Re: [newbie] What version (distro?) to run on my new box?

2002-08-22 Thread Steve Maytum

Unless i'm mistaken , all distros revolce around the kernel capabilities.
Therefore whichever distro you use is O.K. Personally i use Mandrake (the
first distro i installed sucessfully!) However Slackware and Debian are two
alternatives that are supposedly better for somethings as long as you are
prepared to learn. The final choice is yours , but if you're already using
Mandrake - continue and use more command line where possible might be as
wise as anything. Any comments anyone? Regards [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [newbie] corrupted boot-urgent help needed

2002-03-19 Thread Steve Maytum

Hakan , unless i'm mistaken the answer is quite simple. Shutdown your PC
re-boot with a Windows start-up floppy and re-install your Win95. This
overwrites MBR but provided you have a Linux boot floppy you can get back
into your Linux. Then re-write lilo/conf file (i think) and from a shell
Issue command to run /sbin/lilo. Check with others correct file to edit when
back in Linux. HTH! [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,

I am getting this error ( along with a long list of errors) on bootup.

" ... dev/hda6 was not cleanly unmouted .."

I checked http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/admin/amount3.html#fsck

it indicated that either 1) i haven't run shutdown before turning the
machine off or 2) or were forced to reboot the machine because of a system
freeze

neither one is true.

I was wondering how I can begin to fix this problem.

thanks in advance.

This sounds as though you have some conflicting software going on as / user.
Have you installed all O.K? Something didn't quite finish how you wanted?
Until then you will get this message. Post some of error messages , they may
give more ideas as to what is wrong and i,ll try again. Regards

I just built a new system, a AMD 1Ghz with 256 MB of RAM and I went to
install LM 8.0 on it, and it freaked out. The error is as follows:

Loading program into memory
[***]
install exited abnormally :-( -- recieved signal 11
sendind termination signals . . . done

and then it reboots.

I dont know what the problem is, I tried expert mode, and every other one
and
I couln't get it to work, could someone please tell me whats going on.

Once it said something about not being able to load the second stage ram
disk.

Thanks in advance!

I think Fdisk/Disk druid are two Linux tools used for setting up partitions
for your distro install. The MS fdisk is a completely different tool and you
would have used FIPS beforehand. The MS fdisk then deletes a partition ready
for install. Think this info is correct (hope it makes sense) If not someone
else reading the list will put me right. Regards [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Luis , do you need to recover your Windows? If so you will need to boot from
a dos floppy and fdisk /mbr to get started reinstalling Windows. Then use
FIPS or Partition Magic (whatever you prefer really) to create Linux
partition. Then you can try using a Linux rescue floppy. If that fails , you
will probably have to reinstall. Others may give you a better idea if you

The info can also be found from Windows - but with only a little experience

Re: [newbie] KPP Problem - can't connect to Net as user

2000-11-02 Thread Steve Maytum

Hello Robert , don't know if this is the answer - but it worked for me.
Firstly , I attempted KPPP via KDE desktop. Secondly , you need to make sure
you have 1st and 2nd DNS numbers set up correctly in resolv.conf in /etc
directory. If this isn't clear enough - e-mail back and I'll go through it
with you stage by stage. Good Luck -- [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [newbie] Dual-boot question

2000-09-19 Thread Steve Maytum

Chris , If you know how to install second hard drive and load operating
system you should have no problem. You will need to use some kind of boot
management (lilo perhaps?) and all should be well

Re: [newbie] Learning Linux?

2000-09-13 Thread Steve Maytum

Gordon -- I think you may find Linux is easier to learn if you're
comfortable working in DOS. If not "dive in" like I did , you can always get
help online as well as from textbooks -- Good Luck!

Dennis -- have you tried using a rescue disk (if you have one) , and has
this helped? If not post a message with greater detail and someone will
probably give you an answer. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[newbie] KPPP still giving me aggro!

2000-08-24 Thread Steve Maytum

Please someone , help if you can. Installed and
configured Madrake 7. Set up kppp , but sometimes will - sometimes wont.
Creation of duplicate files (host.conf & resolv.conf) created continuously.
Any ideas? I thought I had it all figured , but I've missed something and I
can't find what it is.
