Boy it is going to be difficult to filter that! (Assuming that we have enough

 should cut the number down with no human intervention. If all the "I want
 to be here" users agree to not use the "unsubscribe" word in their posts.,
 then we could extend the filter to catch that word /anywhere/ in the
 message.

Re: [newbie] compiling details

2000-02-24 Thread Jackal

I hope I can help but I can only guess ...

 -I did ./config, make and make install with all of them, no problem with
   the smaller programs, but the big ones have either,
   - module dependencies, wich shouldn't be there cause the asked modules are
  allready installed (MICO asked for Qt for instance, but Qt definately is
  installed (what ever Qt is... I'm not shure about,but it shows as
  installed in the RPmanager))

That's funny .. usually if you download the source to sompile and they use
autoconf then the script to run is ./configure then make then make install.
Anyway ... that aside ... very often the place that RedHat and hence Mandrake
place the library files is not in the place that the source normally looks for
it ... my suggestion is to either look for the rpm for the program you want to
compile (rpmfind.net should be a good start) or find out which are the library
files that it needs and look through the README (or readme or Readme whatever)
and INSTALL (install, Install, etc) to see how to specify the location of
library files during either the configure or make stage.

   or
   - PERMISSION ERROR

 And yes..., I did run ./config etc... as root!

 I think I allready know the direction the problem is commin from: I do run the
 installation as root, but I do install in an users account. I have to, because
 there is not that much space left in /usr/bin IS THAT THE PROBLEM?

The permission problem is a bit trickier ... usually if you are running as
root, the script would have the permission to write stuff anywhere ... the
only thing I can think of is that the file you are trying to run does not have
executable permissions ...

I am not sure whether this is any help but I hope I have given you some
glimmer of hope in solving your problem...

[newbie] Information of unsubscribing to the list

2000-02-23 Thread Jackal

Hi ... I have been following the thread of mails on this list about people not
knowing how to unsubscribe from this list. This is what I have to say and my
suggestion to solve this problem.

A lot of people join this list because they are newbies ... and I expect a
great deal of them rely on a ppp connection via whatever means (the point I am
trying to make is it may be slow or expensive) ... this list is extremely high
volume in my opinion ... this is actually a good sign but not everybody is
expecting the sudden fllod of mails coming in to his mailbox ... although I
agree with some comments made ont his list that people should keep the
subscription mail and read the instructions on it to unsubscribe I also think
that we can be more accomodating to newbies having absolutely no idea what
they are doing ...

so might I suggest that someone (I am willing to do it) sends a short mail to
the list every now and then ... (I was thinking one or two days) ... the
subject line of this instruction can be made clear to everyone already on this
list so that they can procmail or filter it off ...

this is just a suggestion .. so try to be calm when you reply with your
comments ...

 First of all, thanks for your FAST response! I would REALLY appreciate, if
 you could give me a hand in solving my problem.
 I will explain at what point I am...

  DOS is nothing else than SUICIDE if you have ext2 partition on your HD.
  It already has destroyed some of my partitions while I didn't ask him anything.

 HOW do I use the Linux fdisk program?

  Normally, if you let the installation program handle the LILO installation, you
  should just type DOS at the boot prompt, and it should boot your window
  partition.

 I tried this, but it doesn`t work. I can ONLY boot Linux with the floppy
 and then I have the choice between "Linux" and "rescue"!

  if it doesn't (and that your windows partition hasn't been destroyed!!!), you
  have to configure lilo, by editing the /etc/lilo.conf file.

 PLEASE do NOT say those things... :-))
 I hope it has NOT been destroyed!! I have already edited/viewed the
 lilo.conf file. I will write farther down what I have in this file.

  PS : if you REALLY urgently need to boot your windows, you can boot with a DOS
  floppy disk and type fdisk /mbr to restore a windows MBR. But then you'll have
  to boot your linux with a LILO floppy or something to reinstall lilo and be
  able to boot both win and linux.

 I already tried this, but it does NOT work !!! :-((

 so, here is what I have in my lilo.conf:

 __

 boot=/dev/hda3
 read-only
 pompt
  (and so on)...

 other=/dev/hda1
 label=windows
 table=/dev/hda

 other=/dev/sda1
 label=windows2
 table=/dev/hda

 image=/boot/vmlinuz
 root=/dev/hda3
 label=linux
 append=""

 and then the stuff for old_linux,floppy etc.
 _

 so... HOW can I get my Windows to work??? Can I create a new partition
 from Linux for Windows?

