[newbie] Need a strong convincing argument

1999-06-25 Thread Anonymous

Hi All,
Sorry my mail is a little long. Please be advised of that.
I have got a friend whom is trying to move away from the Windows
environment, but is having a lot of concerns on whether he'll succeed
or not with Linux. He believes that because Linux is being developed
by hackers throughout the world and it does not have a certified
authentication, it will not last for longer. I've tried my best to
give him an overall picture of Linux plus the many things he can with
it, but don't think I was convincing enough. I even showed him some
of my computational work, and the performance of Linux, and many
technical details that Linux has over Windows. But because the
software that I run has a Windows counterpart which does the job for
him he was skeptical, although I could sense how impressed he was
with Linux, Kde, Gnome , AfterStep and other things.
He has asked me this simple question: Suppose that he gets some
work done at work under Excel, Word or Corel and he wants to
continue the same work at home where he has a Linux machine. What
chances has he got in porting is work from the Dos environment to
Linux.
My answer to that was that he could either install Staroffice or
WordPerfect in his home machine so that he could port the job. But
that was all said in theory, since I do not have either of the two
tools in my machine to prove a point, he did not seem very convinced.
Can anybody give me more reasons to convince him. Anyway I'll install
Soffice or WP to convince him.
Thanks in advance for any info.

RE: [newbie] Mandrake and DSL

1999-06-25 Thread Anonymous

Hi
Aaron,

It is
not set up as a bridge, I heard from someone else the US West used to do that.
Under windows the only settings are obtain IP address automatically and use DHCP
for wins resolution.

On the
bridge they have you set. (off the top of my head and probably not
exact)

set
ppp wan0-0 ipcp 0.0.0.0
set ppp wan0-0 dns 0.0.0.0
set ppp wan0-0 login login name
set ppp wan0-0 login password my password
set nat enabled
set server restart enabled
set dhcp server enabled

I
think that is it. I messed around with it most of last night and made no
progress. I am condsidering going back to a more mature distribution with good
documentation.

Any
thoughts? Thanks for your help.

well, when I was on US West, the cisco 675 was a
bridge, not a router, so it has no IP of it's own. you need to set the
computer to DHCP. I dunno how to do that in Linux except at install,
but I'm 99% sure if you are assigning a IP to a us west dsl bridge it's
wrong. How is your win box setup? Betcha 100 bucks obtain
IP address from server is checked

Aaron do you mean all I need to do is change the eth0 interface
to a DHCP protocol ? Or is there more to setting up DHCP than that. The
information I have listed below regarding the Cisco is right out of the
USWest book and does get the Router logged in.

I just need to make the Linux box talk to the

Can some one give me the information (step by
step) to get my Linux machine hooked up to my DSL line. I am
lost and have tried everything. Either it is a very complicated
process or I have missed something obvious.

My current setup is:

Mandrake 6.0 with two ethernet
cards

eth1
IP address is 192.168.1.2
Subnet is
255.255.255.128

eth0

IP address is 192.168.1.1
Subnet is
255.255.255.0

I have a Cisco 675 external router. Basically
all I can tell you is it is running in PPP mode, has NAT and
DHCP server enabled and ipcp has been set to 0.0.0.0 and DNS has
been set to 0.0.0.0. It works when I plug it into a Windows
machine !!

I am using USWest DSL and ISP service. I DO
NOT have a static IP address.

Beyond the above address's which I have
entered using the netcfg what else do I need to set
up ? Is there anything that needs to be configured under the
routing tab.

Eventually (like tommorrow.. hehe) I want to
go back to IP masquerading as I have done in the past with a
dial up connection. .. I guess I need to get the Linux machine
to talk to the internet on its own first.

Thank you very much in advance for any help
you can provide.

I have installed linux several times. This procedure always works.
1. Edit /etc/smb.conf and change the following
MAKE SURE that the line "workgroup = MYGROUP' is CHANGED to be
"workgroup = (what ever you have in windows under workgroup in
settings-control panel-network-identification"
2. Change the line 'security = user' to security = share'
3. Uncomment (take out the semi-colon) the section that looks like
this:
;[public]
;path = /home/samba
;public = yes
;writable = yes
;printable = no
4. If you want your whole linux machine to show up in windows, change
the above "path = /home/samba" to 'path = /", otherwise, only the
/home/samba directory will be available to windows.
5. Shutdown and restart samba or reboot you linux machine and it will
be visible in windows network neighborhood.

