[newbie] OS boot order
i recently installed mandrake 7.2 with the lnx4win feature, and i love it! the only problem (or invonvenience) that i have faced is the OS boot list that comes up allowing you to chose what OS to go into (linux, windows, and the other options). linus is on the top, though...and while i think linux is really great, i still currently use windows much more frequently. is there any way to put windows on the top of the list so that it is the default loader (if nothing else is selected in the 5 seconds or whatever)? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thank you very much! -erik
Re: Re[8]: [newbie] The NVIDIA Kernel Compile
Well, 2.4.1 running with the nvidia .96 drivers. All is well, AFAIK. Time will tell about the files structures. Still no automount. I guess I'll mess with the patch in the future (maybe later). RE: [newbie] LAN settings - (was: Setting up NIC under 7.2)
Given that you have 4 machines set up to get their IP allocations via DHCP, you must have initially contact the ISP and asked for 4 or 5 ip's. SOME ISP's allocate IP's based upon the machines NAME... Let's say you have a LAN with 9 computers, but the ISP is only giving you 5 IP's... In this case they would tell you to set the NAME of your computer to something they know (or is in their database...) I.E. ic-connect-@home-20322 ic-connect-@home-2033, etc. In a situation such as this, you must set your Linux box up to utilize the same hostname and domain as your ISP is expecting. In this manner your DHCP client will be understood, and it will get an IP address... You might want to refer to the @home DSL/CABLE howtos which discuss this in detail. -JMS > -Original Message- > From: Rick Commo [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Sunday, February 04, 2001 12:28 PM > To: Newbie > Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: RE: [newbie] LAN settings - (was: Setting up NIC under 7.2) > > Jose, > > Thanks. Re: [newbie] RPMs
To install and RPM, the easiest way is to open a terminal window and, at the command prompt, type "su" followed by your root password. You need to be the root user in order to install software on your system. Then, in the directory containing the downloaded RPM, type: rpm -ivh [RPM_filename] This tells the program RPM to install and verify the file, and to display hash marks as a sort of progress indicator. (Actually -i on its own would be sufficient.) If you're in doubt about what you're doing, you might want to try: rpm -ivh [RPM_filename} --test This will do a "dry run" and tell you whether you're likely to run into any problems. Remember after you've installed your RPM to type "exit" so that you return to the normal user. You don't want to stay logged in as root any longer than necessary. There's a lot more you can do with RPM. See "man rpm" for details. Cheers. M. Anthony, I'm a little comfused on this one. Aren't you supposed to change the "vga" entry to 788 or something like that to configure it before boot up? The web page refers to the frame buffer but I'm looking at some sort of start up script in the boot menu. -- Roman Registered Linux User #179293 High Energy Penguin Powered Email

Re: [newbie] USR 5610 Modem on 7.2
I had a 5610 working under SuSE 6.4. the biggest problem is knowing what I did as I moved it to an NT server and replaced it with an eternal. Basically you can do it using setserial with autoconfig at the end. That is about all I remember other than the fact it worked and did not need 2.4. You might want to have a look through SuSE archive for 5610, I think I posted there once with how I got it to work. [newbie] Problems with 7.2 and external modem
After putting 7.2 on a machine i got from work (pentium 120, 32meg ram) i decided to put it on my network and replace an older machine that i was using as file/print server and firewall ip masqer. I attached the external 3com/USR 56k Voice Faxmodem Pro Model #525 that i had been using under 7.1 with no problems to ttyS0 on the 7.2 box and when first booting the 7.2 it came up and detected my modem as an external 56K USR just like it did in 7.1 during the "checking for new hardware" phase. I then went to harddrake and let it do its thing. It didn't detect the modem at all but did find everything else. I then used kppp and it was able to find the modem and connect to the Internet just fine. Why isn't harddrake able to find it? In 7.1 harddrake detected this same modem perfectly with no problem at all. What do I need to do to fix this? I cant use kppp to make the connection since i need to be able to start it via telnet from another machine and /sbin/ifup wont work until the modem gets configured. At least i cant get it to work and under 7.1 it didnt work until harddrake had detected the modem. Thanks in advance, Ian K. Harrell [EMAIL PROTECTED]

