Yes, a second line-up with only digital channels is a good idea. I use a second zipcode, not adjacent but close enough, create the zap2it lineup and assign it to the HD3000 and HD5000 cards. MythTV is clever enough to make the listings show separately for analog and digital channels. One extra thing I had to do manually was to provide the XMLTVID's for the digital channels by going into mythtv-setup -> Channel Editor and typing them in. The XMLTVID's can be found various ways, but one easy way is to use the website http://zap2it.com. When the listings come up, I click on "CLICK HERE TO VIEW YOUR LOCAL DIGITAL STATIONS" and then hold the mouse over the call letters at the left side of the screen. Perhaps the XMLTVID is missing from the Channel data. At least, that's what I have found when the guide shows 'unknown'. When this happens, I enter mythtv-setup, on into the Channel Editor, and add the XMLTVID by typing it into the space provided. Ah Ha! You ask: Where can you find the XMLTVID? Well, one easy way is to bring up the list of channels using the website http://zap2it.com, enter the zipcode appropriately, and wait for the channel listings to appear. Then, if you hold the mouse pointer over the channel call-letters (at the left of the screen), the XMLTVID will appear, somewhere. Using Mozilla, it appears at the bottom of the screen. With Opera, it appears in a little box under the mouse pointer. As soon as enough mythfilldatabase runs are completed, you should start to see fewer 'unknown' boxes and more boxes with program information. Otherwise, we aren't all on> the same page trying to figure out what's going wrong. Well, I think you might have a bit of work ahead of you. "Greyed out" scan for channels is not good. This could mean that the MythTV binaries you are using were not compiled with DVB support included. I'm not sure of that, but it's almost exactly like what happened to my system when I added 2.6.13 kernel with DVB support. The difference is "greyed out" (your system) versus missing scan button (my system). >From earlier posts, I got the feeling that you installed MythTV from RPMs - that is from packages built by someone other than yourself. And that's OK, but if the packages do not include DVB support in MythTV, then you have to install a version that DOES include DVB support. Long ago, I gave up on the RPMs, preferring to download all the software in source form and compile it. Then there is little doubt about what is supported and what isn't. This is my subtle way of recommending that you take a deep breath and install from source. I know that if I were to receive news like the three paragraphs above, I wouldn't be too happy, especially if I had never installed from source before. But I can tell you from my experience of November 2004, when I made the decision to give up on RPMs, it was the right thing to do (for me). The quality of the software packages, IVTV, LIRC, and MythTV too, of course, is so good that I don't worry about it at all. After installing from source several times, I have complete confidence in all the packages. As for the question you asked about clearing all program data and channel settings, you don't have to say Yes - at least not yet. But that's not good news, because it seems very likely to me that you have some re-building to do. At the very least, you have some re-installing to do - specifically a version of MythTV that includes DVB support. I hate to add the following (also not good news), but there is a conflict between the IVTV version of tveeprom.ko and the kernel version of that module. I add this point as a heads-up for after the DVB problems are solved. My system has the conflict, now solved in kind of a temporary way. Thanks for gathering all the information and posting it. Others may not agree with me after reading the bootup messages from the system log, but I do not believe that you are using the DVB drivers. I base this on the line that says: cx2388x v4l2 driver version 0.0.5 loaded And then there are the lines that refer to "registered device(s)" video0 [v4l2], vbi0, and radio0. These are not the devices you want to be created when using the DVB drivers to control the HD3000 card. There should be a line like DVB: registering frontend 0 (pcHDTV HD3000 HDTV)... I cannot tell you what specific steps are needed to correct this, mainly because I cannot sit down in front of your system and have a look at all the files that control the start-up. But it looks like there is a conflict somewhere that causes the V4L driver to be loaded, and the DVB driver to be shoved aside, ignored, whatever. What I can do is attach two files, modprobe.conf and rc.local. These are the two files that I use to control how the tuner cards are recognized, registered, and initialized. But I do this quite reluctantly because your system and my system are different. And I caution that if you DO read through these two files, note the sections that are COMMENTED-OUT. I found that modprobe.conf was not reliable, and moved the start-up commands to rc.local so I could control the order and timing of loading the software. I wish I could tell you 1, 2, 3 simple steps that would help your system work, but it may take a bit of trial-and-error on your part to find the right combination of commands. It took me a few days of experimenting to come up with the two files that I use now. -- MM mm.rc.local Description: Binary data mm.modprobe.conf Description: Binary data ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Also I was only able to get theses buttons to work (up, down, left, right and the number buttons) and while these buttons work, they seem to repeat 4 times for every button I push. Any help would be appreciated. As noted above, I can go through the log books for the MythTV systems and extract the notes. But, I'd rather not make that effort, preferring instead to try to answer specific questions. Here are some of the other things needed to get the ATI Remote Wonder working. Remember that most of these items are part of the LIRC package, but you have to copy some files to the right place(s) for your particular system. You will need a file called "/etc/lircd.conf" that matches your ATI Remote Wonder. Most of the time, you can use one of the files in the LIRC package. But, you can also use irrecord to make your own file, one that you absolutely know will match. To use irrecord, see the man page for it. The man page is pretty good, but I'm not sure how clearly it states that you have to stop other programs from running while you run irrecord. Also, irrecord requires one specific device, /dev/lirc. You may have to create a symbolic link to /dev/lirc0 on your system. But that's not all! The names you chose (or are already in place) in /etc/lircd.conf, must match the names in the file. ~/.mythtv/lircrc. If they don't all match, then only those that do match will work. (Like say maybe, up, down, left, right, ) When the names don't match, the key doesn't work. For example, one person might call