[newbie-it] nfs root

2003-10-14 Per discussione Eraser Head
Ciao a tutti.

disperata...

Grazie a tutti!

[newbie-it] collegare nokia 5510

2003-10-14 Per discussione alfredo
Salve a tutti,

Mi pare si chiamasse downloader for x
o qualcosa del genere... Prova a cercarlo in rete.

Fanno cosi' moltissimi programmi in fondo.

Come mi regolo? Cosa mi consigliate per non fare casini?
Grazie a tutti.

girano correttamente nts e tftp?

[newbie-it] Primi passi in MySQL

finalmente sono riuscito ad installare MySQL!
Partiamo subito, digito da shell mysql e riesco a connettermi come

Ho provato a digitare i primi comandi seguendo la guida mysql tipo
SELECT VERSION(), CURRENT_DATE;
Io digito...
mysql CREATE DATABASE prova;
ERROR 1044: Access denied for user: '@localhost' to database 'prova'
?!?! Come accesso negato?
uhmm..
Help... thanx
byebye by Davide
ho i permessi. Dove li salva i DB?
Grazie ancora! ciaociao

For a normal user (ie. not root user) to access a FAT32 partition, you'll
need to mount the partn with the following options:

user,umask=0

and do not store any sensitive data on that partn as it will then be
read-write accessible by all users.

it is possible, but not trivial, to use have your /home/anarky folder

that way even if they steal your laptop, the files are safe. of course,
if They realy want your files, they could install a custom login

Derek, I know you have a lot more exp. at this stuff than I do, but why
don't you like NFS? I'm using it here on my 3 comp LAN and its rock solid
 and fast.

I understand that there are some issues if you need a very secure setup,
but for a simple at home LAN like mine, I don't understand why it
 wouldn't be a recommended option.

 Thanks.

IMO NFS sucks for a number of reasons such as.

1/ Newbies have trouble setting it up. I have lost count of the number of
times I have gone over it on this list (try searching the archives for 'NFS
jennings')
Since Mandrake 9.0 Mandrake Control Centre has had a nice GUI for setting up
NFS clients. But there is still no GUI for setting up the server.

2/ It is chronically insecure. It depends on the host believing a client when
they identify who they are (there is no password exchange). NFS should
therefore never be used on any Lan segment attached to the internet. By
contrast kio_fish is as secure as your ssh server. I have posted often on how
to use privacy keys with ssh that makes it very secure indeed and suitable
for using over the internet.

3/ The user account management sucks. You either need an Ldap server to manage
users, (something I have no experience with), or else you must ensure that
the usernames and User/Group ID numbers (UID/GID) on the different machines
are identical. If not then the permissions on the files shared with NFS is
all screwed up.

4/ NFS has a habit of hanging the system. If you switch off one machine
without unmounting the NFS shares, then the other machine will hang when it
is shut down. In Mandrake 8.1 it would hang forever. From Mandrake 8.2
onwards it hangs for 5 minutes. (Forever in many peoples mind)

I can understand why Aaron would want this. If he has other users on his

As someone else has pointed out it's bad form to mess around with permissions
outside your home directory. Thankfully you can don't need to. You can set
up a directory right in your home directory for wallpapers. In KDE and, I
assume, GNOME you don't need to stay /usr/share/wallpapers to get your
picture loaded.

AFAIK, Netscape (and maybe also Kmail) do not work with procmail.
Netscape is not, strictly speaking, a MUA, but a whole mail system in
one program: It delivers the mail to the local machine, and does all the
redistribution and filtering by itself (I think), basically performing
the roles of fetchmail, sendmail, procmail and a MUA. If you want to
work the traditional unix way (which IMO is better), you need to use a
decent MUA, such as mutt. (Then again, maybe I'm wrong, and there is
some setting that allows netscape mail to function as a MUA, but you
probably have to set this in one of the endless menus)

On a typical server setup, procmail kicks in before
Netscape/Mozilla/whatever downloads your mail, so you can run both. I
set procmail to send notorious known spam to /dev/null and let Mozilla
handle the more subtle stuff. Mozilla's heuristics are pretty good -
the disadvantage is that it has to download the mail before it can
decide it's spam.

If Aaron were to change the permissions on /usr/share/wallpapers to allow him
to keep his new wallpaper there, then he would find that the msec(Mandrake
Secure) security system would only go and change them back again one hour
later.

Then he would be posting here asking why he cannot change permissions.

