Secondo me non ci riesci.

traccia sui mirror Mandrake.

graficamente *molto bella* - sembra funzionare in modo eccellente; e possiede
senz'altro i drivers per la tua stampante...

You can install KDevelope through RPMDrake - just type in kdev in the

[newbie] Mandrake 9.1 Installation Problem

2003-04-01 Thread Sendak, John
I wrote earlier that under Mandrake 9.0 I had a message Kenel panic : No
init found at boot-up.
Thanks to Stephen Kuhn, dfox and Leonardo Diciolla for your advice, but I
lacked the confidence and knowledge to follow your suggestions.

I tried to upgrade to Mandrake 9.1. After a successful installation I got
the message something like KDE not installed at boot-up. I thought I had
selected KDE as the graphical interface. I upgraded again, but got the same
message.

I then did an install of Mandrake 9.1. Once again I had a successful
installation. However, on boot-up, all I got was a screen with the message
:-
Mandrake Linux release 9.1 for i586
Kenel 2.4.21-0.13mdk on an i686/tty1
Localhost login:

I logged in as John - the user I had set up - and, as far as I can see
(being a complete beginner), I seemed to be in a full-screen mode shell.
However, I cannot see any way to minimize the shell and I can't see any
evidence of KDE or any other graphical interface.

To check that I hadn't overridden any crucial default in the installation, I
re-installed but got the same result.

I am now completely stuck for what to do.

Any suggestions very gratefully received.

Regards

John

Create an extra partition to use for /home. How big depends in part on how
many users there are on your system. In our small home lan there is a
certain amount of home space used for backing up important data. My /home is
6.6 GB, of which 5.1 GB is in use.

It will show up in your directory tree as /home, with subdirectories for every
user you create.

To set it up, during install, elect to do a manual (maybe expert?)
partitioning - I can't remember the exact wording. You will then get the
opportunity to say which partition is to be your /home directory, which is /,
and any others you have decided to set up manually (I don't bother with any
more, some people do). The advantage to having a /boot separate partition is
that if you install a second version of Mandrake (say when 9.2 comes out) you
will have less editing to do to make the multiboot work - but it's up to you,
it's not difficult.

The only other think that I can think of is deciding which format to use. Do
choose a journaling file system. There are many arguments as to which is the
best type, but for simplicity for a newbie I would recommend ext3. It's
better at recovery if anything goes wrong than the basic ext2, withouth
complications that can happen on the very rare occasions that Reiser etc go
wrong.

i think you need to remember or use command df

When you install new , in the section to define partition your can changeble

it depend on the type of your system files ..

Thanks for your reply. I thought that the installer had recognized the

which happened to be the 3D version. I will need to check on the card

I don't remember the details since it was more than a year ago, but

2003-04-01 Thread Benedetto Gorini
Hi,
could someone please help me to install mdk 9.1 on a Vaio PCG-Z600TEK?
It has an external pcmcia cd-rom. When I installed mdk 8.1 I used a
special boot disk called pcmcia-vaio-memorystick.img that I found in the
errata page.
With mdk 9.1 there is no equivalent img file. I tried to use the
pcmcia.img or to specify ide2=0x180,0x386 on expert mode but both
methods didn't work: the machine hangup after PCMCIA support configuration.
In the HW database my Vaio is reported to be compatible with mdk 9.1.
Please help me.
Thanks,

one bigger one. I know where the first one starts and where
the last one ends but not where they have merged. As a
result this (big) partition will not mount either, even
  read only.

What I really need is more info on some diagnostic and
recovery tool that may be available...

I'm not very good at fixin problems like this. It only happened
to me once sometime ago. Self inflicted :) IIRC, I tried booting the
install disk, and updating. Can't remember if that fixed it, or I had
 to go ahead an re-install.

I just stumbled across a tool that might be of some help, it's called gpart.

I messed up my mbr partition table (please don't ask) and needed to get my
partitions reread.

