[newbie] problem with too much ram
Hi everyone, I have a problem with adding RAM that I hope someone can help me with. We have a Compaq SP750 (dual P3 866 Xeon) that had 1.5GB of RDRAM. When we added another 512MB to bring the total up to 2GB, the LM7.1 installed on the machine refuse to boot. It gets to the place where it's suppose to load the RAM disk (I think) but go into kernel panic: unable to mount root. We tried just putting in 1792MB of RAM, then the machine boots up w/o any problems. Anyone has any idea why? TIA. Andy
RE: [newbie] problem with too much ram
Don't be jealous... The machine is being used by the whole dept. (about 5 heavy duty users) for running large computational tasks. It originally came with 512MB RAM, but one user's "modest" job brought the machine to its knees. That's why we are adding RAM like that. (We actually have 2 machines like this. Haven't got the second one setup yet.) The machine is fairly new (6 months). According to Compaq, the mobo uses Intel 840 chip set (whatever that means), and can hold upto 4GB of 800-MHz ECC RDRAM. I'm quite sure the RAM modules were purchased from Compaq authorized dealers, so they ought to know what they are doing. Anyone else has any hints? Andy From: Tim Holmes [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Most motherboards have a certain amount of RAM it will support. A lot of them stop at 1.5 GB. The one I have does support 2 GB. But you should check the web page for the Motherboard and find out if that board will support the 2GB All I know is I'm jealous... 1.5 GB and a dual processor machine? :0( That would be SWEET!!! One other thing I just thought of, which most likely won't be an issues, but I know Comcrap (lol) used to only accept proprietary RAM. I'm pretty sure the did away with this, but I'm not sure how old your Motherboard is either. So it's possible that it doesn't support 2 GB of RAM, or it needs to be RAM from Comcrap. [newbie] how to permit users to mount SMB shares?
Hi everyone, We have a dual-P3 Xeon box running LM7.1 that is shared by people in my group. It would be nice if users can mount their own NT harddisk on their home directory under Linux. [newbie] WordPerfect 8 license key and PhotoPaint install
Hi, I downloaded WP8 and followed the instruction for installation. After the install, I typed "xwp". I can click on the button "Enter key later" and keep using the program. However, I thought the download version of WP8 is supposed to be better than the 90-day trialware that this apparently is. If the install program sees two CPUs, it will install the SMP kernel. For example, the kernel installed on our dual P3 Xeon box is 2.2.15-4mdksmp (from LM7.1). [newbie] problem printing to SMB from LM7.1 w/ Samba 207 and CUPS 115
Hi all, Can some kind soul help me with this problem? I've wasted a few days on this and didn't get very far...8- We have a Compaq SP750 (dual P3 Xeon) with LM 7.1 installed and connected to our corporate intranet (NT4). I have been struggling to set up printing to a SMB printer on the corporate network. I learned the hard way that I had to remove printpro. In my struggle I also removed lpr, printtool and rhs-filters (and others) to try and get cups to install. I finally got cups 1.1.5 rpm from the cups site to install. I also upgraded samba-common, samba, and samba-clients to 2.0.7. I can use smbclient and smbprint (slightly modified) to print, but I can't get cups to print. The status says "printer lp is disabled - Unable to connect to SAMBA host: Success". I checked Till's article, and it says to use kups. I checked out kups, and it requires KDE2 (along with other packages). I do *not* want to upgrade to KDE2 (yet), since I have LM7.2 with KDE2 at home and it is not as stable as KDE1. So, can someone tell me how to setup the SMB printer under cups? Where do I specify username and password? Can I use some magic filter with this setup (such as rhs-filters)? How? Also, the Linux box is being used by several people in my group. How do I configure the system so that everyone will be using his/her own NT username and password to print to the SMB printer? Thanks a bunch in advance! Andy

The share name is \\CRRY0F02\WRYBIO1. I tried using printerdrake to setup the printer, but can't figure out how to fill in these fields: SMB server host SMB server IP Share name User name Password Workgroup I tried looking in the control panel from my NT box for this printer, and found serveral IP's. Under the "General" tab, it has a greyed out box that says: HP 4050 ps xxx.xxx.xxx.220 #DHCP xx #IP:xxx.xxx.xxx.230 (4si/mx) Then on the "Ports" tab, it has an entry checked off: Port: xxx.xxx.xxx.222:AUTO Printer: WRYBIO1 So which is the right IP to use? There are two CDs in the 7.1 distribution. The second one (x86 extension) is optional. When you started the installation program should have, at some point, asked you which CDs you have (the retail boxes have two more CDs). If you don't have those CDs but check them off anyway, at the package installation stage the program will ask for these CDs. Supposedly you can just click on "cancel" if you don't have the CDs, and the installation should continue. However, there are times that this won't work for some reason. RE: [newbie]
You need to load the parport and a couple of other kernel modules. From a command line (such as a konsole window), type modprobe parport modprobe paride There is one more you need to load, but don't remember which (I have an parallel port Orb drive, not a ZIP drive). Go to any search engine and search for "linux paride". There is a web page with instructions for all kinds of parallel port drives. RE: [newbie] No-one answers ?
-- From: Kevin A Sadler[SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Reply To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, October 24, 2000 2:44 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [newbie] No-one answers ? Hi yoall. What's happened. No-one had my problem before ? On 21/10/00 I put forward the fact my desktop has expanded its picture to the size of my wall so all I can see on my puny 15" screen are the Application starter and Panel buttons. I have reinstalled about six times, partitioned, formatted over and over but it still looms brightly. If I could afford a 30' x 20' monitor I would have it all over yoall but I can't so I would like some help to get my graphic view back to rather normal. Thanks, anyone ! Kev Sadler It sounds like the desktop is larger than the screen resolution. If you try moving the mouse pointer to the corners, does the desktop "shifts"? If this is the case, you need to figure out a way to get to a higher resolution mode (check the manual or tons of info on the net) or set the virtual desktop to the same size as the screen resolution. Hope this helps. Andy
RE: [newbie] Flashing login-screen
Try alt-ctrl-+ and/or alt-ctrl-- (use the ones on the numeric keypad) and see if you can change to a lower-resolution video mode for X. Then login and reconfigure the high resolution mode for X. It could be the monitor selection, too. I had a NEC XV17+, but selecting that one from the list never worked. I ended up selecting a generic 1024x768. Hope this helps. But when the system tries to enter the logon-screen, it starts flashing, and i can´t logon. So now I cannot log-on at all! How can I get around this problem ?
RE: [newbie] Mandrake support
rawrite.exe is a DOS program that must be run from a command line. It's the original program that was used to write Linux boot floppy back when there's no such thing as LILO. Hope this helps. Andy -- From: Tim Jackson[SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Reply To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, October 13, 2000 3:51 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] Mandrake support I did receive a rather prompt response from mandrake. However, their answer doesn't seem to work. I may be missing something but I have no one to go over it with. I have formatted my hard drive and now want to install linux. I have an older P60 Dell and I have to boot with a diskette, I have a MagicSpin cdrom that the system can not find. The response I got back was create a special boot disk using cdrom.img under rawwrite.exe. I am not able to do anything once I open rawwrite.exe am I missing something? I have not had a response from them and its now been four days. Has anyone out there had any experience of their support? I think four days is much too long. Incidentally, I finally got around the problem, but I would still like to hear from Mandrake. Rod I also have been having problems with support form Mandrake. I have never really gotten a response from them. Even after several e-mails. Robert C.
