Re: [Newbie]XFree86 and ATI Xpert128 Video Card

2002-03-06 Thread Lionel Lecoq

Hi,
I don't know what Marc will answer you (note he is an expert and I am just a newbie)
However, I'll tell you what I would do: I would get a newer version of my distro
backup my stuff
and my settings and reinstall the whole thing. In my opinion one saves oneself a lot
of time and
troubles that way (OK it is not the most glorious approach...)

I guess you did not backup your configurataion (.Xclients, .Xclients-default etc...)
you could try puting exec kde in .Xclients-default or creating a ~/.xinitrc with the
same

Yes you are speaking about the frame buffer but I believe there is a difference
between it with
linux and it with X (please someone correct me if I am wrong I never got quite clear
on that) you
can certainly try Driver "fbdev" in your XF86Config but without garantee...

Re: [Newbie]MOUSE & KEYBOARD

2002-03-08 Thread Lionel Lecoq

In case you are REALLY using 4.1.0 then you are mailing us the wrong config file. The
one you sent
is a 3.3.6 file and is incompatible with X.4.x.x
You should have a XF86Config-4 and that's the right one
Section pointer and section keyboard identify the file as a 3.3.6 file and explain
your problems
** what did you do with you honest to good XF86Config-4 :^) **
I guess it will be back to running Xconfigurator...
in 4.x.x you have something like that for mouse and keyboard (please don't use dumbly
this is just
an example)
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Keyboard0"
Driver "keyboard"
Option "XkbLayout" "us"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
Option "Protocol" "PS/2"
# Option "Emulate3Buttons" "on"
# Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection
Good luck

2002-03-10 Thread Lionel Lecoq

You are not giving us much info. A post of your XF86Config-4 might help. Knowing which
card you
have also...
I can try to guess:
do you have
Load "dri" # Direct rendering infrastructure
in your section module

do you also have
Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSection

If you are using the vesa driver, it is unaccelerated...

Re: [Newbie]S3 Savage 2000 questions

2002-03-11 Thread Lionel Lecoq

Theoretically you should get acceleration...
try
DefaultDepth 16
in your screen section and
Depth 16
in your display subsection
I don't know whether this will help in your case, but some drivers only accelerate 16
or 32 depth
(don't ask me why...)
Lionel
PS it is considered bad style to send html formated mail, it eats up a lot of
bandwidth and people
with normal modems are penalised (don't be surprised if you get some more sanguine
protests from
some other list participants, just go over your mail settings for the next post...)

Re: [Newbie]Regarding XF86Config-4

2002-03-14 Thread Lionel Lecoq

man startx (or man X I don't remember) state quite clearly the search sequence for a
config file.
First comes the one specified in the command (incase one specifies one) then in the
home directory
(RH added one there in one of its incarnations, which threw me for a loop since I was
hacking the
one in /etc/X11...) then the one in /etc/X11 etc...
HOWEVER, I would do X -version, NOT XFree86 -version: XFree86 being 4.0.3 You will
always get
4.0.3 whether you are running 3.3.6 -which I suspect- or 4.0.3...

Re: [Newbie]no full screen on a Winbook J1

2002-03-16 Thread Lionel Lecoq

This is not much info... your XF86Config-4 (assuming you are really running 4.0.3
-which is what
you get with RH7.1 in adition to 3.3.6) and a log would help
what you see with 800x600 and 640x480 is the *normal* display on a lcd screen when you
are running
at a lower resolution. I don't know your machine but assuming the screen is 1024x768
then you have
112 pixel not addressed right and left of the 800x600 display. since 800x600 works I
assume that
there is not that much missing to get 1024x768, I suspect you don't need chassing sync
specs and
the like.
First check that you are really running 4.0.3 by doing X -version (you can also chek
the log, it's
printed on top, the log is /var/log/XFree86.0.log)
If for some strange reason you were to be running 3.3.6 then post /etc/X11/XF86Config
otherwise
post /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

Re: [Newbie]Problem -- "X Server: None"

2002-03-17 Thread Lionel Lecoq

I am under the very strong impression that XF86_SVGA is an X 3.3.6 only server (as
opposed to
driver)
with a Radeon I suspect also very strongly that you would do better (in short get any
result worth
mentioning) with X 4.2

Re: [Newbie]Problems starting "startx"

2002-03-17 Thread Lionel Lecoq

For your information: you seem to be running X 3.3.6
For any help one would need to have a few more info: XF86Config and a log
Are you sure you want to keep using 3.3.6 as opposed to a newer X (for instance 4.2)
I don't know Debian so I might not be of much help there...