The easiest solution is to not mess with permissions, and to either open a
'Super User' instance of konqueror to write the file to /usr/share/wallpapers
(KMenuApplicationsFileToolsFileManager(SuperUserMode) ), or else keep his
downloaded wallpapers in a directory in his /home.

Using a directory in /home has the advantage that when he comes to upgrade his
system, his downloaded wallpapers will not be lost.

Re: [newbie] Good news .. and a question

2003-10-14 Per discussione [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Thank you all for replying and suggesting changes to my line of
thinking. That is exactly what I was looking for since at this point
it's hard to trust anything I think up on my own.

I've taken everyone's advice (which thinking about it now, makes perfect
sense) and have created a directory inside my /home/user directory to
hold my backgrounds. Works a peach.

I'm still unclear, on how to handle the /mp3s directory/partition. I
don't mind storing all the mp3s under /home if that is the best thing
to do permissions wise/global wise, but at this point, I wouldn't know
how to move that directory and it's mount point to /home. If someone
could be a little more detailed, that would help a lot. Thanks, again.
Not sure what I'd do without this list.

As someone else has pointed out it's bad form to mess around with
permissions outside your home directory. Thankfully you can don't need
to. You can set up a directory right in your home directory for
wallpapers. In KDE and, I assume, GNOME you don't need to stay
/usr/share/wallpapers to get your picture loaded.

I can understand why Aaron would want this. If he has other users on his
computer then they would also have access to that wallpaper if it was
placed in /usr/share/wallpapers. I ran into the same problem when I
started but ended up just creating a folder for them in my home
  directory as you suggested.

  Russ

Probably not, it doesn't overwrite the directories, IIRC, it just updates the
packages that are there. However, you may not get a working system since
newer packages won't be overwritten and I don't think that Texstar stuff will
coexist with the regular Mandrake stuff, at least not all of it.

You can always download the Texstar rpm's manually and run RPM to install them
to try to get your system working again. Funny, this is the first time I
have heard of packages getting removed by installing updates, normally, if
the package install doesn't work, you still have the original files there.
You might want do an ls in /usr/bin/ to see if the mcc application is there
but just renamed to something like mcc.rpmold.

As I recall in 9.0 kio_fish is in contrib and a lot of the mirrors no longer
have 9.0/contrib so it might be a bit difficult to find the RPM.
In 9.1 kio_fish is installed as standard, and according to rpmfind.net there
is an RPM for Suse called kio_fish so it might be easier to do it with the
ssh server on Mandrake.

You could always use gftp instead of kio_fish.

Just start gftp and log onto the ssh server. Just remember to select the drop
down box on the right as ssh.
Not as pretty as konqueror, but it will get the job done.

As for the Reply To in your posts. :-
Normally when people reply to an email the reply will go to the same address
the mail came from. But if you fill that in the Reply To field then when
people reply to your mails they will always go to that address. This is not
usually an issue since normally the addresses are the same.
But when you post to a mailing list the From address is that of the mail
server. In this case [EMAIL PROTECTED]
When I reply to a post I want the reply to go to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Only trouble is your Reply To overrides it, and I have to re-address the post
to make sure it goes to the correct destination.

Of course that is less trouble than writing this paragraph explaining why
Reply To is a pain ;-)

File manager you use isn't the question, what file system you
use is. Anyhow, undelete is not doable, and/or you won't be too
happy with the results anyhow. If the files you accidently deleted
belong to a package, just use 'rpm -Uvh --force package.rpm' (same
version/patch level as already installed) to replace the missing
files. See 'man rpm' to see just what --force does. This is just
about the only proper use of --force. If it was your data or config

Yes. Yes. Yes. g

You'll probably have to copy the files off the CD-RW and then blank the disk,
then in the new project select multi seesion in order to do what you want.

Multi session is slightly wasteful (about 10 MB waste per session IIRC) but
less so than not using the space available.

RE: [newbie] Good Article on Linux Filesystems

I think that article would serve well to be in Twiki. Just
be sure to get the author's permission before pushing it
to a PDF. I would recommend putting it up in it's original
form if the author will allow it. Rewritting it will surely
take away from it's original clarity and easy read.

Just my thoughts.

Excellent article! Do you think a link should be put on Twiki
   for it?

If you think it's a good article, then sure, put it on the wiki!

  I would suggest going to

http://mandrake.vmlinuz.ca/bin/view/Main/InstallationAndSystemConfiguration
and adding the link. Or, add a page if you have more you want
  to add.

