[newbie] Boot Problem: cannot mount root fs
Hello everyone, I have been using Linux Mandrake 8.0 on my Dell Laptop for almost a year now. I set it up as a dual boot with Windows ME. It has a single 10 GB hard drive. Last weekend I tried to install a software package using Windows ME, and it locked up the machine. I had to physically remove all power to get the laptop to reboot. Now, I can't seem to boot my Linux! :-( Here is the message that is displayed on the screen: Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:08. Can anyone tell me if this is repairable? If so, how do I repair it? If not, can I reinstall Linux without losing my personal data files? Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you don't have boot disk, as many, please do like this. Get hold of explore2fs.exe from net. Install it in windows partition. Run it. It will show you the linux partition. From there export vmlinuz to windows c: drive. See what is the root partition for linux if you don't remember. Copy loadlin.exe to c: Now boot in DOS mode not DOS window. use the command loadlin vmlinuz root=/dev/hdax where x is the correct root partition number ie 1, 2, 3, etc. Now you can go to linux. As root in console type /sbin/lilo -v. Now your lilo is back. -- L.V.Gandhi 203, Soundaryalahari Apartments, Lawsons Bay colony, Visakhapatnam, 530017 MECON, 5th Floor, RTC Complex, Visakhapatnam AP 530020 INDIA [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] linux user No.205042

Then, boot with the disk, log into Linux as root, open the console, goto /boot/grub, run ./install.sh. You may have to change the permissions... Hope this helps! RE: [newbie] boot problem
Use your boot disk to start linux. Run DrakConf/Tools for booting and configure LILO and install it to either your / or your /boot partition. Restart your system. If SystemCommander now does not list 7.2 as a boot option enter the Setup/Add menu and toggle the partition to which you installed Lilo as bootable. Esc to the SysCom main menu and restart your system. You should now be able to boot 7.2 Charles (-: Forever never goes beyond tomorrow. -Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Sam BridgmanSent: Tuesday, December 05, 2000 12:26 PMTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: [newbie] boot problem Hello: Have Linux-Mandrake 7.2, use System Commander 2000 from V-Communication for a multi-boot system with four other operating system, I install 7.2 twice everything whent O. [newbie] Boot problem
I'm new here, so sorry if this repeats any threads. Ok, I have a dual boot W98/Mandrake 7. Lilo defaults to Mandrake, and both exist on the same HD. Everything was fine, but now Mandrake fails to boot, and the following is what seems to be relevant from the boot sequence - after this it just waits for ctrl-alt-del. attempt to access beyond end of device 03:07: rw=0, want=2, limit=0 dev 03:07 blksize=1024 blocknr=1 sector=2 size=1024 count=1 EXT2-fs: unable to read superblock attempt to access beyond end of device 03:07: rw=0, want=33, limit=0 dev 03:07 blksize=1024 blocknr=32 sector=64 size=1024 count=1 isofs_read_super: bread_failed, dev=03:07, iso_blknum=16, block=32 Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:07 W98 still works fine, though I suspect that Norton Systemworks may be partly to blame. Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks anyway Ian

Re: [newbie] Boot problem
I think one gigabyte (i.e. 2 raised to the 30th power) would be 1.074 billion bytes. So if an HD manufacturer did a dishonest thing and reported his disk's capacity as billions of bytes rather than gigabytes base 2, he would be over by about 7%, which is pretty close to what you're seeing (7% of 9 billion is 630 million). MANY manufacturures (?) exagerrate the capacities of their drives by quoting the bare unformatted figure - totally unrealistic, as whatever file system you format a disk with it ALWAYS reduces in size - the larger the disk, the more scary the amount of size you lose. Can't think off the top of my head whether a 1.5GB reduction is reasonable or not - it does sound a little excessive! Martin.

[newbie] Boot problem
I've got two hard drives in my computer -- an 850 meg IDE and a 10.5 GB (some reason it only shows up as 8.5 GB) SCSI drive. I'm booting off my IDE drive, but for some reason the system will NOT boot unless I have the boot disk in the floppy drive (the one I made at install.) The symptoms are this: Black screen with a blinking/flashing "underscore" character ("_") in the upper left corner of the screen. The hardware is as follows: Dual-PPro 200 MHZ in a W6LI Micronics motherboard with 192 MB RAM. SCSI controller is an ABP940-UA (PCI Ultra Narrow.) Video is an S3 Virge DX 4mb PCI video. On-board sound (Vibra 16). IDE drive is a Seagate 850 (Re-labled Conner after Seagate bought Conner.) SCSI is a Seagate full-height 5.25". Please feel free to ask anything else. I've got it set to boot to init level 3 (console, NOT GUI!) I have tried two different monitors -- a "Socos" 14" and a Compaq 15" both SVGA. John