the green key at the top "Power", another might call it "On", or "System", or whatever. I had this problem for the green key, and it was hard to track down, but very easy to fix. Please read any and all documentation for LIRC that you can, as well as the mailing list for LIRC. The mailing list can be found on the LIRC website, lirc.org, but news.gmane.org has the archive and it's a bit easier to search there (on gmane). Also please review your LIRC installation, control files, etc. If you come up with what you think is a good installation but it still doesn't work, then post the details of the problem. Then, I downloaded lirc-0.7.2 package from lirc.org. By following the documentation in the lirc-0.7.2 package (and there is a lot of documentation scattered throughout), I was able to make the switch. Before copying all my notes from the process, I recommend that you start with the lirc-0.7.2 (or whatever is the latest) package and see how far you can get. Since you are using both Ubuntu AND Debian, I'll assume that you know your way around Linux. Here's a hint: Only one of the kernel modules, ati_remote -and- lirc_atiusb, can be active. So, you must rename the ati_remote kernel module, AND then you have to adjust the Ubuntu equivalent file for Fedora Core's "/etc/modprobe.conf". By now, it might seem that LIRC isn't worth it, like it might be way too much work. It isn't. The LIRC package is really WELL DONE. I have no regrets whatsoever. In fact, the package is so good, I was able to figure out how to have multiple ATI Remote Wonder remotes controlling multiple MythTV systems. Outside of this discussion, a kind person skilled in the use of Photoshop sent me several copies of the MythTV background image (background.png). Each copy has a different color, making it very easy to tell which MythTV system is being displayed on the TV screen. Separately, I used KDE's KolourPaint to add a small rectangle to the background image. Then, I entered the name of the MythTV system into the rectangle. Once positioned properly, with large enough font, the name remains visible until Watch TV, etc., is selected. Between the two methods, the different color background is quite a bit faster at signalling the brain which system is which. -- MM ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

[mythtv-users] HOWTO for Multiple ATI Remote Wonder remotes
HOWTO for Multiple ATI Remote Wonder(RW) remotesWhy this HOWTO:If you have more than one MythTV system and want to use ATI RW remotesto control them, then this HOWTO can help you do that.Software: This HOWTO was developed using Fedora Core 3, kernel 2.6.13, lirc-0.7.2.Hardware:This HOWTO applies only to the ATI Remote Wonder PC/MAC RF remote control. It does not apply to any other model of the ATI Remote Wonder. References:1. You can read the output from the command, "modinfo lirc_atiusb".2. You can Google for "INFO-BASE file 4028", click on "Cached".Assumptions:This HOWTO assumes that all the software is installed, software installation is not covered. Also assumed is that you started with one remote and areadding a second one.Configuration:Here are the steps to configure one remote to control one MythTV,avoiding any conflict with another MythTV system. 1. Update /etc/modprobe.conf with options for kernel module lirc_atiusb2. Set unique unit code IDs on each ATI RW remote3. Re-boot the system, stop MythTV backend and frontend, stop lirc daemon4. Use irrecord to generate a new, unique /etc/lircd.conf 5. Save the current /etc/lircd.conf, put the newly-generated one in place6. Restart MythTV backend and frontend, restart lircd daemon, -OR- re-boot7. Test the system using multiple remotes and/or multiple unit code IDs You can repeat the steps for a second ATI RW remote and second MythTV system.Just use different values for unit code ID and the mask in /etc/modprobe.conf.Here are the details of each step:1. Update /etc/modprobe.conf After the line "alias char-major-61 lirc_atiusb", add the line"options lirc_atiusb unique=1 debug=1 mask=0x0040".The unique=1 tells lirc_atiusb to use the unit code ID sent by the remote as part of the data when a button is pressed. If unique=1 is not included,lirc_atiusb ignores the unit code ID, stripping it from the data. The debug=1, though not really needed, makes it easier to trouble-shoot problems. The mask=0x0040 tells lirc_atiusb to accept signals only from an ATI RWthat has been configured for unit code ID 07. Sixteen different unit codeIDs, 01 through 16, may be configured. In the 16-bit mask, unit code IDs are numbered starting from the right-most bit, so 0x0040 corresponds tounit code ID 07.You can pick any unit code ID, just be sure that you set the remote so that it corresponds correctly to the mask value. See the next step. 2. Set a unique unit code ID on one of the ATI RW remotesChose a specific ATI RW remote and label it in some way. Use a pieceof tape, a yellow sticky note, something, and put a meaningful labelon it. You could use a number, a letter, or the name of the MythTV system. On the remote itself, Press and Hold the "hand" button (sometimes called "drag").The LED will begin blinking rapidly. Continue to hold the "hand" button untilthe blinking slows down, then release the "hand" button. Next, use the numeric keys to enter the unit code ID. In this example, press 0, then press 7. Finally, press the "hand" key. You may have readin the reference material that the number of blinks when you release the "hand" key is the unit code ID. And it may be, but it blinks so fast thatit's hard to be sure.3. Re-boot the system. As soon as you can, stop the MythTV backend, and thefrontend, in case it is running. Also stop the lirc daemon. On Fedora Core, there are tools to accomplish these steps, but the following will work: /etc/rc.d/init.d/mythbackend stop /etc/rc.d/init.d/lirc stop4. Use irrecord to generate a new /etc/lircd.conf By generating a new /etc/lircd.conf, you are configuring the MythTV systemto match the ATI RW remote from step 2, above. There is a man page for irrecord,as well as good dignostic messages when irrecord can't complete the configuration process.irrecord may refuse to run unless it finds /dev/lirc. If irrecord stops with anerror message about /dev/lirc, you may have to create a symbolic link to /dev/lirc0with a command such as, "ln -s /dev/lirc0 /dev/lirc". irrecord may also timeout, indicating that it didn't receive any signal or data.If irrecord times out, check to be sure that the value you chose for mask=0xcorresponds to the unit code ID you set on the remote. Remember that the unit code ID is the bit position, starting with the right-most bit in the mask. So, unit code ID 01 would be mask=0x0001, 02 would be mask=0x0002, 03 would bemask=0x0004, and so on until unit code 16 would be mask=0x8000. Once irrecord starts, it will ask you to enter the name of a button on the remote, and then press and hold that button until it asks you for the next one. You canenter any name you like for any button, but the names must match the names you have in ~/.mythtv/lircrc, which is the configuration file for controlling MythTV.Before you install the new /etc/lircd.conf, you might want to compare it to thecurrent /etc/lircd.conf. A good program for comparing is tkdiff, usually found as part of the tkcvs package. tkdiff will show, in

