Ye it is an Excel file. it is a Self-extracting Archive .( thanks for the

I decompressed it with Ark which showed an .xls file. When trying to open it
with Open office I get: *this file is password protected*
I don´t know how to get around that

[newbie] postfix as local, firewall and rejected messages... long?

2004-05-27 Thread Terence Golightly
List,

Where do I begin? First was having no local mail delivery. I thought
I'd install Postfix. So I went to Derek Jennings web site. Nice, but I
just have a standalone machine with an ADSL connection. I read some of
the docs setup some aliases for root and no go. I no get mail. My log
files showed rejected messages and a running of the mailq command
provided the following:

742CE99E64 342 Thu May 27 01:01:00 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
   (connect to myhouse.net[220.80.108.83]: Connection
refused)
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Anyway to get local mail I discovered that port 25 needed to be opened
on my firewall. So modified the shorewall rules file to permit a tcp
connection on port 25 to the fw and into the machine:

##
#ACTION SOURCE DESTPROTO DESTSOURCE ORIGINALRATEUSER/

# PORTPORT(S) DESTLIMIT GROUP
ACCEPT net fw icmp8
ACCEPT fw net icmp
ACCEPT net fw tcp 25
ACCEPT fw net tcp
#LAST LINE -- ADD YOUR ENTRIES BEFORE THIS ONE -- DO NOT REMOV

Hope this doesn't compromise my security?

Well.. I finally started getting mail from the terminal and into evo 1.4
after finally figuring out delivery was local by mbox or
/var/spool/mail/terryg. I still however get the above rejected messages
and have tried to look at postfix docs, but there is alot there and I'm
want to keep it simple right now. So how can I fix the rejected message
and get back to that notion that my postfix mailer works? I have
enclosed my /etc/postfix/main.cf file.

Thanks for reading,

Terry

I just recently built boson 0.10 under 10.0 Official. Runs like a dog because
I don't have a video driver with h/w acceleration support, but that's a
separate issue.

I ran into several version issues with autoconf and the related gnu build
system programs. Mandrake installs by default ancient versions of these (2.13
of autoconf; 2.59 is the latest stable), apparently for backward
compatibility with older programs. They seem to have forgotten about forward
compatibility :^). If you install the latest, it actually installs a script
that tries to choose the correct version, so I don't know why the don't do
this in the first place. You also have to upgrade automake and aclocal.

I don't remember exactly the errors I got. There was something explicit about
having to upgrade autoconf, I think, but after that, and before I realized I
had to separately upgrade automake and aclocal, I got a lot of weird
messages.

If you haven't upgraded all these, do it and see if it helps. Mine built
successfully after all upgrades.

Also, the various build steps weren't entirely clear to me from the web page.
As I worked it out, I put them all into a script (I think for example that
all the "make install"s have to be done after all the "make"s have been
done). I've attached it here. Feel free to use this as you see fit.

Hope this helps.

[newbie] sigmatel mp3 player

2004-05-27 Thread Bill Winegarden
Hi,
I was wondering if there has been progress on mounting these usb mp3 players.
In that other os mine is identified as sigmatel mscn usb device. A google on
that term reveals another player using the same systema Transcend
JetFlash. In their literature they suggest a simple mount command
from /dev/sda1 is all that's needed. Of course, this is not functional in
LM10, to my knowledge. I have tried both kernels on the LM10 CE distro. Has
this been addressed in 'Official'?
Has anyone been successful with this usb mass storage player?

Thanks and regards,
Bill W.

I got a long form letter saying that it was Netscapes fault that my browser
didn't work. However, they were currently using WebConnect and were in the
process of rewriting thier "stuff" to be more compatible with later versions
of Netscape.
Since I didn't say anything about Netscape in my complaint email, you can see

Oh well, at least I can complain and if I could easily move my business
accounts to the bank where I have my personal accounts I would.
Thanks for the responses.

I usualy keep on of the floppy or CD mini-distributions around for
things like this. The other option is to boot by feeding the kernel the
option "init=/bin/bash". (append="init=/bin/bash") This will boot you
directly to the bash shell, bypassing most of the security of the
system. You will want to reboot after fixing things.

