Re: [newbie] ssh: read from socket failed in a fresh 10.1
The firewall isn't a problem as the same Notebook (with the same eth card etc.) does make the connection without a problem when running Knoppix 3.6 Live Linux on it!!! Besides, no firewall is activated on my Mandrake box. The known_hosts file was also deleted but no effect! I think it should be something with the 10.1 distro Any people from Mandrake ever heard of this problem?? So here's the 9.2 - 10.0 upgrade problem I'm trying to troubleshoot: Launching some games, like Maelstrom, now completely freezes the machine, when it didn't before. The cursor quit moving, and the keyboard completely quit responding. (Pressing Caps Lock doesn't even turn on the Cap Lock light). I tried capturing the output of the launch in a file: Maelstrom 21 file.txt After the necessary hard reboot, my file.txt isn't created. I tried using both 2.4 and 2.6 kernels with the same result. What else could cause something like this? There is one thing that is a little unusual about the machine: It was 200Mhz processor that I used a special upgrade kit to allow to take a 700Mhz processor. That has worked great, and has not been responsible for any problems that I've aware of. I checked the ChangeLog for Maelstrom and didn't see anything unusual around the 9.2 - 10.0 releases. Considering that other games have the problem, I imagine it's something more general. If you have ideas about the general direction I could look in, that would be appreciated! Thanks! Mark what video card? NVidia? download matching kernel source (to what ever kernel you are booting) and the respective NVidia *.run installer from NVidia to update the video to match the updated kernel might want the open GL files etc I found out the Video card is an NVidia Riva 128. This video card does not need special Nvidia drivers or kernel modules, and should be supported by the default nv_drv driver for X. Since I don't recall fussing with Nvidia drivers where I did the 9.2 install, this makes sense. Are there other things I could be looking for that might cause this kind of freeze? Thanks again! Mark this card sure shoulda had the NVidia Closed source drivers, perhaps you had a powerpack in 9.x that had the drivers included, and I promise, with this weak (as in not much memory, in relation to what cards today have) and old of a video card, if you want open GL games to run at a usable speed at all, you are gonna want to mess around and get the propriety drivers from NVidia. just go to NVidia's website and download the *.run file and download the kernel source for your default kernel from a Mandrake mirror. follow the instruction, and I bet you see a load of difference in open GL games. it is possible you have some services running that are eating your system memory too, so you might want to run 'top' from a text term, adn see if you have something chewing your CPU cycles, or eating memory space. but that will not make as much a diff as getting the closed source drivers for your video card. [newbie] MySQL 4.1 doesn't start in 9.2, 10.0 and 10.1
Hi: I've worked with MySQL 4.1 since the alpha release (4.1.0). I always download the latest rpms from mysql.com and install them with rpm. Until version 4.1.4 every thing was just fine. However, when I tried to install 4.1.5 rpms in my fully updated Mandrake 10.0, I got an error telling me that mysql didn't have permissions to access /root/tmp. MySQL was installed but couldn't be started. Humm, something wrong with this rpms. I post a message in the mysql list and they told me to give, temporarily, 777 access to /root/tmp to start the service, which I did. The service started but I couldn't work with the database after settings /root/tmp permissions back to the original ones (700). I went back to install 4.1.4, which I had working before, and I got the same error. My conclusion was that something was wrong with my box. I modified the mysql init script in /etc/init.d to start mysql as user root and the database started working nicely. After that I installed 4.1.5 which is now working without problem. However, running mysql as root is not considered a good security practice. Then, one of my coworker, who uses Mandrake 9.2, told me that he was facing the same problem with 4.1.5. After modifying mysql init script as I did the data base started to work. Then I decided to go to a different computer and installed 10.1 CE. The same problem with mysql. Again, modifying mysql init script solved the situation. Decided to go deeper into it, I installed mysql in a box running Debian 3.0r2 using the generic Linux installer. No problem whatsoever. Then I tried installing mysql in 10.0 using the same binary and I got the same problem. BTW, Debian has no /root/tmp at all. At this point, I believe that there is something in Mandrake causing the problem but I have no idea where to start looking at. Can I just remove /root/tmp and try to start mysql again? Has anybody in this list tried to install MySQL 4.1.4 or 4.1.5 in 9.2 or 10 fully updated or in 10.1 CE without update? Can some body give me a hint about where the problem might be? Yes. Follow the instructions on the Nvidia site to install it. You will need to have the gcc compiler installed in order to run it, and you must be in a text console at the time. To get to a text console hit Ctl+Alt+F1 log in as root and then enter ' init 3' After it is installed you must change the driver from 'nv' to 'nvidia' The 'Load glx' line can normally be left as it is. Only change it to 'Load /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so' if you still have problems. I find it convenient to use the text based file manager 'mc' to do the editing. To install it 'urpmi mc' and then enter 'mc' to start it up. derek -- www.jennings.homelinux.net http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Onboard Microphone Support for NVIDIA nForce chipset
Hi, I'm running Mandrake 10.0 on an ASUS Mobo (A7N8X-X). I've got about everything working hardware-wise except the microphone. By far, this is the most seemless Linux or BSD installation on this computer. The chipset is NVIDIA nForce 400 (northbridge) and nForce MCP (southbridge). I had downloaded the package from NVIDIA for Linux drivers and installed that, however that created more problems then it solved. The microphone got some heinous output (nothing more then a hiss now and again) but the (onboard) soundcard wasn't working across the few applications I require sound on (xmms, for instance). Currently the sound card is using the snd-intel8x0 driver as reported by the Hardware Browser under Mandrake's Control Center. This driver does fine except the microphone is a lost cause. Does anyone have pointers or solved this problem with nForce onboard mics? TIA, Robert [EMAIL PROTECTED] Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Re: Dual Boot Dual HDD
I'm on my work PC, and hence don't have access to Linux for confirmation of this, but I think there's a way to solve your problem in Mandrake Control Center. There should be a Boot category, or something similar, that you can click on in MCC. Under this you should find an icon labeled Boot Loader. Click on this to make configuration changes to LILO or GRUB. I *think* one of the changes you can make is which mount point each OS choice in the list boots. This is probably what you want to change to fix this particular problem. Disclaimer: I'm not a guru, just a Windows power user trying my hand at something new. After upgrading to 10.0, selecting the windows option produces a black screen with a blinking cursor. However, if I go to BIOS and tell it to boot off of the Windows drive first, Windows boots fine and appears to be undisturbed. I believe he tried switched to grub and got the same result. Is there any way to make lilo or grub boot Windows again? It's on a second drive all by itself. Mark Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? After installing Mandrake 10.0 I noticed that Konqueror was extremely slow in resolving hosts. Once a host was found the Konqueror was at maximum speed. It took me some time to figure out what the problem was, but found a solution here : http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=2135 == There seems to be alot of this going on lately. The consensus seems to be that ipv6 is causing it. If you want to disable ipv6 you just add the following line to either /etc/modules.conf for 2.4 kernel or /etc/modprobe.conf for 2.6 kernel. alias net-pf-10 off == This solution works for me. -- John Zoetebier Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