Re: [mythtv-users] Multiple ATI Remote Wonders
An update: I went ahead and tried "irrecord" using an ATI Remote Wonder configured to use unit code ID 4. The resulting lircd.conf file was identical to the file generated previously using an ATI RW with the default configuration. The fact that the files turned out to be exactly the same was a complete surprise. So now, I don't know an easy way to generate an lircd.conf that will respond to a uniquely configured ATI RW. A hard way would be to press each key, note which code is being generated by looking in /var/log/messages, and hand-coding the lircd.conf file from that. Other than this "hard way", I am temporarily out of ideas as to how to get the system to respond when this line is added to /etc/modules.conf: options lirc_atiusb unique=1 debug=1 mask=0x0004 But there are a lot more combinations to put through the trial-and-error process, so I'll keep trying. -- MM ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

I've only done the "irrecord" step once, over 90 days ago on July 31. All I remember is that it was quite long and tedious, my notes taken then are really poor, too thin to help me remember what I did. But, doing it again sems to be the next step. This time, I'll take more detailed notes. I'm really motivated to do this because it will allow me to build more MythTV boxes, put them in other rooms, yet still control each one separately with separate Remote Wonders. -- MM ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Entries in /var/log/messages showed "data received" messages, but the MythTV screens didn't change as keys were pressed 2. No debug messages printed by the "dprintk" subroutine in lirc_atiusb.c were ever displayed - making debugging difficult! I went through the documentation in the lirc-0.7.2 package, reading "lircd.conf.atiusb", and read the output from the command, "modinfo lirc_atiusb". I don't see where I went wrong, or left anything out. It's gotten too late today to continue debugging this. That is, recordings are scheduled in the next two hours. There's the name of the channel and the frequency. I name them 9_1, 9_2, etc. and the frequency is 58-1, 58-2, etc. I think I also changed some pull-down menu to specify that the signal is ATSC. And that's it. When watching live TV, I simply type in 9_2 to tune to channel 9, subchannel 2. I echo what DanielK says: rescan for ATSC channels. But I would add the following: upgrade to DVB drivers, if you are actually using V4L. Or, to say it a bit differently, upgrade to kernel 2.6.13 or later. The 9_1, 9_2, etc. notation is what I started with, but after upgrading to 2.6.13, I now enter "clean" channel numbers such as 91, 92, etc. The archive is overloaded with information about how to move on to DVB support of the HD-3000. The system was deleting (AutoExpiring) old, huge HDTV recordings while the HD-3000 was making new recordings. Could this be happening on your system? A look at the backend log might shed some light on "no-sound" recordings. Now, a question about your second paragraph: How do you tune subchannels? On my MythTV system (CVS from last June), all I have is individual channels. Yes, they are numbered 91, 92 - for channel 9 subchannel 1, etc., but I can't tune them in two steps. I did find the limit while upstairs, which was kind of a surprise. The RF receiver is actually right up against the north wall of the house, so I took the remote upstairs and went into the bedroom at the southern end of the house. From there, the remote had no effect. But coming out of the bedroom was close enough for the remote to work. So, I would estimate the distance at about 33 feet, -AND- one flight up. A little more data: on the same floor as the RF receiver, the remote always worked which makes the longest straight line distance about 40 feet. The most recently ordered ATI Remote Wonder, from newegg.com, was $27.50 plus $3.00 UPS shipping = $30.50. This latest remote is just going to be a backup. I'll describe what I did, for what it might be worth to you. Using the Backend Setup, usually called mythtv-setup, I defined a Video Source called 4DTV. (In the U.S., a 4DTV is a satellite receiver.) Again using the Backend Setup, under Input Connections I associated 4DTV with the "Composite 0" entry. Again using Backend Setup, I entered the Channel Editor and defined a new channel. It is easy to miss filling in all the blanks on the screen here. I filled in the Video Source as 4DTV. Arbitrarily, I filled in Channel Name as W4DTV, and filled in the Call Sign as WSAT. Now, the 4DTV Satellite Receiver is defined to MythTV as Channel WSAT. There are no program listings for it in my system, so I use Manual Recording to first select the Channel called WSAT, then set the Start Time/Date/Length, etc. The 4DTV Satellite Receiver has a VCR-like programability, so it is not too difficult to set both MythTV and the 4DTV to turn on at the same time, tune their respective channels, and end up with recorded program(s) from the satellite dish. To some, all of the above might sound complicated, but the MythTV system just took the place of several VCRs that were also programmed to record from the satellite dish by coordinating the start-stop times of the receiver and VCR. -- MM ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

By smaller size, I mean under 2.5 GB; larger size, over 7.5 GB. My guess is that there are quite few MythTV folks that are not aware of the "delete-a-recording-while-recording" I/O bottleneck. They, and I, will be most interested in the results you might observe regarding filesystem stability and how fast XFS can delete a recording concurrent with recording a program. However, I am still experiencing a solid framebufferfreezeup when, after watching a show, I choose eitherof the two delete options available to me. Themachine itself is still running, and mythbackend continues to record, but the frontend locks up.A search of the archives turned up some old (2003)posts which leaned toward ivtv as the issue - however,I've not had any reply from that list so I am begging your indulgence. If any kind souls can offer guidance or suggestions, Iwould be most appreciative. The output is beautiful,so the sooner I can rock-solidify it, the quicker Ican bask in the exceptionally high WAF that the system deserves ;-)Thoughts? Recommendations? Good curry recipes?Deleting a recording while recording is underway, or while some other I/O is active, MAY result in the system hanging. The system may recover in a few seconds, or it may seem to be permanently hung. You can search the archives for the terms "IOBOUND" and/or "discontinuity" and read about more difficulties when a recording is deleted. Some