I did the same process a while ago and it worked for
me. Only I'm at work right now and I can't access the
details of what I did, because they are on my machine

It may be that after Starting httpd: apache is

passphrase (which, again, I can't remember exact

When I get home I'll remid myself of how to do it.

Can I set it up in any way that it doesn't log the connections from my

I'm a newcomer to Snort myself, so the following may be partially or
totally incorrect, but you might like to try it:

in the /etc/snort.conf file (check the location of that file!), there
should be an item that looks like:

$MY_NET=any

This Snort variable tells Snort which networks are internal. So, for
example, if you want to tell Snort that all of the 213.224.83.x network is
an internal network, you put this in snort.conf:

$MY_NET=213.224.83.0/24

You can also include other networks in your definition, e.g.:

$MY_NET=[213.224.83.0/24,192.168.0.0/24]

Now many of the Snort rules use the $EXTERNAL_NET and $MY_NET variables to
determine whether there is a potential attack, so if Snort knows which
networks are internal then it won't report traffic from those networks as
an attack.

You _might_ also need to change the $EXTERNAL_NET variable to _exclude_
the networks you have defined for $MY_NET, e.g.:

$EXTERNAL_NET=![213.224.83.0/24,192.168.0.0/24]

Like I said, this is all I can tell you with my limited experience. If
anyone out there knows better, please let us both know!

  Hi,

Two days ago I installed Mandrake 8.2, because I
read the support for the Alcatel Speedtouch USB modem was better than any
  other distro.
During installation, I was delighted, because I
could choose what kind of internet connection I want to use and suprisingly I
could select the adsl modem, never seen this on Suse or Redhat, wich I've
  tried before.
After installation, all I had to do was copy the
mgmt.o file to /usr/share/speedtouch, so I read and I could connect to the
  net...
I started the Mandrake config gui to configure,
domain, dns, user/pass, the line was tested and for the first time in my life
I could connect to the net through Linux, wich I wasn't able to do with Suse
or Redhat, because of the uge install problems
I surfed some on the net, shut down the pc and
when I restarted it I could not reconnect again.
The modem is loaded I think, because the 2 green
lights are on and the line is tested no error occur
I use the internet icon on the desktop to connect
to the net, I click it on, I click on connect, the line is tested, than is
says: connection failed and something about reconfiguring with mandrake
configure.Though domain, dns, user and pass are correctly
  configured..
Can enyone help me with this

Re: [newbie] Proxy and NAT

2001-07-23 Per discussione Chris Slater-Walker

The Cisco PIX firewall does it like this:

clientA: 10.0.0.1===(PIX)123.4.5.6:5677Server
clientB: 10.0.0.2===(PIX)123.4.5.6:5678Server

What I'm trying to say here is that, where there are a limited number of
valid Internet addresses available to the outside (Internet) interface of
the NAT, then it sends data to the Internet server as if that data was
coming from the same IP address but different ports. This is known as Port
Address Translation in the Cisco world. So basically the NAT translates two
different internal addresses (10.0.0.1/2) into the same external address but
with different ports. The difference between this and your suggestion is
that it is the NAT box which provides the different port numbers.

The Cisco PIX firewall is basically a NAT box with added security features,
and this method of doing things does not necessarily apply elsewhere. This
scheme cannot be used with streaming protocols, according to Cisco; I've
never tried.

I don't know -- suspect it is one of those details that the devil is in
 ;-)

It does seem to work properly -- I've browsed the same sites from
adjacent machines, and never seemed to have a problem that I could
attribute to the data coming to the (my) wrong client machine.

Maybe somebody else can answer your question.

Re: [newbie] samba and win2000

You shouldn't need to make this registry change; however if you don't, then
you need to ensure that the following line is in the global section of
/etc/smb.conf

encrypt passwords = yes

I can't speak for Win9x, but NT used encrpyted passwords over the network
from SP3 onwards, and so does Win2000.

You may need to install Samba 2.07 in order for Win2k clients to work
correctly: there were some specific bugs fixed relating to Win2k.

Re: [newbie] OT -- Linux on Mac -- OT

2000-11-29 Per discussione Chris Slater-Walker

I was running a small web site using Apache on an old PowerMac 7500/100 at
my last job. That machine is at least 5 years old, so it does work pretty
well.

I paid a very small amount for the commercial distribution from
www.linuxppc.com

I found it difficult to install. The Mac came with a 500MB SCSI disk, and I
added a 4GB SCSI disk. I installed a minimal MacOS8.5 on the 500MB disk, and
then booted from the LinuxPPC CD. I don't know why but this got it going.

You need to make sure that the Macs are capable of running LinuxPPC - most
PowerPC with PCI bus are.

You can find some information at www.linuxppc.org, but I think there is less
documentation around, and it isn't as well organised as the Intel
distributions. But it does work very well! The version I installed used the
2.2.13 kernel.

I have just downloaded the image for LinuxPPC 2000, now I have to find out
how to burn it onto a bootable CD!

Best of luck

Try using the IP address of the printer for the

Imagine Series 2 video card. Although this is listed in the selection list
during setup, MDK reports "no screens found" regardless of which resolution
and monitor I try.

Does anyone have any suggestions why this is happenin and how to fix it?
I've never encountered this problem with a supposedly supported card before.

Re: [newbie] How to manually enable HD optimisations after install

2000-08-28 Per discussione Chris Slater-Walker

first of all, I don't know whether what I am about to suggest is what is
meant by "disk optimistation," but here goes:

In the console if you enter:

hdparm -t /dev/hda (where hda is a hard disk, probably the one on which you
have installed Linux) then you will get an answer after a number of seconds
showing the transfer rate which that disk has achieved.