Gonna make me do it, eh? :-)

Sorry, just trying to get people used to the idea :)

Regarding links being broken, Maybe we should just print it to pdf
and include the file on the twiki, giving proper credit and reason
for pdf'ing it?

If that's what people want, i'll be happy to do it. (it'll be my
1st time attaching a file in wiki...)

Or, i guess we could save the html? What are the legal issues with
this sort of thing?

File manager you use isn't the question, what file system you
use is. Anyhow, undelete is not doable, and/or you won't be too
happy with the results anyhow. If the files you accidently
deleted belong to a package, just use 'rpm -Uvh --force
package.rpm' (same version/patch level as already installed) to
replace the missing files. See 'man rpm' to see just what --force
does. This is just about the only proper use of --force. If it
was your data or config files, restore from the backups you
 regularly make ;)

Just an addition. There's a pertinent article to the subject
today at
http://newsforge.com/newsforge/03/10/08/1416248.shtml?tid=23

It's mostly about recovering file systems, but deals with
undeleting also. If you read the whole article, I believe you'll
see why I wrote 'undelete is not doable, and/or '.

I am wondering if 9.2RC2 is the same as 9.2

If you're using RC2, you can just add cooker sources for RPMS and
RPM2 from a cooker mirror and update to
tom $ cat /etc/mandrake-release
Mandrake Linux release 9.2 (Torrent) for i586

A lot less frustrating than bittorrent, and less mb's to d/l too.
Current cooker on the mirrors is 9.2, plus a few updates. 9.1 users
can also use cooker to update to 9.2, just 'urpmi urpmi' first,
then get the rest. Don't be put off by the total number of mb's
urpmi displays. That's installed space, not actual d/l. As a rule
of thumb, the amount you'll be d/l'g is about 40% of the installed
space. Since you're upgrading (ie, replacing packages) there'll be
little to no additional disk space needed. The challenge will be
finding a good mirror. (hint: European mirrors are better)

That's RC2; NOT 9.2. Those ISOs are more than a month old and there are so
many updates between that and current cooker that you may as well just do as
Tom suggests and go for a full cooker upgrade. That would actually involve
less bandwidth than what you're doing.

Or just do a network install from the 9.2 tree on the same machine. Probably
just as fast.

BTW don't toss the ISOs you already have, you can rsync them to the actual

You should be able to, with some restrictions;

you need a fast enough connection to make it worthwhile,

you need to change the Path to hdlist/synthesis to reflect the new tree
you're pulling from.

If you have the space on your system I'd recommend that you ftp the 9.2 tree
(all of it including contrib) from any mirror you can find it on to a local
directory and make a boot floppy or CD using the hd.img from /Mandrake/base.
You can quite likely do a hard drive upgrade install that way.

But you're still better off doing it Tom's way. Remember that at the moment
there's very little difference between cooker and 9.2 Canicule anyway.

But you're still better off doing it Tom's way. Remember that at the moment
there's very little difference between cooker and 9.2 Canicule anyway.

Thank you in advance.

 Yep, I'm waiting for that.
I'm waiving my silver membership for that.bittorrent sux:(

 Good luck,

I'll still re-up the membership, but it's only a method to support my
favourite distribution. I've never logged into the Club site.

I suppose I'll have to order the box set from the store since the retail
channels here in Canada (this part of it anyway) suck vacuum through a
thousand mile long leaky straw.

Who the devil has time for the club?

I've still got 700 and so much days to go before my membership expiresI'm
not sure 'cause I can't login, club is saturated.

That's about another 2 years i.e. upto Mdk-11.2 ;)
I'll just pre-order a boxed set at Mdk store anyway. I'm doing this to support
(I run cooker) so who cares if it takes a week or so longer.
I collect linux distro CD's, the more obscure (or older) the better:)

Soplease don't feel inhibited (anyone) to offer:D

I think that article would serve well to be in Twiki. Just

take away from it's original clarity and easy read.

 Just my thoughts.

Eric is right about potential legal issues with respect to this article though
one is left to wonder about the notion of fair use.

It would certainly not be my intention to change a dot of the article as that
would create major problems with both the the publisher and the author. I
think it's called plagarism. :-)

Nor was it ever my intent to republish the article on a PDF. Personally I
find PDF files to be an enormous pain in the butt and really have never seen
the point in them. Also, PDF is proprietory and I'm not comfortable using a
proprietory format on Twiki.
