[newbie] best way to update apps in Linux?

2003-07-23 Thread Zlatko Savic
Hi, I am a newbie and I'd like to know what is the best way to update
applications in Linux? I've heard something about urpmi but I am not really
sure how it works or what it is.

I've attempted to compile sources of newer versions of software (i.e.
alsa-snd-cards), without ever removing the currently installed version and
I had a lot of compiling errors. I don't know if it is better to compile
than to install an RPM.

There should be a generalized standard in Linux that all applications
adhere to (I.e. the registry in Windows). Of course whatever it is, it
should be better than Winblows.

ZS

[newbie] rpmdrake not showing manually installed packages ?

2002-10-11 Thread Zlatko Savic
Hi, I was wondering whether any packages that are installed manually by the
user (i.e. tar, gzip, make, etc...) can be displayed as installed package
in rpmdrake? I do not get it but maybe there is a way. The reason for this
is simply because some rpm packages that I install using rpmdrake check
their dependencies __IN___ rpmdrake ___only and always say that they
are missing the packages I installed manually. How can I avoid that problem?

Zlatko

[newbie] enlarge a linux partition?

2002-06-29 Thread Zlatko Savic

Hey everyone,
my question is simple but solution might not be.
I have installed some time ago MD 7.2 and have only / and /home mounted
on two partitions. I need to enlarge my / (root) partition because I
continue adding applications but there is not much space left. Should I
simply use Partition Magic and enlarge it, or maybe create another
partition and mount it on /usr or /etc or any other space-consuming
partition?

Thanks for any help,
Zlatko

[newbie] unusual partitioning question

2002-04-02 Thread Zlatko Savic

hey everyone, i have a weird question and i am trying to ask it without
confusing everyone, even myself.
I installed my MD 7.1 some time ago with the following setup:

/(root) on /dev/hda5
swap on /dev/hda6
/home on /dev/hda7

Now I am trying (if it is possible, that is) to separate my /boot directory
from the /(root) . Basically, without reinstalling, formatting or doing
anything to my system I want to separate /(root) and /boot that are on
/dev/hda5 so that I get something like:

/boot on /dev/hda5
/(root) on /dev/hda6
swap on /dev/hda7
/home on /dev/hda8

I have played around previously with some ideas and they all lead me to a
complete reinstall of the system so that is why I am asking for your help.
The reason for this question is my desire to make a dual linux boot without
completely deleting my current linux install.

Thanks in advance,
Zlatko Savic

[newbie] soundcard detect?

2002-04-01 Thread Zlatko Savic

Hey everyone, I would really appreciate it if someone would give me some
tips to how to go about in finding out
about the soundcard that I have. I cannot get it to run, but the problem is
I don't know what type nor what the specs of it are.
It is CS 4263 (or similar) in Windoze but where can I find out more about
it in Linux? (IRQs, DMA, ...etc.)

Thanks to everyone!

[newbie] Forceful umount or PARTED help?

2002-03-28 Thread Zlatko Savic

Hey everyone, I used the 'rescue' option from the Mandrake Install (8.1) CD
and after it was loaded and all partitions were mounted, I tried to unmount
my /dev/hda5, which is my root during normal usage. However, the response
was that the 'device or resource is busy'. I tried
umount -f /dev/hda5 but without any success.
I am trying to unmount all linux partitions on my hd so that I can move
them from one place (sector) to another (sector) using 'parted' which is
included in the rescue mode.
Any ideas how to go about this?

Thanks to all helpers out there!

[newbie] Where are the sources???

2002-03-11 Thread Zlatko Savic

Hey everyone, I downloaded MD 8.1 (all 3 cds) recently but i noticed
a backdraw...the source rpms for my apps are missing. I checked the rpms
on all 3 cds and the only source i found was apache source. Isn't it
required by the GPL and all the other licenses to INCLUDE source codes
in the the distro cd? Correct me if I am wrong.

[newbie] execute in shell?

2002-03-10 Thread Zlatko Savic

Hey everyone, this question is probably very simple to answer but as
a newbie it's not easy. =)

As root I must enter ./ (dot-slash) in front of any command or app
i want to execute from the shell. However, as a regular user, I don't
have to. I looked into my .bashrc but I cannot see a line of script that
does that. I'd like to know where that line is so i can set it up for
my root account too.

thanks for any kind of input,

Zlatko Savic

[newbie] dual linux boot from one hd?

2002-03-10 Thread Zlatko Savic

hi everyone, I am not sure if this can possibly work but I would like
to have MD 8.1 and 7.2 on the same harddrive and i would like it to boot
both from Lilo (or Grub).

I installed MD 8.0 next to 7.2 but the 8.0 simply took over mounting
of / and /home and left the 7.2 partitions unmounted. However, it
did take their partition names (dev/hda6 and /dev/hda7). I set up Lilo
to give the option to boot old_linux pointing correctly to the image
of the new /dev/hda13, etc. However, when I choose it, I get a dark screen
and everything freezes. How can i solve this? Do I have to have separate
file system types (ext2 for 7.2 and ext3 for 8.1?) or must i somehow
instruct Lilo to mount BACK / and /home to these new partitions?

Thanks for all help i can get,

Zlatko Savic

Re: [newbie] resizing partitions

2002-03-01 Thread Zlatko Savic

Yes, you can resize the SWAP partition using DiskDrake, ofcourse you
must be root to do that. Just load the DiskDrake, click on the (green)
swap partition and then on the left-hand side of the DiskDrake the option
'resize' (or similar) will appear. click on it and it will give you a
'drag bar' (or you can enter the number) that will allow you to choose
how much space you need to have allocated for your swap partition. It
doesn't damage your system since you have plenty of RAM memory. I have
reduced mine to 100mb swap (from 200) with 128 MB RAM. Works perfect.
However, the free space will probably be left in between your new swap
and your (i am assuming you have it setup like this) /home partition.
You might wanna mount that free space in between to a new /directory.

Hope that helps,

[newbie] Trackpoint support on TP600E w/ Mandr. 8?

2002-02-22 Thread Zlatko Savic

Hi everyone,
since the installation with DrakX my trackpoint on my Thinkpad 600E laptop
could not be detected. I tried every possible mouse choice from that
menu and it didn't work.

Besides Mandrake 8 I have on the same harddrive Mandrake 7.1 and here
the trackpoint is detected always.

What can I do to get the trackpoint working? Do I need a driver for it?

Any help greatly appreciated!
