[newbie] dns and mdk8.0

2001-07-14 Thread eryl

I've been off the list for a couple of months, but I've got a name
resolve problem that's driving me nuts, so here I am again.

My mdk 8.0 box fails to resolve hostnames after connecting to my isp.
I've even re-installed thinking that something was screwed with the
original installation--to no avail. My local lan works fine, though.
What's weird is that my configuration files are exact copies of the
files that work on my mdk7.1 and 7.2 machines.

here's my resolv.conf:

search myispname.net
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xx #my isp's first dns server
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xx #my isp's secondary dns server

This is what it is NOW, after trying a dozen other things. My original
resolv.conf (which still works on my older mdk boxes) is:

search mylocaldomain
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xx #my isp's first dns server
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xx #my isp's secondary dns server

bind and dns cacheing is installed--which wasn't done by default.

The search order is: hosts, bind
  multi on

In the kppp dial-up the box to disable other dns servers when connecting
is checked, and my isp's DNS addresses are correct.

I'm really at my wit's end, and am convinced that mdk8.0 has done
something differently than the earlier distro's, so that I need to
change or create a configuration that I haven't before. Any help would
be appreciated.

And, btw, nslookup doesn't give me anything--just a after a little
message that says it's obsolete. And, after connecting, I can't ping my
isp--destination host unreachable. And, I repeat, my config files are
EXACT copies of those on my other boxes--only the localhost name/address
is changed to protect the innocent. Kppp is set up exactly the same way
on all the boxes.

[newbie] IBM Websphere HomePage Builder for Linux -- Opinions?

2001-07-14 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I've recently downloaded the IBM Websphere HomePage Builder v. 4 for Linux
(60-day trial version). I would very much appreciate your opinions on this
program.

First, you can get the program from:

http://www-4.ibm.com/software/webservers/hpbuilder/linux/download.html

Here are the files:

[sher@localhost IBM-HomePage]$ ls -la
total 43052
drwxrwxrwx2 root root 4096 Jul 12 04:23 ./
drwxrwxrwx 20 root root 4096 Jul 12 02:39 ../
-rwxrwxrwx1 root root 8065661 Jul 9 08:31 hpb4pug.pdf*
-rwxrwxrwx1 root root 19874235 Jul 9 07:39
hpbuilder-4.0-1.i386.rpm*
-rwxrwxrwx1 root root 14483967 Jul 9 08:26
hpbuilder-tutorial-4.0-1.i386.rpm*
-rwxrwxrwx1 root root 1638464 Jan 20 17:17
hpbuilder-wine-4.0-1.i386.rpm*
[sher@localhost IBM-HomePage]$

The Websphere HomeBuilder runs a special IBM version of wine. Installation is
absolutely automatic. You just rpm -Uvh the wine file, then the Websphere
rpms and that's it. You then type hpbuilder as user with the appropriate
argument, e.g.

$hpbuilder -e

brings up the Webpage editor.

$hpbuilder -c

starts the WebArt Designer interface.

That's it. You don't have to mess with the wine file AT ALL except to install
it. Once installed, the Websphere HomePage Builder automatically uses it to
launch its various programs without any action on your part. Wine remains
totally invisible after installation.

[sher@localhost IBM-HomePage]$ hpbuilder

Usage: hpbuilder [options]
-a start the 'Web Animator' program
-c start the 'WebArt Designer' program
-e start the 'Web page editor' program
-f start the 'File Transfer' program
 -g start online user's guide
-t start the 'Multimedia Tutorial' program
 -u clean up temporary file
 -h produce this help message
 -v report hpbuilder version
[sher@localhost IBM-HomePage]$

The program costs $69, so, if it's the right thing, it would certainly seem
to me to be a reasonable price to pay and a great way to support those who
support Linux, in this case, IBM.

Now, this program is also available for Windows.

MY QUESTION OF THE DAY:

In looking over the program, which has extraordinarily extensive
documentation (the User's Guide is over 250 pages long and in PDF format, to
boot! -- you got to give IBM credit here), I was very impressed (as a newbie,
of course) by all parts of the program. HOWEVER, the Linux version uses
Netscape 4.x as its browser of choice.

My question is: If you design pages using Websphere and Netscape 4.x in
Linux, how will these pages look in Windows (and on the Mac)? Websphere does
support the latest technologies and standards and protocols.

However, and here are my two questions, will using the Linux version of
Websphere with Netscape 4.x as the test browser guarantee

a) that pages and sites generated with Websphere will look just like the
pages generated with the Websphere for Windows version?

and

b) that pages and sites generated with Websphere, either for Linux or
Windows, be compatible with both IE and Netscape and Mozilla in general,
whatever the platform?

I could ask IBM these questions and I will. However, I wanted to get the
opinions of USERS. It's not just a question of $69. It's a question of an
ounce of prevention... I would like to know in advance whether Websphere for
Linux (and secondarily, Websphere for Windows) is the right tool for the job.
I'd hate to create web sites and pages and then find out I have been using
the wrong program.

One thing I am sure about. I would like to avoid at all costs using any
Microsoft web program like FrontPage. I have already seen what Word97 can do
to a web site, and I want to stay away as far as possible from Microsoft's
standards and tools. I would prefer to use a neutral tool that can handle
all platforms. I think the IBM Websphere program may be just what I need. But
I need confirmation from experts and users who have actually used it
extensively.

Thank you very much for listening and I hope to hear from you all.

Benjamin

[newbie] Internet Configuration bug

2001-07-14 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear Civilme:

Just wanted to report a minor but critical bug in the Internet Connection
Configuration. It happens both during Install and when trying to configure
Internet Connection from scratch in the Mandrake Control Center. This little
bug caused me no end of confusion and agony when I first tried to configure
my Internet Connection in LM 8.0.

