Re: [mythtv-users] vonage caller id

2005-01-29 Thread Maverick
I don't know how many people here are using Vonage for phone service. I
have a perl script I hacked up that monitors the sip traffic to the
vonage phone and alerts my mythfrontend via mythnotify to the osd when
there is an incoming call. It shows the caller name and number. This can
be used if you are running a linux firewall and the vonage phone
 traffice passes through it.

Love my vonage, and for that functionality, I'd consider configuring
my myth box with a second nic and route the vonage through it if I
have too! Like the rest, I'm not currently using a linux firewall. :(

How about doing this with tcpdump from the myth box itself? My myth
box actually shares a 10base hub w/ the vonage box, so should be no
reason it can't sniff out the sip...

[mythtv-users] Bootsplash theme for MythTV?

2005-01-29 Thread David Collett
G'day all,
Is anyone using bootsplash?
Does anyone know of a mythtv bootsplash theme?
What about background images (ie. to use as X root image while mfe is
loading)? or any other mythtv artwork which might be useful in
creating a bootsplash theme.

I'm in the 'polishing' stage of my mythbox building software
suspend 2 seems to be working nicely for me, as does nvram-wakeup.
Bootsplash combined with swsusp2 would make for a snappy and
attractive bootup.

[mythtv-users] PCM sound card output and volume control question

2005-01-29 Thread Carl Alexander
I have a setup in which I run digital cables from my Myth box to my AV
receiver, and it is there where I do my D/A conversion and volume
control. My question is, in such a situation how is the linux/Myth
mixer actually controlling the volume? (Which I guess is the same as
asking how is volume regulated on a TOS-link PCM connection?) If I am
playing a ripped CD, is the mixer actually molesting the 16-bit samples
form the raw CD data before sending them out?

What I am getting at is I would like for my digital audio files to be
passed to my AV receiver and Amp untouched. I'm quite happy with this
equipment and don't need a mis-set mixer monkeying around with the
signal in a way that could impact its dynamic range. Is there a way I
can tell myth to completely ignore all mixer settings? There is no
level settings on the digital output of my CD player, why here? I want
to play my audio, not have a drive-by remastering done to it on the way out.

I am immediately concerned with MythMusic since I am playing with that
first, but I can see wanting to extend this to DVD playback, HDTV
playback, etc.

Yes, I see the toggle for pass through of AC-3 audio (which I have set
but haven't really used since I haven't played with MythDVD yet). if
that does what I think it does, I pretty much want that for other
digital sources as well.

   Thanks.

How do you know the problem is HDCP? Why not the much
more common problem of a bad modeline? If your

anything either. For example, make sure you are

That was my first idea too, so I spent several evenings trying to find

I created a wallpaper that uses the background from the theme I'm

I'm using the bootsplash patches on 2.4.27, I found that I couldn't

Re: PVR-250 image quality -- Re: [mythtv-users] TV Wonder Pro

2005-01-29 Thread Cory Papenfuss
I'm curious about this higher quality recordings phrase. I've seen it a
few times,
yet I'm not one to automatically believe that a card does better just because
it does
mpeg 2 compression. (I'm assuming a 150 would have the same quality if one
got
that working.)
It's not the MPEG2 compression that inherently gives it higher
quality recordings. I know some people who have CPU to burn like
capturing with a software card so they can do direct to MPEG4 with
denoising, etc. I looked into this awhile back, and came up with some
interesting conclusions.

The BT878/9 uses a simple notch filter like older NTSC TV's to
separate the Y/C from composite signals. That limits the luma resolution
to less than 3 MHz (as well as above 4.5 MHz, but broadcast won't have any
luma up there). That limits luma lines of resolution to about 240... or
max 4:3 capture at about 320x480. Thus, anything over 352x480 for a
BT878/9 card is silly, since they chip itself can't capture more than
that. I used a resolution test pattern to confirm this with my
bt878-based card.

The hauppauge [23]50 cards use a Philips SAA7115 capture chip.
That has a 2D comb filter, which in perfect circumstances captures *all*
luma information up to the maximum 6 MHz channel width. Broadcast limits
luma to 4.2 MHz (IIRC), but even still, that's 4.2*80=336 analog lines
of resolution. That means a maximum 4:3 capture of 448x480 so
480x480 is about all that broadcast can do. My testing of my 250 with the
same resolution test pattern confirmed that anything over about 540x480 is
silly for a pvr-250.

The hauppauge [15]50 uses the cx88 chip with 10-bit A/D's for
capture. It has a bit more advanced comb filter than the Philips chip,
but that will mainly help some color artifacts. A software-based capture
card based on one of these has the potential to have higher resolution.

