need to have a single db that will have in excess of 100gb of data in
it - For this i will need to create more that 1 datafile as the max file
size of linux would be exceeded in this scenerio.

On Oracle you can say that a datafile is x mb in size and it can
autoextend to be x mb - Is this possible in MySQL 4.1.x ? I see that you
can say that each datafile is x mb but that this filesize is created
when the server is started eg if i want 100GB of space available then i
can create 4x25GB files but they have to start at 25GB rather than all
starting at say 1GB and then 'extending' to 25GB. So is it possible for
all datafiles, rather than just the last one, be 'autoextending'

Hope this makes sense

MySQL-Max Mandriva

2005-10-07 Thread matt-nc
I have MySQL 4.1.12 that came on the Mandriva Linux 2006 RC1 CDs. I think
it is probably the Standard rather than the Max version. How can I tell
for sure?

The reason I am asking is because I have the MySQL Tutorial book, published
by MySQL Press and it says that I need the Max version to do all the
lessons in the book.

Installing MySQL version from Mandriva was a no-brainer because it was
already adapted and included in the Mandriva package manager. How complex
would it be to get the Max version from the MySQL web site and get it going
on my machine with Apache and PHP?

If I go that route should I go ahead and get MySQL 5 while I'm at it?

Thanks,
Matt

Hello.

You have links in MySQL message which you should follow. Resolve the

stack trace. I suggest you to switch to 4.1.11. If you are able to make a

repeatable test case you may report a bug. Does the problem remain with

a debug package?

Hi,

We tried to install mysql-max-4.1.10a-pc-linux-gnu-i686 on linux 2.4.30

When I executed the mysql_install_db script , I have these errors:

This could be because you hit a bug. It is also possible that this

  built,

It is possible that mysqld could use up to

   key_buffer_size + (read_buffer_size +

   sort_buffer_size)*max_connections = 225791 K

   bytes of memory

Hope that's ok; if not, decrease some variables in the equation.

It would appear that the package is for the 64-bit OS, even though it is

I had gotten my file from

James,

Sorry about this. Somehow the 64bit tarball was used for this package.

I've fixed it now and uploaded a new 32bit Solaris 2.8 PKG. Note that it
will take a bit to propagate out to the mirrors (probably 8-10 hrs).

Thanks for notifying us about this.

Upgrading from MySQL Max 3.23 to 4.1.x

2004-12-21 Thread Lee Zelyck
Greetings all,
   I am currently running
mysql-max-3.23.54a-sun-solaris2.9 and would like to
upgrade to a 4.1 sparc 64 equivalent. As I'm also
running 'depot' on the same machine that has MySQL, I
wonder what the easiest way to do this upgrade would
be.

I presume that it would be to do a seperate install
and then let depot do the migration. However, if
MySQL provides a simple 'upgrade' I would love to hear
of it.

Thanks!
Lee

Problem Installing MySQL Max

2004-05-24 Thread Lou Olsten
Trying to install MySQL 4.1.1 Max binary using MySQL-Max-4.1.1-0.i386.rpm onto Linux
Fedora version. When I do, I get the following failed dependencies:

libcrypto.so.0.9.6 is needed by MySQL-Max-4.1.1-0
libssl.so.0.9.6 is needed by MySQL-Max-4.1.1-0
libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3 is needed by MySQL-Max-4.1.1-0

But on my system I DOhave:

/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.7a
/libssl.so.0.9.7a

I haven't figured out where to get the libstdc++ one yet, but shouldn't the other two
be fine seeing how they are later versions?

mySQL, mySQL Max and stored procedure support (version problem?)

I'm running:

ps says I'm running mysql-max
mysql21397 0.0 1.7 71216 16064 pts/8 S10:32 0:00
/usr/sbin/mysqld-max

that *should* support stored procedures, shouldn't it?

but this fail

create procedure pippo
begin
  select 1
end

as well as

create procedure 'pippo'
begin
  select 1
end

and many other combination

Is my syntax wrong? am I using the wrong version of mySQL to have SP
support? Should I configure anything to have SP support?
If I'm using the wrong version of mySQL which one has SP support and
is considered the most stable?

thx

But what about Max version?
Docs are not crystal clear.
While it is clearly stated that mySQL started to support SP from
version 5, nothing is said about Max where docs just say it supports
them but it is not clear from which version.

It is even not that clear from which source package should I start
from to have Max or plain mySQL.

I gave a look to SUSE source package of release 4 and it seems that
Max and plain are built from the same tarball.

