[newbie] Samba Issue?

2002-05-29 Thread Pauljames Dimitriu

Here is a problem I'm having and I'm not sure if it's
a Samba issue or a Linux issue:

I have a bunch of users that connect to a shared
folder and upload shared files. The problem here is
the read / write permissions: Whenever anything gets
put up on the server, the other users do not have
access to this file. Subsequently, when the author
tries to bring it over via Network Neighborhood in
Windows, the file is marked as read only.

Is this a samba issue or a Linux issue? What would be
a correct solution?

TIA,

Paul

2002-03-27 Thread Pauljames Dimitriu

I've got an ugly problem.

When I boot my computer I get a message saying "File
System Errors, would you like to fix this problem"

In the Graphical startup, I get what looks like two
buttons at the bottom of the screen saying "Yes or
No", but I can't do antyhing w/ them.

When I boot into failsafe, I can get to a prompt, but
if I type in fsch (is this the command), nothing
happens. I get the same question "would you like
to fix this error". When I type Yes, I get a message
saying that it failed.

How do I fix this?

[newbie] Configuring Samba

2002-03-21 Thread Pauljames Dimitriu

Sorry if this got posted twice

I am finishing the smb.conf file on my Linux
machine but I have come
upon a problem. I have a couple of user accounts on
Linux and I want to
connect to them via Win 2k from my home network. When
I double click on the
Linux computer from Network Neighborhood, I get a
popup asking me for my
username and password. I supply the correct username
and password, but I
don't connect. However, if I don't enter a username
and password, I will
see all of the shares.

The question: What do I have to insert into my
smb.conf file in order
for me to see my users home directories? My smb.conf
file follows (don't worry, it's not that big...)

Thanks,

Paul

[newbie] Email Service

2002-03-13 Thread Pauljames Dimitriu

Hi All,

Forgive if this message appears twice, but I
don't see it on the list.

Question: How do I set up my computer as a POP3

554 : Recipient address rejected: Relay

I have my IP address configured correctly on the
DNS end and I have the proper port forwarding on my
router. How can I check to see if POP3 service is
running? If it is running, what could be the problem?

 Thanks again,

[newbie] StarOffice 5.2

2002-02-24 Thread Pauljames Dimitriu

Hi,

I just installed StarOffice into my /usr/local

The obvious question comes up: How do I set

[newbie] CC

2002-01-31 Thread Pauljames Dimitriu

hello all,

I am just loaded w/ questions / problems this
week. Thank you all for being patient.

 This is my latest dilemna:

Due to a series of accidents, all old versions
of GCC got deleted from
my Linux box (please, don't ask how.) I downloaded
GCC 3.0.3 for Linux and
tried to install it according to the directions, but
the install is saying
that it can't find a valid CC compiler for this. Now
I checked my /bin directory for cc and I found the
following:

-rwxr-xr-x1 root root 138461 Jan 17
23:18 cc*

 However, when I do a ./cc in the /bin directory I
get an error saying "bash: ./cc: No such file or
directory"

As always, any help anyone can provide would be
much appreciated.

 Thanks,

 Paul

[newbie] GCC / CC compiler problems

2002-01-11 Thread Pauljames Dimitriu

Hello,

I wrote a while ago about problems I was having
w/ the GCC / CC compilers and I still can't get it to
work.

I checked my /usr/bin directories as people have
suggested and I see the files are still there. When I
do an ls in the /usr/bin directory, I get the
following:

 gcc*

and when I do an ls cc in the same directory, I
get the following:

 cc@

Now I do a "set cc = /usr/bin/cc" and that
doesn't work. I do a "set cc = /usr/bin/cc@" and that
doesn't work either, nor does it work w/ any
permutation of "set gcc = /usr/bin/gcc"

Any ideas of anything that might be wrong? I
have no idea what's happening. I'm guessing it has
something to do w/ the (*) and the (@) that follows
the file name.

 Thanks,

 Paul

[newbie] VI Question and Building Pine

2002-01-02 Thread Pauljames Dimitriu

Hello All,

I have a couple of questionshopefully you
will be able to answer them ;-)

 1) When I use VI on Unix, in order to get the
system command, I hit Shift-Q, then I can write, quit,
etc. However, when I do this, I don't get the system
command. Also, when I ssh into my server from a
Windows ssh terminal and use VI, I get garbage on the
screen, regardless of the file. Any idea?

 2) I downloaded Pine from the University of
Washington so I can do mail from a ssh. The
instructions say to type "build lnx" in order to get
it to work. However, when I type in this command, it
says it can't find the command build. I look in the
directory and I see a find a file called build* I see
that asterisk in many files. What does that mean and
how do I access the "build" file?

 Thanks for everyone's help.

You are correct about the twice-compressed file.

You need to do the following (from a terminal):

2) tar -xvf *.tar

[newbie] RPM Problems

2001-12-19 Thread Pauljames Dimitriu

Hello All,

I posted this question before, but I don't think
it made it to the message board.

I just downloaded a new driver for my Lexmark
Z35 printer and it's in RPM format. Unfortunately
when I double click on it, I get an error saying that
Nautilus (I use Gnome) does not have a viewer for
this. I do a "which rpm" and it says it exists. Now
when I do rpm from the command line, I get an error
saying something about an improper database (something
about db3.) When I go to download a new version of
RPM, I see that all old versions are in RPM format.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Also, where is the inetd.conf file located for
Linux Mandrake? I need to start up Samba.

 Thank you very much.

[newbie] Setting up A CVS Server

2001-10-21 Thread Pauljames Dimitriu

Hello,

I have CVS installed on my machine and I would like to
use it as a server. How do I get it going as a
server? In other words, how do I have people set up
an account, download, etc.?

Thanks,

Paul

[newbie] Insall and Screen Resolution

2001-10-05 Thread Pauljames Dimitriu

Hello,

I just started getting into Linux and I have two
questions:

 1) How do I change the screen resolution size?
Right now it is at 640x480 and I would like it at
800x600. How do I do that?

 2) I just installed WINE and another program
(FreeAmp), but I don't see any icons for these. Where
does the install normally put these programs?

Yes, I am a Windows person, but I am looking
forward to using another OS.

 Thanks,

 Paul