Here it is:

I have two NIC cards on my system: eth0 (3c905b) and eth1 (Syslink tulip).
I connect to the Internet through eth0 and my LAN then connects my computer 1
to computer 2 by means of eth1.

The bug occurs if you choose to let LM 8.0 detect your NIC cards
AUTOMATICALLY. In my case, it selects LAN for my configuration. That's
wrong. I do not connect to the Internet on computer 1 through LAN but through
DSL. When I accepted this official detection by LM 8.0 and tried (several
times) to configure my LAN, I then found it impossible to install Internet
Sharing. I was very confused and almost gave up on Internet Sharing. But then
I decided to go against this official detection and chose DSL, which
brought up BOTH eth0 and eth1, configured eth0 for my Internet Connection and
completed my Install. Then, when I booted up, both eth0 and eth1 were
recognized, logged into KDE and clicked on Internet (Network Monitoring),
which connected me to the Internet using my ADSL eth0.

Once I was online, I went into Mandrake Control Center, skipped Internet
Connection altogether, went directly into Internet Sharing and used the
Wizard to configure my LAN. The Wizard reported that it would set up my LAN
using my eth1 (tulip). Right on the money. It then automatically downloaded
and installed all the necessary files and, bingo, in seconds, my second
computer was connected to the Internet using ADSL.

The point is that the automatic detection thoroughly confused me. I just
assumed that LM 8.0's Wizard knows better than me what ought to be configured
at this staqe. And LM 8.0's Wizard in this case was DEAD WRONG.

I wanted to let you know so that this bug can be fixed or else some text be
added to the configuration of Internet Connection AT THIS CRITICAL JUNCTURE
of the Install.

That's it.

All my thanks for a great job and a great distro.

Yes, this rings a bell. Same message - terminal not fully functional.
Could not figure out what caused the xterm to get in that state but
it did appear to be connected to one user so the immediate cause of the

a hidden file in my home directory which I knew nothing about, called
something like .ttyrc. Too long ago to remember exactly what it was
called or what it contained. Anyway, deleted that and the problem
vanished for subsequent xterms. Try looking for something like that.
Try ls -a for both root and user and look for hidden files which do not
appear in both. One of these will be the culprit. Then you have to
figure out what created it in the first place.

Good luck

[newbie] XF86Config Issue.

2001-07-14 Thread Brian Durant

Hi again,

I have a question about entering monitor resolutions in advanced mode in
another Linux flavor and PPC hardware, but as far as I understand, the
principle should be one of the few universal elements in all Linux distros.
I am trying to install Yellow Dog Linux on a UMAX Pulsar (Mac clone) but
keep getting hung up on monitor resolution. There is not test mode as in
Mandrake. An advanced mode example would be a monitor that can do 1280x1024
resolution at 85Hz, where the option for horizontal monitor sync would be
31.5 - 95.0. There must be someone out there with experience in this area.
For anyone wishing to make snide wrong list remarks, I have tried the
right list and no help was available. I also at the same time made a point
out complaining that there was no test possibility during the install
procedure like in my favorite distro - Mandrake.

I am using a Matrox card and monitor resolution is usually set at 832x624
resolution at 75Hz, but settings show that I also could set it at 832x624
resolution at 85Hz, 800x600 resolution at 85Hz, 1024x768 resolution at 60,
67, 74.9 or 85Hz or at 640x480 resolution at 60 or 85Hz.

What would the option for horizontal monitor sync be? How do I determine the
vertical monitor sync? The monitor is an Apple Multiple Scan 15AV Display.
According to the manual it is multiple scan, resolution range 640 x 480 to
1024 x 768 and with a 0.28 mm dot pitch.

From where to get DiskWriter plugin? What is the file name.

xmms-diskwriter-1.2.4-13.1mdk an older one is probly on your CD's.
IIRC, Xmms rpms were updates with MandrakeUpdate (Software Manager).

I was running xawtv and from terminal I issued command
 dd /dev/audio xx1.au

Now to convert to .wav file I issued sox xx1.au xx1.wav.

Now I get the wav file. But if I use normalize xx1.wav I get error as
 [lvgandhi@localhost lvgandhi]$ normalize -m *.wav
 Computing levels...
normalize: this is a non-PCM WAV file

I don't know anything about xawtv, nor have I used sox to convert
.au to wav. You wouldn't use normalize -m on just one file tho. The -m
(mix) switch is for equalizing the volume levels of multiple wav files.

After I rebooted and returned to GNOME, I found that my sound no

perfectly in KDE, which uses the ARTS sound server. I can also run
console apps like mpg123 with no trouble.

What could be wrong? Perhaps I accidentally blocked a port that
 Esound needs?

I don't really think this is the fix, but it couldn't hurt.

How to get to show cpu temp. I didn't find any options?

When I run 'sensors' my cpu temp is shown as temp2. This is pretty
standard I think, with 4 different mobo's cpu has always been temp2.
Then in Gkrellm, Configuration, Sensorsnext to temp2 I type in CPU.
Click OK, and Gkrellm should start displaying something like CPU 44C
or you can choose to have it shown in Farenheit.

Prices sure have come down. I bought the identical drive from a place online
last October for $165 :(. But the Deskstar is quite a good drive.

Are you running it on your ata-100 controller? If so, any problems or

ata-66) and I have another legacy 1.6 gig maxtor on it as well.

   I knew ez-bios wouldn't be needed, or wanted, but I wasn't sure I

put a 30 gig drive on their XT ? :) :)

And I don't even have a copy of DOS fdisk around (snifff) :)

Still, I was able to tar up the various directories and move them over to the
new drive after partitioning formatting. I figured mke2fs would take a very
*long* time to format 5 gig partitions, but it didn't seem to take that long.