Has anyone ever done a direct comparison between a 250 and other ordinary
bt87x capture cards? One would think it was the ultimate quality of the A/D
circuitry that was the key...
As you can probably tell, I've wasted^H^H^H^H^H^H spent a fair bit
of time looking at this. I was really only looking at the softness of
the image, which is a function of the luma resolution. Lots of other
things go into the mess as well (noise susceptibility, color decoder
accuracy, hue/sat, A/D density, scaler filtering, etc) that affect
quality. I'd be willing to argue that a software-based capture card
with a newer video decoder chip (such as the cx88) could have equal/better
quality than the hauppauge cards, but it'll burn up a helluvallotta CPU to
do so.

Hey Andy,

How exactly do you configure which format to transcode to? Is it
merely a case of Myth knowing which format it is going to encode from
(in my DVB-T case, it is MPEG2) and therefore, you don't actually
assign a recording profile option anywhere, you just configure the
MPEG2 entry in Setup TV Playback Recording Profiles?

I have never really understood it and never gotten it to work :(

Cheers,

Hi,

maybe this is slightly offtopic, but for those that have some more telephony
needs around the house, there is quite interesting solution. Asterisk is
open source PBX, that can be easily connected to outside scripts, that can
then do mythnotifies (there are quite some scripts already done for
Misterhouse program) - this setup is also useful for all other events - I
wrote simple plugin for Misterhouse that will send notifies on more
important events

But the real problem with mythnotify is that it won't display if you are not
watching video or live TV. So you won't see all messages all the time.
That's why I use mythtv in combination with Freevo, that does this easily...

[mythtv-users] PVR-350 lost sound in upgrade

2005-01-29 Thread Hugo van der Kooij
Hi,

I was close to getting a working system with the 2.6.9 kernel. Just X did
not work.

Aftre the upgrades of last week it would not work well anymore so I tried
to get things right with the latest kernel and all. After a clash with
some options in my modprobe.conf file I got it back to working and not
ivtv-fb is working as well. (Getting X on there is now an option.)

But in the process I have lost my sound. It is no longer recorded as part
of the stream. I can still get sound from the older recordings so the
playback itself works fine.

I noticed in my syslog these lines:
Jan 29 13:27:45 saruman kernel: ivtv: Encoder revision: 0x02040024
Jan 29 13:27:45 saruman kernel: ivtv: Encoder Firmware is buggy, use version
0x02040011
Jan 29 13:27:45 saruman kernel: ivtv: Decoder revision: 0x02020023

They mave something to do with the problem. The FC3 system is currently
up2date according to apt-get.

Any hints to solve the issue are much appriciated. (I could live without X
for a while but living without sounds in the recording is tough.)

But in the process I have lost my sound. It is no longer recorded as part
of the stream. I can still get sound from the older recordings so the
playback itself works fine.
I noticed in my syslog these lines:

They mave something to do with the problem. The FC3 system is currently

Any hints to solve the issue are much appriciated. (I could live without X
for a while but living without sounds in the recording is tough.)

Tom,

Check your input connections in mythsetup. The input for your HDTV
setting has the starting channel (mine is set at 7.3, which is the
channel number (7.3=freqid 52-5)).

You can also check in mysql:
mysql select * from cardinput;
+-++--++-++---+--+---+
| cardinputid | cardid | sourceid | inputname | externalcommand |
preference | shareable | tunechan | startchan |
+-++--++-++---+--+---+
| 1 | 1 |1 | Television | |
 0 | N | | 7.3 |
| 2 | 2 |2 | S-Video| |
 0 | N | | 206 |
| 3 | 1 |2 | S-Video| |
 0 | N | | 206 |
+-++--++-++---+--+---+

I've got three inputs, but the first one is the HDTV setting. Also,
make sure you are using the programnumber reported by dtvscan for
the minor channel (and not minorchannelnumber). As in my example, my
7.3 = freqid 52-5 where dtvscan reports minorchannelnum = 3 and
programnumber = 5 (myth wants the programnumber).

Hope this helps (it was very confusing to me which of the three
numbers I was supposed to be putting where).

[mythtv-users] Have Lirc IR Blaster, now All I need is help making a lirc.conf...

Hello Everyone,

I have a fully functional Mythbox up and

for my regular cable needs, so I thought now would be a perfect time to try and
get the digital cable working as well.

Currently I am using the Hauppage 350 remote

I have been using the fantastic guide created by Andy (http://comp.uark.edu/~aslong/mythtv.html)

I purchased a Serial IR
Blaster at www.irblaster.info (Great quality, fast and friendly service)

I get to the end of the
guide and I am not able to change channels on my Scientific Atlanta 3200 Digital
Cable box when using the changechannel script.

I am sure this is because
I was using the config for the SA 2000 as it was the only
one available on the lirc.org site.

My question(s):

-
Is there
a way I can use irrecord to learn the SA 3200 remote codes
and make my own lirc.conf?

