I see, so at what point do those values get filled in? Does that mean
that I should do a full scan first and that the 'channel' and
'dtv_multiplex' table should be filled in at least with initial
information and at that point I can import channels.conf? Or do those
tables get filled in during the mythfilldatabase process meaning I
should select my source, run mythfilldatabase and then import
channels.conf? Well, in either case, I manually added the transports
via the advanced button and then ran a mythfilldatabase against my
source end then imported the channels.conf but noticed that I got an
error "Unknown column 'qam_256' in 'where clause'" and the query string
was "Select mplexid FROM dtv_multiplex WHERE sourceid=1 AND
frequency=76500 AND inversion='a' AND modulation=qam_256;  So maybe
I'm not correcctly matinch up the channel name, i.e. KUTVDT vs KUTV-DT
as reported by zap2it so my sourceid doesn't match up? Anyway I'll keep
chasing after it.

[mythtv-users] Hello, and question about sound

2005-09-14 Thread Jeff Clemens
First of all, I'm new here, and would like to say hello.

The following question is not necessarily specific to Myth, but it affects Myth, and I'm not really sure which component is causing the trouble.

I've been running Myth successfully on FC3 for a few months now.  I recently upgraded everything (apt-get dist-upgrade).  Since I've done that, I can't seem to get the line-in on my soundcard to feed through to the digital out.

I'm using a SB Audigy card that has been working great with Alsa until this upgrade.  I have a PVR350 and have the audio outs looped back to the line in on the sound card.

Since the upgrade, Kmix seems to have changed.  There are fewer sliders, and no mute buttons.  My guess is that the line-in is muted or something, but I can't seem to un mute it.

I've gone through the digital sound setup reccommended in Jarod's guide, and that worked until now.

Thinking that maybe it was an issue with Kmix, I tried a few other mixer apps, and none of them seem to have the mute controls any longer, so maybe it's an ALSA issue.

I've read that others seem to have similar setups, does anyone have any experience with this problem on here?

Thanks in advance,

Turns out it's the debug that's been breaking it.

Google brings up lots of links with others that have assembler message errors but I couldn't find anything helpful.
Am I the only one?

I've tried compiling forcing --arch=i686 (still fails same way),
--disable-mmx then it compiles but recorded streams from tv (DVB) are
extremely choppy with many prebuffering messages.

The only way to get rid of it is to not compile goom in, but I really like goom.  :(

Anyone?

The 'channels' and 'dtv_multiplex' tables are also involved in this
process - make sure that the frequency info is in the multiplex table,
and that the channel entry in the channels table references the

[mythtv-users] How to properly use the new svn channels.conf import?

2005-09-14 Thread Brian Merrill
Hi.
I am one of the unlucky HDTV cable users who can't get valid information
from a standard QAM-256 scan from mythtv-setup. I have managed to
manually hand edit the information using mysql and get all my cable HDTV
channels working well with 18.1 but since it's a big pain in the
knickers to do each time, I am anxious for a quicker method. The new
channels.conf import method appears to be the answer to my problems on
the surface, but so far I have not been able to get it to work the way
the various posts I could find on the subject seem to make it out to
be. Most likely I am being incredibly dense on some small factoid, but
perhaps somebody could point out what that might be.

Step 1: From what I can tell, the format of the channels.conf file
should be "name, frequency, modulation, atsc channel"
Step 2: Using the latest dvb-apps form linuxtv.org cvs I run
"/usr/local/bin/dvbscan -v -v -a1 -A2
/usr/local/share/dvb/scan/atsc/us-Cable-Standard-center-frequencies-QAM256
> ~/.azap/channels.conf"

This results in a file with lines of the form:
[0001]:71100:QAM_256:17:20:1
which, in this case, corresponds to my local CBS station.
Step 3. I edit the above output to be:
KUTVDT:71100:QAM_256:1
which should correspond to the format that everyone seems to be using in
step 1.
Step 4. Run mythtv-setup, select channels, select scan for channels,
select scan type, import channels.conf after which I see the loaded
channels of the form:

KUTVDT(1) DVB-C
where DVB-C is my zap2it program listings.

Now this is where I start to get a little fuzzy. Is there anything left
for me to other than run mythfilldatabase? Or do I need to now do a
full scan? If I do a full dvb scan, myth setup still detects no
channels. If I just simply run mythbackend, it still won't tune. But
this doesn't surprise me since I don't think I'm getting all the
information into mysql. If I do "select
chanid, channum, freqid, mplexid, serviceid from channel;" the output shows:

++-++-+---+
| chanid | channum | freqid | mplexid | serviceid |
++-++-+---+
| 1000 | 1 | NULL | 1 | 1 |
| 1001 | 11 | NULL | 1 |11 |
| 1002 | 12 | NULL | 1 |12 |
| 1003 | 13 | NULL | 1 |13 |
etc, etc...