may claim that using a particular filesystem can avoid the IOBOUND condition, but the filesystem might have some other risks associated with it. I use ext3 filesystem because it is reliable and stable, but if I forget to manually delete old Letterman, Leno, etc., shows, then I get corrupted recordings. The backendlog shows IOBOUND messages that correspond exactly with the times of the corruption. I would like to (someday) ask for MythTV to provide support for scheduling "UN-recording" of programs. Instead of AutoExpire happening immediately within two minutes of the start of recording a program, the delete would be deferred until the time when the backend determines that it is idle. At that time, the backend has nothing to do, and usually shuts down the system just after scheduling the system to power-on in time for the next recording. Besides scheduling the next power-on, the backend could check if there had been any "UN-recordings" requested, delete those recordings, and then shut down. You might want to check the backendlog on your system for any IOBOUND messages that correspond to the times when your system hung. -- MM ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

But it didn't take long to find that the noise of the computer bothered me when I read the paper, listened to the radio, and stuff like that. So, I installed nvram-wakeup. Once you have your MythTV system running more or less like the VCRs do (come on when it's time to record, record, then shut off), it's quite easy to specify how long in advance you want the machine to power on. I have mine set to three (3) minutes, but it could be set to anything (I think). So, if you know that you want to use your MythTV system around say, 5pm, you could set the various parameters and have the system power/boot up well in advance. This worked perfectly unencrypted, but itshardly ideal. I have a similar combination - WG311T and FC3 - using WEP, working well. Was it a "minimum of fuss" ? No, but right close to minimum, perhaps because I also have the companion to the WG311T - the WGT624 Wireless Firewall Router. Surprisingly smooth madwifi installation followed by some trial-and-error to get the WEP keys working. This all happened some months ago, but I remember that I started with no keys at all, just to see if the equipment would work. After bringing up the network connection without WEP, I entered a single WEP key into the WGT624 and the same key into /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ath0. The first try at a WEP key didn't work, so after searching forums and mailing lists, I entered the key in quotes followed by the word "restricted". The line in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ath0 is: KEY="XX restricted" After this last bit of tweaking, the wireless connection has been stable and reliable. If you still have problems after trying to get your new card working, I can add more information from all the notes made during the trial-and-error period. Similar setup, yes - IVTV, HD-3000 using DVB, and Air2PC (HD-5000 version). Besides the DVB differences, I see one more which I think could be the problem. I have moved up to 2.6.13 kernel, after which I followed the HOWTO on www.hd5000.com. If I remember, there was one post a long time ago from someone who had patched a 2.6.12 kernel, but the work was beyond my feeling of peace-of-mind. That's why I waited for the new driver that works with 2.6.13. After following the HOWTO, I rebuilt IVTV, NVRAM-WAKEUP, LIRC, and booted the system. As you are doing, I found that I had to discard the tveeprom module from the IVTV package and put the kernel's back in place. Following that episode, I plugged in the HD-5000 card and was disappointed to see KUDZU configure it as an ethernet card. KUDZU pretty much hosed my /etc/modprobe.conf file, which I had old versions of. After a few more re-boots, and reconstructing /etc/modprobe.conf, KUDZU stopped pausing and modifying /etc/modprobe.conf. The system now boots without pausing, cleanly, automatically per the recording schedule, and the three tuners (PVR-350, HD-3000, HD-5000) are all working well. The tveeprom situation is still a problem, but so far, has only caused one standard-definition program from being completely recorded. It was the Pilot Episode of "Freddie" - so there was no real loss! But I am hopeful that the IVTV developers will resolve the differences between the two versions of tveeprom, soon. -- MM ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Another drive, another filesystem... perhaps there is a better solution. Just as mythfilldatabase can be scheduled, I would prefer to see a similar option for AutoExpire. Two ideas come to mind, but I'm sure there are many others. One choice could be to add an option to mythtv-setup allowing a window for looking through the recordings and cleaning out the "too-many-episodes" candidates. Another choice could be that when the system determines it is idle (and about to shutdown), look through the recordings and clean out the old recordings. (To me, this is like having the office cleaning crew come in and prepare the work area for the next workday.) Depending on the specific filesystem to instantaneously erase what the recording process took half, one, two hours or more to create, seems to be misplacing the responsibility for cleanup. As for the specific test of avoiding the discontinuity caused by AutoExpire, the test was successful. That is, before recording Letterman and Charlie Rose last night, I manually deleted just one Letterman show. And scanning the Charlie Rose recording all the way to the end showed no glitches at all. It's only a single test, but that's enough for me to believe that AutoExpire of a huge recording during the recording made by the PVR-350 causes an out-of sync problem. (I'm referring only to my system here.) Although I didn't mention it before, there is a similar discontinuity in the recording of Letterman at exactly the same time as in Charlie Rose. But, the audio and video remain in sync. A few seconds of Letterman at the point of the IOBOUND are just lost. For now, I'll either manually delete old recordings, or change the schedule to minimize the problem (if that's possible). Eventually, I'd like to make a formal feature request, probably asking for an option similar to the mythfilldatabase scheduling option. -- MM ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Going back over the logs one more time, I found an event that occurred three seconds before the out-of-sync discontinuity in the Charlie Rose program. That event is the AutoExpire of the oldest Letterman show. The size? Sixteen gigabytes - 16GB ! That's because I have the recording set for not just one hour, but over two hours to also record Craig Ferguson. (CBS doesn't start their programs on the zero-zero mark in a minute, so I gang the two shows together for ease-of-viewing). Is seems quite likely to me that the EXT3 filesystem cannot delete the 16GB file fast enough, thus causing the IOBOUND condition. A few months ago, I observed the EXT3 filesystem's long delays in deleting old recorded programs during the preparation for adding a new physical volume to the logical volume that makes up the file storage for recorded programs. I could enter all the "rm" commands as fast as I wanted, but the system took betwen one and two minutes to complete all the requests. It will be easy to "Pre-Expire" a couple of old Letterman shows, manually, and then see if Charlie Rose is recorded without any discontinuity. -- MM ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