Just doing hdparm /dev/hda with no options will show you the paramters which
the IDE controller is using for that disk

If your disk is not using DMA then try entering:

hdparm -d 1 /dev/hda and then do the -t option again. See if you get any
increase in transfer rate.

Also one worth trying is hdparm -c 1 /dev/hda which will enable 32-bit I/O.

If you find that these improve disk performance you can put them in a
combined form, i.e.:

hdparm -c 1 -d 1 -k 1 /dev/hda

at the end of /etc/rc.local. If you have more than one disk then try it on
the others as well.

***NB*** It is possible that using these commands will lead to data
corruption, although I myself have never had that experience. Also remember
that if you are using SCSI disks and not IDE your device names will be
/dev/sda, /dev/sdb etc.

There are many other hdparm options covering such things as buffer size,
block size etc. which I have to admit I don't really understand.

Just wondering how I would manually enable HD optimisations after
installing and specifying during the install that they should be turned
 off.

I was trying to figure out a problem I was having (turned out to be
automount) and thought reinstalling with optimisations might do the
trick. How can I turn them on now that I know that they weren't the
 source of my problem.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide,

Re: [newbie] Memory detection problem using GRUB

2000-07-29 Per discussione Chris Slater-Walker

This seems to be a common problem; I have experienced it myself. I think it
may be a problem with certain BIOSes not reporting memory correctly to the
OS, but that's just a guess.

Anyway, one way of fixing it with Grub which I use is to edit the file
/boot/grub/menu.lst

In the file you will see something like:

title linux
kernel (hd0,0)/boot/vmlinuz-secure root=dev/hda1 ide1=0xfff0,0xffe4
ide2=0xffa8,0xffe0

title linux-up
kernel.

title failsafe
kernel

So at the end of each line starting "kernel" add this: mem=256M

You should find that Linux sees all your memory.

I have installed Mandrake 7.1 on a Pentium II 450Mhz with 256 MB of RAM.
It is only showing 65 MB of ram being detected, even though I entered 256
during install. In looking over the archives I notice there was
discussion and how to fix this in the /etc/lilo.conf BUT I am using Grub.
I am hoping that someone out there can help me with this problem.

I am a real newbie -- my first install of Linux was 2 weeks ago on July
8th and I love it!!!

Re: [newbie] NT4 domain joining

2000-07-29 Per discussione Chris Slater-Walker

Assuming you have Samba running OK and you have set up smb.conf with the
domain name, and also assuming that you're using Samba 2.0.6 then the first
thing you need to do is to go to your domain controller and start server
manager. Then select add to domain/windows nt4 worktsation and enter the
netbios name of your linux machine.

Now at your linux box enter:

smbpasswd -j domain-name -r pdc-netbios-name -U admin-acct-on-NT

Substitute your domain name, pdc name and admin account id as necessary.

You will of course need to ensure that linux can reach the PDC somehow - try
pinging its netbios name first.

Personally I can't wait for samba to work as a fully functional PDC!

Re: [newbie] NT4 domain joining

2000-07-25 Per discussione Chris Slater-Walker

First of all you need SAMBA installed and configured. The relevant entries
in /etc/smb.conf should look something like this (my version SAMBA is
2.0.6):

workgroup = mydomain
NetBIOS name = mylinuxmachine ;(this will be the netbios name that windows
sees)
security = domain
password server = *
encrypt passwords = yes

then on your NT PDC or BDC go to server manager. Add a new NT workstation to
the domain with a name the same as the NetBIOS name you entered in smb.conf.

Next go back to the linux machine as root. Enter: smbpasswd -j mydomain -r
pdc-netbiosname -U administrator-on-NT

Substitute your domain name, linux machine name and netbios name of your PDC
as required. NOTE: "security = domain" should not be changed - it's exactly
that.

To get Samba to recognise the new config do: /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb restart

Re: [newbie] boot to console

2000-07-24 Per discussione Chris Slater-Walker

Edit the file /etc/inittab.

Find the line: id:5:initdefault:

Change the 5 (which specifies starting in X) to 3 (which specifies console).

The number is actually the runlevel which Linux boots into. Runlevel 3 is
console, multi-user; runlevel 5 is X.

Re: [newbie] 10/100 mb hub won't work

2000-07-22 Per discussione Chris Slater-Walker

Who is the manufacturer of the huv and NIC? At work I have had some problems
with 3Com 10/100 hubs not communicating with 10mb NICs. I know this isn't
your problem, I'm just interested to know.

I'm sure that the auto-negotiation which 10/100 hibs have to do to determine
the speed of the card they are connected to does not always work.

I have a 10/100MB hub at home. All my computers (NT 4.0 server and
workstation, Win 95) work fine with the hub. I plugged the Linux box into
the hub and it won't work. I switched back to my 10 MB, just to slow for a
power user like me, and it works fine. What gives?

Re: [newbie] Network Card Nightmares

2000-07-22 Per discussione Chris Slater-Walker

I had a similar problem with an NE2000 clone. The way i got it to work was:

1. Enable plugpray on card.
2. Run Lothar against the card, but change no parameters.
3. Change the card to non-pp, and give it an IRQ and address.
4. In Linuxconfig other net config app enter the card's parameters manually.

I have a 200 MMX Cryrix clone running Mandrake 7.0.

I am really new to Linux.

I want this to be my gateway. I want to setup Samba for File/Print
sharing.

I have two new Linksys cards I want to setup to make the box dual-homed.

I turned off plug and play in my bios. What do I do now? It does not
recognize or detect the cards with the Lothar hardware tool.

I don't know where to go now. Any ideas? I looked and could not find
whether or not these cards are supported. Are they?

 Thanks.
