Yes I can. You are running into the same problem I have been running
into, which is javascripts that shield the raw url from you.

What we need is a javascript plugin that will extract the raw links from
the embedded javascript.  Then you can play whatever you want to play;
mplayer is fully capable, as you already know; we just need the raw
links.

Perhaps some fiddling with file associations might work. I use Opera
and have Open Javascript console on error. When I pick the Face the
Nation video I get:

Inline script thread
Error:
name: TypeError
message: Statement on line 47: Expression evaluated to null or undefined
and is not convertible to Object:
navigator.mimeTypes[application/x-mplayer2]
Backtrace:

Line 3 of inline#1 script in
http://www.comedycentral.com/mp/play.php?player=realplayertype=vquality=highreposid=/multimedia/tds/headlines/9035.html
checkRedirect(error.php);

So it looks like it's a realplayer stream. The last line looks sort of
like a raw URL, but it isn't because native realplayer won't pull it up.

We need a way to extract raw urls from javascript.

Either way, all this would be a moot point if we had the raw link. Then
you just pass the raw link to mplayer on the command line, like so:

mplayer -cache 512 rtsp://video.c-span.org/project/c04/c04090104_rnc2.rm

As long as we can't extract raw links from javascript, we will
continually be at the mercy of any website that wants to be a bitch.
Someone needs to write an all purpose java plugin that will search and
destroy embedded javascript, spitting out raw urls and/or passing them
onto applications that we select.

Helix Player only plays open codecs, RealPlayer 10 plays the proprietory Real
codecs.

As players, there's not much to either of them.

As others have mentioned, MPlayer and Xine both play Real if you install the
Real codecs from PLF.

Click on advanced button, enter location of realplay file (mine is at

realplay at the command line -without the quotes - should give it to

again in the dialogue box and Realplayer should load.

Hope this helps - I'm relying on my memory which is unreliable in the main.

Tom,

If you have not got the powerpack, which has realplayer on the cd's for
Mandrake, then you should install using an rpm. Here's the one I use:

ftp://ftp.rpmfind.net/linux/freshrpms/misc/RealPlayer-8.0-1.i386.rpm

This one works. The realplayer rpms on the powerpack are better, but I
don't have them and I don't know if they are available for download.
The link above is a better option if you don't have the powerpack.

Use the command rpm -ivh RealPlayer-8.0-1.i386.rpm after download.

If you install the bin file, your rpm file tracking system will not have
any information on the files that it installs.

it installed the executable to mine in /usr/bin/Xqq/ as realplay. One
way to see where it's going to put the files it's installing is to query
it with gnorpm or look add the directory you download all your rpms to
as a source in the Mandrake Software Manager so you can use its search
function to locate the rpm then on the right side read the files tab on
the bottom section.

I downloaded Real Player 8 for Linux file rp8_linux_alpha_rh62_cs1.bin
According to Linux Newbie.com all I was supposed to do was double click
on the file and it would install. Well, since it didn't, I have not
done something right or I've done something wrong. Either way, I am not
installing the program. Did I download the wrong version of the
program? Am I not using the correct procedure to install a binary file?
I would really appreciate some help with this. I am and probably will
be for some time a newbie to Linux.

I have installed the RealPlayer Plugin into Netscape 6.2 for Linux. When I
go to my work site (npr.org) to listen to a real-audio file, I keep getting
an error that says that I have some conflict with the audio being opened.
Audio does work, I have the KDE startup and exit music, I can play CD audio
as well. I also have play audio from various games. In this multi-user
environment, what else should I check for to see what could be taking away
the audio from Real Player? I'm using LM 8.1 and I think the RealPlayer
is from the 7.2 cdrom, because I had problems installing RP 8.0.

 Thanks in advance

after adding these line to my /etc/rc.d/rc.local file (at the end, as root)
or running them as root in a text console it seems to have helped MY
real-audio to listen to NPR (my favorite radio on the planet, personally)

I can't offer you a fix for this but I have found that certain games
which use the sound, e.g Ltris or LBreakout (even if you switch of sound
in these games) tend to grab the soundcard and then not let it go when
I've finished - not a very technical description I admit. I can only
get it back for playing audio if I reboot the machine.

You may find that if you start Realplayer before using any of these that
it will work. Oh, and try switching off the system sounds as well -
they may be doing the same thing.

I'm sure that there are people in this list that could offer more
sophisticated and technical advice whereby you can have both game/system
sounds and audio. Personally I find the former a luxury that I can live
without.

A question about your issue. Are you having x to start automatically? Because
it mioght be a good idea to not do this until you get things working out
correctly. This solution worked for me,slightly different issue(respawning
too fast).Gd lk and let us know :-)

I cannot get more than 640x480 screen dimensions, and the computer thinks
this is the _only_ setting available for a Nvidia Geforce2 MX-200 3d
accelerator card (except it's listed as Geforce2 DDR (Generic) - this strikes
me as a potential problem). I'm extremely reluctant to accept that I paid
for a 3d card that doesn't work with this computer, so it must be operator
 error.

You should drop to a command level, leaving X. Then run Xconfigurator:

[root@tbird paul]# which Xconfigurator
/usr/X11R6/bin/Xconfigurator

There is a text interface when run outside of X, and that should get you
going.
Good luck!

It seems like i recall trying that, and it gave me refresh rate/screen size
combination is not possible for this hardware or something similar. I may
have done it from a console, not a true command level though.

Am I off-base then in thinking there is a problem with detecting the 3d
accelerator card?

I am not a videocard specialist. I think you should try and get 800x600
running with 256 colors. See if that works. Then try moving up gradually.
And check the specs for the card against what Xconfigurator shows.
Hope this gets you somewhere..