-
Will
the IR Blaster I purchased work on any Digital box or do you need to make sure
you purchase an IR blaster that is known to work with your digital cable box in
particular?

-
Anyone

for the SA3200 (wishful thinking)?

You have all been a great help in the past and I am hoping that you can
assist me

(Let me know if you need hardware types/configs/output)

Thanks in advance,

[mythtv-users] HOWTO: .nuv-.avi else *without* the database?

2005-01-29 Thread Cory Papenfuss
Here's a situation that only I could get myself info. I formerly
exported PVR-250 captures manually (copy MPEG2 .nuv elsewhere, then delete
from database). Recently, I've been using the NUVSQL portion of
nuvexport to do the same, but a little cleaner. For less important shows,
I wanted to use XViD codec and cut commercials via the mythfrontend. That
part works fine... much reduced filesize from the MPEG2-XViD transcode
from within the MythTV GUI.

Now, I was going to burn the captures onto a disc to play them on
a computer, but I discovered that MPlayer can't play them. I've always
considered MPlayer capable of playing *anything*. Of course Winders can't
play them either.

Apparently, using mythtranscode or nuvexport-AVI directly is the
correct way to do this. Without inserting all this crap back in the
database so these two programs function, can I manually re-wrap the .nuv
into an .avi? I don't want to transcode, just remux into a normal video
container (with the XViD-codec).

Thanks... (from the why must I make everything complicated:)

[mythtv-users] command line to trigger jumppoints

2005-01-29 Thread johnellis

I am trying to do something that should be possible, but I am
running into trouble. Basically, I want to evoke a jumppoint in
mythfrontend from a command line (shell script).

Here is the use case:

I use mythvideo mostly. I have about 50 movies and
growing in there (a lot of HD space). I have a harmony remote that has 6
buttons on an lcd screen. I want to program the buttons for things like
unseen (I added a flag to the mythvideo table), comedy, drama, etc. My
plan was to have the buttons exec a shell script that ran a query like:

Update videometadata set browse = 1 where seen = 0

Then trigger the video browse jumppoint.

I am thinking a simple command line utility that would send
a keypress event to the mythfrontend window would do the trick.

xkeypress F3

Here is what Ive tried:

I found some perl libraries that do stuff like this:

X11::Protocol

X11::SendEvent

But I cant seem to figure out how to write a script
that does this. The main problem seems to be finding the window. I
have no knowledge of perl unfortunately, so Im not even sure if one can
use these types of libraries in shell scripts, anyway.

Any help would be appreciated.

I get to the end of the guide and I am not able to change channels on my

I am sure this is because I was using the config for the SA 2000 as it was

Saving money. I have the $14.99 a month plan with Vonage. All calls are

Love my vonage, and for that functionality, I'd consider configuring

How about doing this with tcpdump from the myth box itself? My myth

If your nic can hear the vonage traffic then it should work. The script
uses pcap to tap into the same functions that tcpdump uses.

Re: [mythtv-users] Have Lirc IR Blaster, now All I need is help making a lirc.conf...

2005-01-29 Thread Mike
you can't use irrecord with your ir blaster - it is not a receiver.
However, it looks like people on this list have reported the explorer
2000 remote file which is on the lirc page works fine with the 3200.
Have you tried that file?
Have you verified you have light coming out of your IR Blaster? An easy
way to do this is with a digital camera or webcam. Hold the short end
of the ir emitting unit opposite the end that the cable is entering
close to the camera lens and you should see the light on the camera
screen when you execute the change channel script.

12% for X
.3% for lirc_dev
1% for top and others

 This is on a 3gig Pentium4 HT with 8meg cache. 1gig memory, NVidia 5200.

Yes, as noted, the HT P4s reprot very good numbers, though there's been
some recent debate off list about whether they are true or not, I'm
still researching it.

Hyperthreading, for those who don't know, means the P4 pretends to
be a dual-processor system by duplicating the registers and various
elements of the ALU, but not the entire CPU by any stretch.

This means that for certain algorithms, ones that are ALU bound rather
than memory bound, and which are multi-threaded, you can see a real
improvement. There is speculation that mpeg encode and decode are
in this category. But it makes it hard to figure out how idle the
processor is because sometimes one of the units may be idle but in
fact it could not really do anything.

So we need to do some tests as follows:
a) Try mpeg decode on a P4 with the non-SMP kernel.
b) Get a benchmark program which can be run niced, to try to
figure out how much spare capacity each different test system
   has while playing 1080i.

Note that this just tells us how much spare capacity there is to run
the benchmark program.

What we care about is the following though:

a) Is there enough spare capacity so that when minor system tasks
take place, they don't make video skip.

b) Is there enough capacity to do that if you also throw in a niced
thread to do commercial elimination or transcode?

c) Do we have enough capacity to handle peak decoding load, since
   that varies with scene complexity.