[mythtv-users] Charlie Rose via PVR-350
Bear with me. I'm looking for anyone else who might observe the following: For weeks now, I have recorded Charlie Rose on KTCI, in Minnesota. In every show, at random points, the audio and video get out of sync by a few seconds. The show is still listenable, but watching the screen is like Water Torture. So, to see if it was a KTCI problem (yeah, right), I switched from KTCI to KSMQ. Aha! Same problem! My guess it's the Charlie Rose show's problem, but it still could be my system's problem. Next week, I plan to add an Air2PC card to the system in question. During that change, I will record Charlie Rose on a completely separate system and see if the problem follows along. But between now and then, I would be interested to know if anyone else has observed the out-of-sync problem while watching Charlie Rose. (I have a feeling that very, very few folks record, let alone even WATCH Charlie Rose, but my curiousity has gotten the better of me.) No, I don't know what "Single Record - Not Listed" means, at least not for sure. But, Sunday afternoon, I happened to notice something quite similar, a line in Upcoming Recordings saying, "Not Found" (or maybe "Not Listed"). ABC-TV changed the name of their 36 Greatest NFL Moments show, which I had scheduled days ahead of time, to something else. I looked in the EPG, saw that the name was much shorter, and then scheduled a singled-record of the newly-named program. My guess is that the program would NOT have been recorded unless I scheduled the newly-named show, OR punched an override with the remote on the Upcoming Recordings list. So, after all that long-winded blather, do you suppose that the names of Your Movies were changed from the time you scheduled them ? Just an idea. Is anyone else having this problem, and is there any > way to fix it? Anyone else? Yes, I noticed the same thing within the last two weeks. What drew my attention to it was when I checked on upcoming recordings and found quite a few shows missing. (Letterman, Leno, Conan, and Craig) It seems like Zap2IT has a very specific memory loss - Late Nite TV. While I couldn't exactly "fix" it, I did change the parms on the mythfilldatabase to update/refresh today (and tomorrow, I think), and I changed the frequency of updates from three/four days to one day. I didn't like doing the latter step, because it puts more load on ZAP2IT. On the other hand, ZAP2IT is the cause of the problem, so they get their lumps. If I were a consciencious person, the right thing to do would be to revert back to the earlier mythfilldatabase settings, say in a month, and see if the NO DATA problems recur. -- MM ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Well, after a period of stubborness, I finally DID try avidemux. And that worked, really well. Commercial_cut worked too, but when I tried to use it on the program with the musical clip I wanted, it turned out a 38-byte file. Of course, 38 bytes is just a tad short of enough to hold a five-minute video clip. Thanks for your two-word message of advice. Re: [mythtv-users] Reveiw fanless Zalman chasis
How come no one has mentioned the price of the Zalman chassis ? What I found was the list price is $1350.00, discounted to $1200.00. Repeating: It's only the chassis: the case, cooling gear, nice feet, etc. You still gotta buy a motherboard, CPU, graphics card, video capture card(s), hard drives, oh well, you can see where the total is headed. It sure looks like a great piece of gear to have, but unless one of 'em just walks on in to my house, on its own, I'm not likely to fork out an extra $1K just for a case ! -- MM ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
[mythtv-users] How to compile commercial_cut
Trying to compile commercial_cut, version 0.5, the make command ends immediately with the following: == [EMAIL PROTECTED] commercial_cut-0.5]$ make cc -std=gnu99 -o commercial_cut \ -lmysqlclient -lz -lcrypt -lnsl -lm -lssl -lcrypto \ -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 commercial_cut.c /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lmysqlclient collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make: *** [commercial_cut] Error 1 [EMAIL PROTECTED] commercial_cut-0.5]$ which cc == The system is AMD64, running Fedora Core 3, with MythTV compiled from CVS. All the lib's listed above seem to be present, so I'm lost wondering what the problem is. I did some searching of the mythtv archive, but didn't find anything useful, yet, so I'm asking for help. I'll mention the ultimate goal here: I want to capture part of a recorded program, and make that part a separate file that I can play over and over again. It's the Bettye Lavette song from Letterman, "Little Sparrow". Maybe commercial_cut isn't the best tool to accomplish the ultimate goal, but I have no experience, -none-, trying to edit recorded programs, and commercial_cut looks like it might work. Mike, Thank you SO much for the explanation. All this time I kept thinking, "How can these idiots keep referring to the ATI Remote Wonder as an IR device?", because I have one and it emits NO IR whatsoever. Now I see that it should be possible for me to abandon the kernel module, ati_remote, in favor of LIRC support. I much prefer LIRC support, which I use in another MythTV box, because I can execute whole commands and scripts with it. With ati_remote kernel module, all I can do is send keystrokes, which makes it very hard to execute scripts. Your entertainment setup sounds extremely nice, quite clearly the "cleanest of all possible home-theater setups". Congratulations on building what sounds like an amazing system. After a day of Google and MythTV archive searching, I found enough information to come up with a combination of steps that cause the system to boot BY ITSELF at a predetermined time. I was shocked when I heard the system running, because I had given up on waiting and walked out of the room. Since I hadn't witnessed it, I immediately repeated the steps and it all worked. Just Amazing! Here are the steps I took: 1. Added the following line to /etc/sysconfig/clock, but it may not be needed. I have to remove this line and run the test again. CLOCKFLAGS="--directisa" 2. Added the following lines to /boot/grub/grub.conf, as entry number 4, counting from 0. title PowerOff savedefault --default 0 halt 3. To test, I issued the following two commands, and then rebooted