So obviously I'm missing something. Why doesn't the channels.conf
import add the freqid information? It's there in the channels.conf.
Also why is the channum set to the serviceid? Should I include another
field in channels.conf with the name I want the channel to be? Is there
an extended format for channels.conf that allows you to add addition
information? Or am I still just stuck manually adding this information
to mysql?

I appreciate any thoughts and help.

Brian Merrill

MySQL is not correctly setup for one thing I reckon.

Did the SQL error messages start any warning bells? There are 2 errors
on the first screenshot - Privileges has a typo...

First, check your current user info

$ mysql -u root -p
mysql> USE mysql;
mysql> SELECT Host,User FROM user;

Please post the output.

Make sure all mythtv users (called mythtv) who need to can connect to
the database (assuming your local network is 192.168.1/24). From the
mythtv offical docs, try

$ mysql -u root mythconverg
mysql> grant all on mythconverg.* to mythtv@"192.168.1.%" identified
by "mythtv";
mysql> flush privileges;

There is also an error in the mc.sql script which needs to be
addressed before you go any further. Please send a copy to me. I'm
sure it's related to user access in mysql too.

I would *seriously* consider wiping completely and starting over
following Jarod's guide from the beginning if this doesn't give any
progress.

The output produced by the 169time.com modification is NOT compatible
with MythTV. There was post awhile back; someone tried to contact 169
to write a capture driver, but 169 refused to give out info on the
format. (I may be a little off on the details, but that was basically
the case)
I've got the same problem as you - can't give up DirecTV (b/c of
football), but am struggling with not being able to record dish-only
HD channels.

[mythtv-users] Finding xmacroplay-keys for use with MythGame

2005-09-14 Thread Lane Schwartz

Does anyone know where on earth to find the file xmacroplay-keys?

It's referenced here (http://mythtv.info/moin.cgi/MythGameHowTo?

using the remote control, but for the life of me I can't find it
anywhere, including at http://xmacro.sourceforge.net.

Re: [mythtv-users] What would cause choppy audio recording?

2005-09-14 Thread Brian McEntire
Hmmm

I know it seems unlikely that it's the recording side, but that's why
I've tried two different computers and then posted to the list to see
if anyone had any ideas.

The first computer I tried playback on is the FE/BE combo and that's
where I saw the problem. It's a 1.6 GHz P4 so it isn't suprising it
can't keep up with HDTV.

Then I tried playback on a 1.7 GHz Pentium M, which is supposed to have
more horse power per cycle than a P4 and has seemed quick on other
apps. Granted, this is pretty close to the 1.6 where I originally had
the problem so maybe it's still underpowered.

One HTDV show I recorded before and which was set to transcode
automatically to MPEG4 plays well on both computers *if* I play it with
mplayer with the -framedrop parameter.

However, several recordings since then, even when transcoded, don't seem to play back smoothly even with -framedrop.

If anyone wants to try it, I could post a few seconds of the transcoded
content (PBS news) somewhere and you could tell me if plays back okay
for you.

About MPEG4 playback being CPU intensive... are you sure? I thought
part of the benefit of MPEG4 was the high cost of encoding but the low
cost of decoding (ie, so you can play it on little hand held devices.)
The transcoded dimensions are MUCH smaller than the original, weighing
in at 352x240, which should help with the CPU usage a good bit. In
fact, when I playback on the 1.7 GHz Pentium M, CPU usage is only
25%-30% according to 'top', but the audio is still choppy.

No. You should:

1. Not run mythtv on the backend as root.
2. Not run mysql on the backend as root.
3. Be perfectly able to mount a hidden directory
from your backend to your frontend.

Just list the directory in /etc/exports on the backend
and on the /etc/fstab.

[mythtv-users] PVR-500 + VIA KT400 = rebooting? black magic problem?

2005-09-14 Thread Brian M. Sperlongano
Hi Folks,

I recently bought a PVR-500 to replace my existing low-quality saa7139
card.  I've finally gotten through the various instructions and
have gotten nice high-quality video out of /dev/video0 but only for
about 5 seconds, after which my machine reboots!!!  There was a
previous thread on the list where someone complained of having problems
with KT133 motherboards, and since my mobo (Soyo KT400) uses the KT400
chipset, I thought there might be a problem.

Also, with the .3x release of ivtv, it seems that the no_black_magic
flag is no longer an option, as I get the following in dmesg when I try
to install the card:

cx25840: Unknown parameter `no_black_magic'

In any case: perfect video for a few seconds, then POOF reboot.