Re: [Newbie]Help with multiple monitors

2002-03-18 Thread Lionel Lecoq

Your problem may be more basic than working with 2 monitors (there I cann't help)
It is quite possible that startx is attempting to run X 3.3.6 while XFree86 is 4.x.x
(normally 4.1
with RH 7.2)
to check what is happening do X -version (NOT XFree86 -version)
or after attempting to use startx look at the log /var/log/XFree86.0.log
once you are sure of what you are running then post the config file and the log
Note I doubt 3.3.6 runs 2 monitors (I am not sure though...)
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 is the config for 4.x.x in RH 7.2 (XF86Config is for 3.3.6)

RE: [Newbie]Problem -- "X Server: None"

2002-03-18 Thread Lionel Lecoq

You should have stayed with RH 7.2 (I hope I don't start a flame war here ;^)
and upgraded with the RPM to X 4.2...
Anyhow just a short explaination about servers and drivers and the difference between
X3.x.x and
X4.x.x
In X 3.x.x you had different servers for different video adapters (the were a couple
of *standard*
ones like the XF86_SVGA)
In X 4.x.x you have only ONE server: XFree86 and different drivers for different video
adapters.
There ias actually a RADEON one as well as a couple of others for ATI (ati, r128
etc...)
If I were you I would install RH 7.2 (just because I am more familiar with it than
with Debian,
not because it is better...) and specify a normal console login rather than an
interactive one.
Theoretically, it should automatically select the radeon driver when you configure X
and it should
configure you to run 4.1 (that's what came with it last time I installed it...)
You should then, just to check run
X -version
It should give you 4.1
If not then you should go to /etc/X11 rename X to X3.3.6 or whatever and create X as a
symlink to
/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86
That will give you 4.1 when you do startx
Then run startx
If anything goes wrong then post both your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and your log
(/var/log/XFree86.0.log)
and a slighly more detailled description of you video adapter (model number for
instance the
couple of letters following the numbers are also quite relevant..)
Then and only then will the people here know enough to help you...

Re: [Newbie]Problem with Ati Mach64 and LCD unspecified monitor

2002-03-18 Thread Lionel Lecoq

An *horrible* suggestion...
usually RH 7.x installs both 4.x.x and 3.3.6
In case it did for you have you tried using 3.3.6?
two possibilities:
1. for config I believe you can use a parameter (-prefer3 or something like that try
man your
config prog)
2. backup your /etc/X11/X by renaming it X4 for instance and recreate X as a symlink
to an
*appropriate* 3.3.6 server (at worse the *universal* XF86_SVGA (it should also be in
/usr/X11R6/bin at worst use locate...) then /etc/X11/XF86Config will be the file to
hack

An interesting place to look would also be http://www.linux-laptop.net/
good luck

Re: [Newbie]Problem with Ati Mach64 and LCD unspecified monitor

2002-03-18 Thread Lionel Lecoq

Sorry but RH 7.x and I believe a couple of other distributions install both 3.3.6 and
4.x.x They
set the one or the other active depending on whether the video adapter is accelerated
or not in
4.x.x
I agree with you that this confuses many people as you can see in this list with them
mentioning
XF86_SVGA and X 4.x in the same sentence.
However, it does allow one to fine tune on older equipment (in my case, for instance,
I kept 3.3.6
on an old laptop because the card was not accelerated in 4.1, I can tell you that with
kde it made
a lot of difference in the response time... In my newer desktop I do run 4.1, having
the same
distro on both does simplify matters)

