to protect yourself and your equipment from power outages and surges.

as an addition, i would like to say that bad weather is not all that can
knock your systems down.

a surge, increase or decrease in voltage can be cause by various other

in most ups and line conditioners, spikes and over voltages are suppressed

is i don't see any status bar so i don't know how much more do i have

I use text installation coz when i use the standard install, it gives

 John Richard Smith wrote:

Does sound as though you are having fun and games Sean.

Seems as though there are some basic terms your not familiar with.
Mount points are essential to any linux system, in the above example
the installer is asking you to choose which partitions to create and
install the Linux OS on , and to mount them. The absolute minimum is
a base root partition recognised by the symbol, / , and a swap
partition , recognised by the symbol, /swap, and the swap partition
is your linux equivelant of Virtual memory that in windblows exists
as a file (which can expand within predefined limits) whereas in
linux it's a defined as a partition. Obviously you don't yet
understand the need to create these partitions and define them as per
the installer is requesting you do.

It is hard to advise someone when they don't give you their hardrive
details, such as harddrive size, number and size of existing
partitions etc etc , but since you got as far as the disc drake
partition tool you are well on the way to a Linux OS.

Diskdrake gives you an easy visual display of your harddrive(s) . Use
it's graphical tools to make and define the partitions you want.

 Hope the above helps.

 John

Well there is something wrong. Formatting in DrakX is a zippy thing, it
takes a few seconds or so.
The essential thing here is to make absolutely sure that it is
formatting the correct partitions, so when you were in the diskdrake ,
you wrote down the harddrive partition number, such as your example
hda1, that is the first partition on any linux harddrive numbering
system, it may or may not be where you chose to intall your linux OS .
The main thing is to make sure that both your linux base / partition and
your linux /swap partition are formatted, then go on and proceed with
the rest.

I use text installation coz when i use the standard install, it gives
me 2 white vertical lines across the screen just after it probes my ports

I see , I've never had this problem myself, do you happen to have a usb
mouse by any chance ?
So you have been partitioning with a text install , presumeably you do
have the screen , but you have to Alt-letter ( the little _ under the
first character of what ever choice you wish to make) in order to make a
choice.A nuisance but still useable. I still don't know why you get
those two white verticle lines. This is real early on in the install
during hardware detection, and it does this because it doesn't like
something to do with either your serial, parallel or usb ports .You are
on M8.2 , and we know it doesn't like a usb mouse. If you do have a usb
mouse , propably the easiest way . at least , what I would do, is
replace the usb mouse with a parallel port or serial mouse for the
install and afterwards on desktop I would hot plug the usb mouse.

Sean,
I have kept this on list, because I do not have a monopoly of wisdom.

2002-08-01 Thread Anne Wilson

Since the recent changes I have lost the functionality I had.

The first sign was last evening when I discovered that Micky could no longer
log on at all (nothing shows up in her Network Neighbourhood and she can't be
pinged by anyone) and Andy was apparently logging in as Guest. I do not know
whether he was logging as Guest before, as I had not found out how to check.

I ran the tests specified last evening using the connection to Andy, being
unable to find Micky, and expecting to find the problem this morning, which I
have failed to do.

Syslog gave the following errors

Yeah, shell is a bad name for the console or terminal. Pico not found?
Hmm. That means it's probably not installed.

If you are using KDE, try editor or advanced editor - they are very
simple like pico, except they run in the KDE gui. Sorry I can't remember
what menu they are under, but you can get to them from the menu system.
That is if they are installed

If you are using Gnome, try Gedit. Again, I can't recall exactly what
menu it lives in.

Opening the file should be quite easy in either; they are gui driven.

If they aren't installed, try emacs- the version I run on RedHat 7.1
allows you to use the mouse with the console so it shouldn't be too bad.

Type emacs in the console.

Thanks Bill

I had tried to use the Control Center (sic). but found it wouldn't work

I had to edit the adsl file in peers.
I managed by the advice of using kedit.
Thanks again.

You could, as user root, issue vim /etc/ppp/peers/adsl in a console. But
you could use Mandrake Control Center to set up your internet

i run my boxes 24/7/365. only time that i shut down is when i go out of
town for more than 3 days, tho i did leave them up while i was out for a
week. when i returned, all was well, we did have a small el storm, but
logs showed no shutdown.

as a suggestion, put sasd suppressor at mains electrical panel. this will
protect _all_ electrical afer panel.

you could put all of you cpu boxes on 1 ups, but i would suggest using at
least 2. put main file server and main workstation boxes on 1 ups, secondary
boxes on 2nd.

this is how i am set up, main ups is an apc smart-ups 600, loaded with main
file server, workstation, firewall, lan concentrator, kvm switch.

secondary is an apc network power cell 600, loaded with second file server,
scsi server, 1 printer.

to determine power requirements, check labels on back of equipment for voltage
and amps ratings. multiply volts x amps = va load to determine require ups.

you can still use your seperate ac line feeds, but will only need 2 if you
run 2 boxes per ups.

as a bit of additional info, this came yesterday from apc...

