[newbie] urpmi command question

2004-03-17 Thread Florian Ahlers
Hi everybody:
Which command option do I have to use to get more information on a package
using urpmi?
For example: urpmi XX octave to get detailed information on the octave
package like version or the information shown within rpmdrake.

thanks in advance

Florian

I was wondering if anybody on the list uses this chipset (or something

 display at 1024x768 resolution?

Hi Job:
I do have the 855GM and it's working fine for me. Sorry, I can't tell you
what went wrong for you but it works perfekt for me since installation of
mdk10. (didn't have to change anything).

Hi sorry for late reply.
To add a module into a kernel either type modprobe usb-storage
Or just add the module to the file /etc/modules in a new line only the name
of the module so it will be loaded at bootup
here is my /etc/modules file it might look different than mandrakes but it
should be ok to just add the correct line .

-snip-

# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file should contain the names of kernel modules that are
# to be loaded at boot time, one per line. Comments begin with

apm power_off=1
i2c-viapro

usb-storage

Actually there seems to be difference inbetween debian and mandrake here
cause for me the module loads automatically at bootup even without having it
in /etc/modules.
The device should be build afaik automatically if you load the module at
bootup.
Tell me if you have no luck so ill search the docs that i used to get it to
work. On google you find every infos you need i just dont remember with what
search pattern i looked for it.

After that you need to add a line to your etc fstab here a snip of mine (your

/dev/sda1 /mnt/flash vfatdefaults,user,noauto 0 0

This should all work if you have the hotplug stuff and the usb-utils (or
whatever they are called in mandrake) installed.
A good thing is to install the package usbviev so you can see first if its
recognized cause then it should be loaded too by hotplug

Note :
You need a kernel with usb-storage enabled.
As i sayd i didnt try this on my mandrake machine its the debian one so it
might be a different procedure.

Okay, then it didn't go. I downloaded the source and rebuilt it and then
installed it and the GLX. Everything went in okay this time. I didn't get
 the
 can't find module error.

I went to Mandrake User and followed the instructions there on how to

 pick
a resolution and then restart X. I did that but nothing changed. Then I
 read
on Nvidia's site that I should edit the X86Config-4 file, chaning the
 driver
from nv to nvidia, then add glx to the modules secition. I tried
both ways and still did not see the NVidia splash screen.

I'm sorta' lost now. The driver installed without error. I've tried both

Re: [newbie] Mandrake 8.1 and webcam

2001-12-04 Thread Florian Struck

Well i recently bought a Quickcam 3000 PRO from logitech without knowing
there support behaviour =/ it is supported starting at kernel 2.4.13 .
Since it has Phillips ingredients. Phillips webcams are supported (allmost
all AFAIK ) they use the kernel module pwc (so does my logitech ) but dont
buy the logitech its a good cam but you will have to wait or hack better
support for it . Example: i get the camera working fine with a small picture
(nokia-display-size on a 1280x1024 screen res) that is because you need to
uncompress the signal to get the resolution higher (it SHOULD support 480x600)
but to uncompress you need to compile your own kernel with the module pwcx
wich you get at http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/ (a recommendable site )
Recommendable is to use a analog camera and a tv grabbercard (bttv) but
ofcourse those are more expensive.
Cheers

directory they were in (kde was not running at the time) and away it went.

When I returned to kde I found it to be really slow. Kmail isn't so bad,
and non webbrowsing konqueror is ok, but kdevelop and web browsing
konqueror are incredibly slow. Kdevelop takes a good 5 minutes to shut
down, and about a minute to do anything (say switch to a different
document). Generally speaking any k apps are slower than they used to be.

I'll be reinstalling Mandrake 8.1 tonight, as that's the only way I know of
to go back to 2.2.1 and be sure of no problems. But if anyone has any
 ideas, I'm all ears.

Fortunately I backed up everything before attempting 2.2.2.