Ted,
You are expecting a lot from a newbie...
this is why in another post I advised to just reinstall the distro cleanly and start
from there.
Unless the man has a radeon or one of those just released video adapters he can live
quite well
with what comes with the distro. After a few months of getting comfortable with his new
environment he can always decide to upgrade and do it understanding what he is doing
Not everybody has your experience ;^)
Actually (no flame war intended :-) I don't believe switching to freeBSD or from RH to
any other
linux distro will help much. There is a learning curve involved and the more
reasonable among us
post their config and log and don't moan ;~}
cheers

but in my environment(i.e. RH 7.2) it is /etc/X11/x which should be a symlink to
/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86

Re: [Newbie]Re: Problem with Ati Mach64 and LCD unspecified monitor

2002-03-19 Thread Lionel Lecoq

Have a look at http://www.xfree86.org/4.1.0/Status6.html#6
this is the status of the support for ati for 4.1 and 3.3.6
basically your card should be supported by both version (OK there are these ominous
two letters
after the mach64...)
Theoretically the ati driver should solve your problem in 4.x and (unknown to me)
there seem to be
a way to use an ati driver for XF86_SVGA. Anyhow, the XF86_SVGA IS accelerated,
possibly you have
to specify it in the config file...
Alzeimer strikes again and I cannot remember whether you posted both your XF86Config
resp.
XF86Config-4 and a log (/var/log/XFree86.0.log would do)

Re: [Newbie]no full screen on a Winbook J1

2002-03-19 Thread Lionel Lecoq

I had a look at http://www.xfree86.org/4.1.0/Status33.html#33 (list of trident cards
supported)
and did not see a cyberblade II however there is a cyberblade i1 could one of the I be
a 1 (one)?

A log would help finding out what X recognises.
For instance it may help to specify the video RAM
available specially because I had a look at the specs of your machine and noticed it
uses some of
the main memory as a buffer, this may keep the config program from finding out what is
available...

Another possibility (I like it less): there seem to be a download on the trident site
(seems to be
a 3.3.6 server...) look at http://www.tridentmicro.com then select Drivers then
download then
blade3d
as one says in these case without any warantee...

Re: [Newbie]Default Video Mode

2002-03-22 Thread Lionel Lecoq

I personally have only one resolution in my modes line, that way I am not bothered by
these
problems. However, if you want to keep them all then the first one should be the
default, change
the order accordingly and it should do.
By the way, why do I have only one? Because, at least on my mobo, X selects the
largest resolution
as the virtual resolution and with any other resolution I must pan to get to the part
of the
window which are not showing on the display...

RE: [Newbie]How to configure X on OpenBSD 2.9 Help!

2002-03-22 Thread Lionel Lecoq

Sorry about the empty answer, it's late and my fingers don't obey that well...
Please instead of panicking post your XF86Config (in linux one finds it in /etc/X11
possibly not
in OpenBSD in that case I would look first in the home directory then in /usr/X11R6)
and your log
(usually /var/log/XFree86.0.log)
also do an
X -version
just to be sure of what you are running.
I am not very knowledgeable with OpenBSD and don't know whether it creates a few
XF86Config like
some other distro...
You have a readme for OpenBSD on the www.XFree86.org page (select the docs and follow
links)
If you want to regenerate your XF86Config, they advise xf86cfg but since you have
problems
you could also try X -configure
personnaly I would try to hack the file myself, it is not that difficult. Main issue:
if you have
more than one such file be sure you are hacking the one X uses (it should be
identified in the
log)

Re: [Newbie]Problems with SiS 620

2002-03-24 Thread Lionel Lecoq

Difficult to help without seeing your XF86Config resp XF86Config-4 file
The log complains about the lack of a display subsection with depth 16 in your screen
section
I would be surprised if you did not have one. However, check whether you have a
default depth of
16 and no display subsection with a depth of 16. If this is the case just add one
(copy another
and change the depth...)

Re: [Newbie]!! WILL $PayPal$ FOR XF 4.2.0 HELP !!

