Ooops. Yes, I am. I didn't realise Thac had compiled them against 3.3
 rather than 3.2.

Thac makes the SRPMS available if you know how to use those, at
 http://rpm.nyvalls.se/10.1/SRPMS/, otherwise I'll have a hunt around for a
3.2 RPM set when I get home from work tonight.

 John.

Sorry, haven't been able to find any RPM's for KDE3.2 that I can vouch for,
there were some on MandrakeClub, but apparently there were 'issues' with them
and they were withdrawn, although they seem to still be on some of the
mirrors.

Digikam has just released v0.7.1, which among the bug fixes, includes a new
backend for USB Mass Storage cameras which supposedly works better than the
old GPhoto2 one, and a new startup option to automatically open with the
Camera Download window if the camera is already plugged in, which could be
handy for autostart.

So for now, it looks like either rebuilding SRPMS or compiling from
scratch :-(

John.

Packet sniffer. If you are running an Intrusion Detection System like

Sounds to me like you have simply overwritten the MBR bootloader with LILO
from Mandrake which did not detect the Win installation and create a LILO
boot option for it. You should be able to go into /etc/lilo.conf and create
an option for Windows like this:

other=/dev/hda2
label=windows
table=/dev/hda

Run lilo and then you should get the option to boot into Windows on next boot.

Re: [newbie] spam

2005-01-04 Thread jdow
From: Martin Hardie [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 Hi All

I have been getting a load of mail with docs attached such as:

 xx.pif

It is prompting me to consider some spam filter like spamassassin but i
have
 no idea where to start

 any suggestions?

Martin, for that kind of spam you need to consider a compound approach.
I'm happy with a simple postfix-procmail-nk-vir-SpamAssassin path.
Most want more AV protection and use ClamAV instead. I made the mistake
of learning at least some of the procmail syntax so that's easier for me
than setting Amavis and ClamAV with SpamAssassin.

Some things to remember.

1) SpamAssassin is not a filter. It is a spam scoring tool and annotating
tool. You use something following SpamAssassin to dispatch the spam to
/dev/null, a special spam folder, or a combination of those tricks.

2) ClamAV and nk-vir are at different ends of a spectrum of virus diverter
engines. I don't know ClamAV very well. But nk-vir diverts spam to a spam
storage place, on the linux machines. I check it there with the simple
command line utility, mail. It is WAY too dumb to infect me with anything
other than a social engineering virus.

3) None of the above tools works without some form of wrapper and dispatch
engine, procmail, milters, Amavis, or the like. Budget a day or so to get
it working. (It is worth it. Once it's working your life becomes ever so
much easier.)

4) All of the above feature false positives. Given that Murphy was an
optimist there will be false positives that include your job offer from
Google or something else equally critical to your future. Budget a little
time, 10-15 minutes at the outside, to scan at least the titles of the
spams and viruses to make sure nothing critical got into your dumpster.

5) With SpamAssassin there is a phenomenon called add on rule sets. There
are many publicly available rule sets. IMAO the best is at the SARE,
SpamAssassin Rules Emporium. Visit it. Install the rule sets. Watch the
spam tagging accuracy climb dramatically.

6) With SpamAssassin you MUST train the Bayes filter on YOUR mail mix.
Collect at least 200 (1000 preferred) each of spams and hams that you
have personally vetted. Feed them to SpamAssassin's salearn tool.
Bayes will kick in nicely.

7) Personal prejudices re SA: Turn off automatic Bayes training and
automatic whitelisting, at least until Bayes is well trained and you
have achieved high accuracy spam filtering. I've watched many newbies
experience munged Bayes databases and whitelists (which are miss named
anyway) due to false training via the automatic training features on
newly installed SpamAssassins. The SpamAssassin WIKI is a help. Sadly
it could all be better documented. (If you actually LIKE writing
documentation and fighting spam the SA developers would welcome you with
open arms! And if you know someone who wants to employ a perl expert
who happens to like fighting spam, Duncan, the chief SA developer, needs
some summer employment. ANYTHING that we all can do to support this team
is worthwhile.)

8) If you experience difficulties the SpamAssassin users mailing list
at Apache.org is well worth your time and effort.

{^_^} Joanne

Ok, on the advice of several people from this list, I downloaded the 10.1
ISO files, and burned them to CD. Initially the installation seemed to be
working fine, until I reached the end of Partitioning step. I set up the
partitioning, and selected next. I then received an
Internal Error: no kernal available.
MDK::Common::Various::internal_error() called from
/usr/bin/perl-install/pkgs.pm197
pkgs::bestKernelPackage() called from
/usr/bin/perl-install/install_any.pm:610
and so on.
Any thoughts on what might have caused this?

I had a problem with the modem. I have a D-Link external modem, which
used to work fine on 10.0. I decided to install 10.1 yesterday and I
started a Hard Disk install. Everything went fine. All the packages and
all got installed correctly, just that it didn't allow me to configure
the internet connection after the installation. I selected Modem
connection. The installation detected the modem properly. I clicked
next and it gave a similar perl error.

