[newbie] problem with too much ram

2001-04-09 Thread Liaw, Andy

Hi everyone,

I have a problem with adding RAM that I hope someone can help me with.

We have a Compaq SP750 (dual P3 866 Xeon) that had 1.5GB of RDRAM. When we
added another 512MB to bring the total up to 2GB, the LM7.1 installed on the
machine refuse to boot. It gets to the place where it's suppose to load the
RAM disk (I think) but go into kernel panic: unable to mount root. We tried
just putting in 1792MB of RAM, then the machine boots up w/o any problems.
Anyone has any idea why?

TIA.

Andy

RE: [newbie] problem with too much ram

2001-04-09 Thread Liaw, Andy

Don't be jealous... The machine is being used by the whole dept. (about 5
heavy duty users) for running large computational tasks. It originally came
with 512MB RAM, but one user's "modest" job brought the machine to its
knees. That's why we are adding RAM like that. (We actually have 2
machines like this. Haven't got the second one setup yet.)

The machine is fairly new (6 months). According to Compaq, the mobo uses
Intel 840 chip set (whatever that means), and can hold upto 4GB of 800-MHz
ECC RDRAM. I'm quite sure the RAM modules were purchased from Compaq
authorized dealers, so they ought to know what they are doing.

Anyone else has any hints?

Andy

Most motherboards have a certain amount of RAM it will
 support. A lot of
them stop at 1.5 GB. The one I have does support 2 GB. But
 you should
check the web page for the Motherboard and find out if that board will
 support the 2GB

All I know is I'm jealous... 1.5 GB and a dual processor machine? :0(
 That would be SWEET!!!

One other thing I just thought of, which most likely won't be
 an issues,
but I know Comcrap (lol) used to only accept proprietary RAM. I'm
pretty sure the did away with this, but I'm not sure how old your
 Motherboard is either.

So it's possible that it doesn't support 2 GB of RAM, or it
 needs to be
 RAM from Comcrap.

 Extremely jealous,

[newbie] how to permit users to mount SMB shares?

2001-02-23 Thread Liaw, Andy

Hi everyone,

We have a dual-P3 Xeon box running LM7.1 that is shared by people in my
group. It would be nice if users can mount their own NT harddisk on their
home directory under Linux. The problem is, when executed by a user, mount
says it can only be done by root. This is obviously for good reasons. Is
there anyway to give users permission to mount/umount specific things?

[newbie] WordPerfect 8 license key and PhotoPaint install

2001-02-13 Thread Liaw, Andy

Hi,

I downloaded WP8 and followed the instruction for
installation. After the install, I typed "xwp". The program
launched, but I get a dialog box saying "The grace period for
this software will expire after 90 days. "etc. and asks me
for a license key. I can click on the button "Enter key
later" and keep using the program. However, I thought the
download version of WP8 is supposed to be better than the
90-day trialware that this apparently is. Am I missing
something? Anyone has any idea?

Also, I downloaded PhotoPaint9 for Linux and installed it.
The problem is I don't know how to start the program! The
installer put a bunch of files in /usr/lib/corel, but I
couldn't find an appropriate excecutable under that directory
tree. I couldn't find anything in the README either. Has
anyone have better luck? Please let me know. TIA!

[newbie] dependency problems with rpm in LM7.1

Hi everyone,

I have LM7.1 installed on a machine shared by several people in the office.
I tried to install some newer apps with rpm, but several times hit the error
"only packages with major number =3 are supported by this version of RPM".
I checked the version of rpm I have, and it says 3.0.4. I tried to upgrade
rpm to 3.0.5, but it needs a newer version of "menu". Trying to install the
newer version of "menu" again gives me the error "only packages with major
number =3 are supported by this version of RPM". Can someone help me get
out of this loop? Much appreciated!!

[newbie] USB Orb drive with SCSI HD

2001-02-02 Thread Liaw, Andy

Hi,

I have a question about how to access my USB Orb drive on a machine that has
SCSI HD.

In my machine at home I have an IDE HD. To use the USB Orb drive, I do the
following:

modprobe usb-storage
modprobe usb-uhci

and then check /proc/scsi/scsi to see that the drive is recognized. Then I
mount it by

mount -tvfat /dev/sda5 /mnt/orb

My question is, I'm trying to use the Orb drive on the Linux box at work (I
have stock LM7.1 running on both), which has a SCSI HD and a SCSI tape
drive. What device would the Orb drive be then?

TIA!

