[newbie] Ram Usage

1999-04-23 Thread Ben

I was just testing out some new commands I learned tonight, and was startled to see
that Linux is using such a large amount of ram. I was also concerned about the
 "please recompile me" message.

I've included the output of my procinfo -a command at the end of this message, if
anyone is so inclined to take a look.

If fact, the following example was taken during a kde session with netscape, licq, and
the gimp running. When I ran the command with kde closed and no programs running, it
reported that even more Memory was being used? ( I ran it after a reboot if that
matters?)

On a side note, I recall someone was having trouble with Star Office. I installed it
today for the first time and created a step by step journal for my own future
reference. It seems to be running well, so if like I could mail it to you, just drop
me a line.

Thanks In Advance,
Ben

You need to let your machine know who is your DNS server.
Edit the account setup - the third tab is for DNS, so put your
ISP's server ip addresses in there.

The line wrapping should be set on outgoing messages. Certainly the

SMTP server/account? POP3 is working.

Rerun the Mandrake install. Use Disk Druid to delete the Linux swap and /

Check to make sure the Outgoing SMTP server is named correctly in the

affect sending mail in Netscape.

Just stick the CDROM in and start a new installation (and be sure to choose

 Dear all,

As much as I hate to admit this: it seems to me the connection to my ISP on
Linux is significantly slower than using that Other Operating System (the 98

Especially dowloading pages with large objects (like pictures) I get a lot
of "Stalled" warnings in the status-bar of Netscape.
Checking the KPPP detail-window I see a lot of large *gaps* between peeks
and most of the time the peaks are not *fully streched*.

 I'm using a Xircom CEM-56 LAN/MODEM-card (V.90/K56flex up to 56000 bps) on a
 IBM Thinkpad 380Z.
The modem reports a connection speed of 115K in the terminal window.

Should I think about optimizing modem settings (if so: how and what) or is
the problem cache-related. Or (and why not) is there something else wrong?

 Thanx,

Daan (yes, that is with double -a-)

A couple things that you could do:

1) Add this to the bottom of /etc/rc.d/rc.local:

setserial /dev/modem spd_vhi

This will enable the modem to be set to 115200 and allow the
compression to work better.

2) Add this to your KPPP "PPP Options" screen:

novj

This will disable the Van Jacobsen compression that causes
problems with some ISPs (and will cause the speed drop
that you mention).

3) You _should_ be able to set the port speed in KPPP to 115200. Try
setting it and see if the modem still works. If it doesn't, drop the
speed back down to 56.

4) You _could_ try adding this to the "PPP Options" section of KPPP:

mtu 296
mru 296

These will cause the modem (actually, the TCP/IP software)
to transmit and receive in smaller packets. It helps here,
but I'm not sure whether it will help your situation.

Good luck!

I have it set as my secondary slave (My normal cd is my secondary

You have a couple options on this. First, you could visit the WordPerfect
site and see if they have any printer drivers for your specific printer.
I've found (and I have to admit this was with an old Epson dot-matrix) that
the WP drivers worked better than the second option when I tried them.

If they don't have specific drivers for your printer, you'll need to
configure a printer in WordPerfect called "Passthrough Postscript". This
will create a postscript file out of your document, then pass it to lpd to
filter and print. Once you've got that printer available, you want to set
the destination for that printer to "lp". That'll send it on to the lpd on
your system (and that should work fine since your PostScript test worked
earlier).

The difference I saw between the two drivers is probably largely negated by
printers that are more modern than the 24-pin dot matrix printer I was
working with. I've been extremely pleased with both the native WP driver
and lpd for output on my HP LaserJet 6L.