the machine. Upon reboot, the machine immediately powered itself off. nvram-wakeup -C /etc/nvram-wakeup.conf -s $((`date +%s` + 601)) echo "savedefault --default=4 --once quit" | grub 4. About five minutes after the nvram-wakeup command was issued, the machine powered on by itself and booted the default grub entry, 0. The default line in grub.conf is 0. Here are some of the specifics about the machine's software: It's running Fedora Core 3, but with a 2.6.12-rc6 kernel, grub-0.95-3, and nvram-wakeup-0.97. I mention the version of grub because in some of the searching, I found that there seems to be different versions of it depending on the Linux distribution. Also, some of the parameters I used, such as --default= and --once, I couldn't find documented in either a 2002 or a 2004 version of grub.pdf. Getting this A8N-SLI to power on by itself is a major step forward, at least to me. By getting this machine to act like a commercial VCR, powering on and off at the appropriate times, moves it closer to becoming a candidate for daily use. Right now, it's only used occassionally to actually record something. It's main use is for trying things out (such as nvram-wakeup), and then putting those things that are found to work into the daily-use system. Of course, nvram-wakeup will have to be tested on the daily-use machine, because it's motherboard is an ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe. But I figure that the A7N8X-E will work too, since it's a much more popular board for MythTV systems. -- MM ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
[mythtv-users] nvram-wakeup for the A8N-SLI
The ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard would hardly seem to be a popular choice for building a MythTV system, so you may not find the following very useful. I chose it, 1) to try the PCI Express features, and 2) because it has a lot of SATA connectors. It's an AMD64 board, and I also wanted to build a second MythTV system specifically for x86_64 architecture. And, it's all worked out very well. I compiled mythtv, ivtv, and a 2.6.12-rc6 kernel without any serious problems. The downsides are: lots of noise from the fans, and lack of support for x86_64 architecture (in some packages), which brings me to the subject - nvram-wakeup. I downloaded the tarball, nvram-wakeup-0.97.tar.bz2. There's a lot of README stuff to go through, almost enough to decide to leave the system running 24/7. But I pressed on and tried to compile it. That stops dead with an x86_64 error, so I removed the CCFLAGS item, "-mcpu=i686". Compile succeeds after that change. Later on, I found that the Debian folks had made that same change. There doesn't seem to be any "make install" step in any of the README's, so I just went ahead and ran it after running "make man". Everything seemed to get to the right place, so I tried the step in the README that says to try nvram-wakeup in debug mode. Sure enough, the A8N-SLI is not one of the boards that nvram-wakeup knows about yet. So, here's where I stopped and decided to post this message to see if anyone else has tried nvram-wakeup on the A8N-SLI. If you have, please reply to the mailing list. Since the chances are small that anyone at all is using nvram-wakeup on an A8N-SLI, I'll keep going with it, next thing to try is the "guess-helper" script. I'll post whatever I can find out about this software-motherboard combination. -- MM ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

No sign of anything else. I'll add a little more information about the system. It's running mythtv and mythweb, no other plugins. After checkout from CVS, I compiled only mythtv, got it running but had the problem of HDTV channels with the underscore character (_) in them. Advice from the archives was to install mythweb and use it to delete the unwanted channels. I installed mythweb, and it worked just fine. MythBrowser would be a welcome addition for looking up things without having to haul my carcass out of the big chair and going over to another system to do it. Is there some prerequisite needed during the installation of mythtv's plugins that I did not perform because I have really installed only mythtv ? The help text for mythfrontend says that you can specify a plugin on its command line, so I tried that. The mythfrontend log shows entries saying that it can't find any plugin named /usr/local/lib/mythtv/plugins/liblibmythbrowser.so I must have missed a step somewhere along the way. [mythtv-users] AutoExpireDefault in settings table
The Question: Can I add AutoExpireDefault to the settings table in mythconverge ? The background: Comparing two separate MythTV systems' "settings" tables, the older system built in 2004 has AutoExpireDefault in the database. The newer system, built fresh this month, does not have AutoExpireDefault. This post to the Dev List, may explain why there is a difference between the two systems' databases: http://gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/dev/135957?search_string=AutoExpireDefault;#135957 I used phpMyAdmin to compare the two "settings" tables and discovered the AutoExpireDefault difference (among other differences, of course). On the newer system, it is quite annoying to set AutoExpire for each program to be recorded. On the older system, AutoExpire is always set for programs to be recorded. If it is possible to add AutoExpireDefault to the settings table, WITHOUT disabling/destroying the database, could it be done with phpMyAdmin, or from the command line, or some other way ? When I tried to use mythtv-setup, it failed to start with the following error: mythtv-setup: error while loading shared libraries: libmythtv-0.18.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory But there is such a file, located in the directory: /usr/local/lib, so this is quite a mystery to me. [mythtv-users] CVS build Tuesday - no mythtv-setup
A CVS build on Tuesday morning (21June) results in no mythtv-setup being built or installed. This link may be of interest: http://mythtv.org/pipermail/mythtv-dev/2005-June/037420.html So, the system I'm currently updating to use the DVB drivers for the HD-3000 card is just on-hold, until a CVS fix is applied. Or, maybe there is a way to build and install just the single module, mythtv-setup, but I have no clue how to do that. There is probably no other alternative to waiting for a CVS fix, but if you can think of another way, I'd be interested. -- MM ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

One difference between the two systems is that mine was built from CVS as of Saturday, June 11, 2005. It appears that TV Settings -> General has Enable Auto Expire checked, but the only way I've actually got a recording marked is to go into Watch Recordings, select one, press the "i" key, and then press the Auto Expire bar. SO, the question- if Enable Auto Expire is checked, shouldn't recordings be marked that way ? Or maybe there is another global setting that I have missed. What are you seeing, regarding Auto-Expire, if you are on 18.1 or later ? Thanks. -- MM ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