Try "cat /proc/cpuinfo", or run "ktop" and click on the performance meter

 Hello,
I am pretty new to the linux environment, and I have a
 question. I have
installed linux mandrake 7.2 and updated the kernel to 2.4, with SMP
enabled. I am using a dual celeron motherboard, hence the SMP. I was
wondering if there is any way of explicitly telling if the
 dual processor
support is enabled. My hard drake lists only one processor under the
processor type, and that is the only indication I know of.
 Any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated. thank you

RE: [newbie] Dual processors ??

2001-01-11 Thread Liaw, Andy

If the install program sees two CPUs, it will install the SMP kernel. For
example, the kernel installed on our dual P3 Xeon box is 2.2.15-4mdksmp
(from LM7.1). As mentioned before, only multi-thread apps and apps
specifically written for SMP will run faster.

Who makes mobo for dual Athalons? I thought AMD said they won't have
SMP-capable Athalons until later this year.

Andy

Well, i've never run SMP. From what I understand, a multi processor

[newbie] problem printing to SMB from LM7.1 w/ Samba 207 and CUPS 115

2001-01-05 Thread Liaw, Andy

Hi all,

Can some kind soul help me with this problem? I've wasted a few days on
this and didn't get very far...8-

We have a Compaq SP750 (dual P3 Xeon) with LM 7.1 installed and connected to
our corporate intranet (NT4). I have been struggling to set up printing to
a SMB printer on the corporate network. I learned the hard way that I had
to remove printpro. In my struggle I also removed lpr, printtool and
rhs-filters (and others) to try and get cups to install. I finally got cups
1.1.5 rpm from the cups site to install. I also upgraded samba-common,
samba, and samba-clients to 2.0.7.

I can use smbclient and smbprint (slightly modified) to print, but I can't
get cups to print. The status says "printer lp is disabled - Unable to
connect to SAMBA host: Success". I checked Till's article, and it says to
use kups. I checked out kups, and it requires KDE2 (along with other
packages). I do *not* want to upgrade to KDE2 (yet), since I have LM7.2
with KDE2 at home and it is not as stable as KDE1.

So, can someone tell me how to setup the SMB printer under cups? Where do I
specify username and password? Can I use some magic filter with this setup
(such as rhs-filters)? How?

Also, the Linux box is being used by several people in my group. How do I
configure the system so that everyone will be using his/her own NT username
and password to print to the SMB printer?

Thanks a bunch in advance!

Andy

[newbie] help configuring a SMB printer on LM7.1

2001-01-02 Thread Liaw, Andy

Hi everyone,

Can someone help me configuring LM7.1 to print to a printer on our NT
network? I was told that I should not run the LM7.1 box as a Samba server,
so all I want to do is print to this network printer.

The info:
The printer is a HP 4050 (Postscript) on our corporate NT network. The
share name is \\CRRY0F02\WRYBIO1. I tried using printerdrake to setup the
printer, but can't figure out how to fill in these fields:

SMB server host
SMB server IP
Share name
User name
Password
Workgroup

I tried looking in the control panel from my NT box for this printer, and
found serveral IP's. Under the "General" tab, it has a greyed out box that
says:
HP 4050 ps
xxx.xxx.xxx.220
#DHCP xx
#IP:xxx.xxx.xxx.230 (4si/mx)
Then on the "Ports" tab, it has an entry checked off:
Port: xxx.xxx.xxx.222:AUTO
Printer: WRYBIO1
So which is the right IP to use?

Also, should I use my NT domain username and password? But the Linux box is
shared by several people in my group (each with own NT username and
password).

Any help are greatly appreciated. TIA!!

The printer is a Epson Stylus 600. It is connected to a scanner, which in
turn, is connected to the parallel port. It was working fine when I had
LM7.0. It still works fine under Win98SE. When I try sending jobs with
lpr, it just doesn't do anything. I tried PrinterDrake, and neither the
ASCII nor PS test page will print. Oddly, if I cat an ASCII file to
/dev/lp0, it does print. Can anyone provide some hints?

RE: [newbie] Fw: helpppppppppp

2000-11-03 Thread Liaw, Andy

There are two CDs in the 7.1 distribution. The second one (x86 extension)
is optional. When you started the installation program should have, at some
point, asked you which CDs you have (the retail boxes have two more CDs).
If you don't have those CDs but check them off anyway, at the package
installation stage the program will ask for these CDs. Supposedly you can
just click on "cancel" if you don't have the CDs, and the installation
should continue. However, there are times that this won't work for some
reason. I ran into a similar problem before (I put in the CD but it refuse
to recognize it). After 4~5 tries of starting the installation over, it
finally worked.

Hope this helps. Will be glad to help further.