And also

d) What's the cheapest processor we can get away with and still play
   skip-free 1080i and 720p?

xvmc of course can also change this equation a lot. On my P4, for example,
playing 1080i in mplayer with xvmc, I have seen idle times over 80% which
sounds good and implies one could get away with something much less in
this environment.

isn't what you want.

Try calling the app directly, by using

(Double-check that that's the right path in the Terminal.) I don't

2) i don't have a TV tuner card of any kind right now. not

The 0.16 backend and CVS frontend will refuse to talk to each other,
but since you're not using the TV functionality, that should not
matter. In fact, you don't need a backend running at all if you're only
using the video and music functions. You need the database up and
running, but the backend is superfluous.

The CVS frontend will upgrade the database schema, which could cause
the 0.16 backend to fail or corrupt your data if you try to actually
use it, so it's probably best to shut down the backend entirely. If you
don't use the TV functions, you won't miss it.

 My question(s):

 - Is there a way I can use irrecord to learn the SA 3200 remote

 - Will the IR Blaster I purchased work on any Digital box or do
you need to make sure you purchase an IR blaster that is known to work with
your digital cable box in particular?

 - Anyone have a pre-made lirc.conf for the SA3200 (wishful

[mythtv-users] NUVExport slow export solution

2005-01-29 Thread Eric A. Cottrell
Hello,
I am running a FIC Condor using a Pentium 4 at 2.8 GHz, 1GB of Corsair
DDR-400 CL2 memory, and a Maxtor 300 GB SATA drive. I am using the
PVR-250 card for capture so nuvexport just uses transcode to convert
from mpeg2.

In trying to use NUVExport for export to xvid I found that turning noise
reduction, scaling, etc off made the export faster but I seem to hit a
limit of about 20 Frames per Second (FPS). I decided to try and figure
out any problems.

I am not recording anything today so I turned off Mythbackend and used a
shell logon to get X out of the way. It still peaked at about 20 FPS.
If I ran transcode using the same command line as NUVExport I peaked out
at around 50 FPS! Something was wrong. When I used top to look at the
processes it looked like transcode was breezing along at about 90% or so
when run on it's own but would run at 90% for a few seconds then go down
to 0% for a few seconds when run under nuvexport.

nuvexport gets the output of transcode, parses it, reformats, and prints
it on the screen. It appears if the framerate gets over 20 FPS then
nuvexport can not process every status line guickly. The stdout buffer
fills thus stopping transcode until it empties. Reading the transcode
man page I came across the --print_status option in transcode. I
modified the transcode.pm file in nuvexport to add a --print_status 4
option in the transcode command line. This tells transcode to only
print a status line for every 4 frames processed. This fixed the
problem and increased the rate back to a peak of around 50 FPS when
using nuvexport!

I also noticed nuvexport will still use the -Z option when the output
resolution matches the input resolution. Transcode will still do zoom
when the -Z option is specified with no change in resolution thus
slowing down the frame rate for nothing.

Since my computer has a HT cpu I uncommented the option to specify the
number of CPUs in the transcode.pm file and gained about 1 FPS. I
noticed the first parameter for this option defaults to 10 but the code
in transcode.pm set it to 100. I used 10 and even tried 20 with no
change of framerate so I left it at 10. I assume 100 would be overkill
and may even slow it down like the comment indicated.

Running nuvexport in X with mythbackend running only slowed things down
a few frames per second. I am happier now with the results. A multiple
pass conversion from MPEG2 to XviD now takes around an hour instead of
around two hours.

This sounds a lot like some of the problems I've had. The KDE menus
came back on their own after a restart, so I have no idea if I actually
had to do something to fix them. The no-sound issue turned out to be
that the new ivtv driver needs a special version of the msp3400 driver
named msp3400-ivtv. Put:

alias msp3400 msp3400-ivtv
in your modules.conf and check the logs for 'msp34xx: ivtv version'. (I
can't access my mythtv box right now, so I can't check for the exact
message.)

Oh wait, I just noticed that you said that even old recording has no
sound. You probably have some other sound problem then -- I was getting
some recordings with sound and some without.

Hmm... I guess I don't have anything helpful to add afterall. Sorry
about that. But you'll need that alias thing once you get your other
problems figured out.

Good luck.

[mythtv-users] OT: Hardware question...

