Hey, what do u mean by telling the installer to startx when i reboot... I didnt see that option. I used advanced setup tooo... Also do you know good download mirror where i could download CD-1, and CD-2 (os, and extras cd) for linux mandrake. I went to: www.linuxiso.org and i downloaded from there, but it seems to be a bad download. Mandrakes site only give 1 file... i dont see all 3.

[newbie] kmail with nested folders -> Evolution?

2002-08-22 Thread Alastair Scott

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

I'm considering moving, and there appears to be a problemette with Evolution's
import.

Although it can import a 'single file' mbox, it cannot import a folder
hierarchy containing multiple mbox files, as my installation of kmail has.
(Entering /home/thebrix/Mail into the Evolution import box, although not
explicitly prevented or warned against, results in nothing happening when the
import is triggered).

Or am I missing some devious trick whereby nested folders can be imported? I
can't find anything on google so far, and the thought of importing 100+ mbox
files one by one is apalling.

Clever programs can also read from normal CD-ROM drives without SCSI

The PM documentation is outdated by a couple of years. LILO and GRUB can boot
Linux from just about anywhere on the disc. You can safely install Mandrake 8.2
[or better yet, wait for 9.0, which should be out in under a month :) ] to
wherever you want.

AFAIK, Windows still has this 1024 cylinder limit.

Certification is more or less based on compliance with where things
are put, ie, in what dir. So if Prosuite 8.2 is compliant, the d/l
edition is also. 'Course that's a vast oversimplification, the whole
standard can be found here

9.0 can't be certified till it's released, but it will be, all
versions.

Sorry to hear you had problems. Here are some thoughts.

1/ Plz try to avoid using html mails when posting to a list. It is generally
regarded as 'evil'. Your font comes out really tiny on my screen, and some
people cannot receive html at all. (Your Outlook express has a setting to
disable Html)

2/Your errors when installing packages is almost certainly the reason you
cannot enter the graphical environment. If you downloaded your CDs try doing
it again, and check the MD5 checksum of the download before committing to CD.

3/ You can use AOL with Linux. Check out
http://www.mandrakeforum.org/article.php?sid=2314&lang=en
I do believe Wine will workOk, but only with a very old version of AOL.
Win4Lin is probably OK.

4/ Do not worry about your Nvidia drivers yet. You will need them for OpenGL
games, but for normal use the default OpenSource drivers work just fine. Wait
until you know what you are doing before installing the nvidia driver.

5/ Do not even think about 9.0 just yet. As with all Beta releases it still
has plenty of faults in it. Mandrake 8.2 is a very advanced distro, and is
very stable.

[newbie] An apology to daRcmaTTeR and the list

I'd like to offer an apology for my tone to daRcmaTTeR and the list. I
posted a message "Problem with updates at end of installation", and got a
bit, well, pissy at daRcmaTTeR's response to me.
On another users tip, I looked back at daRcmaTTeR's posts and see he is not a
typical newbie kicker, but very helpful indeed. Though I scan through the
collected posts every couple of days, I don't usually take the time to note
the sender and had not noticed his history.
In hindsight it might not have been clear I ws not asking for updates, only
commenting on a part of the installer and asking whether I would be missing
anything significant if I blew it off. It may indeed have appeared I was
asking why there were no updates for a beta release.

That is an out-of-date warning from PM.

As long as your BIOS supports that size drive and you were not forced to
use EZ-Bios or one of its clones, you will have no problem using lilo in
8.2 to boot. Lilo used to have a 1024 limit but no longer and I do not
think that grub has ever had it.

harder to follow what's happening if some posts are above and some below on a

[newbie] 1024 cylinder limit

2002-08-22 Thread Peter Watson

Many thanks to everyone who replied to my question about swap file sizes.

Now I have another concern.

I have an 80GB hard drive with one partition containing windows XP and
formatted NTFS.

I plan to use Partitionmagic 7.0 to shrink this partition to 40GB thus
leaving me 40GB to install LM 8.2. However the PM manual containds dire
warnings about a linux bootable partition needing to be below the 1024
cylinder (8GB) boundary.

Is this still a problem with LM 8.2 and if so what would be the best way
round it.

Note my previous nmachine only had a 8GB disk and so I had no problems with
Win 98 and LM 8.0.

Thanks in advance

Re: [newbie] What version (distro?) to run on my new box?

2002-08-22 Thread Derek Jennings

My vote would be to use Mandrake 8.2 download edition.

Thanks to a screwup in the building of the Powerpacks, there are actually
fewer applications on it, than on the download edition. (Apart from the
commercial applications which apart from SO6 are not usually of much
interest)

A download edition plus a Club membership will give you more than a Powerpack,
and access to lots of recent additions.

As for 9.0. Well it is not proven yet. There are some big changes in 9.0 and
we do not yet know if it is as robust as 8.2.

As for other distros, there are lots of good ones. Some may like your hardware
better than others.

Ooops, always a good idea (at least in Linux) to make a note of what errors
say, it helps a lot in troubleshooting. we all know how "arcane" the error
message given by M$winblows products, but in Linux, the messsages really mean
something. next time BTW, have you considered re-installing and this time
trying the "expert" (as opposed to "recomended", it is kinda like the
difference between a "normal" and a "custom" software install)

I ain't the guy to help you with AOL, but a search of this mail list archive
from the last few weeks should help, there was some links on how to get some
AOL stuff running, but AOL is A WInders Program. I bet you you could get

Re: [newbie] What version (distro?) to run on my new box?

