Yes, during my install-woes I had to do some googling on the matter, and it seems that Radeons are well supported, but Rages aren't : one has to use XFree86-3.6 to get 3D accelerated support, XFree86-4.3 can do 2D only. Furthermore, the ATI page says that the UTAH-project is dormant. [newbie] Error during Install
I have a Dell PC with a PII-333 processor, 384MB RAM, an on-board ATI Rage 3D video card and two 10GB hard drives. Windows 2000 Pro is installed on a partition on the first hard drive and I'm trying to install Mandrake 8.1 on the second hard drive. I chose the auto allocate fuction in the partition section during install. Everything goes fine until it tries to configure X when the following message pops up. Can't call method set_active on an undefined value. There is an OK button available to click on, but no matter how many times I click the OK button, the screen cycles back to this same message. My only option at this point is to manually re-boot the machine. After re-boot, the machine starts in console mode. When I try to startx it won't start. Please help. I'm new. During the initial setup I get an error indicating it cannot uncompress the second stage RAM disk. I press enter and it continues with the installation, however after formatting my partitions I get another error indicating an invalid entry in my hdlist file. I am assuming this is because the RAM disk never actually got created or some such thing. This error forces me to abort the installtion. I suspect a problem with the CD I am installing from, and therefore suspect I may have gotten some bad data on my download, however before I download another 600+ Meg file, does anyone have any other suggestions? -- Well begun is half done. -Aristotle http://nlpagan.net - Registered Linux User 174403 Linux Mandrake 7.2 - Sylpheed 0.4.99 ** http://www.care2.com - when you care **

I have MS and get brain-glitches at times myself. Mostly it's that I'm so tired (all the time) that I can't think clearly--dangerous when working as root! Everybody please be patient with us. -Gary-

Well, I don't see your error (did you attach it?). My advice is to go back from the beginning and try again. A sure bet is to delete the /dir that you untar'd the source to and start over from there, unpacking the source all over again. Sometimes a 'make mrproper' (before (./config) will clean up the source. Sometimes some source won't compile on some hardware. A good clue for this case is if the compile errors out at different places and/or with different error messages. Many compiles really strain the system's cpu/cache/ram so it could be a hardware problem. Even in this case, often just keep trying over and over till the compile is successful.