[newbie] pwcx module kernel = wow strong tobacco (atleast for me =))

2001-11-29 Thread Florian Struck

Howdy i have a little (maybe stupid question) =)
Have a look at this :

Installation of this module is very simple; copy the pwcx-i386.o module to
/lib/modules/usb/pwcx.o, and run 'depmod -a' once. After this, it should be
possible to load the module on ANY kernel where the pwc.o module has been
built or loaded (well, provided it's running in an Intel processor, of
course).

(got that from http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam )

Those are instructions to add a module for better webcam (quickcam 3000 PRO)
support im using kernel 2.4.13.xx and the module pwc is loaded nicely but i
cant change the size of the picture i have to unkompress it with this new
module anway thts not so important .
My problem is that i dont know much about kernels =)
Fact is that the is not such a dir ( /lib/modules/usb ) so where do i copy
this mod?
The modules in my kernel (in the dir called
/lib/modules/2.4.13-11mdk/kernel/drivers/usb ) are all .o.gz files and
copying it there didnt work.

PLEASE ILLUMINATE ME!!!

Hi i have just succesfully installed a usb webcam (qiuckcam 3000)
using the new 2.4.13 kernel anyhow this camera has an inbuild micro wich is
loaded as module audio .
Now my original soundcard (es1371) and the webcam (audio) both use the module
soundcore with xmms i can configure the oss output plugin and choose to use
either the usb-audio-device (wich ofcourse doesnt work since its only a mic)
and the es1371 device but many more apps (tuxracer ... etc.) dont work with
sound anymore .
Now how can i find out what device (/dev/xxx ) is assigned to which driver
(es1371 or usb-audio) .
reason : I want to use with ALL audio apps the soundcard (es1371) and i want
to use the usb module (audio) only as mic.
any suggestions ?

Re: [newbie] kernel 2.4.13

2001-11-24 Thread Florian Struck

Thanx it worked quite fine the kernel loads nicely with my original settings .
A few problems appeared though not directly related to the kernel .
First the new kernel doesnt seem to accept the nvidia drivers so after
switching the kernel i have to edit XF86config-4 cause the new kernel runs
only the nv driver and not the nvidia driver .
Second is related to my quickcam it has a integrated micro which will make my
sounddevice busy and second is that i have a tvcard wich uses the module
videodev and the camera too so i have to always unload the bttv module and
after that i can load the quickcam module . Is there a way of running them
all at the same time funktionally ?
here my lsmod output: (without the quickcam modules wich will after loading
them attach to videodev audio and usb)

This will install the new kernel, while keeping the old one intact. If you
have problems with 2.4.13, you can still boot into your old kernel. You may
need to edit /etc/lilo.conf (or /boot/grub/menu.lst if you use grub) to
make the new kernel appear in the boot menu.

Also ever since i installed mdk 8.1 (actually it was same with 8.0 too) my

might have something to do with nsplugins .
Ill attach xsessionerrors cause there are a few entrys that i dont quite
understand ... sorry for the big post

Re: [newbie] IRQ`s

2001-11-01 Thread Florian Struck

Thanx for the reply.
I was now trying to do a few things :

First my original setup :

AGP = nvidia
PCI1 = empty
PCI2 = firewire
PCI3 = soundblaster128
PCI4 = ethernet
PCI5 = WinTV
ISA = empty

First i changed the tvcard wich was in the last pci slot (sharing with
nvidia) to PCI slot1 below the AGP slot restarted my box and it was still
sharing with nvidia damn .
Then i took out the firewire card and put the tvcard into its slot (PCI2)
After restarting the system it was not sharing anymore tvcard had irq9 and
nvidia was alone on irq11 ... but it kept crashing the whole system so its
not about the irq .
So i have two questons :
first how can it be that the agpslot shares with 2 different PCI slots and
how can it be that i have 5 slots but i can only use 3 of them if i avoid
sharing the agp`s irq? ( i need atleast 4 of them )
Second question is do you know anything about wintv cards and xawtv why could
it be crashing my entire system it seems to be not nice at all.
Thanx in advance
Florian

FS Hello i have a little problem with my irq`s .
FS Since i have quite a lot of hardware in my box there is some sharing.
Now the FS problem is that my wintv card shares an irq with my GeForce and
since it FS crashes my complete system after running xawtv or zapping as
well as any FS other tv prog its obviously not wise that they share the
irq with the grafix FS device =).

