Re: [newbie] USB mass-storage: HELP!
don't be optimistic about making your digital camera working with linux ... :( I had a similar problem with a flash drive in USB and after many posts and many many google search I ended up to make a conclusion that my drive IS NOT supported from linux. I have another USB stick that automounts and works fine ... but the first one refuses to work. Rules I made: -If the device is working fine it will be autodetected by /dev/sd* structure. -A device that appears on /dev/ structure doesn't implicity means that IS compatible with linux. -if the device is NOT compatible with linux , it will output error is fs type when I try to mount it manually Sorry for my not-so-optimistic post :) Iwan Binanto : Hi, I have a digital camera which act like mass storage when I connected it to my USB. But, I cannot mount this mass storage to my mount directory. I was done step by step some hint how to mount mass storage drive in linux and I still cannot mount that thing. Yea right ! I was in windows many years and as the site says: RTFM is the main concept in windows conserning the support (Read The Fucking Manual). Personally I don't get it. When I had a problem (some very difficult ones for advanced users) I could get answer from a public group in news.microsoft.com in less than an hour. Now in linux I think there is NO difference except: RTFM became RTFHTO (Read The Fucking How TO), Is this any change? From linuxgroups I got less answers in my question and a lot more answers outside the scope of my question. I can ask about let's say a mini program error and get answers like : Yeah M$ sucks! Note: 1. Don't blame anyone. 2. I don't like the thinking way ... ' we are smart ' they are stupid 3. I don't make any arguement of the official support, because the link refers to IRC, groups etc 4. I am tired to read from many people the there is only one way propaganda between two companies. Maybe because you don't get it? While there may be propaganda in both directions, it flows more heavily from Intel. LX was very specific regarding the benefits of AMD CPUs. That's not propaganda, that's fact. Yes. Intel does more propaganda in a real cruel way because now it happens to sell more CPUs from AMD, and so it has many ways to do this. But I think this works vice versa. If AMD was in the top of the market the same thing would happened. They are COMPANIES , they want to make money, they want to take over the market in their field. There is no such thing like a huge monster (Intel) that tries to destroy the little neighbour (AMD). Have you ever heard of Microsoft? Yes in this you are right. My arguement doesn't work in the example of MS. :) Is there any propagandistic content in the less clockspeed than the real one in AMD XP series? Their names (2200+ etc) are not a marketing deception. First, because they are not advertised as speeds. I know that , you know that... but... Tell that to a newbie in the world of computers that wants to buy a PC for internet and games, and thinks that is a complicated TV. You must convince me that this user will NOT take acount of the big number of phenomenal speed in the advertising pamphlet. Generally I think that no one must be in the side of one and only one company in this argument between the two. Both have made great progress in CPU production. Sometimes one is the better solution ( northwood vs XP ) sometimes the other (AMD64 vs Itanium). You've got it backwards. Generally you should take sides with the company that does consistently better work, and have the brains to make exceptions to the rule as circumstances dictate. Intel may eventually raise the standard of their products on a consistent basis. If and when they do, tech-heads here and elsewhere re-consider their positions. Tech-heads are smart people. But in the meantime, it _is_ reasonable position to side with AMD. I can disagree in the main concept of the above though... Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] questions about mdk 9.1
Hi to all the people in the list. I have some questions about my linux mdk 9.1 installation. #1. After a by-mistake reset at the time the mdk 9.1 was doing fsck check in my system. Some files have been lost. The only way to find out what files are missing from my installation is kpackage that give a long list of all files in every rpm of the system. I am pretty newbie to linux so I would like to make a total rpm check in my system so all the files that are missing from my system to be updated from the installation disks. Is it possible? I don't want to reinstall the OS. I take the reinstallation of mdk 9.1 as a defeat! In the past 3 moths I fought heavilly with all the problems I faced , trying to avoid reinstallation .. :) #2. the last days I cannot load inside KDE any application that wants su rights. (like mcc for example). I can go to terminal and type su and then mcc to load it . But when I click on the icon the application doesn't load! The same time a strange problem has appeared. When I login in KDE I get the network configuration wizard that wants me to enter root password to configure my network. I must click cancel to enter to desktop. I don't know for sure, but I think those two problems are related some how. Any help would be greatly appreciated Manolis --- Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] questions about mdk 9.1
26 2003 02:35, / Stephen Kuhn : Look - especially for a newbie, reinstallation ain't nothing more than a lesson - doing repeated installations only makes you smarter about how you're installing it, how you're making use of your disk space for optimal performance, what packages and options you're choosing from the beginning...I wish I could count how many times I've reinstalled any distribution of linux - it's thousands, mate, thousands... Meanwhile, a consideration to make is that you've corrupted the file system by accident - and that's alright - but if you do an installation again, you can choose a file system like ReiserFS that can generally handle such accidents - use it for your / and your /home partition - you might be surprised at the results. After the problem I was not able to login in KDE, after many tries ...now I can . I think this is a progress. One of the things I 'd loved about winXP is that I never reinstalled them. Even upgraded them from win2k ( I did many times recovery console though). I was pretty advanced in windows. As advanced can be one in a windowz environment. :) I do not like to reinstall all the applications and drivers now... I think it is a minor problem I could manage it .. in time... even though I am pretty newbie in linux world. One thing that admired from the first time in the world of linux is that anything can be done in such minor issues... or at WORST everything can be tried!!! :) The only info I got from the above is the ReiserFS that I didn't know about it. Thank you for this. Is there a place on the internet to read about ReiserFS? I'd tend to reckon that the system's corrupted, the /etc/passwd is probably corrupted - best reinstall. yes, but if there was a major problem in passwords handling there would be no pop up for root password in KDE eventually (some rare times it works!). The KDE is the only graphical GUI that gives me the error. The password handling is working fine in other GUIs. (IceWM , Gnome, WM). I want to state one time again that I am linux NEWBIE, with the above I don't try to be smart... I know that there are many things that I don't know ... I just want to figure out things through argument... Sorry for my english... Thanks for your post. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Try from a su console, mount /dev/sda1 and then look for a removable media in /mnt . Once you finish with it you should then do umount /dev/sda1 and the next time you won't be at sdb and so forth. Re: [newbie] OO is taking abnormally long...
Time to load OpenOffice from point of click to actual start of program. It loads all it's necessary libraries at that time, unlike MS Office that has DLL's loaded at the actual system bootup for Windows (whatever version); that's how MS Office appears to load so fast - it's because most of it's engine is already in system memory prior to even launching the application. That's how Microsoft makes use of slight of hand to make things appear faster - same with IE. My opinion is that I don't think this is cheating, it's a good idea to pre-launch many usable parts of libraries in boot time in windows. I don't close the system many times, so as many things are in the memory cache as better it is -- ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] Enter the fields of battle at ... http://www.kingsofchaos.com/page.php?id=795528 ___ There are 10 types of humans.
