[newbie-it] differenza kernel

2002-01-22 Per discussione Rodolfo Colombo

Ciao a tutti

reiser ?
devo nel caso usare uno degli altri kernel 2.2.19-19mdklinus o
2.2.19-19mdksecure ?
che differenza c'è tra questi?

ciao e grazie Rodolfo

[newbie-it] Non leggo i file di testo!

this accurtly then I can completely remove the need of Windows. Also
there some kind of Term Emulator I can run? I need to attach to a unix

mandrake rpms load icons or put the programs on menus unless they are
designed to run from console. Other rpms may or may not work, but rpm
protects against installing programs conflicting with those already
installed.

With dozens of vendors and thousands of program writers, it is
surprising that most programs do instll and work.

For MS Office files, you can use StarOffice which will handle them
mostly correctly. Some others will as well, like HAncom Office; however

be advised that license agreements generally prohibit reverse
engineering for the purpose of importing data and as soon as UCITA
passes in Washington State, Microsoft will have the full force and
effect of law in those agreements--probably the end of compatibility
forever.

When you find the executable in the directory (and they should generally

install to /opt/(packagename) if they are compliant with the Filesystem
Huerarchical Standard) You can make that directory path and filename
into a command line for the icon you can create by right-clicking on the

desktop. Further, inn the process of that icon creation, you can link
the application to specific mimetypes (like soffice for .doc files).

The basic primers you seek are right on your system if you elected to
install documentation--

configured Bastille. Do you think this might be the problem ? If not, do
you recall which Bastille setting gave you trouble ?

IIRC, there is a question in the Interactive Bastille setup that says Would
you like to set a default-deny on TCP Wrappers and xinetd? Set this to
  'No'.

I gave it a shot, but still no Gnome sounds.

Try running /usr/sbin/UndoBastille to undo Bastille's changes. I don't know how
clean this undo process is, so you may need to do a fresh reinstall of Mandrake
(since I don't know where this particular setting is held) to remove it. The
next time you run InteractiveBastille, select 'No' for the question. It worked
for me.

Out of interest, what is the connection between TCP Wrappers/xinetd
and Gnome sounds ? Intuitively, they seem unrelated (given the little
 understanding I have of each).

I don't understand it much myself. I was lucky enough to find the root of the
problem only after some weeks of agonising trial-and-error. I assume that the
setting blocks ports/sockets that EsounD requires.

On a slightly different note, each time I try a suggested action to
re-configure some aspect of LM, if the expected effects of the change
aren't immediately apparent, I have been logging out and then logging
back in. If the expected changes are still not apparent, I try shutting
down the machine and re-booting. This habit is essentially a hangover
from Windows, which seemed to require a re-boot whenever any significant
system configuration was performed. Are such actions merely voodoo under
LM (as I hope), or do certain configuration changes require
 re-logins/re-boots.

GNU/Linux only really needs to be rebooted when the core kernel is changed
(modules don't need a reboot). There are commands to restart just about anything
on its own. Some changes need a logout and re-login to come into effect. For
major or core changes, I make it a habit to reboot my machine. For a non-expert,
this is far cleaner and simpler, and is less likely to cause unexpected problems
down the track.

Re: [newbie] Security and services that are running?

2002-01-22 Per discussione Derek Jennings

As already advised by others just enable the firewall you find in your
Mandrake Control Centre, then visit http://scan.sygatetech.com/ to test it.

The good news is that now you are using Linux, and are using Sylpheed as your
email client, you will never get an E-mail borne virus, you will never have
to worry about accidentally executing an .exe e-mail attachment, and any
determined attack on your computer is unlikely to succeed.

If you wanted to get really obsessive about security, there are a number of
applications which you might like to play with.

For example :-
Portsentry will add any IP address which tries to scan your ports to an
'ignore' list so there is no way they can get any further.

Logcheck will scan your system logs for messages from your firewall, or
perish the thought 'unauthorised actions' within your computer and send you a
daily e-mail summary.

There are also any number of Firewall products to play with. The tiny
firewall supplied on LM8.1 does a perfectly good job, but if you want to
start opening up ports and reconfiguring its behaviour it is not very
flexible.
Interactive-Bastille supplied with LM8.1 will allow you to be more flexible,
and also tightens up security around your computer in other ways.

vi is a console based text editor... but since it is not the easiest thing
for a newbie to use, I suggest you do this.

If you open your konqueror file manager and select 'ViewShow hidden Files'
you will see a whole lot of files appear in your home directory. These files
all begin with a '.'

Two of those files control your 'environment' as a user. These are
.bash_profile and .bashrc
Any command entered in these files will be executed at startup of your user.
It does not matter which one you use to enter your keyboard command, so let
us assume you want to edit .bashrc

Select it with konqueror file manager and right click on it
Select 'Open withText editor'

put the command you wish to execute at user login at the bottom of the file
and save. A backup called .bashrc~ will be created automatically.

Thats all there is to it.