I then finished the installation, rebooted the pc in runlevel 3. I
logged in as a user and hit startx. The KDE splash showed up. But then
suddenly the Welcome window popped up. This is the window that pops up
when KDE starts. Though, at that moment, all I could see in that window
was the check box at the bottom that says Show this windows when KDE
starts or something and the close button. Not to mention, I couldn't
click either. The splash screen meanwhile, was stuck on the 2nd
thing ermmm, I don't remember what it is! But anyways. So I killed X
and hit startx again. This time, KDE started properly, but I didn't get
the First time wizard. Now in KDE, things work fine, but I can't
restore windows once I maximize them. Anyways that doesn't matter.

The problem is with the internet connection. I started KPPP and manually
configured the modem and the rest of the settings. KPPP connected fine,
but I'm unable to send or receive any data on the line. No browser
works. Gaim, Kopete... neither manages to connect to the internet and
urpmi can't find the servers either. The modem works fine in Windows XP
and so it did in Mandrake 10.0.

I've downloaded the ISOs for 10.1 from the internet and verified the
MD5SUM. I extracted all the files from the ISOs to a folder and
installed from the HDD. I booted off the first CD. Any idea about what's
wrong?

Thank you.

Hello again, Miark. Never mind the Euro-symbol. The fact that you
can see those special (Scandinavian) characters indicate you have
iso-8859-1 installed. If you absolutely want to see (Euro), you
must have iso-8859-15 or UTF8 / UTF16.

Everything Euro is crap, anyway.

[newbie] Bandwidth limiting...

2005-01-04 Thread Mrugesh Karnik
Hi,
I have LAN n/w here. The internet connection comes off a computer
running Mandrake 10. The connection is via PPPoE on eth0. eth1 connects
to the rest of the clients (10 of them) running Windows 98 (wish i could
burn them down) via a switch. So there's the whole setup of the
network. I give internet access to these pcs via ipkungfu.

Now, is there any way via which I can limit the bandwidth used by each
pc? I have a 256kbps connection and i'd like to limit the individual
bandwidth for each client to say, something like 20kbps. Is it possible?
If yes, how? What software and where do I get it? Any documentation?

Thank you.

htb.init (http://sourceforge.net/projects/htbinit)
It's a little script that generates syntax for tc from configuration file.
I'm using it on my router([EMAIL PROTECTED]) with 3 subnets works good for me.

Check out some other Arabic written web sites. I just took a look at
http://www.ahram.org.eg/ and the code uses

meta http-equiv='content-type' content='text/html; charset=windows-1256'
The web page and font look good both in Linux and Mac OS X. I don't
have a Windows machine to test this though.

Sounds to me like you have simply overwritten the MBR bootloader with LILO

create an option for Windows like this:

 other=/dev/hda2
 label=windows
 table=/dev/hda

Run lilo and then you should get the option to boot into Windows on next
 boot.

Actually that seems to be exactly what I've done, but it still has the /boot
partition (former C:) as the active primary partition, according to my
partition table. Linux doesn't care, but Windows runs into the blinking
cursor on a black screen problem when I try to choose it from Lilo.

Is there (or rather, what is) a way to set the active 'bit' on your primary
partition? That might save me the entire reinstall, which would be nice...

[newbie] Kmail question

2005-01-04 Thread Chris
I asked this in the kdepim-users list but no reply yet, possibly someone here
can assist me, below is what I sent:

When forwarding a message either in-line or as an attachment, the full headers
are sometimes shown and sometimes not, most times not.  Since I mostly use
this to forward phishing msgs to certain addresses, its important that the
full headers are shown.  I've gone through the composer settings for Kmail
and haven't been able to get this to work yet.  If I remember correctly in
the previous version I was running this wasn't a problem as the full headers
were always shown in the attachment.

Can someone enlighten me on what changes I need to make to get this to work
correctly.

Thanks

Yes. If you boot from the CD, you should be able to get to a command line
interface and then run fdisk. You can make partitions active and inactive
there.

However, you can only have one active primary partition. If, during the
original disk partitioning, you created two primary partitions and two
logical drives, C and D, if you make D active, then C will become inactive
and Windows may reissue the drive letters which will make the D logical drive
the C logical drive and mess up all your drive letters from the original
install.

If this is the case, you are going to have to bite the bullet and remove the
second primary partition, reduce the size of the primary partition to just
the C drive size and then create an extended partition for the D and other
logical drives on the disk. If this doesn't happen, then it doesn't matter
if the C logical drive is hidden or not since it will be a Linux drive and
not really readable under Win2k anyway.

I don't have an answer for your question, but I noticed something else strange
about e-mail forwarding in the kmail in 10.1. In the past, if you forwarded
a message with an attachment, the attachment would be part of the forwarded
message, not so in 10.1. Maybe forwarding is completely broken in 10.1