Since I'm not sure if I have a version that support SP it is difficult
to see if my syntax is wrong or it is a problem of version.

Could anyone post a correct 5 line example of working stored procedure
to test?

Yep but without being sure you've the right software you're always in
doubt if you missed something.

Anyway result was the same. So I've to upgrade.

Any suggestion about which is the way to go to have stored procedure

I was compiling 5.0 right now and I had trouble with relayrotate test.
First passed, second didn't.
Installation script suggest to use --force...
Google doesn't offer any page for relayrotate mysql.

Re: guru needed - large configuration MySQL-Max InnoDB - 4.0.16

2003-11-01 Thread Wendell Dingus
You don't mention CPU type but do mention RedHat 9. Is this on 32-bit x86
hardware or something 64-bit? How do you set innodb_buffer_pool_size to anything
2GB on a 32-bit box if it is? I've got it set to 7GB on a dual Opteron box
with 8GB RAM with great results so far (in testing, go live next week probably).

Hi,

 innodb_data_file_path = ibdata1:2000M;ibdata2:10M:autoextend
 innodb_buffer_pool_size = 6G

it looks like your InnoDB tablespace is less than 2G.
If it is true then IMHO it doesn't make any sense to allocate 6G for
innodb_buffer_pool.
InnoDB won't use it.

Best regards,
Mikhail.

I'd up your buffer sizes - the mysql manual has some clues as to setting

do you mean that InnoDB have no table-size limit?
if size is that important to you get an 64-Bit system an should be able

Thanks.
The InnoDB tablespace size limit is 64 TB. All InnoDB tables are
stored within the tablespace, so this is also the individual
table size limit.

Replication and LOAD DATA INFILE MySQL Max 3.23.56-1

2003-08-04 Thread Richard F. Rebel

Hello,

After recently replicating using the stop databases and copy innodb and
mysql files method, things were fine...

Until the slave thread stopped complaining about duplicate rows after
one of our developers did a LOAD DATA INFILE operation on the master.
Unfortunately the insert's are into a table using AUTO_INCREMENT as well
and this may be compounding the problem.

I have read the docs, but it's sort of unclear, does LOAD DATA INFILE
work in a replicated 3.23.56-1 setup, only under certain circumstances,
or not at all?

Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

From the MySQL/downloads page for 4.0:

The Standard binaries are recommended for most users, and includes the
InnoDB storage engine. The Max version includes additional features such
as the Berkeley DB storage engine and other features that have not been
exhaustively tested or are not required for general usage, such as
user-defined functions (UDFs), and BIG_TABLE support. When these
features have matured and proven to be stable, they will be incorporated

Mysql starts up fine and runs except when I install the MySQL-Max rpm.
When install the rpm I get the following error message:

I wanted the MySQL-Max so I use SSL connections to the server. Anyone
have any ideas what I am doing wrong?

This is done intentionally, to enable the use of User Defined Functions

the dlopen() system call).

Memory usage of MySQL-Max on Rh 8.0 with InnnoDB

2003-03-07 Thread Richard F. Rebel

Hello,

I am running MySQL-Max on RH8.0 on a Dell 1650, 2 proc with 512MB ram.

I am only using InnoDB for databases (40gb) other than the mysql.*.

I have the following relevant memory settings:

set-variable= sort_buffer=2M
set-variable= record_buffer=2M
## For redhat 8.0
set-variable= thread_stack=192k
set-variable= myisam_sort_buffer_size=2M
...
set-variable = innodb_log_buffer_size=30M
set-variable = innodb_buffer_pool_size=396M
set-variable = innodb_additional_mem_pool_size=2M

I don't have anything other than the basic daemons running on this
machine.

Any help here is greatly appreciated.

Mysql-Max dies when remote connection opened

2003-01-08 Thread Per Steinar Iversen

Version: 4.0.8, installed from the RPMs downloaded from the mysql.com
webpages. The server runs RedHat 8.0, all updates installed. The hardware
is a Dell 2650.

Problem: Any connection, using the command line client for example, from
any other node fails even though the access should be allowed. The error
message is:

ERROR 2013: Lost connection to MySQL server during query

On the server side this is logged on the console:

# /usr/bin/mysqld_safe: line 312: 30764 Segmentation fault
$NOHUP_NICENESS $ledir/$MYSQLD $defaults --basedir=$MY_BASEDIR_VERSION
--datadir=$DATADIR $USER_OPTION --pid-file=$pid_file --skip-locking
$err_log 21

The error log contains:

mysqld-max process hanging, pid 30774 - killed

A simple fix is to uninstall the Max rpm:

rpm -e MySQL-Max-4.0.8-0

After restarting the problem goes away and the remote access is allowed.

