[newbie] /dev/ttyS3

2001-10-19 Thread Francois Massonneau

Hello,

I repost this message as I've got no reply, and I need to be sure
about that stuff to solve another problem.

I would like to know whether or not ttyS3 and ttyS03 are the same
thing ?
dmesg | grep tty, gives me :
ttyS00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
ttyS03 at 0x02e8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A
but I don't have a device ttyS03 but ttyS3. Why does it give me 03
instead of 3 ? Thanks. Francois

[newbie] Mozilla spell checker

2001-06-29 Thread Francois Swanepoel

Hi

I have just downloaded Mandrake Freq 20010619 and installed mozilla
0.9.1 from these CD's. (Uninstalled 0.8.x first)
Now the spell checker in message composition is missing.
I messed around with aspell/pspell to try and get spelling to work in
Evolution, so if mozilla uses that the spelling might not work.
If it doesn't use pspell where is the spell checker?

Thanks

  - Kheader : I solved this one by adding a "0" in the kheader file and
  it works now.
  - Supermount : I do not have supermount anymore. How can I do to get
  it back ?
  - The alsa drivers I have installed with my previous kernel, don't
work. Does that mean I have to reinstall them ?
  I'm running Mandrake 7.1
  Thank you. Francois

Whoa which 2.2.18? 2.2.18-1mdk ? and was it the ready made, or
did you compile it, and from mdk source, or vanilla source ... with the
appropriate 7.1 patches ? I believe you can see I'm gettin at there
 can be endless variables here

I downloaded the one I found on kernel.org named
"linux-2.2.18.tar.bz2"
I compiled it, but I do not know about the "appropriate 7.1 patches"
you're speaking about.

  Hi,

  - How do I do to install this new XFree. ?
  - Do I have to uninstall XFree3.3.6 then install 4.02 ?
All your help will be very appreciated, because I 'm really afraid

[newbie] Can't start X server

2000-12-24 Thread Francois Massonneau

Hi,

I use to let my computer to run 24/24, and yesterday when I went to
bed, I left my computer running, (I just turn off my screen as usual).
This morning, I tried to fire up kppp, and I got a message something
like : "I can't create the modem lock file".
Then I loged out from kde, and tried to restart it.

As user "fm" (my login), this is the message I have now each time I
try to launch "startx" ;-(
"authentification failed - cannot start X server.
Perhaps you do not have console ownership".

And as "root", this is the message I have :

Exiting
Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap.

What can I do to make it to work as it did ?

If some of you have implemented such a server, what are the hardware specs

Is it better to go for a uni- or multiprocessor machine?

[newbie] New kernel and error messages

2000-10-13 Thread Francois Massonneau

Hello,

I've just compiled and installed a new kernel. I upgraded from
2.2.15 to 2.2.17 on my Portable PC.

Everything runs fine, except during the boot process where I
have a few error messages.

These are the main ones :

- This new kernel doesn't seem to recognize my Slim SCSI PC Card -
Fast SCSI 1460D (Adaptec). With kernel 2.2.15 during the boot
process, I have a message telling me that it has recognized this
adaptor card (One scsi host detected). With kernel 2.2.17 I have no
message at all.
Is it because I forgot to do something during the kernel
configuration?
To configure the new kernel, I saved in a txt file my 2.2.15 kernel
config, and loaded it when I run the "make xconfig" to create my new
2.2.17 kernel.

- I have the following message too :
"locate usb interface modprobe can't locate module usb-interface"
(This one doesn't appear when I boot on 2.2.15).

- And finally this one :
"starting kheader -- failed"
(It doesn't failed with kernel 2.2.15)

How can I make it run the same way as my old kernel ?
Thanks. Francois

[newbie] How to apply patches

2000-10-11 Thread Francois Massonneau

Hi,
I've got a cd-rom which comes with kernel 2.4.0-test2. I have patches
"test3" to "test7" also.
How can I apply those patches ?
The only things I did, were :
- to delete the link between /usr/src/linux and /usr/src/linux-2.2.15
- Then I copied the file linux-2.4.0-test2.tar.bz2 in my /usr/src
directory.
- I unpacked the file,
- Then I recreated the link between /usr/src/linux and
/usr/src/linux-2.4.0
- and finally I copied the patches in my /usr/src directory.
Now, what do I have to do to apply those patches ?
Does someone can give me the process step by step ?
Thank in advance. Francois

I use a PIII 500 with 64Mb of RAM. Starting up SO does take some time,

The problem is trying to do anything else on your computer, e.g.. use
Netscape. Once you change applications your disk starts swapping and
never stops.
I use VMware and Win95 with Office97. This uses less memory and is
'quicker' than using Staroffice.
Maybe I should buy some more RAM and give Staroffice another go.

[newbie] SCSI hidding some EIDE66 drives

2000-02-29 Thread Francois . JUNIQUE

I have a ABIT BP6 motherboard
with 2 ATA33 controlers (unused except a DVD drive)
and 2 ATA66 controlers (each with a large disk) (these 2 extra controlers are handled
by a hpt366 chipset)
I installed Mandrake70gpl without any problems (as far as I could see :-)) in addition
to a win98 system. And I was very happy to be able to use Gimp.

This weekend I added a scsi card (2930cu) for a CDwriter and external disk.
Linux does not work any longer!
It sees my DVD drive (EIDE1) and CDwriter (SCSI) and external disk (when present) - no
problem with the scsi card - but not the EIDE3 4 (where it is installed).

When trying reinstalling it, it offers to see additional SCSI cards, I tried (as on
Win98 the hpt366 is seen as a pseudo scsi controler), it can see the chipset but in
the list of scsi card to be selected, of course it doesn't appear!

I am stuck dead!

All suggestion welcome, thanks in advance

Francois

2000-02-29 Thread Francois . JUNIQUE

Should I mentionned that with win98 I have no problems at all,
I can see all my peripherals
so I am not that encline to change interrupts just for Linux sake...

BTW my computer is not hanging at all, it just doesnt see the extra
EIDE66 drives from linux. It really looks like once it has seen that
there is SCSI it does not go futher to look for something else not basic EIDE.

Thanks anyway for these first comments

[newbie] Display - Gtk warning

1999-12-20 Thread Francois Massonneau

Hi,

When I want to run a program, this is the warning message I've (and of
course, the program doesn't fire up) :
Gtk-WARNING ** : cannot open display.
I have a Matrox Millenium II, and have no problem when running Xwindow.
What do I have to do to make it works ? Thanks. Francois

[newbie] JDK and Java

1999-12-19 Thread Francois Massonneau

Hi,

I've just discovered Linux and installed Mandrake 6.1 (Helios).

I have to run a java program that needs the JDK
I downloaded the jdk_1.1.7-v1a-glibc-x86.tar.gz and it gave me the
folowing error when I tried to run simply "./java"
 /usr/local/jdk117_v1a/bin/../bin/i686/green_threads/java : error in
 loading shared libraries : ./../lib/i686/green_threads/libjava.so :
 undefined symbol : _dl_symbol_value

Yesterday I tried to find another jdk package, and I spent one hour
and an half to dowload it :-(. It was jdk-117_v1a-2.i386.rpm, but it
failed the same way as the previous one ;-((

Does someone can help me ?
Thanks in advance. Francois