2005-01-29 Thread Andrew Close

this is slightly off-topic, but it concerns the MythBox i'm putting together. :)
i finally recieved all my hardware and have assembled it. however, my
PVR-250 doesn't seat completely in the motherboard 'AND' anchor to the
case. if i seat the card all the way then there is about 1/4 inch
between the case and where the card would screw into the case.

my question is: should i just leave the card held only by the PCI
riser? or should i unscrew the motherboard and shim it so that the
PCI card can be fully seated AND screwed into the case? my only
concern with the second option is that when the motherboard heats up
it could be damaged from being warped...

any suggestions?

by the way, the case is the Cooler Master Black MicroATX 5-Bay DeskTop

very sharp!
my motherboard is the ChainTech 7NIF2 (micro-ATX).
the motherboard seems to fit in the case just fine...

Re: [mythtv-users] Recording groups?

2005-01-29 Thread Chris Pinkham
I try to understand and use the recording groups but I could not find a
way to give them a name. I have a recording schedule to record all 'Tom
Jerry' cartoons and I would like to put them into a similar named group
but how do I do that?

Couple of ways actually.

1) When setting up a scheduled recording, you can go to the Storage
Options page and go down to the recording group option and select Create a new
recording group. That will take you to the list of recording groups and
you can create a new one by selecting the create option. Just type the name
in the textbox and cursor down and select OK.

2) You can bring up the INFO menu for a previously recorded program and
select Recording Options then select Change Recording Group. That will
popup a list of all the recording groups along with a textbox which you can
type the name of a group if you wish to create a new one. Select OK and the
selected recording will move to the new group. In current CVS, you can
move multiple items to a new recording group at once by adding the items
to the playlist using either the INFO menu or the / key and then going
to the MENU popup menu and selecting Playlist Options and then selecting
Change Recording Group. That will move all items in the current playlist
to the new recording group you specify.

Wow. Thanks for alerting us to this fatal flaw of
Samsung TV sets. They had been on my short list of

drops Samsung off my approved list.
I'll verify this behavior when I see my Samsung rep next week.
As far as recommendations on plasmas go, my top pick is the Fujitsu
family. Many people knock 'em because of the cost and lack of onboard
tuners and gadgets but in reality, this a plus. No fancy tuners, PIP,
phantom surround widgets, etcetera means more money going into the
quality of the panel and the comprehensive yet simplistic input
switching section. No money wasted on crap I'll never integrate because
it is redundant.

And the panel quality is there. It's no secret in my industry that these
are the finest, most reliable mass produced panels available. Anybody
recall who brought plasma panels to us in the first place? Fujitsu also
leads the industry (understatement) in manufacturing advances of panels.
The motion processing in the 30 and 40 series is very effective, too.

Fortunately for you folks, Fujitsu just lowered SRP on these.
Unfortunately for me, they didn't drop dealer cost worth a darn.

Try other cards and see if they fit. Look at everything to see if
somehow something is wrong. Are you sure its fully seated? At last
resort you could possibly pick up an appropriate washer to go between
the hold down tab and case. You could then get a longer screw. That
way you could hold the card in an almost normal fashion.. You really
shouldn't need to be doing this though.. Did you put the motherboard in
with the mounting hardware provided with the case? I have had good luck
with antec cases, but well I haven't bought any lately. (The last 2
computers I bought were shuttle cubes.) I would avoid changing how the

Re: [mythtv-users] problem with toolchain build for mediamvp

2005-01-29 Thread Rusty McEacharn
avoid cross-compiling mvpmc if possible. use the binary releases.
your geek status will not be as high, but it is a lot easier. the
following is a section from my binary howto:

5 MVPMC
5.1 Obtaining an original dongle.bin
dongle.bin is the name of the Linux kernel and ramdisk that Hauppauge
supplies for the MediaMVP. The mvpmc project creates a new version of
this file, replacing Hauppauge's frontend software with mvpmc.

You will need to place a copy of the Hauppauge-supplied dongle.bin
file into /tftpboot. The mvpmc build procedure will be looking for the
software in that location.

Download the Hauppauge Windows server software from
http://hauppauge.lightpath.net/software/mediamvp/mediamvpsetup_22_22146.exe
and extract the dongle.bin file:

$ cd ~
$ wget
http://hauppauge.lightpath.net/software/mediamvp/mediamvpsetup_22_22146.exe
$ unzip -Ln mediamvpsetup_22_22146.exe dongle.bin
# cp dongle.bin /tftpboot
#exit

5.2 Creating the dongle.bin.mvpmc file
Download a binary release of the mvpmc software to your home directory
from http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/mvpmc/mvpmc-0.1.2-bin.tar.gz?download.
You will have to select your mirror.
$ cd ~
$ wget
http://internap.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/mvpmc/mvpmc-0.1.2-bin.tar.gz
Extract the mvpmc software from the tar.gz file. Then, build a new
dongle file called dongle.bin.mvpmc.
$ tar xvzf mvpmc-0.1.2-bin.tar.gz
$ cd mvpmc-0.1.2-bin
$ ./dongle_build.sh -d /tftpboot/dongle.bin -o dongle.bin.mvpmc
# cp dongle.bin.mvpmc /tftpboot
# exit

