I'm running Mandrake 9.1 and wondered what would be the best card. Here is what I'm looking at so far: Promise SuperTrak 100 or 66, 3WARE DiskSwitch AccelerATA 8 port UDMA100 EIDE RAID Card, or the Promise FastTrak 66 or 100. What I would like to know is: which one is best supported under Linux (i.e. in kernel, with drivers, etc.)? which one is the easiest to install? I would like to eventually do RAID level 5 but I will start with RAID 1 and go from there. I have looked on Google to find support and on the respective Web sites but would like to know if anyone has specific experience. Thanks! [newbie] Using other CDs
I purchased the PowerPack Edition from MandrakeStore for 9.1. I installed a bare bones system thinking I would add only the things I needed later. I added apache and mysql using the control center/add packages and they both are working fine. Now I want to add Webmin but it does not show up in the package list. I found it on CD2 and I know I can copy it and install it using urpmi but I being stubborn and I want to do it my way (guess that's why I'm using linux). How do I go about adding contents of other CDs to the contents of RPMDrake so the packages show up on the list of available packages? I have googled and checked out the 9.1 documentation and if it's there I've missed it. Your help is appreciated. Carter Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? RE: [newbie] Autostart for VNC
Thanks again Derek ... -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Derek Jennings Sent: Thursday, November 21, 2002 9:13 AM To: H. Carter Harris; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] Autostart for VNC I'm replying on list as this may be of interest to others. The way Mandrake starts up services is this. In the /etc/rc.d/init.d folder are startup/shutdown scripts for each service available. These scripts are never executed, but get copied into the folders /etc/rc.d/rc0.5 , rc1.d , rc3.d, rc4.d , rc5.d , and rc6.d These folders correspond to the six different run levels. The ones that most interest us are rc.5 for normal desktop and rc.6 for shutdown. When you use the Mandrake Control Centre Services GUI, or the 'service' command from the command line. What you are doing is causing a script to be copied/deleted to /etc/rc.d/rc.5 (and rc.6) However the name of the script is changed during the copy. So taking vncserver as an example. When it is enabled the script is copied to /etc/rc.d/rc.5/S91vncserver , and the same script is copied to /etc/rc.d/rc6.d/K35vncserver. The 'S' means 'start', and the 'K' means 'Kill', the number dictates the sequence relative to other services. So this means in run level 5 vncserver is started with a 'sequence number' of 91, and when you shutdown (runlevel 6) it is stopped. When you disable the vncserver service, the script is deleted from rc5.d and rc6.d and so vncserver never starts. Hope that throws some light on how services work. This is a bit different I believe from the way RedHat does it Derek On Thursday 21 Nov 2002 2:52 am, you wrote: You were right on target Derek. I went by the office this afternoon and went into control center and looked at the the processes that were checked to start on boot and you were exactly right ... vncserver was not checked. I checked it and rebooted and viola a session came up during the boot. I hope you don't mind some followup. Do the lines in /etc/sysconfig/vncservers have to be different users? I have them the same and only one server came up and it came up on the second display. When I execute the processes from the command line I use the same user to bring up several sessions and I assumed that it would work the same during boot. I know Mandrake has its own way of doing things and I'm trying to think like the duck. So far most things work very well if you can find them. I assume that when I checked that box that a text file somewhere got updated. Which one was it? My guess would be that it is one of the init or rc files. RE: [newbie] Autostart for VNC
Not cooking yet but at least a slow poaching. I looked in the /etc/rc.d/rc5.d directory and found a pointer file (K35vncserver@) pointing to ../init.d/vncservers. I assume that the rc5 refers to a boot-level 5 maybe? This looked sorta promising so I checked out ../init.d/vncservers and inside that bash script are a couple of lines that look promising: VNCSERVERS= [ -f /etc/sysconfig/vncservers] . /etc/sysconfig/vncservers I checked my bash reference but I couldn't find anything that could tell me exactly what those two lines ought to do. /etc/sysconfig/vncservers is where I put my two commands that I hoped would automatically start the vncservers. What do those two lines do ... and talk slow, I live in the South. You can't just say it's pictures of people naked. For example, you have these primitive African tribes that exist by chasing the wildebeest on foot, and they have to go around largely naked, because, as the old tribal saying goes: N'wam k'honi soit qui mali, which means, If you think you can catch a wildebeest in this climate and wear clothes at the same time, then I have some beach front property in the desert region of Northern Mali that you may be interested in. So it's not considered pornographic when National Geographic publishes color photographs of these people hunting the wildebeest naked, or pounding one rock onto another rock for some primitive reason naked, or whatever. But if National Geographic were to publish an article entitled The Girls of the California Junior College System Hunt the Wildebeest Naked, some people would call it pornography. But others would not. And still others, such as the Spectacularly Rev. Jerry Falwell, would get upset about seeing the wildebeest naked. -- Dave Barry, Pornography Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[newbie] Permissions Problems?