I'm running 0.18 > on gentoo linux. Log extract below. James, The same symptom(s) here, "No PIDs set ...". But I was able to fix it, restoring the affected system, here's what I found. The "starting channel" for the HD-3000 card had been removed from the channel lineup. By violating "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" rule, I had run another Scan on the Channel Editor screen of mythtv-setup. That scan failed to find KTCADT, channel number 21. I had set the starting channel number for the HD-3000 card to 21. Right after that scan, I could no longer watch or record from the HD-3000. At first, I thought the card burned up. So I tried using dvbtraffic to test the card. This link was a big help: http://pchdtv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=688&highlight=dvbtraffic The card was good, so then I knew it was something I had done. I looked thru the channels.conf file, found the frequency for KTCA. Then I looked thru the list of frequencies on Channel Editor -> Advanced. Either there was no entry with KTCA's frequency, or that entry had all zeros, I can't remember. But that told me that MythTV no longer knew anything about KTCA. So, I went back to Channel Editor -> Scan for channels, and scanned for only one signal (UHF 34) - not a full scan. This time the scan found KTCA and added KTCADT to the list of scanned channels. After starting the backend and the frontend, I could watch and record (again) from the HD-3000 card. Well, that was kind of a long-winded story, and it might not have anything to do with your problem. But the symptom(s) seemed similar enough. -- MM ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Chris, Thank you very much for your candid and complete reply. Mythweb is up and running, mainly due to the contents of conf.php. That is, your instructions are quite good and I thank you for giving the MythTV users a very useful tool. Ten months ago, I had Mythweb up and running on an old system that used all RPMs. I knew nothing of how anything worked then, everything just worked! This year, I am using all CVS versions and want to know how everything works, so I pressed (a bit too hard) for an answer to the conf.php item. It took me three tries to get Mythweb up this time. After each try, I went back to the conf.php file, compared my work with the steps you have in there. Each time, I had to correct something, and one less error message came out. Here is a line from the mythweb package's file, conf.php: define('server_domain', $_SERVER['SERVER_NAME'] ? $_SERVER['SERVER_NAME'] : $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST']); The above is supposed to be all on one line, it's folded on my screen as I compose this message. Would anyone who has actually changed this line successfully, please post their version of this line? I have searched the archives and found requests for this same information, as recently as March 2005. But none of the responses includes actual examples. The line above is so, so confusing. [mythtv-users] HD-3000 firmware upload
After a bit of work installing kernel 2.6.12-rc6 and an HD-3000 card, I'm able to watch HDTV using only the DVB driver that comes with that kernel. Nothing from the pcHDTV website was installed. But the gyrations I have to go thru to get the card up and running seem very primitive. Here's what I do, all by hand after the system boots: As root, modprobe cx88-dvb As mythtv, azap kmsp Right after the azap command, there is a short delay while the firmware is uploaded, then the signal is displayed and the happy string, "FE_HAS_LOCK" is typed out! The system log has all the details. But there must be a much, much smoother way to get the firmware uploaded. The "modprobe cx88-dvb" command can be put into /etc/rc.d/rc.local, which will smooth-out that part of it. But that's not enough to get the firmware loaded. How else might the firmware be uploaded, without having to manually enter a command, such as "azap kmsp" ? You used the phrase, "edit the channel numbers". To be clear, you really mean the Channel Number field on the screen where an individual channel can be edited? I tried that, but I didn't know what I was doing - and got nowhere, or course. Now, I'm going to try entering the XMLTV ID in the field near the bottom of that screen and see if mythfilldatabase will retrieve the correct data. I can watch TV now - the two buttons showed up AFTER the following steps: ./configure --enable-dvb make clean make make install When I compiled mythtv last Thursday, it took only 5 minutes. This time it took the expected 17 minutes. The two buttons appeared - just as in your screen shot. I did the Scan for channels(s) - took a while - but it found the strong signals. After that, I started the backend and the frontend, selected Watch TV, and a picture appeared. Thanks again for telling me about the two buttons, that was the key to finding out my last mythtv compile did not result in the correct output. The 'make clean' must have reset everything so that the latest compile made things come out right. Now, next problem - how to get the Guide Data channel numbers to match the channel numbers created by the 'Scan for channels(s)'. Surely, someone - even many someones - must have solved that problem. I sure hope so, because all I can do is Watch TV, and I'd really like to be able to Record TV, too :) ! -- MM ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Phill, I finally was able to try the steps you outlined (above). When I got to step 6) - the Channel Editor, I didn't see anything about a scan, Automatic or otherwise. There weren't places to enter frequencies or bandwidths either. Should I have run mythfilldatabase before trying the Channel Editor? Another question: where inside the Channel Editor does the Scan option appear? Maybe I haven't compiled mythtv with the right set of options on the ./configure command. I used ./configure --enable-dvb, and it seemed to compile without any problems. Any further hints you might think of would be most welcome. On 6/10/05, Michael Haan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Actually, you can hit 'Y' to switch cards. Also, if the card you're > on has multiple inputs, you can hit 'C' to switch inputs. Thanks, Michael. Actually, I use 'Y' on another, older system with two HD-3000 cards in it. That system doesn't use DVB, and has nothing but HDTV, so it was no test of MythTV when I would enter 2_1, for example. What I'm wondering is, will MythTV Automatically switch cards (between HD-3000 and PVR-350) when a digital channel is entered on an analog channel being watched (having chosen Watch TV). It's not important at all, I was just curious how MythTV handles the analog-digital combination. I'm preparing to follow the steps outlined by Phill, and hoping for a good outcome. -- MM ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
Re: [mythtv-users] After FE_HAS_LOCK, what next?