That's interesting. I have a 6600 and it (mostly the X
server) is just maxing out an Athlon64 3500+ when playing a 720p video
in a 1920x1080 display. It plays fine but there's no headroom
(eg. for >1.0x timestretch). Playing a 1080i video uses less CPU. I
had been assuming this was due to inadequate Xv support since an older
card (PCX5300) was using much less CPU for 720p. (Unfortunately, the
video quality of the older card was really bad at 1920x1080 so I had
to return it.)

I'd recommend trying a booster, even living so close. I'm a long way
from the Sutton Coldfield transmitter and need boosters (one in the
loft with the digital aerial before being distributed, and one on the
wall outlet to get decent reception on all channels.

I've also noticed not all DVB cards are created equal in terms of
tuning - my 90002 Nova-T card seems to be much more affected by a
weaker signal than my 2 V-Stream Xpert cards - they also seems to tune
quicker.

I'd second a playback or transcoding issue rather than a capturing
problem. DVB here in the UK (like HDTV in the US) is 'recorded' by
'dumping' the broadcast streams to disk 'as they are' - so no

Google brings up lots of links with others that have assembler message errors but I couldn't find anything helpful.
Am I the only one?

I've tried compiling forcing --arch=i686 (still fails same way),

Besides setting the poster directory to something shared on an NFS mount in the setup?

I'm assuming here that the backend and the frontend are on seperate
machines, and that the backend and the frontend have at least one nfs
share both can write to.  What does it say in the setting for the
movie poster location?  Is location on the nfs share?  Also,
what user does your mythtv run as?  Does it run as root?  My
understanding was that the frontend would be the one running the script
to retrieve posters, but I could be wrong.  Does the directory
exists that the frontend has in the setting box?

As a last resort, try creating a symlink in the place the frontend has
in the setting as follows, from the backend computer, assuming that the
directory /mnt/MythVideo/ is on the nfs share and can be seen by both.

As root:
ln -s /root/.mythtv/mythvideo /mnt/MythVideo/posters
chmod a+x ~
chmod a+x ~/.mythtv/
chmod a+rwx ~/.mythtv/mythvideo

chmod a+rwx /mnt/MythVideo/posters

Not sure if nfs will allow you to follow the symlink like that.
If you can see in the directory and see the posters now, just set
/mnt/MythVideo/posters in the frontend and try it that way.

[mythtv-users] HD Audio dropouts during MNF

2005-09-14 Thread Dave
Hi,
I had some audio issues during MNF this week(Eagles vs Falcons). I
recorded the game via DVB on a HD3000 with Myth 18.1.
At various points, audio would drop completely, and the only way to
fix it was to stop the recording, then restart it.
I tried using +/- to switch audio tracks, but that didn't help at
all. I didn't see anything significant in the frontend logs.

I also noticed a few points where the 5.1 audio would switch to 2.0
and back again, but this was probably a transmission issue on ABC's
part.

Did anyone else experience similar issues?

Thanks

[mythtv-users] a lame question no pun intended

2005-09-14 Thread Gregg
I am trying to use nuvexport to export to divx.  And I get this

Using ffmpeg for exporting.
What would you like to do?

  1. Export to XviD (disabled)
  2. Export to SVCD
  3. Export to VCD
  4. Export to DVCD (VCD with 48kHz audio for making DVDs)
  5. Export to DVD
  6. Export to DivX (disabled)
  7. Export to ASF (disabled)
  8. Export to MP3 (disabled)
  9. MPEG2->MPEG2 cut only
 10. Export to .nuv and .sql

When I try divx it says ffmpeg has not been configured for mp3, and
ffmpeg has not been configured for xvid.  I installed using Jarods
guide with apt-get.  Is ffmpeg not configured with those options,
or am I missing something.  It works to transcode to xvid.

Thanks.

It sounds like I may be wrong, Myth should work fine since it doesn't
user overlay as Isaac pointed out. The most popular card for a linux
media box is a fanless FX5200. The 5200's are very inexpensive
($35-$45) plus not having a fan on them are a plus for keeping a system
quiet. The only thing lacking on them is 3D performance, but it's still
plenty to run wolfenstein/enemy territory, and I've even played farcry
on low settings. if you want the boost on 3D, check the GPU clock
speed, some are 333mhz and some are 400mhz. I've happened to burn out
one evga card, and my new one no longer drives DVI (After playing enemy
territory for 30 hours one week), but my case has almost no air
circulating (AKA, it's my own fault).

The power of the different muxes is given on this page:

As you can see, muxes C and D are transmitted at half power compared
to the rest. And since mux D is at the highest frequency i'd guess
that the one you're having problems with, right? (Mux D shows TMF, The
Hits, Ftn, etc).

Yes, this is the one

Thinking about it, it's just as bad in our house, which has the aerial
fitted to the roof (2 storey) and no trees around it. If we are only 3-4
miles from the transmitter, I don't see how anyone is going to receive
this mux well...