It works fine booting into a busybox shell with a floppy (or CD) and then
running gpart from another floppy on which the binary has been copied.
i.e. on the cml in the running busybox (after checking dmesg if your drive is
seen at all):

mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
cd /mnt/floppy
./gpart /dev/hda (or whatever your disk is)

and away it goes guessing the partitions and the filesystems they contained
including size et all:o)

Very nifty, indeed! A lifesaver:o)

You can get it here:

Good hunting,

[newbie] ADSL again

2003-04-01 Thread Anders Lind
Hello folks,

OK, here we go, now I think I have located why RP-PPPoE doesn't work
however it didn't get me anywhere, I installed PPP2.4.1, which doesn't
seems to be installed by default and after some dependencyproblems I got
it installed, and then I installed RP-PPPoE-package and tried to run
adsl-setup
but it claims to not being able to start pppd and that I need to install PPP
2.3.something
but as I earlier stated 2.4.1 is installed which rpm -q confirms, anyone
knows
what I can do there, is a simple reboot enough which seems to be strange

still nothing.

I get a splash screen for KDE 3.1 and it has 7 icons underneath it. It loads
upto the second icon which is a wrench and it says initializing system
services that's when it hangs and goes to a blue screen. doing some
research I think it may be a hardware problem.

Since this is a fresh install, I'm assuming you've set the system to
login via graphical mode instead of console mode - so you might want to
do a CTRL-ALT-F2 to get to a console login prompt - once you get there
and login as root, type: ldconfigat the prompt, then type: reboot
and after the system happily reboots/resets, try to login again. If you
can't get past that, then we'll attack another method...unless someone
wants to add their two cents...(or pence, or pfenning or whatever)

Actually, the cost of development tools is not much of an issue. When you are paying a
programmer $50-100K/yr, another $1100 or so for MS Visual Dev Stuido isn't that big of

Well,
for personal use, it is partial money issue. But for in the corporate
environment, it is a big issue, because developing with Microsoft very
expensive. Microsoft charges per head for development softwares. With Linux,
you can develop for free with Java, Perl, etc.

[newbie] Monitor trouble.

2003-04-01 Thread Keith Powell
I have just changed my monitor from a CRT one to a TFT one.

The old monitor was running with the same settings as the new one requires -
1024x768 at 75Hz.

The new one works well with Windows98 and with Libranet. I did not have to
change anything in Libranet, the new monitor just worked.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work in Mandrake9.0. As I said, the settings will be
correct. All is well during booting, until I get to the KDM log-in screen.
Then the screen goes blank and nothing further happens. So I can't look at
the monitor settings in the Mandrake control Centre to see if I can spot
anything wrong.

I then did a fresh clean install on a spare hard drive. All went smoothly
until I got to setting up the monitor. I spent ages trying different monitor
settings, but every time I tested the settings, I got a blank screen. Then it
went back to the monitor set-up menu and the screen sprang back to life.

So it appears to me, to be something to do with the XWindows set-up. But I
don't know what, or how to overcome the problem. If it is, why are things OK
in Libranet, but not in Mandrake? Very confusing!

If anyone can offer suggestions as to how I can solve this problem, I would be
very grateful.

Many thanks

Cheers

Keith.

P.S. Writing and sending this with Libranet, using the new monitor. It looks
great!

You are right , there is nothing on my web site which describes your problem.

If you can hear audio with xine, then obviously you have drivers installed and
working.

You appear to be using the alsa sound server, so install the xmms-alsa RPM and
select that as the output plugin in xmmsOptionsPreferences

Does that make a difference?

Nope, it first was using aRts sound server, i switched that to alsa and now
i can actually see the trackbar in XMMS scrolling, which it wasn't doing
previously (it was failing connecting to the aRts soundserver obviously).

But now, after all the modifications everyone in various forums/chat rooms
told me to apply, Xine doesn't play audio anymore.

Someone find me a rope and a stool.

You are right , there is nothing on my web site which describes your problem.

If you can hear audio with xine, then obviously you have drivers installed
and
working.

You appear to be using the alsa sound server, so install the xmms-alsa RPM
and
select that as the output plugin in xmmsOptionsPreferences

Does that make a difference?

The new one works well with Windows98 and with Libranet.
I did not have to change anything in Libranet, the new
 monitor just worked.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work in Mandrake9.0. As I said,
the settings will be correct. All is well during booting,
until I get to the KDM log-in screen. Then the screen
goes blank and nothing further happens. So I can't look
at the monitor settings in the Mandrake control Centre to
see if I can spot anything wrong.