Phill & Michael, Thank you both for your advice and directions. I thought there were some earlier discussions about DVB and HD-3000, so I'll go search them out. Also, I remember reading about scanning channels, but wasn't sure if those discussions referred to MythTV. I have never seen the place(s) in MythTV's Channel Editor where scans are offered, so again I'll have to go back in there and look for the option/choice/etc. Since the HD-3000 card is being added to a system with an already-working PVR-350, I have been wondering if/how MythTV can tell the difference when Watch TV is selected. I know it will choose the first available tuner. But what will happen if, while watching an analog station, a digital station is selected by typing '2_1' for example. I'll just have to wait to see if MythTV will know that it has to switch cards at that point. [mythtv-users] After FE_HAS_LOCK, what next?
After installing an HD-3000 card, all of the dvb-apps package, and the firmware, the azap program showed that the card is working with several channels having strong signals. FE_HAS_LOCK shows up along with high signal values, error rates of all zeros. What are the next steps to getting mythtv to tune and record ? Using the Guide (EPG) to record from the HD-3000 results in just snow. So, I looked in mythtv-setup's Channel Editor and found that the "Default" was set for all channels, "Default" being NTSC. Does that mean going thru the Channel Editor and changing all the HDTV channels to ATSC? Since the system has a working PVR-350, I'd guess that only the channels numbered like 2_1, 9_1, 9_2, etc., have to be changed to ATSC. What other steps have to be done before mythtv will recognize and record from the HD-3000 card ? Some say that CVS won't compile, while others say that RPM packages are broken. Your advice makes me feel that I'll get the HD-3000 working. My other problem (dvb-path) is solved. I misunderstood the output from ./configure --help, thinking that the file in brackets was NOT to be used. That file, frontend.h, in fact IS THE FILE to be used. [mythtv-users] What to use for dvb-path and a dvb-apps question
In mythtv-setup, I tried to add an HD-3000 card as a Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) device. In the center of the screen was a line telling me to recompile with DVB support. Yesterday, when I compiled mythtv (0.18.20050523-1) I noticed that make --help showed --dvb-path. So, I Googled around, but didn't find a solid answer, and left out both --enable-dvb AND --dvb-path. Bad idea. So, now I must recompile mythtv, but what is the value to use for --dvb-path ? I should also ask about where and how to get/install dvb-apps, assuming I can figure out what to use for dvb-path. The kernel is 2.6.12-rc6, with all the Video Adapters compiled as modules, including CX88_DVB. There is also a PVR-350 card installed and working, using ivtv-0.3.6e. If you are using a 2.6.12 kernel and have compiled mythtv with DVB support, would you post what you used for dvb-path ? Re: [mythtv-users] Adding an HD-3000 to a PVR-350-only system
Thanks to all who replied for the details of your experiences. From them, I can see that "patience" is the word for me. I'll wait until after moving to a 2.6.12 kernel before adding an HD-3000. After re-reading all the replies, I feel lucky to have avoided some unpleasant experiences trying to force-fit the HD-3000 into the 2.6.11 kernel. [mythtv-users] Adding an HD-3000 to a PVR-350-only system
On a newly built system running Fedora Core 3 with this kernel, 2.6.11-1.27_FC3, I would like to add a single HD-3000 card to the single PVR-350 card already installed and working. The PVR-350 is being used only for video capture, not playback. I've seen some good guides for installling HD-3000 cards, but it's difficult to tell which of them really applies to the kernel on this new system. For example, can I use DVB drivers (preferred) without having to re-compile this kernel? It's a bit confusing to read Angel Li's Air2PC Guide which does compile the kernel, and then read Jarod Wilson's Howto where he states that he is using a Stock FC3 kernel. Then, there's the question of which of the tarballs on the pcHDTV site is the DVB tarball. I can surely get there using the trial-and-error method, but I'm just wondering if anyone has started out with a PVR-3/250 card and then added an HD-3000 card. If you have gone this route already, what were the main steps you took? [mythtv-users] Confused about lirc_i2c
Where does the lirc_i2c module come from? On an up-to-date Fedora Core 3 system, I cannot find anything named lirc_i2c. The system has MythTV installed from CVS and IVTV installed from source (ivtv-0.2.0-rc3j). In the IVTV documentation for Lirc support, the Installation steps indicate that there should be several binaries installed, one of which is called lirc_i2c. So this is what confuses me... where is the lirc_i2c module? It looks like is is not included as part of the Fedora Core 3 distribution. How could this be? Maybe I made some mistake along the way that removed lirc_i2c. If you are among those who build-from-source, can you help clear up my confusion? Re: [mythtv-users] ivtv compile and build
Thanks all, for your replies. The RPM route is still an option of course. My first MythTV system, now dismantled, was successfully built using Jarod's guide and Axel's RPMs. At the moment, I would like to be able to use CVS, compile-from-source methods, and make this new AMD64 system work. But, I remain open to switching to the pre-built approach, and taking advantage of all the hard work done by Jarod, Axel, et al. -- MM ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
[mythtv-users] ivtv compile and build
Progress so far: 1. Fedora Core 3 installed on a new AMD64 machine. 2. MythTV downloaded from CVS, as of today (25 May). 3. Successful compile, mythtv-setup runs thru General just fine. Next step, installing the drivers for a PVR-350 card. Would anyone care to offer places to look for a set of steps that would help me compile, build, and install ivtv ? I've been looking for Blogs, Howto's, mailing-list messages, where someone might have listed the steps necessary for compiling ivtv from source and getting all the other pieces put together. Right now, it looks like a much larger task than all the preceding steps combined. For example, it appears that the kernel source must be installed just so ivtv will compile. Eventually, assuming I can get ivtv installed by compiling from source, I will document the process, so anyone else who goes the AMD64 route can have something to refer to. I use VLC sometimes to see what the quality of a particular HDTV signal is, BEFORE bringing up mythfrontend. There's a difference in how the two handle weak signals, with mythfrontend just sort of hanging. VLC on the other hand, stumbles along with POPs and CRACKLEs and lots of error messages.
