The firewall isn't a problem as the same Notebook (with the same eth
card etc.) does make the connection without a problem when running
Knoppix 3.6 Live Linux on it!!! Besides, no firewall is activated on my
Mandrake box. The known_hosts file was also deleted but no effect!

I think it should be something with the 10.1 distro

Any people from Mandrake ever heard of this problem??

There is one thing that is a little unusual about the machine: It was

what video card? NVidia? download matching kernel source (to what ever
kernel you are booting) and the respective NVidia *.run installer from
NVidia to update the video to match the updated kernel
might want the open GL files etc

I found out the Video card is an NVidia Riva 128. This video card does not
need special Nvidia drivers or kernel modules, and should be supported by
the default nv_drv driver for X.

Since I don't recall fussing with Nvidia drivers where I did the 9.2
 install, this makes sense.

Are there other things I could be looking for that might cause this kind of
 freeze?

 Thanks again!

 Mark
this card sure shoulda had the NVidia Closed source drivers, perhaps you had a
powerpack in 9.x that had the drivers included, and I promise, with this weak
(as in not much memory, in relation to what cards today have) and old of a
video card, if you want open GL games to run at a usable speed at all, you
are gonna want to mess around and get the propriety drivers from NVidia.
just go to NVidia's website and download the *.run file and download the
kernel source for your default kernel from a Mandrake mirror. follow the
instruction, and I bet you see a load of difference in open GL games.
it is possible you have some services running that are eating your system
memory too, so you might want to run 'top' from a text term, adn see if you
have something chewing your CPU cycles, or eating memory space. but that will
not make as much a diff as getting the closed source drivers for your video
card.

For 10.1 Community, same as for 10.0 Community, there are *no*
'update' sources. Updates for Community are found in 'main', not in
a separate source.

Go to easyurpmi, select 10.1 Community sources for 'main',
'contrib', 'jpackage' and 'plf'.

Every day, open a root terminal and do this:
urpmi.update -a --no-md5sum urpmi --auto-select
This will get you a list of updates for all packages that you have
installed.

Curl usually fails - you should be using wget instead. As root, open
your /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg file, and add this at the top:

{
  verify-rpm: 0
  downloader: wget
}

Connecting is no big deal..I couldn't do without, actually:)

Assuming that you aren't connecting as root, you do have to give the specific

There is absolutely nothing wrong with 10.1's handling of ssh so it HAS to be

But if you want real help you'll have to supply more info than just I can't

Maybe something like the output you get when running with the v (verbose)

[newbie] MySQL 4.1 doesn't start in 9.2, 10.0 and 10.1

2004-10-08 Thread Adolfo Bello
Hi:

I've worked with MySQL 4.1 since the alpha release (4.1.0). I always
download the latest rpms from mysql.com and install them with rpm. Until
version 4.1.4 every thing was just fine.

However, when I tried to install 4.1.5 rpms in my fully updated Mandrake
10.0, I got an error telling me that mysql didn't have permissions to
access /root/tmp. MySQL was installed but couldn't be started.

Humm, something wrong with this rpms. I post a message in the mysql list
and they told me to give, temporarily, 777 access to /root/tmp to start
the service, which I did. The service started but I couldn't work with
the database after settings /root/tmp permissions back to the original
ones (700).

I went back to install 4.1.4, which I had working before, and I got the
same error. My conclusion was that something was wrong with my box. I
modified the mysql init script in /etc/init.d to start mysql as user
root and the database started working nicely. After that I installed
4.1.5 which is now working without problem. However, running mysql as
root is not considered a good security practice.

Then, one of my coworker, who uses Mandrake 9.2, told me that he was
facing the same problem with 4.1.5. After modifying mysql init script as
I did the data base started to work.

Then I decided to go to a different computer and installed 10.1 CE. The
same problem with mysql. Again, modifying mysql init script solved the
situation.

Decided to go deeper into it, I installed mysql in a box running Debian
3.0r2 using the generic Linux installer. No problem whatsoever. Then I
tried installing mysql in 10.0 using the same binary and I got the same
problem. BTW, Debian has no /root/tmp at all.

At this point, I believe that there is something in Mandrake causing the
problem but I have no idea where to start looking at.

Can I just remove /root/tmp and try to start mysql again? Has anybody in
this list tried to install MySQL 4.1.4 or 4.1.5 in 9.2 or 10 fully
updated or in 10.1 CE without update?

Can some body give me a hint about where the problem might be?