 Hi ,
I suppose I am considered a newbie since I have only learned computers
this past year. I am however very brave or stupid cause I have tackled
 cmos,
bios, fdisking etc. I am also quite good at putting computers together and
 fix
many peoples for them. I can not however do a clean install of Linux for
 the
life of me. I give up and come back to it thinking as I learn more I will
 have a
better chance of a sucess. ARGH, is all I can say. I have tried to install
 mandrake
6,7 and 7.1 as well as Stormix. All programs were from maximum linux mags.

I have since gotten a larger hard drive and it is SCSI ,which I thought
 would be
better. I started the setup and after one and a half hours I got a message
 to
put the extension 86 cd into my drive to continue or cancel if I did not
 have it
this of course stopped my installation since I had no clue what it was let
 alone
 try to install it.

At this point I am now completely frustrated I like Windows but I am sick
 of
all the fatal exception errors and the many bugs windows has.

I NEED SOME HELP, I am either completely out of my mind or I just donèt
 get.
The more times I fail the more I want to install it.

I have had sucessful installs if I do not need windows but unfornately I
 still need
to use windows for all the proggrams not supported by Linux. If anyone has
 any
suggestions I would be glad to here them.

My system is a Pentium 200mmx
Ati all in wonder 8 mg video card
 creative ensonique sound card
A adaptec AHA pci SCSI controller
 40x cd-rom
Yamaha cd-recorder 4x (which I can not figure out)
9 gig Quantum (vikingII) HARD DRIVE (installed)
3 gig fujitsu hard drive(installed) IDE
 US Robotics 56k voice modem

Barracuda hard drive(not sure if I will install
 it)

RE: [newbie] Creative Modem Blaster PCI modem

2000-11-02 Thread Liaw, Andy

I also have a modemblaster (don't remember if it's PCI). It's NOT a
winmodem, but it is PnP. I had to disable the PnP (thru a jumper on the
modem board) to get it working with plain old IRQ and DMA.

The ModemBlaster PCI is a winmodem.
Check Linmodem.org. There is a chance that there may be a driver available
 for your modems chipset.
Otherwise, if you want to connect to the internet in Linux you will need
 to
get a hardware based modem. There are PCI models that run under $50.

RE: [newbie] Problem with login

2000-10-24 Thread Liaw, Andy

I think there is an option that displays asterisks when typing in the
password field. The plain vanilla xdm login screen does this by default.
It's Mandrake's default *not* to display the asterisks.

Linux DOES NOT ECHO PASSWORDS to the screen.

Type your password in the field and tap enter oe click GO.

Are you guys using 2.0 or the earlier version? The VMWare web site said
that 2.0 is supposed to be quite a bit better. Has anyone experienced this?

 Renaud,

To tell you the truth it will run slow as molasses on Neptune with 128MB
of RAM. And that was on a 500Mhz processor. It's really cool software for
what it's doing, but IMHO it's not a mission critical solution. I don't
even use it at home anymore. I tried it for a week and the slow
 performance drove me nuts.

RE: [newbie]

2000-10-24 Thread Liaw, Andy

You need to load the parport and a couple of other kernel modules. From a
command line (such as a konsole window), type

modprobe parport
modprobe paride

There is one more you need to load, but don't remember which (I have an
parallel port Orb drive, not a ZIP drive). Go to any search engine and
search for "linux paride". There is a web page with instructions for all
kinds of parallel port drives.

 Hi yoall.
What's happened. No-one had my problem before ?
On 21/10/00 I put forward the fact my desktop has expanded its picture to
the size of my wall so all I can see on my puny 15" screen are the
Application starter and Panel buttons. I have reinstalled about six times,
partitioned, formatted over and over but it still looms brightly. If I
could afford a 30' x 20' monitor I would have it all over yoall but I
can't so I would like some help to get my graphic view back to rather
 normal.
 Thanks, anyone !
 Kev Sadler

It sounds like the desktop is larger than the screen resolution. If you try
moving the mouse pointer to the corners, does the desktop "shifts"? If this
is the case, you need to figure out a way to get to a higher resolution mode
(check the manual or tons of info on the net) or set the virtual desktop to
the same size as the screen resolution.

Hope this helps.

RE: [newbie] Flashing login-screen

2000-10-21 Thread Liaw, Andy

Try alt-ctrl-+ and/or alt-ctrl-- (use the ones on the numeric keypad) and
see if you can change to a lower-resolution video mode for X. Then login
and reconfigure the high resolution mode for X. It could be the monitor
selection, too. I had a NEC XV17+, but selecting that one from the list
never worked. I ended up selecting a generic 1024x768.

Hope this helps.

rawrite.exe is a DOS program that must be run from a command line. It's the
original program that was used to write Linux boot floppy back when there's
no such thing as LILO.

Hope this helps.

I have formatted my hard drive and now want to install linux. I have an