Something about the Max package seems to be incompatible with RedHat 8.0 ?

MySQL max memory usage on linux/intel

Apologies if this is off topic ... please let me know what a more

Quick question: since there is normally a per-process limit of 4GB on

4gb in an sql server that is only running running 1 instance of the DB

The total size of the DB is 30 GB and several tables are 4GB.

Re: MySQL max memory usage on linux/intel

2002-11-21 Thread Joseph Bueno
You can expect that your operating system will use the remaining
memory as a file cache that will speed up your databases accesses.

We don't have that much memory our dedicated database server, it has
only 2 Gb. mysqld itself is using around 600Mb the rest is used
by the OS mainly for file caching. Since the total size of all
databases is around 1.5 Gb they almost fit in memory and the
server is happily serving around 300 queries/s with 200 concurrent
connections and almost no disk I/O (no reads, just a few write
every 5 seconds).

Hope this helps

Hi all.

I resolved the problem of starting mysql server changing permissions of /tmp
directory to permit user mysql write /tmp/mysql.sock.

But when I start mysql server with /etc/init.d/mysql server start I get
error @HOSTNAME@.

prototipo mysql # /etc/init.d/mysql.server start
/etc/init.d/mysql.server: @HOSTNAME@: command not found

 Hi all.

 I've downloaded mysql-max-3.23.53a-pc-linux-gnu-i686.tar from
 www.mysql.com
and tried to install it on a linux box.

I followed the steps provided at
 http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/Installing_binary.html

shell groupadd mysql (Not really, I have
 a mysql group)
shell useradd -g mysql mysql (Not really, I have a mysql user)
 shell cd /usr/local
 shell gunzip /path/to/mysql-VERSION-OS.tar.gz | tar xvf -
 shell ln -s full-path-to-mysql-VERSION-OS mysql
 shell cd mysql
 shell scripts/mysql_install_db
 shell chown -R root .
 shell chown -R mysql data
 shell chgrp -R mysql .
 shell bin/safe_mysqld --user=mysql

 When I execute bin/safe_mysqld --user=mysql

 prototipo mysql # bin/safe_mysqld --user=mysql
 [1] 948
prototipo mysql # Starting mysqld daemon with databases from
 /usr/local/mysql/data
 021120 12:49:15 mysqld ended

If I look at mysql log:

 021120 11:51:26 mysqld started

weird characters inserted into mysql max 4

2002-11-18 Thread Siomara Pantarotto
Hi,

Can someone help on this question?

I have downloaded and intalled succesfully mysql-max 4.0.4. However, when I
checked the information I stored via insert statements, I noticed weird
characters placed in the positions of letter that have accents. I am storing
information in portuguese and the content stored is not exactly what I am
putting in my sql statement.

Any Ideas?

Thanks

Siomara

MySQL-max-3.23.52-win

2002-10-16 Thread Silmara

I installed MySQL-max-3.23.52-win in the Win98 with the following
configuration

#This File was made using the WinMySQLAdmin 1.4 Tool
#16/10/2002 14:37:55

#Uncomment or Add only the keys that you know how works.
#Read the MySQL Manual for instructions

[WinMySQLadmin]
Server=C:/MYSQL/bin/mysqld-max.exe
user=root

[mysqld]
basedir=C:/MYSQL
datadir=C:/MYSQL/data
innodb_data_home_dir=C:/MYSQL/data
innodb_data_file_path=data_d1:50M:autoextend
innodb_log_group_home_dir=c:/mysql/data
innodb_log_arch_dir=c:/mysql/data
set-variable=key_buffer=32M
set-variable=innodb_buffer_pool_size=32M

but the startup is very slower.
Is it normal?
What's the problem?
Should I use another stableer version?
I want to use Innodb with autoextend.

MySQL-Max-3.23.52-1.i386.rpm is missing many files.

2002-09-21 Thread alg

Description:

I'm trying to install MySQL MAX 3.23.52 (MySQL, with
transactions enabled). My rpm attempts goes like this...

  1. Check for installed MySQL...
   [root@Zeke mysql]# rpm -q -a | fgrep -i mysql
   [root@Zeke mysql]#

  2. Nothing, so I attempt an install...
  [root@Zeke mysql]# rpm -i MySQL-Max-3.23.52-1.i386.rpm

Giving mysqld a couple of seconds to restart
var/tmp/rpm-tmp.34280: /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql: No such file or directory

  QUESTIONS
  1. Why is the mysql start/stop script missing?
  2. In addition, OTHER FILES are missing, as compared to the
 tar/gzip binary:
   mysql-max-3.23.52-pc-linux-gnu-i686.tar.gz

  Thanks in advance.