I then did a fresh clean install on a spare hard drive.
All went smoothly until I got to setting up the monitor.
I spent ages trying different monitor settings, but every
time I tested the settings, I got a blank screen. Then it
went back to the monitor set-up menu and the screen
 sprang back to life.

So it appears to me, to be something to do with the
XWindows set-up. But I don't know what, or how to
overcome the problem. If it is, why are things OK in
Libranet, but not in Mandrake? Very confusing!

If anyone can offer suggestions as to how I can solve
this problem, I would be very grateful.

 Many thanks

 Cheers

 Keith.

P.S. Writing and sending this with Libranet, using the
 new monitor. It looks great!

Keith, your desription rings a bell : recently I got a brand
new TFT screen, plugged it into my 9.0 box and it worked.
Then, I got exited and bought a cheap graphics card (ATI
Rage Pro). After that, your problem was mine, exactly.

After fiddling around with numerous settings (each time
requiring a re-install, because the screen went dead) I
changed my x-server from 4.2 to the old 3.6 without
graphics acceleration, and voila : everything worked.

Although this is a wild guess, try changing your X-server.

As mean and horrible as it sounds, Xtart (THANKS CIVILME!) is NOT
installed by default, and you have to MANUALLY install it. I know that
this is a horrible, terrible oversight on the part of the MDK
development team, and I know how horrible and terrible it is to install
an RPM, but lo, this is the truth of the matter - it has to be manually
installed. I cried for weeks over this, wrote countless letters to the
President of France and to the Mandrakesoft administration, but I we
left bereft and shattered in finding that it's an extra and not part of
the distribution.

tried to figure it out by myself by searching linuxdoc and manpages to
no avail. Then i suddenly got a genius idea: I tried to play a video
file. Surprisingly, Xine has no problem with my audio, seems to be
only XMMS and well system beeps an such.
Is the problem related with XMMS, or Gnome, or the fact that my MP3's
are on a mounted FAT drive?

[newbie] Observation: Differences in Mandrake and Redhat

2003-04-01 Thread Stephen Kuhn
For all that don't know, I was a proponent of RedHat for 10 years and
only up until recently did I actually quit playing with MDK and start
using full time on my primary workstation/server. Meanwhile, I just
wanted to express some of what I've observed from a workstation/server
perspective as far as overall performance goes:

* Samba works faster than I've ever seen it work before. I don't know if
it's because of just the overall setup, or the ReiserFS that I use; but
it's blazing - whereas on RH - no matter what kind of setup I've done,
there is always a lag time/refresh time that begins to get rather
annoying. It's important for me to use Samba for in-home and for
clients/customers - and with performance like this - it truly outshines
anything I've done before with a RH server - and this is 9.1rc2 !!

* System wide performance is astounding - even though I tweak the
daylights outta RH after an installation, I ain't come close to this
type of performance and response.

* WINE performance blows away any of the RH's that I've seen.

* Graphics. What more can I say - great overall system performance
coupled with a great NVidia graphics card, self-compiled NVidia drivers;
enough to make a geek wet his pants. CUBE flies, any games fly, desktops
are clean, crisp and basically just fly...

* Networking et. al. is much more responsive and faster - NFS
imports/exports - Samba (mentioned before) - ftp, telnet, vnc - more
responsive.

* KDE 3.1 is killer - too bad the KDE 3.1 on RedHat 9 is still
chopped/hacked to death by the RH team - hence it sucks. Gnome sucks on
both platforms and that's sad because it used to be a great WM/Desktop,
but the Gnome team has been out with the fairies for the past 8 months
and I don't think they're coming back any time soon.

* VMWare performance is by far faster and less of a burden on the system
than it was under RH 7.2, 7.3, 8.0 and 8.0.92 - dunno if it's because of
the advanced kernel version, or what - but it's nice to have a bit more
response running XP under linux et. al.

* RH is still easier to compile programs under, but I'm not doing that
much anymore with the amount of RPM's that are created - by TexStar or
by the community at large...

