Re: [newbie] vectorlinux? Too much choices
Hello, Thank you for all your answers and now I'm confused with all the solutions... Not used to that after all the years with windows ;-) If I get it wright I can use MDK also with that config... and I have it already on cd. (save a lot of download time). I need a Xwindow program like Kde... If not my wife will kill me :o because it is here computer that I want to modify! And last of all I'm really a beginner with linux... see all the messages I mailed to the list the last weeks! Without the heavy weight Windowmanagers like KDE and Gnome even Mandracke9.1 will run OK providing there's not too many unnecessary services running. Good luck, HarM Slackware is a better choice. DebianAny version of Linux can run fine on the hardware you said, but yes, Slackware would be much better. Or Free BSD. If you can install Slackware, you can install Free BSD, they look the same and act almost exactly a like. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Questions with storage devices
Hello, Last night I was looking to create a usr partition using diskdrake under Mandrake Control Center...Then I could not understand why I have a mnt hda5 partition called win_d (it shows /r on the file system. So I went to see my storage devices and there I found this: Device Type Size MountP Free Full% /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part8 ? 6,3GB /home 5,7GB 9,8% /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part6 ? 5,8GB / 4,2GB 27% /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part5 ? 512,2MB/mnt/win_d 4,2GB 0,2% /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 ? 14,6GB / mnt/ win_c 4,2GB 25,3% /dev/hda8 ext3 N/A/home 0B N/A /dev/hda6 ext2 N/A/ 0B N/A /dev/hda5 vfat N/A/ mnt/win_d 0B N/A /dev/hda1 vfat N/A/ mnt/win_c 0B N/A 1/ The 4 last devices are not mounted when I click on it. So what is this? 2/ There is no such D drive on my win partition. I have one big 14,6 GB for windows. Where does it come from?? 3/ By the way is the root partition not too big with 5,8 GB and only 27% used? There is a lot of free space and I will not install a lot of new softs. 4/I would like to shrink my windows drive (starting slowly to remove XP) is there any trick to do it or can I unmount and resize it in the control center with no risk? [newbie] Firewall
Hello, I tried to setup a firewall since my notebook will be personal... I went to mandrake control center and removed the cross in no firewall at the Drakfirewall.(I left all the boxes blank... hope this is good so) Then It asked me if I want to install the shorewall package. I clicked ok. I put cd1 like it requested. And then Mandatory package missing. I browsed the cd and I found a package called /shorewall-1.4.6c-2mdk.noarch.rpm/ If that is the package it is already installed. So how can I then setup the firewall? [newbie] SOLVED: sound card problems
I don't know if this will help anyone or not but I just accidently solved my sound problems. I had the same problem with no sound with a Cmedia chipset ( 1878?). I was able to hear audio cd's but nothing else. I double click'd on an mp3 and it opened xmms, which looked as if it was playing but nothing came out. I had previously set kde sound to alsa as thats what I was pretty sure was installed but no luck. So then I started digging in xmms preferences ( right click on the x in the top left corner ) and discovered under Audio I/O Plugins a Output Plugin line which stated OSS DRIVER 1.2.9 libOSS.so there where no other options under the arrows, so I went back to KDE sound and changed it to Open Sound Server and VIOLA!! Re: [newbie] Using CD-RW with K3b
Very true, and we could also add that older CD-ROM drives (or hifi CD players) can fail to read CD-RW disks completely, no matter what is written on them. The subject of burning to CD can become very messy very quickly :-( Le Samedi 6 Mars 2004 00:23, Bryan Phinney a écrit : Well, the subject title says Using CD-RW which implies rewriteable CD media. So, you can erase the disk, rewrite the file back again, you just need to completely transfer all files to the hd, erase and then rewrite. However, I was not really referring to rewriting, I was saying that if you create a multi-session CD that has 200MB worth of files on it with the CD not finalized so that you can create additional sessions, some CD-ROM drives can not read the format. They are expecting a completed TOC that is only really created when you finalize the media after all sessions have been completed. Just an FYI for him to keep in mind in case he was planning on using the disk in the meantime. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

[newbie] KolourPaint 1.0.1 Seagull
Hello, You might like to try KolourPaint, a really good paint program for KDE. You can download Mandrake 9.2 packages at kolourpaint.sf.net. The pages list all the features, so I won't go over them all here. I just want to highlight some of the novel and useful features in KolourPaint: - Colour Eraser - Colour Similarility - Transparency. You can do it on selections, even use it as a colour, plus on text! (Use an opaque background and transparent text.) - Selections that you can undo and redo - rectangular, freeform as well as elliptical/circular. - Shape centring! You can now draw a circle/rectangle with the centre where your mouse pointer is by holding Ctrl. - Autocrop As I've noted before, there's a lot of other features. The development team has obviously done some excellent requirements engineering - even the eraser sizes are well thought out. Of course, I do have to admit I have a small vested interest in KolourPaint - so don't take my word for it, download it and try it out! By the way, this is an exclusive announcement. The official one hasn't come out yet! Software this good only gets released once every 28 years. Regards, _nasturtium P.S. There's 2 easter eggs in KolourPaint. Try and find them! If