 I can access and see ALL my files from Linux! I have two icons on my
 desktop, for hda1 and sda1 (my Linux is on hda3 by teh way..) and clicking
 on these icons, I see all my Windows stuff.

 Please help me!!

 Thanks

Yes fips does do a non-destructive resize. The interface is a quite like the

 Sounds like you had the same problem, it doesn't see my

Re: [newbie] terminal related lockups

I am not sure if our problems are one and the same but I had this problem on
my laptop. Occasionally, the system will lock the keyboard and the mouse and
I had to switch it off and on to continue...but a quick look at the clock
showed that the system is still running.

I was desperate and wrote a script that will reboot the machine if it cannot
find a certain file in the /tmp directory. every now and then it checks the
directory and removes it if it is present and checks back after an
interval...which means every now and then i have to touch the file in the
directory...i know it seems stupid but at least the machine can shutdown
cleanly without me having to sit through an fsck whenever this happens
The wierd thing is that since i implemented this script the problem has been
so infrequent that is has almost (touch wood) disappeared!

I cannot explain this X-filish phenomenon but this is just my 2 cents...

Well Netscape has to get the blame partially but a big part of the blame has
also to go to the guys administering the webserver as well. There is a file
called mime.types (it is there in linux systems as well probably under the conf
dir in httpd). Soemtimes stuff like rpm and gz tgz etc are not registered
there properly thus causing the webserver to send it out as default (which
happens to be text) In windows IE does a better job handling stuff that comes
in (it think it checks the extension with the associated applications etc) but
netscape will take what the webserver gives u.

Okay that's my 2 cents...

 to override them (i.e. specify *.rpm, *.gz, *.bz2, etc. as binaries).
 Anyway, what you CAN do is hold down SHIFT while you click the link.
 That will tell Netscape that no matter what, you want to save the target
 of this link, not display it whether it be binary, text, or unspecified).

 don't have room on my hd. Thanks for the help.

run "Xconfigurator" and choose 8bpp and 640*480 as one of hte choices of
reslution and screen depth when it comes to that stage...
u might need to find out information like your monitor's refresh rates etc
though...(should find that info in the manual that comes with your monitor...

Actually, i think the workstation installation does that as well (qipes out
paritions and then creates new ones). I have never used the server nor
workstation installation method but I thought that I read it in the manual
somewhere.

 You have selected install. One way to avoid the problem is to choose
 "Workstation" and let the installer worry about the unformatted or
 non-windows
 partitions. The second way is to select CUSTOM and use Disk Druid.
 UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES select SERVER, because this installation wipes your
 disks
 before putting the server together.

 Once you are in DD, you will see a screen that identifies current partitions
 on
 both disks. If you want to communicate with windows files later, this is a
 great time to give names like /dos to a windows partition, /dos1 to the next,
 etc.

 If you have partitions that you will not otherwise use, delete them all and
 then
 begin to add new partitions.

 Here is a sort of minimal set.

 /boot of 30 M
 NON=labeled Linux Swap partition of a size equal to twice your memory, but no
 larger than 127M.
 / A root partition to take the rest of the disk.

 Disk Druid will line up your partitions so they are on CYLINDER boundaries.
 This means you will often get more Mb than you ask for, but never less. So
 if
 you ask for a 127Mb swap partition, Druid might tell you it is too big
 because
 the boundary falls at 131Mb. You have to tinker with these sizes a little to
 get exactly what you want. If you leave a couple Mb at the end of the disk,
 so
 much the better. There is a transparent way some filesystems can use this to
 substitute for bad blocks.

 This is just about what you would get with the WORKSTATION installation.

I dont really get the apache question but if the website if remote then u can
use somehting like wget to mirror the site. If it is local u can set a cron to
copy the contents to another directory. Actually come to think of it u can use
wget for the local as well just point to the loopback and set a cron to run it
at predetermined intervals.

As for your email question I think fetchmail and procmail combination is what u
might be looking for. I am sorry but I have never used procmail but I know
that u can configure it to filter base on headers and strings and stuff and
make rules to deliver the matching messge to wherever. U can use fetchmail to
pop (or imap) from different pop boxes by configuring the .fetchmailrc file in
your home directory. The syntax is really easy to use.

Hope I was of some help. Post again if u need more details.

 Can anyone tell me how to set up apache so that I can have my

 Are there any good files explaining how to set up e-mail
 distribution? I'd like to download e-mail from a variety of POP boxes
 and divide on x-smtp-envelope: to different users (and some
 perhaps to launch perl scripts).