I may try a friends booster to see if it will make any difference - I
don't think it is my connections or aerial, as the digibox in the house
seems to have the same problem

Anyway, guys, thanks for all the suggestions. If i find a solution I

Interesting. Maybe we could all use a little teaching. Is the video
texture adapter part of VMR, or is the video texture adapter part of a
GL surface that the video is played on? Most of us know that overlay is
important for keeping smooth video when video's pan and so on.

What about XVMC on newer nvidia cards?

And last thing not related to myth directly, if people use mplayer or
xine to watch movies, do those players use video texture adapter or
overlay?

Are you using DVB? If so, when you add go into mythtv-setup -> cards,
does it report it sees the pcHDTV card when selecting a DVB card? If
so, then it sounds like you're missing the DVB firmware for the card.
Grab it from pchdtv.com's download section (listed as firmware) and put
that into your /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware (Or may be
/lib/hotplug/firmware for FC4) then try scanning for channels again.

The Myth SVN/Head as of last night is working pretty well and has a lot
of new useful support for DVB.

Not true at all.

Xv is not _just_ the video overlay. If you're getting tearing, turn on the
'Sync to VBlank' options in the XVideo settings in the nvidia-settings app.

Myth uses the 'video texture adapter' by default on these newer boards, and
the only thing missing is support for adjusting the contrast/brightness/etc
through Xv. No tearing, performance is exactly the same as with older
hardware, and there's no colorkey to show up at odd times. =)

Brian McEntire wrote:

I'm recording OTA HDTV with a PC HD-3000 card.

The video quality looks perfect, rarely pixelates, but the audio is
very bad: it sounds choppy, echos frequently, and has a pulsing
quality to it.

I'm recording on a P3 1.6 with 768 MB RAM. From what I understand,
recording OTA HDTV doesn't take a lot of resources because the card is
just capturing the (already encoded) MPEG2 stream from within the ATSC
broadcast.

I think the problem does lay in the capture side though because even
if I transcode a captured show to xvid using nuvexport, the audio
still sounds the same on playback and I think those transcoded formats
wouldn't tax the CPU enough to cause audio problems.

Actually, MPEG-4 (DivX, XviD, etc.) requires more resources to decode
than MPEG-2. Basically, the higher the compression, the harder your CPU
has to work (for both compression and decompression). H.264 gives even
more compression than MPEG-4, but will put the the best-on-the-market
general-purpose CPU's to the test for decoding a 1920x1080 stream.

So, how about fessing up--what kind of system are you using to play back
the video? Have you tried playing it back in other players (i.e.
MPlayer or xine)? Have you tested it on a Windows machine? It sounds
to me like a playback problem since--as you correctly observed--HDTV
capture is just writing the already-encoded MPEG-2 stream to disk.

Most likely, environment variables such as $HOME.

When you are already logged in and using the "service" command, the
login environment is already set up for you. When daemons are started,
there is no login environment. It is therefore a bug (or a mis-design if
you will) to depend on the login environment for a program that is
started at boot time. Programs designed to run at system startup time
should not be looking in user home directories (even root). Such
programs normally use config files kept in /etc somewhere (e.g. on FC
systems, /etc/sysconfig/mythbackend or some such thing). Or the startup
script should have a variable to set where the config file is. But
relying on environment variables like $HOME to find it results in
exactly this sort of problem. I note that on my FC3 system, you can set
$MYTHTV_HOME in the /etc/sysconfig/mythbackend file, but doing so did
not work. That's a bug I think, albeit one that is easily worked around.

I ran into this same problem on my frontend system; it worked fine if I
started mythbackend as root or as mythtv, but would not work if started
at boot time. I solved it by having mythbackend start when mythtv logs
in (right before mythfrontend starts), which also happens automatically.
On my back end, it does look as though I put a copy of mysql.txt
into /.mythtv, which I only discovered I needed when I modified the
startup script to start mythbackend under strace, so I could then see
that it was trying to open /.mythtv/mysql.txt . I don't know why I
didn't think of the environment thing before that. And I *really* don't
know why I didn't remember going through this when the same problem
occurred on my slave backend system. I think I'm getting too old for
this stuff :-)

1) The manual warns that leaving stationary images on the TV can cause
burn in and is not covered by warranty so I'm pretty sure it doesn't.

2) I haven't tried hooking it up to a regular monitor yet. That's my goal

Nope. I tried kicking off the screensaver both ways, just in case. Yes, I

Thanks for yours and Garry Cook's response.

It looks like I have 0.3.7k from ATRPMS. Should I try an older version?

At least I know this has worked. Just need to figure out what level of

[mythtv-users] Exit and shutdown

2005-09-14 Thread Greg Woods
I did search the archives and I found one possible solution to my
problem involving hacking an XML file, which I can probably do assuming
I can find the correct file to edit.