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Adolfo

Sounds like the init script is picking up root's TMPDIR TMP variables.
You might try unsetting these in the init script, rather than running
MySQL as root.

You'll note the mandrake package defines these vars in start:

TMPDIR=/tmp
export TMPDIR
TMP=/tmp
export TMP

Sounds like the init script is picking up root's TMPDIR TMP variables.
You might try unsetting these in the init script, rather than running
 MySQL as root.

You'll note the mandrake package defines these vars in start:

 TMPDIR=/tmp
 export TMPDIR
 TMP=/tmp
 export TMP

That was it!

It is working now as user mysql.

Thanks a lot.

Adolfo

It means that the GLX module is not loaded.
There are a number of reasons why this might be.
1/ You are using a video driver that does not support GLX such as 'vesa'.
2/ You have a GLX capable video driver such as 'nv', but GLX is disabled
in your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file (Look to see if the line Load glx
is commented out )
3/ You have GLX enabled but it is the wrong library. For example if you
are using the closed source 'nvidia' driver you must also be using the
Nvidia GLX module too.
What to do :-
Look at the log file /var/log/XFree86.0.log it will tell you precisely
which modules loaded and why anything failed.
Tell us which driver you are using. It will be listed in the
file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 in the Device section. The glx module

What's the line one should use so that it loads the nvidia glx driver

Load /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so
but first the nvidia driver has to be downloaded and compiled if you have not
already done so. Also the nvidia glx driver has to match the release number
of the nvidia kernel module.

Yes. Follow the instructions on the Nvidia site to install it.
You will need to have the gcc compiler installed in order to run it, and you
must be in a text console at the time. To get to a text console hit
Ctl+Alt+F1 log in as root and then enter ' init 3'

After it is installed you must change the driver from 'nv' to 'nvidia'
The 'Load glx' line can normally be left as it is. Only change it to
'Load /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so' if you still have problems.

I find it convenient to use the text based file manager 'mc' to do the
editing. To install it 'urpmi mc' and then enter 'mc' to start it up.

The proprietary 'nvidia' driver is _not_ needed for OpenGL
support. The GPL 'nv' driver actually has better GL* support.
I have a GeF4 usin the 'nv' driver. Usually the problem is that
the line Load glx has been commented out (ie, disabled) in
whatever XF86config file the system is usin. Removing the '#'
from the line and re-starting X should fix this if the hardware
supports GLX.

If comcast is anything like Earthlink, shouldn't it be

Nope, smtp.comcast.net is correct. I need TLS and CRAM-MD5 to authenticate.

[newbie] Onboard Microphone Support for NVIDIA nForce chipset

2004-10-08 Thread Robert McIntosh
Hi,

I'm running Mandrake 10.0 on an ASUS Mobo (A7N8X-X). I've got about
everything working hardware-wise except the microphone. By far, this is
the most seemless Linux or BSD installation on this computer. The
chipset is NVIDIA nForce 400 (northbridge) and nForce MCP
(southbridge). I had downloaded the package from NVIDIA for Linux
drivers and installed that, however that created more problems then it
solved. The microphone got some heinous output (nothing more then a
hiss now and again) but the (onboard) soundcard wasn't working across
the few applications I require sound on (xmms, for instance).

Currently the sound card is using the snd-intel8x0 driver as reported by
the Hardware Browser under Mandrake's Control Center. This driver does
fine except the microphone is a lost cause.

Does anyone have pointers or solved this problem with nForce onboard
mics?

TIA,
Robert

Re: [newbie] Re: Dual Boot Dual HDD

2004-10-08 Thread Adam Messinger
I'm on my work PC, and hence don't have access to Linux for confirmation
of this, but I think there's a way to solve your problem in Mandrake
Control Center.

There should be a Boot category, or something similar, that you can
click on in MCC. Under this you should find an icon labeled Boot
Loader. Click on this to make configuration changes to LILO or GRUB. I
*think* one of the changes you can make is which mount point each OS
choice in the list boots. This is probably what you want to change to
fix this particular problem.

I also had a similar experience when helping a friend upgrade to

With 9.2, he was happily dual booting with Windows 95 (98?).
After upgrading to 10.0, selecting the windows option produces
a black screen with a blinking cursor.
However, if I go to BIOS and tell it to boot off of the Windows drive

I believe he tried switched to grub and got the same result.
Is there any way to make lilo or grub boot Windows again? It's on a
second drive all by itself.

Brandon, put this in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0

DHCP_TIMEOUT=5

This of course, assumes that you are using DHCP. You can play with the value
(5) to get the best performance.