you go to http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php?company=Cirrus+ Logiccard=CS4236chip=CS4236module=cs4236#modp You will see an example modules.conf configuration for your driver. You could try copying this into your /etc/modules.conf I haven't had a chance yet to try your suggestion, but I tried following the instructions on the ALSA page a few days ago when I was using RedHat 9, and I had no luck. Of course, I used the sample config exactly as is. I didn't try setting any of the options (port, irq, dma, etc.) because I had no idea what to put. Is there any way to determine what IRQ, DMA, etc. the card is currently using so that I can specify those values in modules.conf when the driver loads? Thanks. Given that your soundchip was not detected on installation, or that alsaconf fails to detect it, then I suspect you may may a problem with IRQ conflicts. If you type 'dmesg' in a terminal you will see all the boot messages. If you scroll up you may see some clues. The command 'cat /proc/interrupts' will tell you how IRQs are currently assigned. Things that can resolve interrupt problems are :- 1/ Boot with 'noapic' - In Mandrake Control CentreBootBootloader tick the 'Force No APIC' button This fixes a lot of these sorts of problems. 2/ In your BIOS disable any onboard devices you do not intend to use - This often causes IRQ lines to be allocated differently. 3/ In your BIOS select PnP Operating System =No 4/ If your BIOS allows manual selection of IRQ lines, try allocating a line. If no selection is possible try moving a PCI board to a different slot. Sometimes IRQ lines are allocated according to slot number. If you have your /etc/modules.conf file configured then the driver will load if the card is detected during boot. dmesg will document that happening. All the new stuff will show up first on the international site, so hang out there. Anyway, I have been using this firmware with my iMP-350 for the last couple of weeks using oggs encoded at 128kbps and the performance is outstanding. No skipping at all. I did have some problems with my ogg library. There were a lot of artifacts even though the bit rate was within spec. I think the problem had to do with them being encoded with a beta version of oggenc, as they were originally ripped and encoded about 18 months ago. If the decoder in the firmware is written very efficiently to fit in the limited flash rom and is based on the current spec, then it probably cannot deal with the small differences in the ogg files made with older versions of the encoder. The software decoders in the media players probably have some code to correct for this since their memory footprint is not so limited. I re-encoding the same disks with the oggenc in Mandrake 10 and it eliminated the problem. HTH -- /g Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Anyhow, if anybody here can report on performance that would be great. I have found the US website is often at least 1 and sometimes 2 firmware revs behind the International site. HTH -- /g Greg, do you encode by specifying bitrate or quality level? I typically encode at as low as -q 3 to save disc space (playing oggs on a Zaurus using CF), which reports a nominal bitrate of 112. Just wondering if you've found a good -q level for your purposes on the iMP-350 Thanks, Todd Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Re: [newbie] problems with Nvidia video card and its driver
Hi Juan Firstly, the driver you have is old. The newest driver is version 1.0.5336. Just so you know. In your XF86Config-4, you have the following lines: Section Device Identifier device1 Driver vesa Option DPMS EndSection That driver line there has to be set to nvidia. I can't say I understand why you have NVIDIA driver lines in your logfile if you're using the VESA driver, but anyway - that's one possible problem. There may be packages that are in cooker that aren't automatically going to be included when you urpmi, since by urpmi'ing you are just updating to new versions of the files you install. So with that qualification, I'm at final now, because I've been urpmi'ing for the last 30 days, if not more. I didn't install RC1 although I made disks - I installed from beta1 I think. One thing I may do soon is to take RC1 and update everything back to what it is now on my other partition, which houses ATM 9.2 + cooker before 10.0 started. And that's because the partition I have 10.0 in now is a bit small (5 megs) rather than the bigger partition I had 9.2 in. As a result, I have less space for big /tmp things like audacity runs, dvd rips and space to install more things. to make the update process run smoothly. Any additional guidance on servers and what to and what not to check would be appreciated. That usually takes experience. I can attach my /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg file though. Once you put that in place, then you can just do urpmi.update -a, followed by a urpmi --auto-select and in a while you'll be up to 10.0. If you get 'curl failures' or things like that, just wait a while and repeat the commands, as 9 times out of 10 it means that the mirror is clogged with too many users. My system ATM is setup to use uninett.no for main, sunet.se for contrib, and some turkish mirror alongside a french one for plf. None of them have as many user-friendly tools to help the newbie as Mandrake and SuSE. Unfortunately, Mandrake 9 and up will not run well using either KDE or Gnome on a computer such as you describe. You would have to use a different, lightweight desktop manager to access the gui-based software. I use Mandrake 8.2 on a similar setup with full use of KDE and Gnome, but not the most current KDE or Gnome. When I have really resource-intensive work to do on that system, I use Blackbox which is a minimalist desktop manager. To use the utilities and applications that come with KDE and Gnome, you merely have to have KDE and Gnome installed (although there are exceptions). You don't have to actually run them, and it is running those desktop managers that eats up resources. They consume a lot of space and on smaller systems that could also be a problem. Blackbox doesn't really appeal to many people coming from mswin, but IceWM does and it is a lightweight desktop manager which looks similar to win95. Mandrake 8.2 is no longer supported, but if you have a favorite discount Linux CD site (e.g., Cheapbytes) in your region of the world, you usually can get copies inexpensively on CD (including a CD with the advisories and security updates) via the mails. I haven't checked any mirrors to see if the 8.2 files are still available that way. You can always try your current version of Mandrake on the older system with a desktop manager like IceWM to see if it is satisfactory (back up your old system so you can restore it in case you don't like what happens). My HP 4P scanner worked fine with an Adaptec SCSI card in Windows 2000 I installed the card and attached scanner. HardDrake recognizes the SCSI card as a Adaptec AHA 7850 ScannerDrake does not find a scanner. When I manually install the scanner it is listed in list of HP scanners. After supposed installation the scanner is still not listed as installed. In the simplest of terms, can some one please tell me how to install the scanner? Both go through the boot up fine but 2.6.xx ends with just a blank screen and no keyboard action. 2.4.xx loads up and runs but apps like OO.org just kind of hang with transparent screens. I continue to explore. But for now this looks like a PITA. Anyone getting better results? So, I solved the problem by reinstalling 10.0 with only the 2.6.2 kernel and then went in and edited X11 to take out the driver nvidia and replace with nv. So the Nvidia driver that comes with 10.0 is not compatible with the 2.6 kernel. I am leary of going and getting the one on the NVIDIA site cause of the boot up problems this release is having on my comp. Anyhoo, the bugger runs. I hope some of this gets cleared up soon. -- Dennis M. linux user #180842 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[newbie] dvd plugin for xine
I have a 850 AMD cpu 640 megs of ram GForce TI 4400 AGP Tyan Motherboard I have been surfing for the plugins for xine so I can play dvds in Mandrake 9.2 I am still new at this and all the different rpms and tars I find are confusing. I'm not sure which one to use or how many to use. If I could just have a good source to download from that works well I could probably figure out how to install it. Mike Adolf said: That's great! I'll give it a try as soon as I get a chance. Did you run alsaconf to autodetect the card using that driver? Or did you just manually configure it and it worked? I probably won't get a chance to try it tonight, and I'm going to be out of town tomorrow, but I'll report back as soon as I try it. Thanks. I did not do anything with alsa at the time I changed to 4232 using harddrake. But, I may have worked (played) with alsa in earlier attempts on sound. Can't remember. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me :( I tried to run alsaconf using the 4232 drivers, and it hung my machine just like the 4236 did. Then I tried to modeprobe it, and I got a bunch of errors. Then I ran dmesg, and it said that the soundcard was not detected. At least with the 4236, I can load it. Oh well, thanks for the suggestion. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Derek Jennings said: Given that your soundchip was not detected on installation, or that alsaconf fails to detect it, then I suspect you may may a problem with IRQ conflicts. If you type 'dmesg' in a terminal you will see all the boot messages. If you scroll up you may see some clues Thanks for all the tips, Derek. I just got back into town, and I probably won't have time to try them out until Monday, but I'm looking forward to it, and I will report back as soon as I have tried everything. No it is. Zeb discovered that that a depmod needs to be run to get the nvidia module to load. Thanks Greg, I installed the drivers from the 3rd CD and that fixed it. I then had problems with no mouse thru the zonet kvm switch so I put the USB logitech optical mouse in the usb port and that fixed the mouse problem. I must have been having a irq conflict. Any way thanks for the bug point. Now I can wring this puppy out and see what I can break on my own. : ) -- Dennis M. linux user #180842 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Lost gnome-panel after installing 4.4.0 XFree86 on 9.2 AMD64
I installed the AMD64 binary version (yes, on an AMD64 system) of XFree86 4.4.0, downloaded from the XFree86.org site. I installed on an eMachines M6805, and I'm pleased to say that I've been able to get the native 1280x800 resolution on the LCD, and I've been able to simultaneously drive an attached monitor at an independent resolution and refresh rate. This laptop uses the ATI 9600 Mobility chip with 64 MB discrete RAM, and I'm running the RC1 Mandrake 9.2 AMD64 release. I'm using the radeon driver. The issue I'm having is with gnome-panel, and unfortunately I don't see a pattern in the problem. The very first time I started up X after installing 4.4.0, both screen had their own panel, and they both worked. I shut down and added Xinerama. When I rebooted, only the CRT had a panel. If I put the mouse on the LCD and hit alt-F1, I get the system menu in the upper right corner of the LCD, and it works. I've verified in /var/log/XFree.0.log that X recognizes the LCD as being the first monitor. If I now comment out Xinerama, when I start X I have *no* gnome-panel at all! Alt-F1 will still pop up the system menu in the upper right corner of the LCD. What can I do to get the panel on the LCD? And where can I find the configuration options for the radeon driver? Thanks. -- Guy Rouillier Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