I just finished setting up a Pundit-R machine as a front end. It worked
quite well once I got everything in place. But I found that I couldn't
get good signal quality on the backend system if I had a splitter in the
computer room, even with two signal amplifiers upstream. (I have no clue
how to do crimped connections, I'm not qualified to do that, and I've
done everything else that has been suggested to increase signal strengh
other than that so I am out of options). So I said, fine, I'll just use
the PVR-500 alone in the backend (works fine, good quality on both
tuners), and heck, I'll take the PVR-150 and put it in my front end
downstairs; I've got a cable hookup there and I can save the 500's
tuners for recording and at least get some use out of the 150 for
watching Live TV. Also, the 150 has a remote that I've been able to get
working with lirc, so it solves my problem getting the Streamzap to work
on the front end as well (no longer necessary).

So all this long-windedness is setting up for the real question. I put
the PVR-150 into the front end, and of course that meant I had to set
that system up as a slave backend. Had a little trouble but got it
working eventually. Once I did that, I no longer see the "Exit and
Shutdown" option in mythfrontend. Why did it go away?

I have read about the auto-shutdown features and I presume this is
related to that somehow. But I don't really want to use the Pundit as a
recording backend even though it might be capable of it. I don't have a
UPS down there and I don't want to leave it up all the time. But I do
want to use the PVR-150 for watching live TV, which means I have to set
the "frontend" system up as a slave backend. But I want to shut it down
when I'm done using the front end. But now I only have "Exit" and "No,
don't exit" options and there's no way for me to shut the system all the
way down cleanly without a keyboard attached.

Is hacking the XML file the best way to get what I want, or is the
kludgy "set the auto shutdown time to five minutes" solution I've seen
proposed better? I just don't want my master backend to try and schedule
recordings on the frontend because it won't be up most of the time and
it doesn't have auto-wakeup either.

[mythtv-users] Oh HDTV, Wherefore art Thou?

2005-09-14 Thread Mat Kyne
I am one of those people who just can't seem to get it working. I built my
MythTV box about a year ago, but I still can't get it working properly. It
seems as soon as I get one thing fixed, Something else breaks. Every time
there is a problem, I seem to throw money at it. (wouldn't you like to be my
problem?) All together I have spent 1,300 on my HDTV MythTV box, but it
still won't work. Please help me.

I updated my system to FC4, because it was new, and the included Kernel had
built in support for my pc HDTV 3000 card. I got mythTV all setup correctly,
but when I get to the part in channel setup, and tell it to scan for
channels, It doesn't find any. A few months ago while I was using KnoppMyth,
I was able to receive all of the OTA channels offered in my area (ABC, CBS,
NBC, FOX, WB & PBS). Now I get nothing? I did notice that while the scan was
in progress that the top bar said 95%, and I thought that might be the
lowest signal strength that it would accept? Am I guessing correctly? Any
advice on how you got the pc HDTV 3000 working in FC4 would be greatly
appreciated.

[mythtv-users] HDTV Playback causes Segmentation Fault

2005-09-14 Thread Ian Prowell
I am trying to get HDTV playback working on my MythTV system. I am
recording OTA HDTV with a HD-3000. The recordings are working fine. I
can see the content in the preview windows when I select the recording,
but when I actually go to play the recording the MythTV frontend
segfaults. This happens both on a frontend with a PVR-350 and on a
frontend with a Matrox G450. I know these are not fast enough to
playback full HDTV video, but I am trying to transcode it down to a
resolution that will work. The results are the same whether I transcode
the files or not.

If I run mythfrontend in a terminal I end up with the following output
before the crash:

2005-09-14 12:54:47.407 Using protocol version 15

2005-09-14 12:55:07.614 Using realtime priority.
Segmentation fault

I have tried to play the files with mplayer. The NUV files that are
captured using the HD-350 playback fine with mplayer, but the NUV files
that are captured with the HD-3000 cause mplayer to segfault unless I
add the "-nosound" flag. Then they playback, but don't look right.
Only the left half of the video is there, there are horizontal, and
other artifacts.

[mythtv-users] What would cause choppy audio recording?

2005-09-14 Thread Brian McEntire
I'm recording OTA HDTV with a PC HD-3000 card.

The video quality looks perfect, rarely pixelates, but the audio is
very bad: it sounds choppy, echos frequently, and has a pulsing quality
to it.

I'm recording on a P3 1.6 with 768 MB RAM. From what I understand,
recording OTA HDTV doesn't take a lot of resources because the card is
just capturing the (already encoded) MPEG2 stream from within the ATSC
broadcast.

I think the problem does lay in the capture side though because even if
I transcode a captured show to xvid using nuvexport, the audio still
sounds the same on playback and I think those transcoded formats
wouldn't tax the CPU enough to cause audio problems.

Any ideas?

