Re: [newbie] 6.1 Download/Install
I havent a clue. I am having a hell of a time trying to get Linux to work. I guess Mandrake 6.1 does not support the ATI Rage Fury 128 videocard. This is driving me nuts. I am almost tired of it. I look into my Linux book, but I can understand what to do. I know someone out there has got Mandrake to work with the Rage Fury card.PLEASE HELP ME. I am starting to loose hope. I know it will work.HELP. TIA, Tom Sean Pritchard wrote: I Here you Caymen, Except for some reason the transfer rates bite, on our local cable network. This drags down the cable access big time. Any hints on how to get the ISP to speed things up, I think they have a 256K Pipe? Regards,\ Sean Caymen wrote: I am downloading it right now. I found itNow what do I do with it? Tom Sean Pritchard wrote: Tom: There is a separate Xserver for that vid-card, under "apps" Directory somewhere in the tree for download of 6.1. [newbie] New Problem
Well, I got Linux to load just fine. I have tried to install it MANY different ways and everything wants to boot until it wants to mount (Or whatever it is called) my ethernet card. then it sits there then it fails. After everything is done it asks for my login name and password. I type it in and then it gives me something like you are suposed to type in your server. I try everything I can think of. NOTHING I hie the "ESC" key twice and it list everything. i try most of them till I get pissed off and reformat HDD and startover. Same crap 8 times in a row. Thank goodness, I still have Win98 on my system...PLEASE HELP ME. I am going to bed now (Before I start thinking of suicideJ/K but you get my point) Maybe the Linux Penguin will fix it while I am sleepingMAYBE? Tom
Re: [newbie] New Problem
I would assume if I couldnt figure out my (Localname.localserver) password or loging name, I couldnt continue. That is why I posed the question. I reinstalled Linux again, but removed anything that pertains to networking, internet, email, and other stuff like that. I get a new error at boot up. It is as follows: Freeing unused Kernel memory: 48K freed Warning:Unable to open an initial console Kernel Panic: No init found. Try passing init=option to kernel It then just sits there. Is this serious or do I just neet to change something. If it isnt one thing...it is another. The first computer I installed Linux on, went it without a hitch. This one is driving me nuts. And in any of those cases, what does it say? Since you didn't say otherwise, I assume it didn't reject your login; if that's the case, you could continue from that point to fix anything that needed fixing without reformating the drive once, let alone 8 times. -- Dan Brown, KE6MKS, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Meddle not in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.
[newbie] Hopefully Last problem.
I finally got Linux to load using boot magic (had to make it easy for sis to start Win98 if she needs to print some homework) Well, when I used to try to boot Linux using a floppy, I got an error like: Freeing unused Kernel memory: 48K freed Warning:Unable to open an initial console Kernel Panic: No init found. Try passing init=option to kernel Now if I start it through Boot Magic everything loads until I get to the Penguin Screen (I assume it is the start screen) I identifies itself saying: Linux Version 2.2.9-27MDK Compiled #1 Man Jun 14 16:44"05 CEST 1999 One 450 MHz AMD K6-3 Processor, 128 MB RAM 897.84 Bogomips Total localhost.localdomain Then, below the penguin it says: Linux Mandrake Release 6.0 (Venus) localhost login I tried my user login name and pass work Linux asks when loading and type in my password I get: [caymen@localhost]$ I try typing in "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" and hit enter...Nothing. If I dont first type in my user name for Linux (The one you make when installing) and just type in my ISP email address/username and password, it will keep asking the same question: localhost login If I type in my user name for Linux, I get" [caymen@localhost]$ Please help me. I am so close, yet so far away. TIA Tom
Re: [newbie] iso
I use Verbatims and have only had minimal problems with them. I had some Memorex and tried to make a CD 3 times, all three had errors. Used a Verbatim and it worked great, tried it again with a memorex CD-R and it had errors. I have a Ricoh MP6201s CD-RW. I am extremely happy with the Verbatims and Sam's Club has them for like $1.25 a CD with jewl case. I get mine in 20 packs. So far I think I have burnt clost to 200 CD's. Tom Steve Philp wrote: PaulHoy wrote: John, I burned it with a Maxell cd, twice. When I tried a Kodak CD, it worked fine. I just picked up a CD-RW burner yesterday, so I'm slowly learning about these things... Is there that much of a difference between vendors? I bought a 16-pack of Maxell CD-Rs and burned my first last night (a "customized" 6.0 disk with all the updates, but a few problems :). Everything worked fine, so I'm happy. [newbie] Here goes.
I am getting ready to install Linux on my PC. Last time I installed Linux it was on a PC I was putting together a PC for a friend. I tried to install linux usisg the CD to boot up, but it didnt. I had to use me Win98 startup disk to load drivers for the CD-ROM. I forget the command to load Linux. Anybody know what it is? I forget where I found it and where I wrote it down. Another question. How do I install a program in Linux. I have TRIED to read a book, but I cant learn that way. I will need to get files for my ISP (Roadrunner) and I need to know how to install it so I can get it to work. I know this is something I should know.but I dont. I am waiting for your responce before I start the install. Thank you for your help. Tom Who cant wait to be a Linux user.
Re: [newbie] Evil Empire
I dont know about you guys, but using Netscape 4.61 and using MS IE5 I would take Netscape any day of the week. I always get invalad JavaScript errors on it, and the Ffunny thing is that Netscape and Sun did JavaScript. MS didnt. That tells me, IE is an inferior browser. it is telling you that it is wrong because its daddy...Bill Gates didnt write it? Come on. I used them both and Netscape is faster, nicer, and easier to operate and browse. I have a 500k Cable modem and the web browsing on Netscape is twice as fast then IE is. I just thought I woule put my 2 cents in. Until an attachment (aka e-mail virus) or some Active-X control on a website destroys the content of your harddisk, maybe. Re: [newbie] Linux drive disappeared!
It is just Microsofts way of saying that WINDOWS is the ONLY OS to have. Tom Ken Wilson wrote: Windows will not recognize your Linux partitions. Also, your drive designation in Windows is not arbitrary. If you remove a drive it once had by partitioning it for another file system it will just redesignate the drives that are left, keeping them in alphabetic sequence. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of brandon Sent: Monday, August 16, 1999 6:17 PM To: mandrake-linux support Subject: [newbie] Linux drive disappeared! I am running Linux and Windows 98 on the same computer but on different hard drives. After setting aside a 2.1 Gb drive ( drive D:\ ) for the Linux OS, I installed Linux successfully. But when I go into windows, it seems to not recognize the drive where I am storing the Linux OS. What was drive E now becomes drive D. And now, when I open My Computer, both the E: drive and F: drives have the cd-rom icon. Originally, my F: drive is my CD-ROM drive. How do I make Windows recognize the Linux drive? Or is there another way to solve this problem?? thanks, Brandon