  /AL

How-To-Repeat:
1. Download the Intel Linux RPM file: MySQL-Max-3.23.52-1.i386.rpm
2. su as root
3. rpm -i MySQL-Max-3.23.52-1.i386.rpm
4. See the error
/etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql: No such file or directory

Fix:
BETTER FIX:
1. Re-build the rpm file for MySQL-Max-3.23.52
2. While you guys are at it, provide the rpm for the other
modules (ask RedHat for help on this, if necessary).

If you want me to do some of the work, I'll volunteer the time.
... Just give me some RH linux box to login to. ... I have
only 1 box at home, which I use to support my consulting
clients, so I can't fool around with the box too much.

WORKAROUND:
1. Install the RPM file, in spite of its problems:
MySQL-Max-3.23.52-1.i386.rpm

2. Install tar/gzip file:
mysql-max-3.23.52-pc-linux-gnu-i686.tar.gz
...This way, other rpm files that depend on MySQL-Max-3.23.52-1
won't have problems (assuming that they are properly installed).

in mysql-max-3.23.52-pc-linux-gnu-i686.tar.gz dist: init/mysqld.server has incompatibility problems with RH Linux

2002-09-21 Thread alg_db

Description:
File: support-files/mysqld.server
This file has problems when run under RH Linux 7.0, and
I suppose in other Linux versions.

How-To-Repeat:
1. Download: mysql-max-3.23.52-pc-linux-gnu-i686.tar.gz
2. Install as per instructions in INSTALL-BINARY .
3. Problems apparent when invoking: mysqld.server start

Fix:
I made the following fixes in my own copy of mysqld.server,
which I checked into RCS. I successfully tested under RH7.0.
(Note: the success only relates to start/stop of mysqld).

You're supposed to install the non-max rpm first, then install the
max rpm. That's why you're seeing so many files missing.

I am new to MySql and am trying to learn PHP in conjunction with MySql. The
webpage that I want to create will benefit from stored procedures. Are
these available with MySqlMax? If so, is it setup the same way as MySql?

Thanks,

Hello,

As of this writing, MySQL doesn't support stored procedures. It will most
probably support them in 4.x versions to come.

However, there are millions of web pages that use PHP in conjunction with
MySQL without stored procs, although they would certainly benefit of them,
but those sites work fine.

Iikka

RE: mysql max

2002-09-05 Thread Iikka Meriläinen

Hello,

Yes, there might be very strong reasons to use the Max version. Most
people are using Max because it has InnoDB support.

I'm not sure about your specific needs, but see this URL for more
guidance on which version to choose:

RE: mysql max

2002-09-05 Thread Gurhan Ozen

Mysql-Max binaries are the binaries complied with InnodB support and
InnoDB tables support transactions. So if you do something that has to
be transaction-based, then you'd use mysql-max.

Difference between MySQL 4 and MySQL Max 4

2002-08-25 Thread Andy Leung

Hi,

Could anyone tell me what are the differences between MySQL 4 and MySQL Max
4, now that MySQL 4 has InnoDB built in as standard? I couldn't find the
answer in the manual or the download section. I'd like to download MySQL
and definitely want InnoDB, but I don't know whether i should go with MySQL
4 or MySQL Max 4. hence my question.

Thanks a lot.

Andy

4.0-max contains BDB tables, MyISAM RAID support, and a few other
odditites. You probably don't need it.

mySQL max connections

2002-07-30 Thread Shane Wright

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi

I have a mySQL database thats taking a bit of a hammering - enough so that the
number of connections spirals up and out of control.

max_connections was originally at the default of 100 - but rising above 50 or
so meant actual throughput dropped so the db never got a chance to keep up
(meaning manually restarting the db). I've lowered max_connections to 40
which at least keeps the db alive.

But, the number of connections keeps rising to and bouncing off this limit -
and for the users that hit it a 'Too many connections' error is given.

Now, I've optimised all the tables and queries as much as is humanely possible
- - and the only way out I can see so far is to have some kind of connection
queue to keep people waiting for the 1/2 second or so until the load spike
drops off (I'd rather have a few slow pages than errors any day).

Is there any way of doing this - I've looked at back_log (the listen()
backlog), but that doesnt really apply.

Short of writing a 'hide-warning-wait-a-bit-and-try-again' chunk in PHP
(sucky!) I'm stuck!