Depends on what you plan to do. For standard definition TV, the ATI
onboard chip that came as part of my ASUS Pundit-R machine works
perfectly well for TV out (once I downloaded the driver from ATI). But,
I only have SD, I don't do any high definition yet.

I have been told that it is better to put the booster before the fork
rather than after it. The fork itself can introduce noise, and then
you're boosting the noise along with the signal. Putting the booster as
far upstream as you can is best; amplify signal, not noise, as much as
you can.

Re: [mythtv-users] Hardware problem with Silverstone Case

The LC-10 and the LC-11 are completely different
beasts. The LC-10 is ATX, and the LC-11 is microATX.

That said, I also have an LC-10, and am reasonably
satisfied with it, but it does have it's share of
deficiencies. The hard drives are placed in a poor
way for ventilation and spacing (which limits me to
one hard drive and a DVD-ROM). Otherwise, for a full
ATX case, it's small enough to fit in my TV stand, and
I can't really complain too much about it.

When I play the stream in mplayer using mplayer -vo xv /dev/video0 (or directly
into X11 without the -vo switch) I am getting strange vertical lines appearing
in 3 blocks all the way across the picture (playing in mplayer) like this:

|||
|||

They also appear capturing from composite in, so have nothing to do with
the tuner, and when playing a file written to disk from the 500.
These do not appear if I play an mpeg2 file not captured from the 500 (test
file from the net), so they are not being generated by the screencard.

I can only think this has to do with the paramaters I've used to set up
the card. I'm following Jarods wonderful guide and have used the

ivtvctl -u 0xff
ivtvctl -p 4
ivtvctl -f width=720,height=576

options to set the card up for PAL

Has anyone else seen these lines and what did they do to fix it?

At this point I would be happy to see vertical lines in the video
captured using my PVR-500. :)

It seems like the only input on my PVR-500 that gets anything (just
static unfortunately) was 6. Of course I am trying to run this in NTSC
mode not PAL mode. So that may be the difference with that setting.

And this is on the first tuner on the PVR-500, the second tuner does not
appear to get anything.

I am currently trying to use what appears to be ivtv 0.3.7. The
firmware I have is listed as dec-2.02.023-4. All from the ATRPMS repo.

Could the problem I'm having be that I don't have the correct ivtv
drivers/firmware?

These seem to work just fine with the PVR-350 I have.

Probably better off copying the file (or, even better, moving the file
and chown'ing it since root doesn't need it) from root's home directory
to mythtv's. No normal users should have access to any files in root's
home (or the directory itself). This won't affect Myth directly, but is
a much cleaner approach overall.

root does need it if you ever start mythbackend by hand as root, hence
having one copy of mysql.txt in ~root/.mythtv/ with and the other one
in /.mythtv/ symlinked back to it. You only ever need maintain one
file then...

OK. If you're running user-level applications as root, letting users
access root's home directory is a relatively small concern. ;)

I would try to ensure you have a fanless video card and a quiet/silent
CPU cooler (such as a Zalman) to keep the noise levels down whilst
you're watching. I think a 5200-based card would be fine for HDTV -
you just need a beefy CPU for playback.

Also, make sure you have a decent audio system in the machine, ideally
with SPDIF if possible (if you have a receiver with SPDIF or are
thinking of getting one).

Hello, I've been browsing through the archives and can't seem to find

to my problem:

P4 1.7GHz
512MB RAM
Geforce 2 Video Card using VGA out
Mitsubishi WT46809 (connected with breakout cable)
Hauppauge PVR 250

I have gotten MythTV set up and running great. Recording works great with
the PVR-250, I've got it running 1920x1080i and I'm working on getting
Lirc running now.

My problem is that my TV doesn't want to wake up after I turn it off for
an extended period of time. I leave the Myth frontend running and I turn
the TV off when I'm done to prevent burn in. If I leave it off for more
than a half hour when I come back to turn it on it comes on for about 5
seconds and shuts itself off.

I can get it working again by unplugging the VGA from the back of the
computer, turning on the TV, and then rehooking the VGA cable back to the
computer. What's odd is that I can turn the TV off and back on, just not
for an extended period of time.

Here's what I've tried to fix it:

Disabled screen blanking in BIOS
Set DPMS off in xorg.conf
Disabled screensaver settings in xorg.conf (ServerFlags)
"xset -dpms s off"
"setterm -powersave off"
"setterm -blank 0"
(I know, these are for console, but I'm trying everything here)

I'm at the end of my rope here, any ideas? I can post my xorg.conf if
needed. Thanks in advance!

Does it come on if you press a key on the keyboard (not a key on the
remote--one on the keyboard) or wiggle the mouse? Did you turn off
xscreensaver (the application, it sounds like you've set BlankTime,
StandbyTime, SuspendTime, and OffTime in ServerFlags)?

not wanting to split the cable is a good reason to get the 500. both
tuners work from just one rf input.