5.3 Creating the dongle.bin.mvpmc.config file
When the MediaMVP is booting, it will try to download this file from
the tftp server. If you would like your MediaMVP to automatically
start the mvpmc application, you should make your config file look
something like to use NFS for recording playback. In this case,
192.168.0.2 is the IP address of the master backend server. We are
creating a mount point called /myth/tv and then mounting the directory
using NFS. The -r parameter instructs mvpmc to look for the recordings
in /myth/tv. Since mvpmc can play mp3 files, I mounted /myth/music as
well.

mkdir /myth
mkdir /myth/tv
mkdir /myth/music
/etc/nfsmount.sh 192.168.0.2:/myth/tv /myth/tv
/etc/nfsmount.sh 192.168.0.2:/myth/music /myth/music
/bin/mvpmc -f /etc/helvR10.fnt -s 192.168.0.2 -o svideo -a 4:3 -m ntsc
-r /myth/tv

In the example above, mvpmc would get the MythTV program guide info
via the MythTV protocol, but it would play the recordings via NFS.
The mvpmc software can also use the Myth protocol for recording
playback rather than using NFS. If you would like to use the Myth
protocol, the last line in dongle.bin.mvpmc.config would look like
this.

/bin/mvpmc -f /etc/helvR10.fnt -s 192.168.0.2 -o svideo -a 4:3 -m ntsc r

Copy dongle.bin.mvpmc.config to /tftpboot.
# cp dongle.bin.mvpmc.config /tftpboot

# exit

Odd, i have that same case, a PVR-250 and no problems...

I would agree with Robert though. I would make sure that the card is

probably just leave it held in by the PCI riser. Hopefully, after you
build it and get it placed, nothing should mess with the cables

[mythtv-users] Problem with transcode (Segfault)

2005-01-29 Thread Magnus Sandin
Hi!
When I try to transcode a recorded program, the mythtranscode process
becomes a zombie process...

When I run the command manually (cut and paste from the ps command when
mythtv started mythtranscode) I get this:

# mythtranscode -c 1000 -s 2005-01-27T20:00:00 -p autodetect -d -l
2005-01-29 22:48:28 Transcoding from

Unknown video codec: 2005-01-29 22:48:28 Fast-Forwarding from 0 to 498
Segmentation fault

Is this due to som version dependencies between mythtv and 3rd party
encoders?
I'm not sure how mythtv transcode, but if mplayer is used, I can tell
you that I'm using the following RPM for mplayer:
mplayer-1.0-39_pre6.rhfc1.at

I'm using the precompiled RPM-packages of MythTV 0.16 from atprms.net on
Fedora Core 1.
I installed mythtv using apt-get.

Any ideas folks?
Thanks.

Re: [mythtv-users] OT: Hardware question...

2005-01-29 Thread Was A Bear
Andrew, do NOT leave that card incorrectly seated! Well, I guess you CAN
if you really want to. If you decide to leave it incorrectly seated can
you do me a huge favor; instead of powering up your machine just put
that currently working PVR-250 in a box and ship it to me... ya know, it
would save me $150.00 and it would get you the same result as not
seating the card correctly. That result being you not having a card to
use. ;-)

If I were you I would go with Robert's suggestion below. But then again
I would like a free PVR-250... hhhmmm.

Re: [mythtv-users] OT: Hardware question...

2005-01-29 Thread Andrew Close
ok, i took the mobo out and set it flat on a level table. it looked
pretty good. however, the bottom of the case wasn't level, according
to my trusty level. :) and yes, the case is sitting on a level
surface.
if you press on the bottom of the case it bubbles slightly like is a
bit warped. that slight bubble is enough to true the surface back to
level. i currently have the 'case' shimmed with a couple cd's right
in the middle. i'm guessing this isn't the best solution, but there
doesn't appear to be any other way to stiffen up the bottom of the
case. the 'cd shim' solution will work while i run through Myth
config, but as soon as i move the case i'm guessing my cards will
become unseated again. this will make it tricky to take it down to my
entertainment center where it will reside...

anyone else using the Cooler Master Black MicroATX 5-Bay DeskTop Case,
Model ATC-620C-BX1 and notice the bottom surface has a little sag?

Was a bear, sorry, i think i'll hold onto the pvr ;) i don't intend
to power it up unless it's seated properly.

Robert, the case and mobo are both micro-ATX or so they state on the
NewEgg site. :)

Pete, the little risers in the case don't appear to be brass. they
look like they're aluminum. they are permanently afixed to the bottom
of the case.