HTHs. :-)

PS If nothing else, compare what is in ifcfg-eth0 to ifcfg-wlan0.

After installing Mandrake 10.0 I noticed that Konqueror was extremely slow

Once a host was found the Konqueror was at maximum speed.
It took me some time to figure out what the problem was, but found a
solution here : http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=2135

==
There seems to be alot of this going on lately. The consensus seems to be
that ipv6 is causing it. If you want to disable ipv6 you just add the
following line to either /etc/modules.conf for 2.4 kernel
or /etc/modprobe.conf for 2.6 kernel.

alias net-pf-10 off
==

This solution works for me.

connects, pppd terminates 10-20 secs later, saying

 Oct 6 22:59:32 case pppd[7104]: pppd 2.4.2 started by root, uid 0
 Oct 6 22:59:32 case pppd[7104]: using channel 2

 Oct 6 23:00:02 case pppd[7104]: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
 Oct 6 23:00:02 case pppd[7104]: Connection terminated.
 Oct 6 23:00:02 case pppd[7104]: Exit.

 My /etc/ppp/options:

 lock
 noauth
 noipdefault
 usepeerdns

My Pap-secrets and Chap-secrets seem correct:

 # Secrets for authentication using PAP
 # client server secret IP addresses

 'mylogin' * 'mojpswd' *
 mylogin * mojpswd

I've tries both KPPP and wvdial, changed modem from USR 56K external to
some Conexant HSFi V.92 PCI softmodem. Everything is the same.
I have not editied any initial scripts manually, everything was created
with Internet wizard from drakconf and KPPP.

 Can anyone help?

Yup, edit your /etc/ppp/options file to reflect the following, your
problem should(tm) 'go away'

The lines in question are those beginning: icp and ipcp.

Take a look at the descriptions in man pppd for more information.

 cut here
lock
debug
noauth
defaultroute
lcp-max-configure 45
ipcp-accept-local
ipcp-accept-remote
idle 600
 cut here

Cheers

[newbie] how to move mail from KMail (MDK10) to windows

2004-10-08 Thread g2
Hi folks,

I am in a situation where I would like to move all the saved messages I have
in KDE mail into a program under windows.

I think I might be using the mozilla thunderbird.
I do have a fat32 partition that I can see from both the linux and windows
environments. Can anyone explain how I might go about importing the mail
from KDE under linux into thunderbird in windows xp?

Thanks a bunch!

Gideon

Sorry, Jesse, that ain't gonna work. This should work:

Expect to get a confirmation back very quickly, and you should be good to go.

And, please turn off the html. Plain text is _strongly_ preferred in these
parts. Otherwise, expect flames or unanswered posts. You'll have to change a
setting somewhere in OE. (Sorry, but it's been 2+ years since I've used OE,
so I can't give you more detailed instructions. But since you're smart enough
to come looking here, you shouldn't have any trouble.)

  Hi,

I have wired and wireless PCMCIA cards in my laptop. At home I connect
wireless, at work, I am wired. The wired interface, eth0, fails almost
instantly on boot at home - good. At work the wireless interface, wlan0,
takes a couple of minutes to fail - bad. Is there anything that I can do
to make the wireless interface fail more quickly?

  Thanks,
  Brandon (currently wired at work:)

 Brandon, put this in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0

 DHCP_TIMEOUT=5

This of course, assumes that you are using DHCP. You can play with the
value (5) to get the best performance.

 HTHs. :-)

PS If nothing else, compare what is in ifcfg-eth0 to ifcfg-wlan0.

Thanks, I'll gve a try - Let you know how it works on Monday.

I have had this problem in the past with external modems. Some on suggested
that I not lock the speed(I think) but I never tried it.

[newbie] Wireless showing as sl0?

2004-10-08 Thread Edgars Smits
I'm running 10.1 on a Dell D600 with a Broadcom wireless card. I've
installed ndiswrapper, installed the Broadcom drivers, run modprobe
ndiswrapper, everything seems to be OK, but when I run iwconfig I don't
see a wlan0 entry, instead I get:

Warning: Driver for device sl0 has been compiled with an ancient version
of Wireless Extension, while this program support version 11 and later.
Some things may be broken...
sl0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ESSID:off/any Nickname:

  RTS thr=-1073746848 B Fragment thr=-1073746848 B
  Encryption

  Power Management:on

Trying to set up the wireless card in MCC points me to the same sl0, and
of course I can't get it to work.

Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?