2002-03-30 Thread Lionel Lecoq

Keep your cash for better things and remember it's all about learning how things
work...
now the way you present things makes it rather difficult to help you:
1. XFree86 -configure does generate XF86Config.new and puts it someplace where it
won't wipe out
anything...
It is to you to rename the file to XF86Config resp. XF86Config-4 and move it where it
belongs
(usually /etc/X11/...) unhappily these things depend on your distribution, and not
knowng which
one you are using keeps one from being more detailled
2. try to run startx just with your current config, this will give you a log in
/var/log/XFree86.0.log.
This log will tell you which XF86Config[-4] X is using
3. post the XF86Config[-4], your log, the name of the distribution you are using

As an extra comment, I don't like your XF86Config.new file: too many things are
missing there. Not
knowing whether you moved it so that X uses it I feel any more detailled comments are
unnecessary...

Re: [Newbie]XF86 4.2.0 /etc/ttys ?

2002-04-02 Thread Lionel Lecoq

Can't help you with your etc/ttys
As far as Ctrl-Alt-F# this is the way to switch between consoles when you are in X:
if you are alone in X (i.e. only one tty console and one X open then Ctrl-Alt-F1 will
bring you
back to the standard tty console and from there Ctrl-Alt-F7 back to your X console.
If you have more consoles open (two logins and two X) then Ctrl-Alt-F2 gets you to the
second tty
console and Ctrl-Alt-F8 to the second X console...

just an aside if X is not running then you switch between consoles with Alt-F#
As far as the wrapper is concerned, it is a security feature so that you don't need to
be SU in
order to start an X session. If you are alone on your machine you may want to ignore
it (at your
own risk) some distributions don't use it, some others do...

Just in case you specified the fonts in your file section (it should not be necessary
there are
decent defaults) you SHOULD have a fixed font as the first one in the list (misc would
do)

Re: [Newbie]a problem with a S3 video card

2002-04-05 Thread Lionel Lecoq

One would need to know which card you have and you should post both your
XF86Config[-4] and log
(/var/log/XFree86.0.log would do...)
You can check yourself whether your card is supported by going to www.xfree86.org,
selecting
Support, Documentation and Resources
Then
XFree86-4.2.0 Current Release documentation
Then
Driver Status for XFree86[tm] 4.2.0
and finally
28. S3

Re: Rép. : [Newbie]Re: a problem with a S3 video card

2002-04-09 Thread Lionel Lecoq

You do realise that:
you are specifying display modes in your screen display subsection which don't fit
with those of
your monitor...
In your monitor section you are giving a specific synch instead of a synch range which
is probably
why you are getting:
(II) S3VIRGE(0): Not using default mode "1024x768" (hsync out of range)

I would
1. remove whatever you have as far as modelines in your monitor section (the defaults
should work)
2. add the mode 1024x768 in your screen display subsection -you need only keep the one
for depth
16 since this is your default depth - you can also restrict yourself to one resolution
to simplify
your life,
I suspect this might already get you going if not re-post mainly your config file...

Re: [Newbie]GeForce2 on ASUS and XFree86-4.2.0

2002-04-10 Thread Lionel Lecoq

I don't know much about FreeBSD, However I would add
DefaultDepth16 # or 24 whichever you need
to the screen section, and in the corresponding subsection display
Modes "1024x768" # or any resolution you need
hope that will help (but may not suffice...) you may also want to download the nvidia
driver from
their site..

Re: [Newbie]Trident TGUI9680, Samsung SyncMaster 3 and XFree4

2002-04-12 Thread Lionel Lecoq

Don't know whether this will help you much...
1. do you have RH 7.2 beta (Roswell I believe) I had the problem you describe when I
was using it
before the release version (Enigma) came out. Switching to the release version got rid
of the
problem...
2. I don't let Xconfigurator test my configuration (there is a yes/no option for the
test) because
more often that not it bums out and I have a non functioning configuration.
So run Xconfigurator without the test and if you still have problem post your
XF86Config-4 (I
assume you are really running 4.1, check with X -version because RH sometimes enable
3.3.6 instead
of 4.1 if it thinks the graphic card is better supported by the older version. This is
a common
problem with older equipment...)
If it turns out you are running 3.3.6 then it is XF86Config which is the *right*
config. file