Well, there is no free lunch. PVR-500 has an internal splitter, so the
signal strength is halved anyway.

In fact, it can be worse than a separate splitter in some situations.
Suppose that you want two tuners for MythTV and a VCR (or cable box or
plain TV or something). With two separate tuner cards you can use a
3-way balanced splitter with 5.5dB loss on each leg. With a single
PVR-500 you have to use a 2-way splitter (3.5dB loss on each leg)
combined with the 500's internal splitter, so the signal loss for each
tuner will be something like 7dB (on the other hand the VCR leg will
only have the 3.5dB loss).

2 things

ii) if you connect a regular monitor to the VGA out and leave it, what happens?

[mythtv-users] HDTV MythTV parts list

2005-09-14 Thread Brian McEntire
Hello all -

I'm finishing up the parts list for a home theater PC to run Myth.
Primary usage will be as a front-end to feed the HDTV. I plan to use
DVI to connect to the TV.

Here's my parts list, hopefully if I've made any glarring mistakes or ommisions, someone can clue me in:

Mother Board: ASUS P5LD2-VM Socket T (LGA 775) Intel 945G Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 650 (3.4 GHz, HT) Prescott 800MHz FSB 2MB L2 Cache LGA 775 EM64T Processor
Memory: Crucial Ballistix 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel
Video Card: MSI FX5200-TD128LF Geforce FX5200 128MB DDR AGP 4X/8X

Case: generic for now, one I have already. Later: AHANIX MCE301B-A Black Aluminum MicroATX
DVD-R: one I have already
Hard disk: use a spare, then none.

Capture in back-end: PC HD-3000 for OTA ATSC (or possibly unencrypted QAM from cable)

I will start out using a spare disk until it is all working, then I
plan to make it diskless and have it mount the needed OS file systems
over NFS.

What have I missed?

I saw there are lots of Nvidia 5200FX based cards and also higher
numberd GPUs (ie 5600...)  These had varying amounts of memory and
core speeds, etc. Does any of that make a difference for HDTV out? Are
there any brand favorites here or brands to stay away from?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Re: [mythtv-users] TV-Out

2005-09-14 Thread Michael T. Dean

On 09/14/05 12:25, DSanchez wrote:

I have a Wintv Go plus card and i want to set it up to run off my 56
inch wide screen TV. I've read that you can send the video to the TV
via the yellow S-video port on the card, or by making a VGA converter.

Usually, the "yellow" plug is an RCA plug providing a composite video
connection. The S-Video plug is typically black, about 3/8" round, and
has 4 holes in its center. Both composite and S-Video only support
standard definition TV. Based on the fact that it's a 56" wide screen,
I'm guessing you want high-definition.

What method would you suggest? I'm looking for the best quality possible.

How to best connect your system to your TV is dependant on which TV you
have and how you plan to use the TV. There are some who will say that
"DVI" is always the right choice, but in truth, that's not always the case.

For example, Samsung makes a line of 1080p (1920x1080) TV's (the
HL-Rxxx8W DLP TV's). They accept HDMI, DVI, VGA, Component, S-Video, or
Composite connections (those being the ones applicable to Myth users).
We can immediately rule out S-Video and Composite because they provide
only standard definition. HDMI is basically a DVI video connection with
audio connections in the same cable. Although it's possible to get
converters to go from DVI to HDMI, this doesn't help us since there's
already a DVI connection. However, the DVI connection only supports up
to 1080i signals--you cannot send a progressive signal at 1920x1080 via
the DVI connection. Therefore, the only way to get a 1920x1080
progressive image to the TV is via the VGA (analog) connection. Other
TV's have similar issues.

Note, also, that with most modern TV "monitors" (including CRT, PDP,
LCD, DLP), you have to give up on one of three
things: //full-resolution, 1:1 pixel mapping, or no overscan. Depending
on which of the three you choose to give up on, you may need to use a
different connection type. Also, and more importantly, which one you
give up will differently affect the "quality" of different parts of the
system (i.e. video, menus, etc.).

With a "real" computer monitor, you may not have to give up one of the
three. However, computer monitors often support some resolution other
than HDTV native resolutions (i.e. 1920x1200 instead of 1920x1080), so
you may have to display the video with black bars (usually at the top
and bottom) to have a 1:1 pixel mapping for the video.

[mythtv-users] Problems with VGA/RGBHV and Mitsubishi HDTV

2005-09-14 Thread conkel

Hello, I've been browsing through the archives and can't seem to find
anyone else that has had this problem. Here is my hardware setup related
to my problem:

P4 1.7GHz
512MB RAM
Geforce 2 Video Card using VGA out
Mitsubishi WT46809 (connected with breakout cable)
Hauppauge PVR 250

I have gotten MythTV set up and running great. Recording works great with
the PVR-250, I've got it running 1920x1080i and I'm working on getting
Lirc running now.