Well, I fixed the sound problem that was system wide, and now have
sound both out of mythtv and in it. Unfortunately, the sound isn't
always there in live tv, though changing channels seems to reassert
the sound on the stream. I haven't had a chance to try the

the test recordings I've done have recorded channel 51, no matter what
channel I'm trying to record. This also seems to have started with my

came back on their own after a restart, so I have no idea if I actually
had to do something to fix them.

 Good luck.

I have acquired an xbox, and have performed the MechAssault hack on it

I then successfully downloaded the Xebian 1.0.3 .iso file

I am now ready to install Dennis Cartier's mythtv-xbox programs...the
only problem is that Dennis's site hot hacked a while ago (PhpBB

If someone on this last has that tarballplease, please, please

Re: [mythtv-users] OS X

2005-01-29 Thread Robert E. Karaffa, II
Thanks for the prompt reply, Jeremiah. I wish I had waited until I had asked my
questions before plunging off into thin air. Turns out my MacMyth frontend DID
indeed corrupt my backend database! How badly, I'm not sure. I'm attempting
to fix things now. So far, all that I've detected is that my video database no
longer links the movies with their respective .jpgs/descriptions/imdb info.

Next Questions:
1) i've reinstalled Panther on my MacMyth frontend (it's a scratch disk until I
learn how to do this properly!). that wiped out any potential trouble spots.
now, which Myth version do I want? I only want to watch movies, so I only need
access to MythVideo. So, I downloaded the CVS w/plugins version. It won't
allow me past the initial setup screen because there is no backend. best
approach?

2) do I need to go through the installation instructions on MythOnMacOSX, and
then use the CVS w/plugins version?

forgive me for appearing dense! (tis troo, nonetheless!)

[mythtv-users] Configuring remote and xine

2005-01-29 Thread Mark Prinz
I am having difficulties getting xine to accept commands from my
remote. While this may be OT, I was hoping someone here could help me
as it is related to my usage of MythTV and I know others have it
working. FWIW, I am using Jarod's remote file on FC1 and the
xine-0.99 RPM from freshrpms.net

I tried the steps listed in the following thread (as well as others):

lirc and Xine:
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/59828?search_string=lirc%20and%20xine;#59828

but I cannot get it to work. If I add the 'xine' entries as listed in
that thread, mythfrontend does not even accept commands from the
remote. However, if I revert back to the original lircrc,
mythfrontend accepts commands, but xine doesn't work (obviously, as
the entries are not listed anymore)

Here are the steps I took:

1. Added the xine-specific commands to /home/mythtv/.mythtv/lircrc
2. Ran the following command: ln -s ~/.mythtv/lircrc ~/.lircrc
3. Reviewed ~/.lircrc to confirm step 2 worked (it did)
4. Rebooted (just to be safe...I'm a Linux newb)
5. Tried remote on mythfrontend UI...no response.
6. Reverted to backup of lircrc (the version that did not have the
xine entries)
7. Rebooted (again, just to be safe, although I'm sure a restart of
mythfrontend would do the trick).
8. Remote worked fine on mythfrontend (but obviously not xine as the
entries were not in the lircrc file anymore).

Obviously something in my modified lircrc is causing the problem.
However, I have not been able to find anything here or on Google that
can help me get past this. I thought it could be a problem with LIRC
not seeing xine, but I could not find anything useful. Since MythTV
does not accept remote commands with my xine entries, there must be
some configuration/startup routine that is 'failing' because of my
entries.

Any assistance would be appreciated. If there are file that would
help troubleshoot, just let me know. Thanks in advance for any
assistance.

Adding

 Couple of ways actually.

 1) When setting up a scheduled recording, you can go to the Storage
Options page and go down to the recording group option and select Create a
 new
recording group. That will take you to the list of recording groups and
you can create a new one by selecting the create option. Just type the name
in the textbox and cursor down and select OK.

How do I type this with only a remote? It always shows a default string of
__NEW_GROUP__. I could not even find the option in Myth's web interface
at all.

[mythtv-users] Commercial Flagging Problem

2005-01-29 Thread Joe Willis
I am running MythTV .16 using a PVR-350. Commercial flagging was very
accurate for a while, but now is almost random. The areas identified as
commercials often are regular program segments, and actual commercials are
detected infrequently. What could have caused this deterioration? The
image quality is quite good, so I don't think that is the problem.

I have grown to love the one-key commercial skipping, so I hope there is an

So you have a PBX and a home automation system in your home? How much
do each of these projects cost? I took a good look at the asterisk

project and it didn't look like much of an outlay, but what are the
advantages to having a PBX in your home if you have one line? Maybe
you have a business in your home?
Well Asterisk isn't just plain PBX. It has also voicemail, Interactive Voice
Responses, it has VOIP functionality... So I can call my family from work
for free, also with others... I can control house over phone and DTMF,
Festival (TTS) speaks back what's going on in the house, etc... And yes, I
have one line too, but like all these features...