Re: [Newbie]rh 7.2/XFree86 diamond viper card and frozen display

2002-04-12 Thread Lionel Lecoq

The config file you sent IS a 3.3.6 config file not a 4.1.0 one (recognisable by the
existence of
a "section keyboard" this has been replaced in 4.x.x by a "section InputDevice")
run X -version to check what you are running.
If you are really running 4.x.x then post your XF86Config-4

Re: [Newbie]hello, i'm new to newbies and have a monitor question

2002-04-21 Thread Lionel Lecoq

If the config program identify your card as s3virge and your card is not a s3 virge
card then the
problem is not at the monitor...
What we need (and you don't give it in you follow-up posts) is:
graphic card, monitor (remember the only important thing for the monitor are the synch
figures...)
your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file and your /var/log/XFree86.0.log file
from then on one can try to help you with some chance of success...

RE: [Newbie]Dell Inspiron 8200, Geforce 2 Go, FreeBSD, and Mindless Evil.

2002-04-24 Thread Lionel Lecoq

Sorry for not having followed up but I don't know nvidia cards and drivers.
I won't be able to help you with point 1 either because I am not sure where FreeBSD
does it's call
to the desktop (in RH 7.x it's in .Clients -or more exactly in the file pointed to by
.Clients I
don't have the exact name because I am not on my mobo...- It can also be in .xinitrc
-I hope my
memory is OK as to the spelling. Alzeimer you know...
As to point 2. X is very likely using 640x480 which is usually bad news because in
most cases it
means that the card has not been recognised and that the vga (dumb) driver is being
used...
I do think posting both your XF86Config and the log would help...

Re: [Newbie]Re: Rd Hat Video card problems

copying can be done with mcopy (look at man mcopy) there is also mdir etc... so
transfering
between the two differently formatted HD is no problem.
However, I would coldly upgrade to RH 7.2 (if your line is fast enough to download the
600+ MB)
That way you bypass the kernel and other such issues...

or you can change the runlevel to 3 in /etc/inittab in order to have a standard login

Hi,
Have a look at www.xfree86.org > Support,Documentation and resources > XFree86.4.x.x
online
documentation > Drivers status for... and then S3
You will find out that the card is supported under some restrictions
If, in your case it is not, you should have no problems with v3, try using the SVGA
driver...
posting both XF86Config file and log (/var/log/XFree86.0.log) would allow people to
help.

Are you using an interactive login? If so disactivate it and try tuning your

one must

Hi,
1. no HTML on this list, it's not nice for those with a slow connection to the web...
2. I regret to have to say that you seem to have a mess:
The X server: XF86_SVGA is an X 3.3.6 server (as opposed to drivers which are what X
4.1.0 uses)

Cure:
1. find out whether you are running X 4.1.0 or X 3.3.6 X -version will tell you
2. if you are using X 4.1.0 then the config file is most likely /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
3. on the other hand if you are using X 3.3.6 then you want probably
/etc/X11/XF86Config
4. Your chip set is supported you should use google on this list because there were
some
peculiarities (not having one I did not register them) and some solutions, possibly
you may have
to upgrade to X 4.2.0
5. I do believe that 3.3.6 is out of the picture...

once you have cleared things up post again if it does not work...

This looks as if you were using a lower resolution than the "official" resolution of

Remember that LCD screen have only one physical resolution. Using a lower resolution
results in

There is a possibility that your card be not supported by 4.x.x look at
www.xfree86.org > Support, Documentation and Resources > XFree86-4.2.0 Current Release
documentation > Driver Status for XFree86[tm] 4.2.0 > S3
There was a post on that subject a week or two ago (use google on the list)
In some cases people ended up downgrading to v3.3.6 in order to have acceleration
In any case, with v 4.x.x, the vesa driver (regretably not accelerated) might solve
your problem
better than fbdev...