No, I have the exact same modem and mine worked on 2.2.17. Look in KDE System control and see what irq and ioport its on and then setserial it. Then set kppp to the same com port. That's all it is to it. 2.4.0 just does it all automagically. -s -- Forwarded Message -- Subject: [newbie] USR 5610 Modem on 7.2 Date: Sun, 4 Feb 2001 08:02:38 -0600 From: "Keith" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Everyone, I cannot get my Modem (US Robotics 5610) to work under Mandrake 7.2 The box said it was Linux compatible, but the inside paper said it needed kernal 2.4 for support. [newbie] Requesting info about ntp-4.0 audio clock drivers - jrt
Hi: I am attempting to set up a stratum 1 ntp server using the CHU Canada time signal as a reference clock. Is anybody successfully using or tested the ntp audio reference clock drivers either on a i386 or the sparc? Background: The newest version of NTP has some neat drivers that should make this dead simple. The 'Radio CHU Audio Demodulator/Decoder' is designed to allow you to simply connect the headphone output from a short wave radio to the line in on a sound card and the driver will generate a pulse-per-second signal, to condition the system clock, and extracts the time code from the signal to set the clock. Depending on your location (and I am 11 KM - 37 uS - from the transmitter in Ottawa ON.), the driver will set, and maintain, the system clock to 10s of microseconds of the 'kerect time'! The problem is that the drivers were developed on a sparc running solaris and are optimized for the sun sound system. Some of the traffic on the NG comp.protocols.time.ntp hints that people are having success on other machines (probably sparcs, but possibly i386). Mandrake 7.2 i386 and 7.1 Sparc do contain the new ntpd. Anybody playing? I would really like to hear success stores, but also any notes from people who have tried and failed. What did you try and how did it fail. At this point, I should offer to do the port, but since I don't program for beans, the result would be a long time coming, and no good when it arrived. But if we can compile some war stories, perhaps some talented sole will get some bright idea of what is broken and just fix it. Thank you all in advance. John T

I got that part to work, but the cd rom read only drive is not recognised by xcdroast, linux will recognise it, but not the app because the app wants a scsi drive, how would I go about making the first drive as a reader get recognised by xcdroast so I can direct copy a cd in the reader to the already working burner, the reader is not recognised by the app, just linux. RE: [newbie] LAN settings - (was: Setting up NIC under 7.2)
Jose, Thanks. Yes, I had rebooted. I still have to do some more playing around. My knowledge in this whole area is just generally rather weak. I would have presumed that the LinkSys actually provided the DNS server names once it got them from Verizon, my ISP. Currently I have all my machines (a whopping 4, including my laptop) set for DHCP so creating a hosts file is somewhat problematic unless there are some hosts semantics that I am not aware of. If it becomes too painful I will supply static IPs to all but the laptop. The laptop has to span 3 different environments and DHCP is required in 2 out the 3. [newbie] Sound Blaster 16 PCI Configuration
I installed Linux-Mandrake 7.2 on my HP Pavilion 4540 about two weeks ago. I haven't succeeded yet in getting it to use my Sound Blaster 16 PCI sound card. I am currently trying to use pnpdump to get the vendor ID and serial number from the card. Using that information, I hope to manually configure the card using isapnp. However, it appears that pnpdump will not access the I/O address used by the card. Would someone please tell me what I should do? Re: [newbie] Mandrake 7.3/8.0 - getting ready
Thanks for the help so far, Chris. Does an install really need formatting to be clean? I remember when I switched to MDK7.2 from 7.1 I simply deleted everything on my Linux partition save /home and then ran Drakx. So if partitioning is really better, can someone please suggest what I should do with my system? I have two drives, one 11.2GB and one 2.4GB. The 11.2GB is much faster than the 2.4GB and is set on the primary (master) IDE channel, whereas the 2.4GB is a secondary master. I need about 3GB for Windows (I only use it nowadays to play the occasional game :-)), but Linux is my priority. Swap is not much of a priority, as I have 256MB of RAM and I only use swap when either something's crashed or if I'm using VMware. I currently have 200MB of Swap and it appears to suit my needs well (I regularly check my usage with "free -m"). I have a CD-burner on the secondary IDE channel, so I don't want to burden this channel with much hard drive traffic (so I can prevent coasters). A major reason for the repartitioning is to switch to ReiserFS from Ext2 and thus speed up my drive performance so I can burn without errors. Thanks in advance. Re: [newbie] Mandrake 7.3/8.0 - getting ready
I can answer that in one word - "Updates". It is far easier and safer to do a clean install than to do an update. Part of the clean full install includes formatting. For myself that would be deadly as my /home partition has a lot of source code, documents, etc. So that is partitioned. Also, wou will see a performance hit the larger the drive gets. IMHO. Re: [newbie] Mandrake 7.3/8.0 - getting ready
Can someone please tell me the point of having several partitions on the same drive for one GNU/Linux installation? I can't imagine that it would be much faster, and there is not really much risk of losing data with only one partition, especially with new filesystems like ReiserFS. I simply use one partition for everything, and I have had no problems whatsoever. If I had several partitions I would be wasting space since /boot, / and other partitions would not be full, and so would be robbing space from /home. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, since I'm interested in repartitioning my drive to give more room to Linux (about 9GB in total, excluding Swap). [newbie] USR 5610 Modem on 7.2
Hi Everyone, I cannot get my Modem (US Robotics 5610) to work under Mandrake 7.2 The box said it was Linux compatible, but the inside paper said it needed kernal 2.4 for support. Everything else on the install works great! 1. When will Mandrake have a new release with 2.4 kernal on it? 2. Or, how can i get 7.2 to work with my modem? Thanks, Keith