2002-08-22 Thread Steve Maytum

Unless i'm mistaken , all distros revolce around the kernel capabilities.
Therefore whichever distro you use is O.K. Personally i use Mandrake (the
first distro i installed sucessfully!) However Slackware and Debian are two
alternatives that are supposedly better for somethings as long as you are
prepared to learn. The final choice is yours , but if you're already using
Mandrake - continue and use more command line where possible might be as
wise as anything. Any comments anyone? Regards [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [newbie]Single Network Firewall, Xwindow Configuration Problem

2002-08-22 Thread Dan LaBine

Dear Femme; All is well! Do not dispair! You must have missed the part -
during the last page or two of the install regarding how to administer your
firewall.
Enhance your calm! Open a browser on a different machine, and point it to
the IP address which you gave to SNF for your internal network card . For
example;
If your two network cards are configured properly by SNF, you will have two
distinct addresses - 1 per card. They should be configured as eth0, and
eth1.
Since eth0 is usually configured as your public interface, your firewall
will not allow you to connect to it by default, although you can modify this
once you're in the GUI. That leaves eth1. If the IP Address of eth1 is
192.168.1.0, then you will point your browser to https://192.168.1.0:8443 .
Notice the colon right between the IP address and the port number.

8443 is the default port for SNF, and usually works quite nicely. It is
important to note that you must modify the IP address that you enter into
your browser to match the IP address that you assigned to eth1 when you were
installing. As a default, SNF also allows you to login directly on the
machine with an ANSI GUI
(Yuch! Ptewey!) to modify your settings, but it's quite a tedious way to get
the job done.

One more thing,...I would like to suggest that you re-install. But this
time, when the install gives you a choice to install (Press Enter) or F1
(for other install options), select F1. At the prompt which follows, type
the word "expert" and then press enter. You will get the same install GUI
you're used to, but your options will be dramatically different! You will
have the option to choose many of the packages which you do or don't want,
which is something you don't get normally.
If you do a conventional install (probably what you did) , the result will
be a bunch of services running on SNF which you probably don't want like
SMTP, and Telnet!

Remember, use a different PC which is already a part of your network to
connect to SNF. Be advised that it's not a very secure idea to run X on SNF,
and that's why it's not installed by default. As a matter of fact, I'm not
even sure that they include any desktop managers in it. Your GUI will be
browser-based from other PC's, and will provide you a customized version of
Webmin with Wizards to perform most functions, and an SSH terminal as well.
Just make sure that you've got Java enabled on your browser.

Hope this helps! If not, I suggest Valium! Grin! Grin!

IMHO you have a fundamental problem. Nothing worth while is achieved without
a little effort. MS make an OS that - usually - can be running without too
much effort, but the corollary is that from that you learn nothing, and when
something goes wrong there's nothing you can do about it.

If cost is your only reason for linux you will soon get fed up of the
learning. If you want more control and to truly learn, then Mandrake is a
good distro, and, every bit as important, has a community that will help you
learn.

Just my opinion, of course.

Thanks, Femme. I looked over the docs you pointed me at before, but as I
told Brendan, I don't have any sd* entries, so I can't relate what I'm being
told to what I have. It may be, of course, that linux is picking up the
description direct from the hardware but is unable to do anything with it.

Oh dear me, what a nightmare.
No wonder, it's a mess,
just a sample of this carnage:-

Once upon a time, computer professionals noticed that 2^10 was very
nearly equal to 1000 and started using the SI prefix "kilo" to mean
1024. That worked well enough for a decade or two because everybody who
talked kilobytes knew that the term implied 1024 bytes. But, almost
overnight a much more numerous "everybody" bought computers, and the
trade computer professionals needed to talk to physicists and engineers
and even to ordinary people, most of whom know that a kilometer is 1000
meters and a kilogram is 1000 grams.

Then data storage for gigabytes, and even terabytes, became practical,
and the storage devices were not constructed on binary trees, which
meant that, for many practical purposes, binary arithmetic was less
convenient than decimal arithmetic. The result is that today "everybody"
does not "know" what a megabyte is. When discussing computer memory,
most manufacturers use megabyte to mean 2^20 = 1 048 576 bytes, but the
manufacturers of computer storage devices usually use the term to mean
1 000 000 bytes. Some designers of local area networks have used megabit
per second to mean 1 048 576 bit/s, but all telecommunications engineers
use it to mean 10^6 bit/s. And if two definitions of the megabyte are
not enough, a third megabyte of 1 024 000 bytes is the megabyte used to
format the familiar 90 mm (3 1/2 inch), "1.44 MB" diskette. The
confusion is real, as is the potential for incompatibility in standards
and in implemented systems.

And that is just a sample.

So really the whole computer industry needs better standardization, but
there is noone around
with the authority to set standards maybe ?

John

OK - I've run the installer, to /usr/local/mozilla, and used menudrake to
change the pointer on the menu items, but something's wrong.

If I start mozilla as root from /usr/local/mozilla I get the new version, but
despite changing the menu entries I get the old version from the menus.

I have re-named the .mozilla directory, but I don't know how to start it as a
user so that it can re-create my profile.