Re: [Newbie]S3 Video Chip: Trio3D/2X (362/368)

2002-05-04 Thread Lionel Lecoq

In X 3.x.x you have to have different servers for differents video adapters. i.e. the
server only
has a driver for a specific type of card but for the SVGA which is a more or less
"universal"
server driver combination.
in v4.x.x you have only one server (XFree86) which can use different driver modules
(the S3,
s3virge, vesa, ati, etc. drivers) This is a cleaner implementation.
If I were you, I would try first the X 4.x.x version of X with the driver which is
recommended
(s3virge, which is to be specified in the device section)
If the results were to be unsatisfactory, I would downgrade to X 3.x.x (usually 3.3.6)
using the
SVGA (i.e. XF86_SVGA) and wait for a newer release of X 4.x.x with (hopefully) a
usable driver for
your card.
I myself have an S3 aurora64+ on a laptop and downgrading gave the best results (the
card was
supported by neither the s3 nor the s3virge driver, worked well but unaccelerated with
vesa, and
worked very well and accelerated with X 3.3.6 and SVGA)

Re: [Newbie]Problem with XF86_SVGA in RedHat 7.2

2002-05-05 Thread Lionel Lecoq

Very strange: your system is trying to start X 3.3.6...
did you keep an old version of startx?
/etc/X11/X is usually a symlink to the server, check to what it is pointing. for
X4.x.x it should
be pointing to /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86
For X 3.3.6 it should be pointing to XF86_SVGA which you seem not to have.
You may want to try changing the link to XFree86 adapting the XF86Config-4 (if you
have one)
otherwise checking the format of XF86Config (one of the differences between an X3
config and an X4
config is that the former has a "keyboard" and a "pointer" section while the later has
two "input
device" sections)

Simply removing virtual may suffice.
NOTE: specifying more than one resolution in the mode line of the display subsection
results in
the highest resolution being the "virtual" resolution. This is why I only specify one

Re: [Newbie]Video Woes

2002-05-13 Thread Lionel Lecoq

Look back in this list, here is a tip given by Dustin Cavanaugh:

I've got a motherboard with SiS video, audio, e'net, and modem built in.
The video shares main memory. I believe the video is 650, but may be 630.
The o/s is Mandrake 8.1. When installing the o/s I answered "no" to test
the X config (it always fails to return from the demo screen). Once I start
the o/s and login, its fine. Never got the audio to work though.

Under 8.2 and Redhat 7.x, the o/s fails to correctly determine the
available memory and I get a kernel panic, so I start with "linux mem=192M"
and everything works, including the audio.

There was also a web site given but I don't remember which one, just use google on the
list...

look in your XF86Config if you have a virtual resolution defined somewhere and comment

the "modes" line of the display subsection leave only the resolution you want (the

Re: [Newbie]cannot change virtual screensize: XF86Config "Virtual" line ignored

2002-05-15 Thread Lionel Lecoq

I was not speaking of the "modeline" you find in the monitor section, X can find out
what is valid
by itself (usually:^) -i.e. you can usually remove or comment out all "modeline" lines
there- but
from the "modes" line in the display subsection of the screen section. There, it
suffices to
specify what you want in the subsection which has the depth given in the
"DefaultDepth" line of
the screen section...

Re: [Newbie]RedHat 7.1

I have read somewhere on this list that you should use X.4.2 for radeons that would
mean that RH
7.3 would be the distro to use (do you have a line fast enough to download it?)
downloading and installing 4.2 would be also a possibility but if you are a newbie

Re: [Newbie]What to do when startx returns ...

2002-05-22 Thread Lionel Lecoq

I agree with the answer. what happens is that in your screen section you don't have a
display
subsection which is usable.
The cause can be in that section, for instance you specify default depth of 24 and
you don't have
a corresponding display subsection.
More likely the problem lies with you device section and either an unrecognised or
wrongly
recognised card. Check that and the log (/var/log/XFree86.0.log)

Re: [Newbie]Changing Monitors

Unplug it and plug the new one in...:^)

(if your set-up is similar to mine linux checks for new hardware at boot time)
If your new monitor has lower sync figures than the old one (should theoretically not
be the case)
then hack your XF86Config before going into X (i.e. switch temporarily to a non
interactive login
and start X with startx until everything is fine...)

