Yes, but about once a year Sun grabs the OO source back, tarts it up with
some new fonts and such and presents it to the PHB's as the *new* and
*improved* StarOffice ...

am i right about that??

i have the files to install the latest open office, but i haven't done it or
tried it, simply because i have become attached to applix already and don't
feel like having to go thru another conversion. by that i mean that my #1
use for my computer is writing, i am a writer. under windows i used WordPro.
when converting to linux finding a word processor was my greatest need. at
the time i didn't know about open office. i tried applix, star office 5.2,
koffice and abiword. i decided on applix and now all my writing is in that
format.

if you are still looking for something you should check open office. it may
be really good. i think star office is getting better better, and open
office might be even better simply because it is open to anyone to contribute.

it's free and you've nothing to loose.

i'm a bit late on this thread
=)

i've been using Applix for just over a year now. for the most part i love
it. a few bugs, but i've figured out the work arounds.

one disclaimer tho... one thing i don't care about is MS compatability. i
haven't opened a Word file in months, and an X-Hell file doesn't even exist
on my computer, so i can't say just how reliable the MS compatability is.

if you don't mind spending money -- i paid $50 for it, which is about the
limit of what i will pay for software -- i think it's good. of course
StarOffice has gotten much better with the 6beta version. tho i haven't used
it a whole lot, just played with it to see how it had changed.

ps -- there is a review of Applix with screen shots which i wrote on my

Not a bad suite. I use both and prefer StarOffice. I think it handles
M$Office .docs (which everyone else in my building uses ;o( ) with
greater ease. Applixware somethimes chokes on large Excel docs, and I've
yet to successfully open a PowerPoint presentation with any significant
amount of graphics. My personal preference is Staroffice despite some of
its bloat. Mike

Re: [newbie] Applixware and 7.2 / KDE2

2001-06-07 Thread Michael Lewis

I actually got mine fixed. My network card wasn't wasn't working properly
and it was screwing up the software. I replaced the SOHO card with a 3com,
reconfigured the network and it works fine. Apparently, Applix has to be
able to resolve the host before it works properly. Hope this helps.

BTW, the SOHO card is advertized as being supported by Linux, but even the
tulip.c driver that they supply, which you have to compile and install
yourself, does not work. I think I'll make another post regarding this card
specifically, just to let people know.

I've tried it under Gnome, and KDE. I've reinstalled it twice and it just
keeps failing. The first time I installed, I did not opt for the Internet
update. It installed without the usual directory listing in
applications. It was there, just it wasn't listed. I then reinstalled it
selecting to update. It then put it into the directory listing, but still
 did not open word files.

Is anyone else out there using Applixware with KDE2? It seems to work

Hi Evan,
If you don't ask too heavy stuff, you might want to try Abiword. It is a
work in progress, and the result so far I like a lot.
You can get it at http://www.abisource.com

I've used SO for over a year - it does seem bloated, not used applixware, but
have you tried Gnumeric (included with Mandrake 7) and Abiword - free as a
download from Abisource, it's still a work in progress but feels similar to Word
and most features work.

I have been using SO for over a year (even the Win version, before I tried
Linux). I've been using Applixware 5 since February. SO "feels" much larger
and bloated, but does a much better job of reading, converting, and managing
Excel files, especially large ones. Both do a superb job of handling Word
files. Neither seems capable of reading the other's docs, unless they are
saved as Word format, or RTF, or some other common form.
My "guess" is that you'll like whichever you get used to. They both create
their own documents very capably and offer a variety of tools to help you get
 work done.

Since the rap against it would seem to be "annoyances" as opposed to
functionality, I guess it becomes a question of whether one wishes to part
with US$99-$199 to rid oneself of the annoyances. SO 5.x does typically take
an awful long time to launch even on a PIII 450 w/192M of RAM. It reminds me
in a way of M$ Works in that it's not just a suite of separate apps, but a
gigantic app w/numerous "parts". Despite its admitted annoyances (like
"bloat"), I'd have to say I rather like SO 5.x, though I enjoy using the beta
of Applixware 5.0 also. I guess I should try WordPerfect 2000 Suite when it's
 fully released ;o)

Oops! I hope nobody was annoyed at my comment. If you're on a limited budget, Star
Office
does just fine. For that matter, abisuite (which comes with the Mandrake 7 distrib)
seems to
be pretty decent, and if you want to pop over to www.linuxberg.com, you can find all
the apps
you can think of - organized into neat sections. There have been several instances
where
I've spent a lot of money on something and then gone and downloaded some free or
shareware
product that does the same thing, often better than the product I paid for. However,
there
are also times when the old saying holds true; "you get what you pay for"

If you need to share files with other people, or even just email an attachment written
with
your word processor that others will be reading, saving to some foreign file format or
even
'rich text format' will render your hard worked on document either incorrectly
formatted when
it's opened, or completely unreadable.