My problem is that my TV doesn't want to wake up after I turn it off for
an extended period of time. I leave the Myth frontend running and I turn
the TV off when I'm done to prevent burn in. If I leave it off for more
than a half hour when I come back to turn it on it comes on for about 5
seconds and shuts itself off.

I can get it working again by unplugging the VGA from the back of the
computer, turning on the TV, and then rehooking the VGA cable back to the
computer. What's odd is that I can turn the TV off and back on, just not
for an extended period of time.

Here's what I've tried to fix it:

Disabled screen blanking in BIOS
Set DPMS off in xorg.conf
Disabled screensaver settings in xorg.conf (ServerFlags)
"xset -dpms s off"
"setterm -powersave off"
"setterm -blank 0"
(I know, these are for console, but I'm trying everything here)

I'm at the end of my rope here, any ideas? I can post my xorg.conf if
needed. Thanks in advance!

Hi! I run mythtv

Myth says that it burns the mp3 cd but it doesn't
and I can't even choose to burn a audio CD. It's
graymarked. Does anyone know what the trouble might be? Best regards

Why? Although not open-source, they are very supportive
of linux. Much better than ATI.

[mythtv-users] vertical lines from pvr-500

2005-09-14 Thread Marius Schrecker
Hi,

Back now as Sid is on the mend. I've managed to load my pvr-500 using
ivtv 0.3.8 and firmware 0x02050032 and both tuners seem to be working with
audio and video, BUT:

When I play the stream in mplayer using mplayer -vo xv /dev/video0 (or directly
into X11 without the -vo switch) I am getting strange vertical lines appearing
in 3 blocks all the way across the picture (playing in mplayer) like this:

|||
|||
|||

Cheers

Noise is something you'll have to deal with...

However, it's not up to them to provide you with
what you should legally receive - IEEE 1394 (firewire)
unencrypted from their box to your machine. In this
case, firewire from their HD cable box to your
mythbox.

It has nothing to do with being lucky. It has to do with
knowing what you are entitled to. In that sense, you
are their worst nightmare if they are unwilling to
comply with federal law.

Mediacom will never fix their noise problem - won't happen, so i have
to
deal with it.

I live in Ames, IA and *none* of the hardware they send out is
customized - so i would get lucky if they have firewire ports

Ok, i'll probably get the PVR-500 and I'll give in on the video card and
use an nVidia board (for the driver support) for output to the TV

If the cable company is providing piss poor signal you can try what I
did a couple of years ago. Was getting lost of snow and static in the
evenings. After several weeks of phone calls and no results I did the
following. I used a VCR to record an hour of so of the snow and static
I was getting in the evenings. I then found the names and addresses of
the local service manager, customer service manager, and the manager of
the cable company. I then sent a copy of the tape to each with a letter
telling them that if they did not get this corrected in the next week to
disconnect the service.

I got a call from the main manager who gave me a different number to
call when the picture quality degraded. That week I placed two calls on
it and they had someone out that night to work on the problem. They got
it cleared up. Since then I have complained a few times since and they
have come out and resolved the problem. One time they had a bad crimp
on a distribution line that apparently charred the insulation on the
cable. They had a huge hole dug in the yard out front to fix that one.

Not that I know of. You typically input the digital cable box to a
capture card and use an IR blaster to change channels on the cable box.

Personally I just use the analog signals they send over the cable line.
I canceled all the pay channels many months ago. Prefer to get the DVDs
for those movies I want to watch instead of all the repeats the pay
channels seem to have.

Well, if you're willing to stick with only having support for the parts
of the card that have been reverse engineered by open-source developers,
ATI may be much better. However, when you're talking about the
proprietary drivers, NVIDIA's are--without a doubt--much better than ATI's.

As a game developer, you should see the advantage in using NVIDIA's
proprietary drivers over ATI's proprietary drivers from a simple feature
comparison. As I mentioned before--I, like you, am an ATI fan-boy--but,
until ATI provides proper support for Linux, I'll vote with my wallet.
There's no sense in buying an expensive video card from ATI and not
being able to use its features just so you don't have to have an NVIDIA
card. At least with the NVIDIA card, you can use its features. But,
hey, it's your money...

It's still painful to see my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro working as an expensive
framebuffer in a Linux box. I bought it for a system that I could
dual-boot to Windows for games (so at least I got to use the features
sometimes), but now that I'm replacing my gaming system, I have a $400
framebuffer (in a system that doesn't really need a monitor at all)...
I can't even roll down the gaming box to replace my Myth box for my HDTV
upgrade because the ATI drivers don't provide the functionality I need.