If you have RH 7.2 why don't you install it. The whole installation is straight
forward (I am
afraid there won't be much to learn unless you have the "luck" to have an unsupported
card)
I assume you logged-off and logged back in and found the same problem? I also assume
you don't
have an interactive loggin since X would actually already be running when you type
startx...
Also you can run X on different consoles but must give it a chance by specifying
startx -- :1

Posting your XF86Config (in case you run 3.3.6) resp. XF86Config-4 (in case you are
using 4.x.x)
might be useful
assuming you are running 4.x.x (find out by either typing X -version or looking at the
top of your
log: /var/log/XFree86.0.log) then the mouse config is in the corresponding "input
device section"
you can also give a look at www.linux-laptop.net you might find the information for
your machine
there...

Re: [Newbie]'No screens found'

2002-06-09 Thread Lionel Lecoq

It usually means that in your screen section one of these problems occurs:
1. the device does not exist (is not recognised) then the problem is in the device
section,
usually no appropriate driver has been found.
2. the monitor does not exist (is not recognised)
3. there is no display subsection corresponding to your default depth (with usable
modes line)
you can get more info from /var/log/XFree86.0.log

Posting your XF86Config (resp. XF86Config-4), your log
and infos about your hardware (graphic card, monitor etc.) might help us help you...

Re: [Newbie]RAM flooded

2002-06-10 Thread Lionel Lecoq

Once again someone forgets the poor owners of (actually not that much) older
mainboards which
cannot cache more than a (for today) modest amount of memory. Adding RAM to such
systems slow them
down rather than speed them up...

Re: [Newbie]Change to TFT Monitor

2002-06-10 Thread Lionel Lecoq

If you have a graphic login, I would switch to a console login, save my XF86Config
then shut down,
install the new monitor, login and run XFree86 -configure as root then move and rename
the
XF86Config.new which was created to /etc/X11 where it belongs. If it does not give you
what you
want I would use the old config to adapt the new one keeping only the monitor and
screen sections
of the new one...

Re: [Newbie]Documentation to do with how XF86Config & XF86Config-4 files

2002-06-10 Thread Lionel Lecoq

I am afraid the XF86Config-4 files are only supplied by a couple of distributions (RH
for
instance) because they provide BOTH 3.3.6 and 4.x.x. As a consequence it is not a
standard and is
probably only documented (if at all) in those distributions.
As an aside, I am surprised to find out that The files in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11 are used:
on one of my PC I am running RH 7.1 with both 3.3.6 and 4.x.x (depending on the user
id, with
3.3.6 I get acceleration not with 4.x.x -its an old PC) in my case, I doubt very much
that
anything else than what is in /etc/X11 is used...
Anyhow, If you are using only one version why not copy the relevant file onto the
other.

Re: [Newbie]I upgraded to 4.2.0 and my resolution still doesn't work...

2002-06-11 Thread Lionel Lecoq

You go into your /etc/X11/XF86Config (assuming mandrake does not use
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4
otherwise hack the latter)
There you will find a screen section which has a default depth line and a few display
subsections
You can set the default depth to what you would wish to have (I suspect 24)
then you set the resolution in the display subsection with that depth for instance:
Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768"
EndSubSection
Hope that helps
Lionel

Re: [Newbie]Documentation to do with how XF86Config & XF86Config-4 files

2002-06-11 Thread Lionel Lecoq

The reasonable way to find out which version of X you are running is to
either do X -version
or look in the log (/var/log/XFree86.0.log)
Once you know what you are running, assuming you have both 3.3.6 and 4.x.x then you
can switch
from the one to the other by changing /etc/X11/X according to the description of RH
you mention,
i.e. if you run 3.3.6 and want to run 4.x.x then rename your /etc/X11/X in order to
have a backup
and recreate an /etc/X11/X as a symlink to /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86
