The standard that CD manufacturers use to define the readability of CD's
is completely a seperate issue from the standard that cdrom
manufacturers use to write disks. One is one and the other is the
other; to put it another way there is no relation between the burn speed
of a CD and the speed at which it is read. Whenever a CD is burned at
*whatever* speed it should still conform to the universal readability
standards that exist for CD's.

Solved now - it was specific to my desktop, and I had renamed the
installation desktop, copied the whole one from my old installation, then
deleted the files/folders that I thought should not be there. I resolved the
problem by a bit more re-naming, and just copying accross the links that I
really wanted.

Thanks anyway

I copied most of the folders and files (not all) from a backup of my old

copied one that I shouldn't, or failed to copy one that I should have.

I use a mix of both. Some things are easier done by editing config files,
but the problem often is that you don't know which file or where it is. The
gui tools help to do the job, but don't help the learning.

Amendment - it did work on one click earlier, but now doesn't do anything at
all. And the disappearing icons happen after they have been hidden by any
other program - so if I open something minimised only some of the icons
disappear.

It's as though the icons are being drawn on the desktop but not connected to
anything (I'll check permissions once again, but I think they're OK), and not
re-drawn when apps close.

[newbie] Re-install woes - 8.2

2002-11-14 Thread Anne Wilson
Well, I'm back. Mozilla is fine and KMail are working. I've copied back
from my old /home directory and re-set the permissions (which had gone to
root, because of the mountpoint settings of the source). My current problem
is that my desktop fires up fine, but clicking on a link, say, works once,
then from that moment the desktop is frozen - doesn't answer the keyboard at
all. Panel links still work, and if I open, say, KMail, then all the icons
on the desktop disappear.

What on earth have I done? It was fine until I started the copying back.

In the 'welcome to newbie' post you received after subscribing, one
of the first things it says is to post with plain text only. This is
the standard and accepted netiquette practice on any public mailing

Hiya,

It all depends how you partitioned your system in the first place, if
you had a separate partition of /home then you need not format that at
install time and all info in there will be safe.

As for the rest, i dunno..

[newbie] re-install

2001-06-10 Thread johnix

One problem I have ran into when re-installing mandrake 7.2 is that whatever problems
I had with the first install would ocour again when I tried to re-install a second
time.
I am dual booting win95. I found that if I went into dos and typed
fdisk /mbr then did a fresh install it went well. I don't know why but it worked.
Also I had to use text mode as linux or lin4win would give me a message saying my
system resources were low.

This may help someone who is haveing trouble with a re-install or a system with low
resources.

Also I have an SB16 sound card. I could't get it to work as SB16 so I tried Ensonic
soundscape vivo. This worked.

RE: [newbie] re-install

2000-06-03 Thread Christopher M. Kellogg

Hiyas,

You shouldn't need to reinstall. There are applications within Linux that
will allow you to resize existing partitions (anyone mention names, please?)
and you can hot-install almost any application or service from the RPMs on
the CD (or off ftp sites). If you need some help, check out the man pages
for rpm. (Usually rpm -i is sufficient, but there are occasionally details
to be aware of.)

BTW, please change your outgoing mail type to Plain Text in your mail
application, it will help others read your messages.

Hope that helps...

Chris.

Mine is:
1 prim partition = /boot 32M
1 prim partition = / 600 - 800 M
1 swap partition = +/- 256 M
(max)
1 extended LINUX = ( be carefull, use
the LINUX extended, not the dos ext.)
/usr+/- 3 G (the big one)
/usr/local +/- 1 G ( to store own
progs, not destroyed at re-install)
/home +/- 2G (depends of the nbrs of
users)
/var+/- 600 M
/reserved rest (for use later)

Re-install will usually work fine, but note that install will want to see
enough free disk space when it starts. It does not take the overwriting of
the existing files into account.

It looks like that machine has problems. A missed interrupt and hard

Were you using a compressed drive? Did the drive require some sort of