You could try booting from your CD1 . Hit F1 at the first prompt where it says
"more options". At the prompt type 'rescue' you will go into a shell where
you can mount the existing partitions. Trouble is I am not sure what to do
once you get there.

If you have it, Knoppix or some other livecd distro might be able to help you.

Hi Derek,

Cheers for the quick response. No I'm buggered... Run level 1/failsafe
gives all the same problems. The root account is disabled because it
can not be accessed/logged into from any tty device.

Can I mount the physical hard disk on a different Linux box and change
the securetty file? How would I do this? Would it just show up in the
mounts if I plug it into an IDE port or do I need to do else to mount
it (e.g. alter fstab on the other machine)? I.e. hate Slackware
because its harder to find the relevant configuration files for stuff...

Its all a bit bizare because the machine is stable as an internet
gateway its not urgent (it still works without root access). But I did
want to setup a place holding webserver on it today (hah hah thats not going happen
now :-).

A [golf] ball hitting a tree shall be deemed not to have hit the tree.
Hitting a tree is simply bad luck and has no place in a scientific game.
The player should estimate the distance the ball would have traveled if
it had not hit the tree and play the ball from there, preferably atop a
nice firm tuft of grass. -- Donald A. Metz

Are you sure this is an Excel file? IF it is really an Excel file,
it should open with OpenOffice, BUT the .exe file extension is *not*
an Excel file - it is a Windows executable (program) file! I suggest
you double-check with the sender before attempting to open it...

I'm new to Mandrake (I have little bits of experience with various Linux

Yes, you need Samba. Lot's of resources on how to set it up as a domain

Paul,

You can also try http://www.rarlab.com/rar/rarlinux-3.3.0.tar.gz . The
guys at rarlabs have a linux command line version that works well with
.rar files. The website indicates it's a trial version, but you could
say that I'm still trying it out. If that doesn't help, WinRAR works
well with wine.

I think you need an LDAP-enabled server. There's something about it in
the KOrganizer Help pages.

Isn't it a IMAP server instead (or POP3)?
Security options to investigate:
 - use POP3s (secure)
- use SSH tunnel
IMAP for mail, LDAP for remote calendars, IIRC.

The remote Windows machine neither knows nor cares what file system the host
is using.

The server can serve any type of file system to clients using Samba.
The only thing you have to worry about is the permissions. A Samba client can
only read/write to folders to which they have permission.

For example a Samba client 'fred' cannot write to a Linux folder owned by
'joe' unless the appropriate permissions are set.

This is true for FAT32 partitions as well as Ext3 (there is little need to use
Ext2 anymore). But because a FAT32 partition has no concept of permissions,
when Linux mounts a FAT32 partition it will apply the permissions defined in
your /etc/fstab file to the entire partition.

If you want all your Samba clients to be able to read/write to a FAT32
partition you must set the option umask=0 in the line for that partition in
the fstab file. This makes the perms 777 and anyone can read/write to the
partition

Yes, I did. I simply told my former bank, that if they couldn't make
a standards-compatible webservice, then I couldn't trust them my
money. I don't think they had the faintest idea of what I was
talking about, though. Anyway, they lost a customer, and I would
never humiliate myself by letting my browsers pretend to come from
the dark side.

Interestingly MicroSoft has recently paid Opera $12.75M as compensation for
deliberately sending bad html to Opera browsers in MSN so people would get a
bad impression of Opera.

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=16119

When MSN started 'borking' Opera in MSN, Opera responded by releasing the
Opera 'BorkBork' edition that would automatically translate MSN pages into
'BorkBork'. An example of which can be seen here

It is nice to see a company with a sense of humour.

I tried Thunderbird 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4, but there continued to be usability
issues for me. It's IMAP support appeared buggy and slow and most of my
mail accounts are IMAP, and it would crash whenever my ISP's news server had
reached it's connection limit (common with my ISP). It never did detect
junk mail for me (perhaps this only affected it's IMAP support?), not that
OE does that either :)...

I'll give the current version a shot anyway.
Thanks for the reminder.

Asa