Most probably the irq conflict is causing this, you are right.
Especially the graphics card should stay alone, even though there are
lots of irq management systems (mean the ones in your board and OS).

FS Now i dont know much at all about irq management if someone could tell
me the FS comand to change an irq and which irq is free and available in
my pc FS here is a cat /proc/interrupts :

Unfortunately there is no command that can change irqs, as long as
they asre not pnp etc. But even if they are, I never could get success
in this. Why ? Because IRQ's are managed by boards more strictly in
  later systems.

 FS # cat /proc/interrupts
 FSCPU0
 FS 0: 567487 XT-PIC timer
 FS 1: 3092 XT-PIC keyboard
 FS 2: 0 XT-PIC cascade

IRQ 3 and 4 seems to be not used. These are the serial ports. If
you dont use any of them,or both, shut them off from your bios.

 FS 5: 0 XT-PIC es1371
You are very lucky your sound card uses irq 5 (I could not
manage that) Keep it like this.

 FS 7: 1 XT-PIC parport0
 FS 8: 1 XT-PIC rtc
 FS 10: 4323 XT-PIC usb-uhci, usb-uhci, eth0

If you are not using any usb devices, shut your usb controllers
from your bios. They dont screw things but it would be better.

 FS 11: 238652 XT-PIC bttv, nvidia

I guess your tv card is in slot 1 of your board. Usually in
boards the pci slot 1 and the agp slot share the same irq, so
  change the place of it.

 FS 12: 90182 XT-PIC PS/2 Mouse
 FS 14: 54881 XT-PIC ide0
 FS 15: 7586 XT-PIC ide1

These are all fine. I guess 13 is also being used by something
related to CPU, so dont try to use 13. (most probably cant
  either)

 FS NMI: 0
 FS ERR: 0

FS All devices are listed exept my firewire card which i didnt load yet
but if i FS remember right it would, if loaded, use irq 9 but i might be
 wrong about that.

Actually irq 9 is not as fine as irq 5,10,11 etc. but I did not
 have any troubles using that.

Usually boards assign irqs to pci slots, that is like pci slot 3
can only use irq 9 and the irq of the pci slot 6 (something like
that). You can find info about this in your mobo's manual, though
you dont need to waste your time.

Simply, shut down the systms that you dont use, serial port,
parallel port, usb etc. After all that, try different combinations
of pci slots on your board, after a few tries you will realize how
 to solve your trouble.

  Good Luck
  Onur Kucuk

Re: [newbie] Removing Linux, how do I re-install next OS?

2001-06-13 Thread Florian

If its not a dos drive then you cant make a format c either and the bios
should see your (physikal) drive also if its not dos .try to put the drive
detection to auto if it doesnt work otherwise it sounds like your drive is
gone you can try to put the mandrake cd into the cdromdrive and enter the
setup until you get to diskdrake the partitioning tool there you make one big
fat32 partition and set it as primary then you let diskdrake save the
partitiontable and reboot then you can go on with a dos floppy .
cheers

Im thinking of using it as a router for our company we have a lan with 10 pcs

every 10 minutes i was wondering if Single Network Firewall firewall is an
possibly easy to use alternative?
If i did all the networks stuff by myself i would use a MDK8 version but
since there are people taking care of the networking who dont have experience
with linux i like the idea of boot a cd install boot and hop were up.
Another question is if there are possibillities of putting ssh etc. servers
on the Single Network Firewall?
Do i expect too much ... little?