If you want to have a command executed at system start for all users the file
to edit is /etc/profile or /etc/rc.local
These are system files so your user does not have authority to change them
(unlike Windows, Linux has security), so to change these files you must do so
as user root. There is no need to actually log on as user root (logging on as
root is not encouraged in the linux world), just open your kmenu and select
'ApplicationsFile ToolsFile Manager(Super User mode)
after giving the root password you can then browse and edit files as root.

(Warning- unwise editing of system files could seriously screw up your
system)

You will soon learn that absolutlely everything about setting up a Linux
system can be done by editing text files. For many functions there are nice
user friendly GUI's, but all they do is edit these files. So when you ask a
question some people will come back and say 'use this Gui', while others will
say 'edit this file'

Have fun

KDE and GNOME are GUI desktops or desktop managers (I think WindowMaker
is also -- there are a bunch of them IceWM, Blacksomething, ...).

If you're from the Windows world and remember dos, think of dos as
command line Linux and KDE or GNOME as Windows.

I think there is a little more to them than just front ends to the
command line, but I guess that depends on your perspective.

KDE is commonly thought to be the most newbie friendly and most Windows
like for a user migrating from Windows.

GNOME is somewhat similar, but I like KDE better than GNOME.

Both KDE and GNOME are resource hungry, (I needed 256 MB of memory to
get KDE performance (with a 2.2.19 kernel) similar to Windows 95 with 64
MB). The other desktop managers generally have advantages in terms of
speed and less resource usage.

Some desktop managers have the look and feel of other known operating
systems, so you might like one of them better. (Other desktops are just
different.)

I don't think you should learn them all, but you may want to spend a
little time experimenting with them all to see which you like best.

In general, KDE and GNOME applications will run under the other
desktops. (KDE, like GNOME, has some behind the scenes interprogram
communication / automation features (dcop, kdcop for kde) -- I don't
know if these work under the other desktops.

 8.1/RPMS/kernel-2.4.8-34.1mdk.i586.rpm

I thought I seen on this list 2.4.10

Generally it's Mandrake's policy (as with other distros) to only
issue bug fix or security updates for already released versions.
kernel-2.4.8-34.1mdk was a security update.

If you want to use a newer kernel, d/l the latest cooker version
from the cooker mirrors. (read the 'Warning' on this page)
 http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/cookerdevel.php3

The cooker kernels are stable kernels, but you should install them
with 'rpm -ivh' so as not to mess with your existing kernel. The ready
made rpm will install the kernel to /boot, make the proper links, edit
lilo.conf and run lilo for you. On reboot the new kernel will be an
option, your existing kernel will still be the default. You can make
sure this has happened by running 'lilo as root. If you see the new
kernel as an option, and there are no error messages, then ...

Choose the new kernel and run it for a while. You'll probly
experience no problems, and can then make the cooker kernel the default
if you want. I'd also suggest you lurk for a while on the cooker
mailing list, or read the recent archive at
 http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=mandrake-cooker
Please don't post questions to the cooker list tho. It's for developer
discussions, not support or non-development comments.

I use Buffalo/Melco wireless cards myself, but I have certainly read of
people using Linksys with no problems.

just make sure you have the wireless tools rpm loaded.
Mandrake should auto detect your card, but then you need to set it up and
tell it the wireless group name (essid) and the encryption key.

You can do that using the command iwconfig, for example

iwconfig eth0 essid my_group key s:mykey_in_ascii

That command was all I needed to get my wireless card working.
Once it is working just put that command in /etc/rc.local

If you have trouble consult the PCMCIA page at sourceforge
http://sourceforge.net/projects/pcmcia-cs/ there is a very good HOWTO and a
mailing list which covers wireless devices like the Linksys.

A useful little tool you might like is korinoco. It puts a little icon in
your KDE start bar showing you wireless signal quality. It even draws little
graphs for you. There is a page on it at www.sourceforge.com

[newbie] Passthru Printing from Unix server to Linux Konsole

2002-01-22 Per discussione JOHN HEMMER

Hello,

Running under Mandrake 7.0 Linux version 2.2.14-15 mdKsecure,
I am using a Konsole Session to telnet to a Unix Server. I am
attempting to print a file from the Unix system to my Linux
system printer 'lp0' by sending the file to the Konsole display
and redirecting it from the display to the printer. I do this
by putting the the escape sequences ESC[5i before and ESC[4i
after the text being 'cat'ted back to the Linux Konsole. On
most terminal emulators, the code ESC[5i will direct the data
from the terminal display to the terminal printer, and the
code ESC[4i directs the it back to the terminal display. Linux
Konsole seems to ignore the escape sequences and send all the
data to the display.

What can I do to correct this?

Thanks,

John Hemmer

Don't know any way to check the disk. But the same thing happened to me about 6 months

which I copied onto a CD prior to taking my hard disk back to PCWorld (as luck would

Hi Paul. If its your only Windog partition, then you can get there in several
ways.

cd /mnt/windows

will take you there. (assuming this is what your setup calls it).

You can also back up from a standard KDE or Gnome window until you get to /,
then go into /mnt, and then into /windows, if you want the graphical stuff, so
you can just drag n' drop.