If you're talking about the MySQL settings screen, you do still need a
database server. The backend offers two parts: an actual
mythbackend process, and the MySQL database that is used by
mythfrontend and mythbackend. The mythbackend program offers
TV-watching functionality, the database is used by everything to store
preferences and various other data. You still need the database half of
the equation.

The database server can run on your OS X box and be completely separate
from your KnoppMyth box, though, so you don't get corruption again. I'd
recommend this setup for you; I don't have any instructions on setting
up a MySQL server, though I'm sure you can Google for some.

If I've got this all wrong and you're stuck somewhere else, please post
more details about what's going wrong.

2) do I need to go through the installation instructions on

No, you don't need to do the MythOnMacOsx instructions if you use the
binary; it has all of the dependencies included in its bundle.

forgive me for appearing dense! (tis troo, nonetheless!)
It took me months to figure out how all of the pieces talked to each

Re: [mythtv-users] mythstream won't stream

2005-01-29 Thread David Whyte
What media player are you using to view the stream?

It definately looks like there is a problem with the script trying to
kill the old vlc process, but the stream is there, and it appears to
be recieving a request from a viewer to attach to the stream.

I have no idea why kill wouldn't work, I wonder if there are some
differences between FC2 which I am on and Gentoo :|

Re: [mythtv-users] NUVExport slow export solution

2005-01-29 Thread Chris Petersen
nuvexport gets the output of transcode, parses it, reformats, and prints
it on the screen.
This fixed the
problem and increased the rate back to a peak of around 50 FPS when
using nuvexport!
I've added --print_status 16 to the transcode options -- even 4 frames
is probably overkill.

And am open to suggestions about how to do something similar with ffmpeg
(nuvexport will soon be using ffmpeg for just about everything, since
transcode doesn't seem to work with a bunch of mpeg type files), or even
just speed up the buffering in nuvexport. In my tests with the mp3
encoder, my settings were pulling 80-100fps, which I figured would be
fast enough; apparently it doesn't carry over to the other encoder types.

I also noticed nuvexport will still use the -Z option when the output
resolution matches the input resolution. Transcode will still do zoom
when the -Z option is specified with no change in resolution thus
slowing down the frame rate for nothing.
Yeah. I apparently gave too much credit to transcode. You don't happen
to have a patch for this, do you?

Since my computer has a HT cpu I uncommented the option to specify the
number of CPUs in the transcode.pm file and gained about 1 FPS. I
noticed the first parameter for this option defaults to 10 but the code
in transcode.pm set it to 100. I used 10 and even tried 20 with no
change of framerate so I left it at 10. I assume 100 would be overkill
and may even slow it down like the comment indicated.
Interesting. On my dual athlon, I found the exact opposite -- about
1.5-3 fps slower (nuvexport has multi-cpu detection included, but
deactivated). Since transcode encodes both audio and video in separate
threads, the kernel sends those to separate CPU's (which is what HT
works as in this case). Creating another encoding thread just causes
them all to fight for resources on the lesser-used cpu.

Wouldn't be hard to add a commandline option to optionally enable this
(since it would definitely help for something like a dual-xeon box)

Re: [mythtv-users] Have Lirc IR Blaster, now All I need is help making a lirc.conf...

2005-01-29 Thread STEPHEN WANAMAKER
As recommended, I tried executing the
channel change script while holding the other end of
the IR blaster to a camera to ensure that the blaster
was attempting to flash the signals. This was
sucessful and I was able to see it attempt to flash
the signals. So at this point I am assuming that the
lirc setup is 100% working, and I am just missing the
correct lirc.conf for my settop box. Would you say
that is accurate? If no config exists for the SA
3200, is there no way to generate one?

Damon.

 Damon,

Can you post the contents of the following files for
 me:

 /etc/modules.conf
 /etc/lircd.conf
 /etc/rc.d/rc.local
 your change_chan.sh script

(you may just want to backchanell me when you send
 those files...I'm
not really sure what the etiquette would be
 concerning posting them
for the whole list at this point... it's andymyth

I'd give the digital camera trick a shot, but the
 irblaster I bought
never actually made light that the camera picked up
 (though every
single other remote I own did). Actually frustrated
 me for a bit
until i figured out that my camera just wasn't
 picking up on it.

I am sure this is because I was using the config

  My question(s):

  - Is there a way I can use irrecord to

  - Will the IR Blaster I purchased work on
 any Digital box or do
you need to make sure you purchase an IR blaster

  - Anyone have a pre-made lirc.conf for
 the SA3200 (wishful

You have all been a great help in the past and I

It looks like your /var/tmp/STREAMSTOP may already exist and belong to
root. Try removing the file to resolve that issue.

Enable verbose debugging in the mythstreamtv.sh file by adding -vvv. That

Hope that helps.