* Porn viewing is quicker (did I put that in there?) Joking!

* POP/IMAP server functionality and network performance are phenomenal.
(Using SENDMAIL, FETCHMAIL, PROCMAIL - wows me to no end)

I'm not swaying from my path now - I'm rather happy with the results of
the past two months and am going to pursue this course; I'm considering
using MDK for custom-built servers when required as the network
performance and Samba performance exceed what I initially expected. Now
that I know how to GET RID OF POSTFIX and use SENDMAIL instead, I don't
forsee any problems with that in a large scale environment.

Although I haven't played around with RAID in MDK, I don't foresee any
problems in that respect - and with the amount of file system choices,
I'm happy I don't have to see out custom made mods to have a different
file system - RH is very strict on what they issue for standard file
systems.

I used to whinge about the file system layout - putting things in the
/usr/X11R6 subdirs never seemed good for me - but ya know, the more I
screw around with it, the better I like the idea - now I know where my
alternative wm's are located without having a hugely cluttered up
/usr/share.

That's my ramble for today - AND IT'S NOT AN APRIL FOOLS JOKE. Cheers!

[newbie] used external modem (sportster model 0701)

2003-04-01 Thread Anonymous
Earlier on this list, I was asking many questions
about my USR hardware PCI modem that was seen by
Mandrake 9.0, but that acted inconsistently once
online.

I've had my system and modem troubleshot, but the
modem works fine in windows (according to the modem
vendor, but not the system vendor), so I'm stuck with
a modem that may work in future versions (?), and if I
buy mandrake 9.1, rather than have 9.0 downloaded (?).

In the meantime, I found a used external modem ... I
plugged it in as is, turned it on, and used modemconf
... it said there was no modem ... what's the initial
impression? Are the 8 or so dip switches in back
relevant here?

I saw a thread about this earlier in February, but the
solution had to do with bios/windows (?), which does
not apply to my situation ... MD 9.0 installed only
...

Could be postgres or pgsql - look in /etc/passwd for userid's starting with
'p'. if you 'su' to root, then you won't be asked for passwd switching to
pgsql admin (or even change the password of that account). As pgsql admin,
use createuser and createdb commands to create a user and database, then
use these thereafter. If user and database have the same name, then that
user simply enters 'pgsql' to get an interactive session.

2003-04-01 Thread Derek Jennings
You should be able to uncomment the line for dbe extension.

Also since the log shows it is failing when it is trying to detect the screen
I am wondering if it is your screen config it does not like.

You could try reducing the default colour depth as an experiment
DefaultColorDepth 16

and you could try selecting a monitor with a higher refresh rate. (so long as
your hardware will support it)

Hi all,

I was wondering; using ssh -C -X IPadress_of.remote.host works fine in
exporting the Xserver.
Problem is the sound..me and my teenage daughter decided we wanted to play
tower toppler downstairs, where the game itself was installed on the PC
upstairs.
Consequence: My wife searched all over the place for the leaking fawcet she
heard, not noticing that the PC was on.

Anybody got any pointers on how to get sound working remotely?

Good luck,

[newbie] Problem with firewall

2003-04-01 Thread Pedro Alves

Hello all,

I live in a student residence in Aachen in
Germany.

I have internet access in my room, the problem is
that the firewall they've installed is configured in a way that instead of
blocking ports, everytime someone uses a forbiden port, he gets automatically
banned from using internet! The first time it happened to me, I've learned that
there's an incompatibility between CUPS searching for network printers and the
firewall.
They say it was port 511. So I've disabled CUPS service. Acouple of
days later I get network again, but after a few hours running ok, BAMM! no
network again. This time it was port 541.

The first time I was blocked, I was
using Mandrake 9.0, and the second time I had just installed 9.1 and disabled
CUPS. I think I was trying to use Kopete with ICQ plugin when I went
down.

-Is there anyway I can check which ports my PC trying to use whithout
being connected? I'm afraid to plug in the cable, because I don't know which
service may knock my connection down.
- Does Mandrake Firewall block outgoing ports, or just incoming
connections? if the latest is true how can I block outgoing ports??

Thanks in advance
Best Regards
Pedro Alves