Try setting up X with known values that should work ;) and do not test it
during the install.

That has happened to me before with various computers - when attempting to
test the graphics, the screen goes blank and never recovers. If one of the
values does not work after completing the install, go in and manually edit
XF86Config-4.

Hint, till you are sure you have a working XF86Config-4 file, do not check
the box that asks Would you like to start X automatically? during install.
You can change that later when all is well.

Sorry sent accidentally...

To finish--to open a port for unsolicited contacts is much more complex
and requires port-forwarding rules. This is not something covered by
any GUI tools except on separate firewall products for any distro,
because it is a bit complicated. If that is what yu want to do, then it
is a great idea to have the gateway computer dedicated to
gateway/firewall functions and toss the router. That means running a
dedicated firewall product like SNF from Mandrakesoft or its forthcoming
replacement MNF, where port forwarding is one of the many options
available (To allow a web server behind the firewall to be contacted
from the internet for example.)

There are other tools, but for those you really need to read and
understand something like the iptables manual, or at least look at the
examples given for port-forwarding. Writing firewall rules is not a
heck of a lot of fun.

Re: [newbie] Manually editing a file

2002-08-01 Thread Derek Jennings

Nick

The file you want to edit is a 'system file'

That means you will not be able to edit it unless you are root user (otherwise
known as 'SuperUser'. (This is a security thing which is one reason Linux is
so much more secure than Windows))

The easiest way to do this is in yourKDE desktop go to KMenu (The K in the
bottom left corner)
then ApplicationsFile ToolsFile Manager (SuperUser Mode)

after giving the root password you will get a konqueror file manager. Browse
to /etc/ppp/peers right click on the adsl file and select 'Open Withkedit'

You will then get a nice GUI editor just like notepad in Windows.

No need for a command console at all :-)

 At last someone with sense.
I have found the shell (that's the console thing, right?)
But when I type in pico and all that stuff it says command not found.
I tried nano but it's too complicated, I don't know what it all means.

OK guys and gals get this straight, no flaming please because I am a

 user

  not a computer fan.
I am a complete newbie and to connect to the dreaded British Telecom
Openworld I have been told I need to edit /etc/ppp/peers/adsl
  Right.
  I've found it.
  How do I edit it?

There are loads of Linux editors; Gurus will be using VI or EMACS,
newbies like you and me will be using Pico. From the shell:

 pico /etc/ppp/peers/adsl

make your changes then hit ctrl-x , answer y , hit return.

 Hope that helps

[newbie] Mandrake 9.0: Xinerama + XFDrake

2002-08-01 Thread Joe Dennehy

I had no luck using xinerama under 8.2 and was wondering if there were
significant improvements to XFDrake in 9.0 ? I am installing it regardless,
just to check it out; but is it was worth my time to try Xinerama again? I
never had any luck writing my own Config-4 file by following the how-to.

I had a script during the code red days that ran on my apache server. If a
remote server tried to run cmd.exe or whatever it was on my webserver, it
would fire up lynx and connect back to the infected remote server. It would
then make use of the vulnerability to run arbitrary code - which just
happened to be the M$ patch. Cleaned up my entire subnet in a couple of hours.

A friend of mine, who was afraid of the ramifications of altering and
rebooting a remote server (apparently this is still illegal even though
you're fixing the server) changed the script to do a net send to the
server's subnet. Those guys must have had lots of messages ;-)

Well, xinerama works or does not work as a function of your video card
and the support from XFree.org. Many cards have multi-screen capability
but you will never see it in linux because not enough tech info is
released to write a driver. A few manufacturers have come to the
conclusion that the Nicrosoft cow won't always give the milk and have
been adding to the efforts of XFree.

XFdrake is simply a tool to configure the XF86Config file without
actually editing it. As such, it has limitations, because not every
scenario can be anticipated and if most were, the tool would be very
unwieldy.

So the answer lies in maybe and has more to do with your video card
driver than any particular distro.

The server's domain, not subnet, I meant... meaning the Windows domain of
course, not the *real* domain in the sense that those of us who make us of
the Internet think.. :-)

if worst comes to worst, you will be able to get it working using
framebuffer instead of the ATI driver.

You can change that later when all is well.

mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/disk

Replace /mnt/disk with your mountpoint.