I'm having a couple of problems that I believe are permissions related. During my ML 8.2 install, Apache was also installed with all the defaults. I want to operate the server on a private IP address so I modified the NAT in my router to send all traffic on port 80 to the private IP. When I connect to the public IP on port 80, bingo I see the default web page for the Apache server on my domain. Hey, I'm on a roll! So now I want to setup a test web page to get virtual domains working. I have an extra domain lying around so I change my DNS servers to point that domain to the linux box. On the linux box I setup a dummy page to say something stupid like Hello World. In the /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf file I added the following lines: NameVirtualHost 192.168.1.103 VirtualHost 192.168.1.103 ServerName domainname.com DocumentRoot /var/www/domainname.com ServerAlias linuxserver /VirtualHost domainname.com is the actual domain name in the real file and linuxserver is the name of the linux box. After that file was changed, I stopped Apache and restarted it using webmin. I would like to tell you that I'm smart and I figured those lines out all by myself but I didn't; I copied them from one of the tutorials I have been reading (smile). Under the /var/www/domainname.com directory In /var/www/domainname.com/conf I created a file named httpd.conf where I put the following lines: User apache Group apache ServerName domainname.com DocumentRoot /var/www/domainname.com/htdocs When I try to go to this webpage I get the following error: Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server. Apache-AdvancedExtranetServer/1.3.23 Server at www.domainname.com Port 80 Now if I was a gambling man (and I may now be since my state passed a lottery yesterday), I would guess that the OS doesn't want to give Apache access to the root folder. Have I done this correctly? And what should I do to get Apache to server up this page? The second problem I'm having is with editors. When I wanted to edit the httpd.conf file I had to execute shell, su, copy the file to my home directory, open Kate, edit the file and save it, go back to shell, and copy the file back to the correct place. I have read the warnings about not logging on as root and I am trying to abide by those warnings but I get the feeling that I'm not doing something right. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance ... [newbie] VNC Questions ...
I have been trying to get VNC functionality on a new, textbook install of ML 8.2. I posted here before and with the wisdom of the group, I was successful with TightVNC. However, to earn the title newbie I did make some mistakes during the install. First, I installed it while while in the shell with root privledges. I would like to change that so it is under another account. Secondly, I would like to have this install in the software manager. Questions: Are there .cf files I can edit to change the user for VNC? Where are they or how can I find them? Should I setup a user account just for VNC logins? These questions naturally bring up more. When I login as root, I get a red screen with a calendar-type icon and another icon in the upper right hand corner of the screen and nothing else. If I right click on the screen I get a popup menu similar to the K button in the KDE Panel. There is no panel in the red screen. I think root is starting with an x-window that is not KDE. So far I have seen 3 different x-window environments on this system: kde, the red one, and one that has a Linux button when the system is not shut down properly. I would like to hear a little explaination on this if anyone has time. To everyone who pointed me in the right direction: Thanks. And thanks to anyone who takes the time for this little epistle too!