Using persistent connections doesn't stunningly help either - it only gives a
small performance increase. If it makes any odds, the SQL only talks to 3
tables, all are properly indexed and there's enough RAM to keep it all from
swapping.

Any help appreciated, thanks.

HP-UX 11, mysql-max

2002-07-18 Thread Jason Baker

I tried the HP-UX mysql depot from the HP Software Porting Center, but
it doesn't have innodb support.

The mysql-max capability page says that innodb is supported on HP-UX,
though... so presumably somebody, somewhere, has done this already.

When I'm trying to compile with gcc 2.95.3 or with gcc 3.0.1, I get a
missing library (-ldl) when building mysqld, despite configuring with
--disable-shared and --enable-static.

So... I'm game for just about any advice at this point. A depot with
mysqld-max would be ideal, advice on what's going wrong on the link
would be a close second.

Thanks in advance,
 Jason

Subject: HP-UX 11, mysql-max

I tried the HP-UX mysql depot from the HP Software Porting Center, but
 it doesn't have innodb support.

The mysql-max capability page says that innodb is supported on HP-UX,
though... so presumably somebody, somewhere, has done this already.

When I'm trying to compile with gcc 2.95.3 or with gcc 3.0.1, I get a
missing library (-ldl) when building mysqld, despite configuring with
 --disable-shared and --enable-static.

So... I'm game for just about any advice at this point. A depot with
mysqld-max would be ideal, advice on what's going wrong on the link
 would be a close second.

please try

HP-UX downloads

Binary packages (tar.gz)
MySQL 4.0.1-alpha HP-UX 10.20 (6.5M) Download

at http://www.mysql.com/downloads/mysql-4.0.html

Some people also compile Max-3.23 on their own HP-UX computer.

 Thanks in advance,
  Jason

Error in Windows download of MySQL-Max-4.0.2; download MySQL-4.0.2 instead

2002-07-17 Thread Heikki Tuuri

Hi!

There is an error in the Windows download of MySQL-Max-4.0.2. It is a wrong
file, the same as MySQL-Max-4.0.1.

If you do not need BDB tables, please download the Windows version of
MySQL-4.0.2 (without the 'Max') instead.

RE: high level: enabling transactions in mysql-max with WebLogic TX datasource?

2002-07-02 Thread Bert VdB

Hi again,

I really think you should walk yourself through the InnoDB user manual at
http://www.innodb.com/ibman.html
There's a lot of usefull and explanory information in there.

For your question:
ib_arch and ib_logfileX are the logs that InnoDB uses to track
committed transactions
and perform recovery in case of an DataBase crash.

Having all these files in the same directory is kinde messy, maybe you wanne
use a config file like the one at the bottom of my reply.
The kind of logging you need is the one indicated by the log parameter in
the config file.
The binary logging that we use is only usefull if you want to be able to do
recovery for certain time spans.

Also you can start your server manually at the command prompt with
c:\yourmysqldir\bin\mysqld-max-nt --console
This way you will be able to see any (error) messages directly in the
console ...

Have fun, I know I did ;)

Mysql vs MySQL max

2002-07-01 Thread Petre Agenbag

Hi
Probably a stupid question, but which is best to have on ones server,
the old mysql, or max. I.O.W, if you install MAX and never use innodb
or berkeley tables, will it be equivalent to a normal mysql installation
wrt performance and stability?
I'm asking from an ISP's point of view, if that makes any difference (
obviously if from developer it will depend on the needs of the app..)

Thanks

One thing that I find a little confusing is the notion of transactional
behavior in mySQL. I read that it's possible to enable transactions in
mySQL-max, however, it's never really been clear to me exactly what I'm
supposed to do, or whether I have to do anything. If I'm using a
transactional
datasource in WebLogic, on top of mySQL, I need to make sure mySQL supports
that transactional behavior.

Is there a section of the mySQL documentation, or some other documentation,
which explains these issues clearly?

increase mysql max connections over 1024

2002-06-15 Thread Patrick Hsieh

Hello list,

I'd like to increase the number of max connections above 1024 in Linux.
I think I have to increase PTHREAD_THREADS_MAX in

/usr/include/bits/local_lim.h

/* The number of threads per process. */
#define _POSIX_THREAD_THREADS_MAX   64
/* This is the value this implementation supports. */
#define PTHREAD_THREADS_MAX 1024

My question is, what should I do after modify this file. Should I
rebuild mysql-server .deb package again? Or I just set mysql max
connections and restart mysql server?
