Io l'ho messa sul portatile. A parte il bug di kde che fa scomparire le

Re: [newbie] ADSL Setup with Mandrake 8.1

2002-02-15 Thread Claudio Mio

Hi,

Im sure it is because I screwed something up on the install that mine is not
setup correctly.
However I did not want to retry it as installing Mandrake 8.1 on a P90 is a
little painful. I had a few crashes as well.

Because of the spec of my machine I did a fairly small install. Just enough
for the firewalling. Then later rpm'd the NDS server as well.

Thanks for the info on the network scripts. Ill look into those files when I
get home.

Re your question. I dont think it will be a problem. In route you can define
routes to addresses which dont exist and they will kick in once they are
available. So the fact that ppp0 drops from time to time should not matter.
In fact mine has dropped once already without any problem (it re-connected
automatically and continued to work).

Claude.

 Hi,

I've got the same modem as you but the routing is set up correctly.
I used drakconf to configure my setup.
I see in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts that ifup sets the default route
and ifup-ppp deletes any existing route prior to that. It's quite
 complicated.
I'm also planning of setting up a fw using fwbuilder as a front-end. Do
you think it is possible to define the external interface in our case
since the address we have is not fixed and the interface, ppp0,
 dissappears from time to time.
I haven't looked into it I must admit but if you have any experience...

 Guy.

[newbie] ADSL Setup with Mandrake 8.1

2002-02-14 Thread Claudio Mio

First of all can I say its really good that 8,1 has added support for the
Alcatel SpeedTouch modem. This has simplified things alot for me!

Now onto my problem

Ive installed a very small setup of Mandrake 8.1 with firewall support only.
The intention is to run it as a firewall/Name Server/Proxy Server/Web Server
on my small network at home. The ADSL modem I have setup is the Alcatel
SpeedTouch USB.

This seems to work however my routing tables dont seem to be setup
correctly.

When my machine starts it auto connects (everthing looks fine in
/var/log/messages). However I cant ping my ISPs DNS server.
When I run route to see the routes setup it hangs until I ctrl-break.
If I then add a route to my DNS server I then get all these additional
entries in my routing table.
If I then add a default route via the device ppp0 everything seems to work
from my linux box.

Ideally I would like this to happen automatically on startup of the box.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Claudio

[newbie] Another related question - iptables

2002-02-14 Thread Claudio Mio

I have setup firewall rules on my linux box.

The iptables script I have used is:

#!/bin/sh
iptables -F
iptables -P INPUT DROP
iptables -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -s 192.168.0.2/24 -i ppp0 -j DROP
iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p icmp -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p udp --dport netbios-ns -j DROP
iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p udp --dport netbios-dgm -j DROP
iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p udp --dport bootps -j DROP
iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p udp -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
#iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport auth -j REJECT --reject-with tcp-reset
iptables -A INPUT -i ppp0 -p tcp -j REJECT
iptables -A INPUT -i ppp0 -p udp -j DROP
iptables -A INPUT -j LOG --log-level warning --log-prefix fw:

# MASQUERADING
iptables -t nat -P POSTROUTING DROP
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o ppp0 -j MASQUERADE

My problem is that on my other machine on my small network I have setup a
default rote to the linux box. The linux box has an ip 192.168.0.1 my other
box has an ip 192.168.0.2.

Now I can quite happily ping the linux box. However If I try to ping a box
on the internet (my ISPs DNS server - this works from my linux box) I get
'Network unreachable'.

So as a test I added the following iptables rule on my linux box:
iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -j LOG

This results in all my pings to 192.168.0.1 being logged but not the ones to
the DNS server.

Any ideas would be much appreciated

Thanks
Claude

route add default ppp0

 Greetings everyone,

I am brand new to the world of Linux. I just happened
to be at Walmart at 11:00 at night (is there any other
good time to be at Walmart? lol), and came across the
last box of LM 7.2 Complete. It looked really cool on
the bac of the box, so I thought, "What the heck?"

Welkom to the world of linux

I'm glad I decided to get it. KDE is very cool, and
most of the applications are more stable than Windows
is. I haven't quite worked up the courage to face the
straight text console yet, like I said, I'm brand new
to Linux. I do have some questions though:

 1. Is there a more feature-rich email application
other than Kmail (preferrably something like Eudora?).
Kmail does do almost everything I need it to, but
 just seems so "ho hum."

Balsa is very Eudora-like. It is surely include in your package.
You should surely take a look at the beta of 'Evolution', an
outlook-look-like client for Gnome (I use Gnome instead of KDE).

 2. I can not get KDE upgraded from 2.0 up to 2.1.1.
I've tried every suggestion from every website that I
come across about upgrading the blasted thing, only to
royally screw up KDE to the point where x won't even
start. The console still worked, but since I don't
know enough about it, I had to resort to blasting
 everything and starting all over.

Have you tried the Mandrake Updater? You'll find the upgrades there when
they are stable (you can also download development packages, but I wouldn't
do that ... yet).

 Thanks!

[newbie] what's up ?

I have installed the win98, winserver4 and the linux mandrake7.1,
I install it in advanced option (expert) so that it allows me to create a

mandrake environment when one installs it in basic option but linux don't

[newbie] Problem between Linux WinNtServer4

2001-01-03 Thread Claudio Cardenas

I have installed win98 (2Gb-fat), winserver4 (3Gb-ntfs) and linux (3Gb-ext2)
in that order and in the moment to execute them, the one that has boot
problems is the winserver4, it leaves me an error message that doesn't exist
the file ntosknl.exe or has been damaged and in the moment to see the
partitions with the Partition Magic in win98, the ntfs no longer exists, it
is observed that they have united the winserver and linux in 1 single
partition (type85). What is the type85? and How can I install the 3
operating systems in a correct way?.

[newbie] Script errors during kernel upgrade

2000-07-15 Thread Claudio

Hi,

I am trying to upgrade my 2.2.14 kernel to 2.2.16 but
with problems.

During the process the rpm reports that couln't find
vmlinuz and stops.

The link of vmlinuz and system.map, in /boot, are
broke. These links I correct.

The problem is with the module-info points to old
version and I couldn't find the its new version.

How can I generate or get this new version of
module-info?

Thanks,
Claudio H.

A lot depends on what distro you are using and
 the kernel.
Mandrrake 7.0 only supports USB keyboards and
 mice whereas
7.1 supports many more USB devices including Zip
 drives, modems, and others.

Does Linux recognize the USB ports at all? Is
there a way to use a USB

Re: [newbie] Graphics Card Question

2000-07-01 Thread Claudio Henrique de Castro

Hi,

I have a machine similar to yours.

Take a look at Intel site (www.intel.com). There you
will find new win98 drivers and Linux drivers for you
get 1024 X 12?? (I forgot the exact resolution).

Good look,
Claudio H.

 with
it. I have looked on some news groups and found
others with the same problem. I can not seem to get
 a
better resolution that 640 x 800! It works but that
is just a little too big for me. Any suggestions?

If it matter - here is the run down on the rest of
 my
 system:

 Dell Deminsion L500C
 Celeron 500 mhz
 64 mb ram
 6 gig HD - linux has a 1.5 gig/ windows 98 has the
 rest.
The video card is built into the mother board...

Any help you could send this newbies way would much
 be
 appreciated.