[newbie] Kernel Optimizations

1999-06-25 Thread Anonymous

Linux Mandrake 6.0 is said to be optimized for Pentium-type processors.
This means that it was compiled using pgcc instead of gcc, correct? So if I
wanted to compile a custom kernel (i.e. include NTFS support) I'm guessing
that I should use pgcc instead of gcc, to keep the optimizations.
On a side note, could I do the opposite to install 6.0 on a 386/486? I
mean, install 6.0, including kernel sources, then boot off a floppy with a
non-optimized kernel, and recompile the kernel using gcc?

Also, was anything else done to Mandrake to optimize it for Pentium
processors?

What chances has he got in porting is work from the Dos

Hy, I have found it very easy to open and use Excel and Word files
from windows with StarOffice in Linux. Also, Wordperfect for Linux
handles Word files nicely. Haven't tried it with Excel, though.

Sure, try wget, which you should have installed already if you're using M6.
It's a console program, so type 'man wget' to see instructions on how to use
it.

Also, if you're using KDE, there's a nice download manager called Caitoo which
you can get at http://devel-home.kde.org/kget/

Don,
I tried that and ended back at the prompt without it installing. Any
other
ideas?

Re: [newbie] Need a strong convincing argument

1999-06-25 Thread Anonymous

I have got a friend whom is trying to move away from the Windows
environment, but is having a lot of concerns on whether he'll succeed
or not with Linux. He believes that because Linux is being developed
by hackers throughout the world and it does not have a certified
authentication, it will not last for longer.

I would not try to convert him. He won't be happy.

As much as I would like to see Linux grow, I have to agree with Irv on this
one. This is like trying to get a friend to dump his girlfriend and go on a
blind date. The "best" operating system is the one that does what you need.
I like Linux. I loved UNIX way before X-windows. I dismissed MS Windows for
years until 3.11 came out. But the flat out truth is that MS Windows is
pretty damned good. And taking both license costs and administration costs
into consideration it's got by far the lowest "total cost of ownership" for
an individual or a small to mid-sized office. While Linux is "free" there
is big learning curve for most offices. That costs time, which is money.
For an individual it's the same argument. If the guy really wants to be
fertilizing his tomato plants instead of trying to get a letter out, then
he really wants to be fertilizing his tomato plants. And pushing him into
the position of having to fidget with something he isn't really interested
in is a disservice to him.

Of course, if he shows up at the door and says, "I've just formatted my C:
drive. What do you suggest," then jump at the opportunity to push Linux.

Excellently put, and I too am a linux lover. The OS is and will always be a
means to an end. A tool, what.

Re: [newbie] Video problem

1999-06-25 Thread Anonymous

[this thread is almost a month old, but I noticed it and would be
interested to hear if someone has a method that works (personal
experience.]

I wished that worked, but it didn't when I just tried it. I went and
commented out every one of the "Virtual screen" lines in my XF85Config,
and there was no change, I still had "screen missing" when I dropped
from 1024x... to 800x It seems that virtual screen defaults to the
highest resolution, and the lower resolutions just have to live with
it. I've not seen a setup that allowed one to switch from a "full
screen" 1024x... to a "full screen" 800x... without dropping out of X
and changing the X's configuration..., then, again, I guess there are a
whole lot of things I haven't seen - and they actually _do_ which exist
g

Have you been able to get it to work for you? Would you post your
config file? Thanks.

Gerry

By default Xwindows takes your highest resolution you have set for the color
depth you are in and makes that your virtual screen resolution...if you wish
 to
set your virtual desktop size to something else add the line Virtual
1024 768or whatever resolution you want just below the ViewPort
 line...make
 sure your spacing lines up...

[newbie] Installation problems

1999-06-25 Thread Zigron

I recently got Linux-Mandrake from cheapbytes, and tried to install
it..actually,
tried about three times. :)
With the Linux for Windows attempt, when the OS tries to load, I get the
following
error at the end of allt he bootup text:

VFS: Cannot open root device 08:21
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:21

When I tried a regular old install on a partition I leached away from my
main
windows partition (created using the 'partitian manager' thingie that came
on the cd),
I encountered two problems:
1) It wouldn't install the boot-loader, neither in the Master Boot
Record nor on the
first-part-of-partition, or whatever it said. I'm not sure why. The error
message was
vague, just saying that the error occured.
I figured this just meant that it wouldn't automatically switch between
OS's, so I
loaded up fdisk in DOS and set the active-booting partition to the linux
one, and
rebooted.
I got a 'Missing operating system' error..and nothing happens,
no linux, no
nothing.

Computer specs:

Pentium-II 400mhz, 10gig hd, with a 800ish meg linux partition, and
120ish meg
swap partition made. 128megs ram, etc.

Thanks for any help you have to offer.
